Unable to Xport iMovie Footage to Videocamera

Hi all. Anyone having trouble exporting iMovie footage to Videocamera?
When I create a movie, I often send it back to iDVD tape as a backup. With the new iMovie update I am unable to export footage back to my Canon XL1 Videocamera or my Sony DCR-HC26 Videocamera.
I've tried replacing the firewire. Didn't work.
I've tried removing ALL transitions or Titles from the beginning of the movie - Didn't work.
I've been exporting to tape from iMovie for the last 3 years with no problem. This new problem began with the last iMovie update.
I am able to export to iDVD for backup...but it takes 12 hours to burn a DVD. I've tried backing up by creating a Disk image - that also is a challenge as it seems to lop off video when my movies are a full 55-60 minutes.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Naadra
Try to find these files and move them temporarilly to a new folder on Your
desktop.
Pref files:
iMovie
-->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie.plist
and
-->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie3.plist
iDVD
-->/Users/YourName**/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iDVD.plist
com.apple.iMovie.plist
com.apple.iMovie3.plist
com.apple.iDVD.plist
These are the names I would search for.
iMovie and iDVD will make new ones when started - You might need to select
PAL or NTSC after this and then re-start once more to make it take action.
alt. And I think easier is to go to the up left and Apple down this menu You can
select "System prefs" - don't have the proper term.
In this You select "accounts" and create a new one. Log into this and all old
pref files are created new by each program. Error free hopefully.

  • Unable to Export iMovie project in everyway I have attempted for the past 2 weeks. Please Help! Due date coming up!

I've unable to Export iMovie project in everyway I have attempted for the past 2 weeks.I have a late 2012 iMac with 8gb of RAM and 700 gb of free space on the hard drive. The video I am trying to export is 48 mins long with most of the source footage from a NIkon D3100 and several other cammcorders. I've been exporting with Apple Intermediate codec because that was the only one that has work so far but it only worked once and since then I have had to make changes to the project and now I'm unable to get it to work. For all Quicktime exports in H.264 or AIC (my prefered format for this export since I figured it'd offer the highest quality when I import it into Encore for making a dvd out of it) Which just stops exporting in the last few minutes without explination as to why or it crashes and quits. It either leaves a partial file or nothing at all. When I do "export movie" I get a "not enough memory Heap zone error"
I don't know what to do any help would be greatly appreciated!
By the way I happen to have Adobe CS6 Production Premium but didn't know how to use it as well when starting the project and now really regret not using it because it appears to be 10x more stable and capable of handling all the tasks I want it to do.

Are your event clips in h.264? If so, you can solve this by Right clicking on your Event Name and choose "Optimize Media". You can choose Full for 1080P or Large for 960P according to your preference.
After you have optimized your Event, you should be able to Share with no problem.

-108 mean you are running out of (free) RAM.
Try restarting the computer just prior to sharing. That frees up RAM.

Ok - after much cutting, trial and error and days of work I have never really established a root cause for the -108 error. Nothing I did resolved the issue to the orginal project.
The only work around I have found is to split the Original Project into two.
What I found was that anything around the 60 mins mark and above just failed to render in HD and showed the -108 error.
What worked for me was creating two project files - one around 57mins long - the other a part 2 - around 17 mins long. All using exactly the same source clips, photo's, music and transitions as the orginal.
This now works. I guess having it split in two makes it a little easier to work with as I wont have to keep rendering the first part which does not change but really wish Apple would throw some light on this.
Anyway - I hope all of the above at least proves useful for others.
    Good Luck

  • Unable to download iMove & iTune updates

I have recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. I am now unable to download iMove and iPhoto updates. I have contacted iTunes and have been told it is a technical problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Worked out what the problem was; evidently Mountain Lion does not like iLife 09 and needs to be updated with iLife11 before it can download. To enable Mountiain Lion to download, iLife11 was installed at the Apple Shop; to access updates I need to purchase iLife11 on my account.

  • Using iMovie footage in FCP: 32-bit floating point audio?

