Unable to write in an external drive

Hi, everybody:
I am unable to write or work with the material I have in an external drive. I can see it, but nothing more. I see I have only permission for 'Read only' ('Solo puede leer', in Spanish), but I can't change it because there is no 'lock' to open there, or an evident way to do it. And I don't want to touch things in the System Preferences without knowing.
What can I do?
Thank you in advance for your help,
Remedios.

Thank you, Barney-15E. I can't reformat the drive, because I have there a lot of valuable stuff. Stuff I need to work with.
Hey... I'm a little disappointed with this. How is it that this super computer (the iMac is really wonderful, I agree) can't work with a simple hard drive I can use everywhere else..?
Well, anyway, sorry for disturbing you with my problems. Which one, Paragon, Tuxera, you recommend?
Thanks again,
Remedios.

  • I can read but I can't write to an external drive - changing permissions

I can read but I can't write to an external drive.
How do I change permissions? None of the helps here on the discussions have helped.
Why would a computer company let me read files but not write? Hahaha. This is insane.
I have to write computer files for work. It's a project due this morning.
Man, I'm going to have to go back to PC.
Just need the compter to write files.

If it's formatted as NTFS, reformat it as MS-DOS, exFAT, or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as desired.
If it's formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, use the Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on it.
If it's formatted as Mac OS Extended, click Authenticate and provide your administrator password, or change the permissions on that specific folder in its Get Info window.

  • Unable to change permissions on external drive.

I have an external Firewire drive attached to my PowerMac G5 running 10.5.5. Until the past few days I have been easily accessing (reading and writing) all areas of this drive from my standard non-admin user account since I have the "Ignore ownership on this volume" box checked in the get-info dialogue.
Recently however I have been unable to write to this drive from my non-admin account. When I go to the get-info dialogue, the "Ignore ownership on this volume" box is still checked but that doesn't seem to matter.
I am unable to click on the little padlock icon to change any permissions for any file on this partition (the other partition of this drive is being used by Time Machine, and does not seem to have the "Ignore ownership on this volume" box, and I am able to click on the padlock to make changes).
Any idea what is going on?

I am having a similar problem, but I cannot unlock the drive - as there is no lock icon .The drive is one I bought at Best Buy, and is formatted FAT32. I cannot see anywhere to unlock the drive since I moved to SL. It worked fine before I did the conversion. My other drives (I have 5 total) allow me to read and write, but the problem drive is set to read-only. Any suggestions? The specifics in info are: Kind: Volume, Modified: Yesterday..., Format: MS_DOS (FAT32), Capacity: 319.99 GB, Available: 106.48 GB, etc... Shared Folder is unchecked. Sharing and Permissions says "You can only read"
    Thanks for the help!

  • Unable to move project from external drive back to FCPX.

The HD was recently replaced in my iMac. Fortunately I had backed up my FCPX events and projects to folders on an external drive. I have down loaded FCPX again to the new HD but I'm unable to move my project back into FCPX. Having opened FCPX, I then open the project library, select the external drive, open the folder containing my project but the  "current version fcpproject"  is grey  (not available). I was however able to drag the "fcpevent" file into the event library.
    Any help will be appreciated

Since there is no disclosure triangle on your external showing in your project library, there are two possibilities:
    1) There are no projects presently located on the drive.
    2) Project files are on the drive but FCP can't see them because they are not at the root level of the drive.
So either way, to straighten this out you will have to move some files in the Finder – even though best practices (as both Tom and Luis have pointed out) are to stay within FCP to do that.
Move the existing CurrentVersion file to a temporary folder to hide it from FCP.
Unless you know that the Ball project is at a specific location on your external, do a spotlight search on Final Cut Projects. If something comes up, with FCP closed, navigate to it in the Finder and move it to the root level of the external drive. Then open FCP and it should now be accessible in your project library.  Select it in the library; go to File>Move Project. Things should now work.
But if you don't have another copy on your external, open FCP and hot the plus button at the bottom of project library and create a new project. That will create a Final Cut Projects Folder in your Movies folder (which is where it should be in your home directory). Close FCP. Open the temp file and drag the CurrentVersion file that you hid to the Final Cut Projects folder.
Hopefully, you wil now be able to get back to work.

