Unable to view php files in Design View?

Need help! I cannot select design view when working with a PHP document, the DesignView option is disabled?
My information.
-          Dreamweaver CS5
-          Mac OSX 10.6 snow Lepoard
I have searched online and I also went through the FAQ but couldn’t find anything relating to this particular issue and my Professor at school said that I need to contact Adobe directly as design view should always be available but all that I would see in Design View are the HTML elements within the PHP file.
The Design View button is disabled, I can not click on it all and so for my class assignments. I have to copy the PHP code into a new HTML document and only then am I able to view the html/php and edit the HTML elements, and then copy and paste it back into the PHP file once I have the html elements/design set up correctly.
I did a similar “Set up PHP for Mac OS X – MAMP” to the version available here, could I have set this up incorrectly and that is why Design View is disabled?
Thanks I appreciate your guys expertise and any help!

Go to Dreamweaver > Preferences, and select File Types / Editors from the Category list on the left. Make sure that .php is NOT listed among the filename extensions in "Open in code view".
Adding a filename extension to that list prevents files from being opened in Design view.

  • I only see "PHP" icons in Design View, not the executed code

I have setup a new database installation and tested it - no problem.  I can open my webpage in Firefox, and the php code executes properly.  When I imported this site into Dreamweaver, I am unable to see the results of any executed PHP code, just "PHP" icons.
Is it possible to view the results of the executed PHP code in Dreamweaver.   I'm not talking about complicated PHP code, just a bunch of 'echo' statements really.
    Thanks from a DreamWeaver newbie.

I have moved your thread to the appropriate forum, Dreamweaver Application Development, which is where PHP-related issues should be discussed.
In answer to your question, PHP is a server-side language that needs to be parsed (executed) through a web server capable of handling PHP code. In order to see the output of the PHP code, you need to set up a testing server. Instructions on how to do so can be found in this article in the Dreamweaver Developer Centre. Once you have set up a testing server, you can see the output of the PHP code in Design view by activating Live View (in Dreamweaver CS4) or Live Data view in earlier versions of Dreamweaver.

  • Can't see .cfm files in Design view

Can't see .cfm files in Design view in Dreamweaver CC.

    Hi pkregel,
Do these files open as intended in Dreamweaver CS6? I am not a CF expert but I am guessing that if you are able to open the files, then you should be able to see them in both the views. Can you post a screenshot as well?
    Thanks,

  • TXT Files in Design View

I use a lot of TXT files as INCLUDE files in various pages.
When I used Dreamweaver 4 I had no problem editing a TXT file just
like any HTML file and using DesignView. When I get going with
Dreamweaver MX2004 I figured out how to do it. But I had to
reinstall DW MX2004 and cannot get it to look at a TXT file in
anything but CodeView - or call NotePad to edit it.
I have already removed .txt from "OPEN IN CODE VIEW". I have
tried going to MMDocumentTypes.xml and setting the Text type to
HTML - which is what I thought I had used before. That didn't work.
I've tried various combination of editing the Extensions.txt file,
too - with and without the MMDocumentTypes.xml file.
I know there is a way to do it - but cannot find the
    way!!

I finally figured out how to work with TXT files in Design
    View...
    1. Go into MMDocumentTypes.xml and set the Text type to HTML
    2. in PREFERENCES Remove the .TXT type from OPEN IN CODEVIEW
    3. in PREFERENCES add the EXTENSION .txt and add Dreamweaver
    as the EDITOR
The HTML in a TXT file shows up and is editable just as in an
    HTML document

  • New to Dreamweaver. Can I open/ view .php files with this application?

Recently downloaded a file that had the extension; .php. Tried opening it on my desktop and couldn't. Was told the Dreamweaver software/ application from adobe could help. Please, educate me on what to do in order to view these files.

PHP files are all code.  You need a local testing server to view PHP files locally in your browser.   Dreamweaver can help you view the code, but you still need a local testing server to preview it.
Get one of these testing servers for you OS and install it.

  • Unable to open jsp file in Design mode

    Hi,
I am unable to open jsp files in design mode, I am using eclipse Version: 3.6.1.
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Ale Hasan

    Hi Ale,
Thank you for the additional information. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be anything unusual about your project based on your description. I'm surprised you don't see any processes listed in the process view while waiting for the page to open. I thought you might see something related to a queue manager job to "Manage Resource Event Jobs".
Are there any messages in the error.log? You can open a view to the error log from the menu option, "Window -> Show View -> Error Log". I'm curious if there are any messages about a process timing out, unable to reset some object within a certain time, or any exceptions logged.
If you change to another workspace with just a single JSF web project containing a smaller number of JSP, do you experience the same behavior?
Can you also try using a more recent release of OEPE to see if that helps? The 11.1.1.6.1 release is about a year old.

the menu graphics, althought they are not positioned as they should
be. But no text on the page. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • View PHP Files in Expressions 4

I downloaded PHP 5.5.8 and have been unable to view a PHP file in Expression Web 4. The Microsoft server open and all I get is a blank screen. I have opened the Site from the Site Menu, I setup the PHP.ini file as shown in the PHP.ini production file. I
as unable to find a cg-php.exe file in the php download but I did find on online. The PHP.ini and cgi-php.exe are in the same directory as all of the web files. When I download the files to my website and run them they work fine. Can anyone give me some direction
on how to make this work?