I'd like to use iMovie 7 to capture my DV footage because I like its cataloging and skimming features, and the way it splits up clips based on DV stops. I want to do my editing in Final Cut Pro 5. Unfortunately, I've found that the audio depth in the clips I've captured with iMovie is 32-bit floating point, rather than 16-bit integer, and FCP has to render the audio before it can play back. Strange, since the FCP browser says that the sequence I dropped the iMovie footage into IS 32-bit. Any ideas on how to get FCP to playback this bit depth without rendering, and without having to convert my footage?

Do a search here and you will find all kinds of post on this very subject.
The main problems with using iMove to capture for FCP are
    1. iMovie and FCP capture in very different ways. iMovie captures footage as a DV stream, problematic for editing in FCP
    2. iMovie captures will not give you the timecode from your tape... may or may not be important to you unless you ever need to recapture and reconnect the footage.
In short, if you are editing in FCP... capture with FCP. If you want to split the footage based on tape start/stop, use the Start Stop detect function after you have captured.

  • Imported iMovie footage jitters in FCP - Workaround?

Have a problem in that I have to use segments of footage that were edited in iMovie, but they jitter when I import them into FCP.
I understand iMovie muxes the audio and video, so that is probably the cause, but I need a workaround because there is no other way for me to get the footage. It was made in iMovie and there is no other source for it.
I have QT Pro, and tried exporting the iMovie footage from that as a full res QT movie, but it falls apart when I bring it into FCP. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. Would you be so kind as to
clarify a couple of your points for me:
    1) As I understand it, to extract the audio in iMovie
I simply go: File - Share - Export - Sound to AIFF.
    Is that correct?
) What exactly do you mean by "tinker with the video
with QT Pro". Is there a specfic codec to export it
    as?
    3) Likewise, "importing each into FCP within FCP
requirements". Is there another step here I should
    be aware of.
Also, when I said the image fell apart when I
imported it via QTPro, I meant horizontal lines
appeared, when I played it back in FCP, especially
    during movement.
I appreciate any further help you can give. Thanks.
The following are iMovie processes so you need to consult with iMovie Help.
One can extract audio in iMovie when in its timeline. You extract to a user designated location. That becomes an audio file you should be able to open in Quicktime. You can then determine its properties and if needed use one of the Compressor settings to convert to aif at 48kHz.
I have exported the video residing in iMovie as a highest quality QT movie using QT Pro and import that into FCP.
The only other time I had this iMovie dance, I just recorded everything in the iMovie timeline back to tape and started fresh with FCP.
For me the latter worked better because I had a deadline to deal with and I find iMovie a clumsy puppy.
I have no idea what the horizontal lines are, but I associate those with a Macrovision copy protection scheme on VHS. I assume all looks good in iMovie so that cannot be the issue. If you move to tape from iMovie you will find out really quickly.

  • Unable to capture DV footage from HDV camera

I am trying to capture from a dv tape using the Sony HVR-Z1E, but I keep getting the following message:
Unable to initialize capture device and device control........ This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.
I have tried changing the settings on the camera but to no avail.

    Hi James,
This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem:
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
    Still not working?
Check whether iMovie recognises your camera.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow Apple's instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite harmless!
But if the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • Unable to open iMovie project?

I made a simple iMovie 09 project and burned it to a DVD via iDVD.
Then, to save space on my HD, I moved the project to an external HD.
Now I want to go back to the project to make some edits.   But when took it out of the external HD and placed it on my desktop, I am unable to open it in iMovie.   I've tried simply clicking on the project icon as well as doing File>Import>Movie.  I also tried clicking and dragging the movie icon from the desktop to iMovie with no luck.  iMovie just doesn't see to want to recognize it.
    Can someone help?   Thanks?

    Hi
There are so many things to this.
    A. Flash drive - I even don't know if they would ever work - very doubtful
    B. External hard disks - MUST be Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted -
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO no matter if iMovie, iDVD or FinalCut is used.
    C. In the folder iMovie Projects - There are NO MOVIES - but text-documents related to the projects and this document points to the Raw material in iMovie Events folder and how it is supposed to be Played/Viewed in this particular project. e.g. play Clip A from 00:00:01:13 to 00:03:45:02 and so on. So there are no movies in the project folder.
    D. So if both iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folder are copied over to an external hard disk - Then the iMovie in the second Mac has no links to this and will not find it.
SO to be able to work with one project on two Macs - all moving's of Events and Projects should be done within the iMovie Application - Not on DeskTop/Finder - do not alter or move any folder named
    • iMovie Events
    • iMovie Projects
on DeskTop/Finder - as they can mess-up and be very hard to impossible to mend.