  • HT1549 How do I read write to an external drive?  I am under admin account and cannot read write to any folder on the external drive.

I have a Mac Mini with Mavericks installed, as well as a PC running Windows 7.  I want to be able to read write from both computers to an external drive on the Mac.  I created 2 folders on the drive and named them Movies, and TV Shows.  The content of those folders are the respective files. I set up both folders to be shared on the Mac under system preferences, and then mapped the drives on the PC.  I also created a user account with admin privileges on the mac that matched my PC.   I then copied a Music folder to the root drive instead of using external, and set up sharing as well.  File Sharing is selected for all three folders, however the music folder is the only one which allows me to change the permissions to allow read write to everyone, or to create individual user accounts to connect with read write permissions.  The options to add users or change permissions are simply grayed out for the two folders on the external drive, so not only can I not write from my PC, but I can’t even do it on the Mac with the administrative user logged in. The folder on the root drive is fine but I cannot make any changes to the external drive at all.  Get info for any folder on drive shows read only.  SMB and AFP are selected for all folders under options.  I can access all three folders from PC, but can only add files to the Music folder. I cannot do anything from either computer to the folders on the external drive.

Try Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility - select the drive and run Repair Disk.

  • Write access to External Drives

I am a brand new Apple user and am having some problems with my external drives. It seems I only have read access to the drives when I plug in to my MacBook Pro. I have set myself up as Admin and have allowed myself to administer my computer, but I'm not sure why I can't write to the disk. Is there somewhere I need to set up this as a preference or change permissions? Or is it a problem with the drive being formatted for Windows (NTFS)? I don't think this is the case since I can read files from the drive with no problems. When I go to Disk Utility the option to view permissions is greyed out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it is NTFS then you will only be able to read from it. You can check the drive in "Disk Utility" (In the "Utilities" folder) and see what the format and partition scheme for the drive is. Use the "information" button at the top after you've selected the volume (not the drive, but the volume underneath it) to see the format information. A simple reformat to "Mac OS Extended" format should make the drive usable in OS X.

  • Disable write access to external drives via USB & FW400/800

We have a Mac Pro on our AD network. We want to disable users from having write access to external HDD through USB or FireWire so that they cannot possibly copy data to a attached USB/firewire drives.
    Is this possible?

Smith Micro has a product called Internet CleanUp that has the feature your looking for.

  • I am unable to back up to external drive since loading lion

Since installing Lion my Western Digital external drive refuses to cooperate with Time Machine - any thoughts?

Attempting an update without a backup is not a very smart idea.
When was the last time the device was backed up?
What is the exact message when the backup fails?
Personally, I have found that simply ejecting the device, disconnecting then reconnecting resolves random "unable to backup" issues.

  • Read/write access on external drive set to none; can't see drive to change

I was learning about profiles and permissions and set the Read/write access on my external drive to none. I wanted to protect my guests from accidentally viewing private files. I thought I was doing it for that profile only, but now I can't see the drive to change it back. I have already tried using the disk utitility and re mounting the drive, but still cannot see the drive icon on the desktop or anywhere. I know the drive is okay because I can see it in disk utility but disk utility says the read/write access is none.
thanks for anyone that can advise me. I'm more of a PC expert, than a Mac expert.

Follow the instructions in this FAQ which are relevant to your situation; logging in as root is not needed.

  • Re-setting Read&Write permissions on external drive?

I have a 40GB external drive on which I backed up my "Documents" on a Windows machine (now discarded). Now that I switched to a Mac (thank God) I would like to use the "old" external drive, but I only have "Read Only" permissions and no lock icon to unlock and reset the disk permissions.
Would greatly appreciate advice on making this disk writable again. Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Veit

Select and right (control) click on the disk icon for the drive. From the contextual menu, select +Get Info+. At the bottom of the info window is +Sharing and Permissions+ where you can change permissions.
However, if the Windows drive is using NTFS, you will only be able to Read it. Mac OS X cannot Write to an NTFS-formatted drive. If this is your situation, you should copy off your valuable data on the drive and reformat it as +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ using Disk Utility (Erase tab). Be sure to select the entire DRIVE in the sidebar, and not the volume indented below the drive.