    Hi Jeff,
If you are still interested to set up PHP, I had the similar to yourself and succeeded.  Basically, ignore the zip folder options and download the msi installer and make sure to install 'other web server' when given the option.
    MSI INSTALLER
Following advice on here (thanks to Kathy, https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/expression/en-US/5ef17622-9147-4264-aee4-a40ed310a417/install-php?forum=web), I downloaded the installation
file from  http://windows.php.net/download/, file: php-5.3.29-nts-Win32-VC9-x86.msi.  I then executed that file and installed it to C:\Programs\PHP\php5.3.29\
An important note, when installing the msi it asked me which web server I wanted to set up.  Either  IIS Fast CGI or Other CGI.  I chose the former, but the message said FASTCGI is not installed on the current version,  so I chose 'other'.
This is clearly the important step to ensure the php-cgi.exe file is installed correctly.
I then launched EW and opened the index.php file and clicked F12 to preview it.  You should see the following alert:
    | Select a valid version of PHP in the Application Options dialog.
    | Application options | More Info
    | OK
Go to Tools > Application Options > General Tab and that is where you can browse to 'Path to PHP executible file for previewing PHP pages', which is the php-cgi.exe you have just installed.
Your testing server should be set up.
    Good luck.
    Andy

  • Unable to view page content in Design View

I cannot see the content of a page made from a template in normal Design view.
I am able to see the content in Live View mode, but cannot make changes in that view. I can only make changes in code view.
My client would like to make changes to content text in Design view only.
Why am I unable to see/edit in Design view?

There are two questions for the Spry Menu 2 version.
    1)  Do I have to make all menu title and link changes in code?  With the regular Spry menu that comes with DW CS5 you can make the changes, and add links to menu items, in the "Design > Properties" window.  I would sure like to be able to do that, rather than go to the strictly "code" view and work in there.
    2)  With the Spry 2 menu at the top ( see www.Aloe-Vera.org/test.htm ) I am unable to go into "Design" view for the page to make changes in the content of the page itself.
Are there any fixes so that I can view and edit the rest of the page in DW CS5 "Design" view?
    Thanks, David
    1.  It is true you cannot use the Properties window.  You can use the code view or the Widget Browser to make edits.  The Widget Browser has a GUI if you feel more comfortable with that.
    2.  You should be able to make some changes in Design View, but unfortunately the GUI and clean layout in Design View is gone.  Best suggestion I can give you here is to file a bug report/feature request: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform .  I have before with this because I agree it helps newer users and compared to commercial alternatives like those from Project Seven it falls short everytime.

  • How can i view php files in english

I have some files saved in godaddy that are in code. I cant read code. But i can read english. My developer screwed me. I dropped my external hard drive and can view my files. Does anyone know how?

    You are welcome. Ajmeet -
Are you on a MAC or a Windows computer.?
Can you copy or tranfer the files from GoDaddy to a folder on your personal computer?
On your computer, any file can be viewed.
PHP code is plain text and can be read in any text editor like Notepad or Textpad.
In Dreamweaver they can be read in Code View.
HTML code can be viewed in any browser
In Dreamweaver they can be read in all views.
Image files like JPG GIF PNG can be displayed in your browser or in any graphics program like Photoshop or Fireworks.

    Hi,
    and this?

esp. "Edit in Code View preference
The final step is to check the File Types / Editors preference settings (Edit > Preferences) and make sure that this file extension is not listed in the Open In Code View field. By default, the INC file extension appears on this list. Remove ".inc" from the Open in Code View list and files with this extension should now be viewable in Design view."

  • Getting DW to show files in Design View

We have a set of HTML based templates that we use that all have the extension .vm
These files are used in an internal system, that allows us to swap out information when they are accessed.
When I open the files in dreamweaver it gray's out the split and design view buttons.
If i change the extension to .htm, the buttons are accessable.
There are a ton of these template files, is there anyway to get DW to always turn on the split and design buttons, so i do not have to change the extension of the files each time I need to access them?
I have already added them to the list of extensions in the preferences tab, but this only allows DW to open the files, and does not seem to enable the split and design buttons
    Thanks,

ok .. so I opened the extensions.txt file .. added the line
    VM: VM Files
removed .vm from the 'open in code view' list under preferences
restarted DW, and The buttons are still grayed out.
I have also tried adding VM to the first line of the extensions.txt file designating it as an HTML file. Still nothing.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks,
    ***EDIT***
I was finally able to get it to work using that url you provided.
I have to say .. this is most un-user friendly way to go about this I have ever seen.
    thanks though for your reply