  • Unable to open IMovie Project in IDVD

I have created a 40 minute movie in IMovie 08 (my first). I am unable to open the movie in IDVD 08 and Garage Band. The project name is visible in the media browser but is not available for selection.
I have published the movie to the media browser and it still is not available to IDVD.
I am new to apple computers and have been unable to get help with this problem.

    Here's two things to try:
This frequently helps solve some problems. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.
You'll need to reset some Preferences.

  • Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1

I've captured HD footage onto my old computer (10.4.11) without any problem but now I'm trying on my new one and it doesn't want to know.
First off there was a problem with the Firewire port ejecting my hard drives randomly so I took it to be repaired and they replaced the logic board and the port works fine.
I've looked at all the posts I could find, I've trashed my preferences, reinstalled Final Cut Studio ( after uninstalling then updating the software). I've made sure the camera is set to HDV playback rather than auto and that the iLink HDV/DV conversion is off. I've tried all the easy setups and all the custom ones I could think of but still FCP (5.1.4) won't allow me to capture. On some settings I have had device control but no image, on others it said the camera isn't connected. The only way I've captured footage is by using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 which works fine.
The camera is a Sony HDR-HC7 connected directly to the iMac with a Firewire 800 / iLink cable or daisy chained through my external hard drive with a 400 / iLink cable (neither of which makes any difference) I can also capture SD footage from both the HDV and a Panasonic SD camera when in DV-PAL setup. The HDV camera also shows up as connected in the system profiler.
This is driving me nuts so any help would be appreciated and if there's any other info I can help with to make this clearer let me know.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • I'm unable to download iMovie/iphoto, as i didn't buy the mac brand new, it only gives me the 'accept' button when i try to download, i don't mind purchasing, it just doesn't give me the option. any ideas how i can get around this?

I recently purchased a second hand new macbook air, although it was second hand to me the previous owner had never actually turned it on. So i went through all the set up steps when switching it on for the first time.
My problem is that iPhoto and iMovie are not installed, and when i go to the app store the icons have an accept button, it then prompts me for my apple ID, obviously these a registered to the original owner, and says i need that ID in order to download them, or i'll have to purchase them.
I'm happy to purchase them, but it doesn't give me that option, every time i search for them in the app store they always come up with the accept option and no purchase option.
Any idea how i can get round this would be great fully appreciated.

Something doesn't make sense here, though I'm not saying the previous owner is lying....

  • Why do i keep getting error message while burning a DVD using iMovie footage?

I made an iMovie, loaded it into iDVD, watched it on my MacBook, tried to burn it and received an error message along the way saying that it couldn't continue.  Another pop-up simultaneously said that I had to choose a source for my blank DVD-R.  What am I missing?

How did you load it into iDVD?
    The recommended way is to
    1) in iMovie, use the Share menu to SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER in Large Size.
    2) Open the Media Browser in iDVD (at lower right) and drag in the movie you just shared.
    3) Set up any menus and such and burn your DVD.
    Is that what you did?

  • TA21328 Safari will not display or open PDF files. Unable to view imovies

I resently had a new hard drive installed by the Apple store and they installed Snow Lepard which was my provious OS. I did restore all my files using My Passport Studio and everything what fine except for two things.  I cannot open PDF files through Safari and I am not able to view any of my imovies.

If you have them, you might want to delete either or both of the below mentioned files from the following location “/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/” and install Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat again. Reader and Acrobat have preference items for whether to use them to manage PDFs in Safari.
    AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
Do you have some iMovie project files in iMovie Events and iMovie Projects in your Home folder's Movies folder? Those might be where your "imovies" are. If you did have some, but don't now, then they may be the items you need to restore from a backup. Other than that, I'm not sure what you mean by "imovies", so can you include the steps you take to view "imovies" in a reply, please? Thanks.