  • Unable to access music in external drive

Ex-windows user wants to know: All my music is stored in an external drive. How do I get to add all these into itunes library or play them?

Open iTunes and drag the folder which contains the music into the open iTunes window; iTunes will then copy the music to the hard disk and add it to the library.

  • Unable to access photos on external drive

I have Aperture 2.1.3 and I have been using Photo Mechanic to quickly import, edit, and save my photos to one of my external drives. I have been using Aperture to adjust some of these images by importing them into Aperture but the stored files have remained on the external drive. Suddenly, when I try to import the photos from external drive for Aperture manipulation the photos are not available for import. But the photos are viable on my external drive, and If I use Photoshop or Photo Mechanic, I CAN access and import these same files .
I hope this makes sense! I need advise!
    thanks to all!

.plist is the preference file. Go to your User/Library/Preferences and take com.apple.Aperture.plist (the preferences are in alphabetical order) and put the file on your desktop. Then restart Aperture. Aperture will return to its default settings and there will be a new preference file in the Library/Preferences folder.
If this clears your problem, then your old plist file was corrupt and you should put it in the trash and rebuild your own preferences.
If you still have the problem after restarting Aperture, then it's not the plist file, and you can trash the new plist and restore your old one from the Desktop back into the Library/Preferences folder.
Have you tried to reboot the machine. Sometimes things go wrong in the connection with an external drive and rebooting the machine clears the problem. You could also reset the PRAM (on boot, hold down Command-Option-P-R and wait for the second chime). Sometimes the PRAM gets corrupted and this affects the relationship with external drives.
You could also import the RAW files into Aperture, instead of using them as referenced files.

  • Unable to mount Camera as external drive

I have three cameras which have not had any problems connecting prior to the latest update to Mountain Lion 10.8.2: Sony NEX-3, Samsung NX100, and a Toshiba Camileo H30.
The NEX-3 is recognized by image capture and iPhoto, the other two are not.  I want to mount the camera as an external drive, though it appears that Apple has removed this functionality from Mountain Lion.  Is there a workaround for this?  Some setting I am missing?
    Thanks for your help.

Does your Maxtor allow alternative connecting--firewire or USB. Try the firewire in particular.

  • Unable to access music on external drive

I have recently had to re-install Windows on my laptop - due to a virus. I had previously moved all my music to an external drive and successfully changed itunes to access it there - I changed the location folder in Edit/Preferences/Advanced then held down the shift key whilst launching Itunes thereby getting the option to choose a different library location. I now find that this option no longer appears when I launch Itunes with the shift key held down. I'm using Itunes 6.
    Anyone any ideas??
    Fortune laptop   Windows XP

I've now resolved the issue having found an article by Christopher Breen - in it he suggested -
"If you can locate your music files by rummaging around on your hard drive but iTunes seems dead set against showing them, use the Add to Library command in the File menu to find your music and add it again. Before doing so, open the Advanced tab of iTunes' preferences and make sure that the Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder When Adding to Library option is unchecked. With this option unchecked, song titles will be added to iTunes without the songs themselves being copied to the iTunes Music folder."
I tried this and I got all my albums back even though I lost some of my artwork and all of my playlists.... I can live with that!!

  • Unable to enter into the external drive

HiI have copied some data in My Passport external drive 1TB earlier.  However, while copying my data, due to power fluctuations (even though the system is connected to  APC UPS) the system got hanged and rebooted.  From then onwards whenever I connect the passport external drive to the system it is showing a I/O error and after a long time it will recognise and give some letter say H: in the explorer. When I verified with device manager, I could see it as WD-<Passport ID> . WD data diagnostics software could not identify the drive. How do I recover the data from this error ?  what is it I have to do to see that data is recovered and drive is made reuable. thanks in advance-sunson

Hi and welcome to the WD community.
Try connecting the drive to a different computer, or perhaps using a different USB cable or port to see if you can access the drive.
