Unaccounted alert sound on 1st gen unibody Macbook Pro

Greetings all,
I am having a slight problem with my 1st gen unibody MacBook Pro. At seemingly random intervals it will play the 'Frog' sound without any user interaction.
I have checked the Console and have not seen any messages. I have also made sure that the sound is not coming from another application that might send a notification (iChat, Skype, RSS-reader, ...)
Is there a way to track what process launched the sound or has someone else experienced this issue as well and can give me some insight in how to get rid of it?
With regards

Could it be the Growl notification sound?
Email notification sound?
Check to see if you have any type of 3rd party sound apps installed.
Also check your alert settings.

  • 1st Gen. Macbook Pro Turns Off Suddenly, Even When Plugged In

    Help Me!
My 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo shuts down without warning after I start it up. Sometimes it's 1 minute into the startup, sometimes its 10. But after installing snow leopard 10.6, it does this everytime without fail. My screen doesn't work, so I have it plugged it into an external monitor. When it's turned on and working, it functions perfectly. But all of a sudden, it will turn off. I copied the power information from the system profiler, which is pasted below. Any help on possible fixes would be great. Maybe some sort of MPU reset or something. Also, I tested the battery I'm currently using in another Macbook Pro of the same exact model, and it works fine. • New unibody macbook pro time machine backup stalling/stalls

I have been using time machine to back up my Macbook Pro 17 (First Gen), I have 2 external Western Digital Drives connected via USB in a RAID (Striped) Configuration. Everything has worked fine for months and the backups are quite snappy...
I just changed to a NEW Unibody Macbook Pro 17 and formatted the drives, set up the RAID configuration again from fresh in disk utility and reset Time Machine and said OK when it requested to use the drive for backups.
The process gets some way into backing up... sometimes 7GB, 13GB, 17GB even 70GB and then just stops. The hard drives(at least one of them anyway i cant tell exactly) spin down and the file count in Time Machine window just stops. There is no error message and the window just stays there saying its backing up but there is no external HD activity. I have to cancel the backup (which sometimes - but not always - causes everything to stall until i unplug the drives by whipping the USB cable out). Everything then works fine i dont need to restart and it just brings up an error message saying that Time Machine failed to backup...
    Any ideas??
I do have antivirus software installed (VirusScan) but i have had that on my previous machine aswell so it cant be that...

I have a MacBook C2Duo (black 2008) customer who has upgraded to 10.5.7 with a new internal and external hard disk and a fresh install of the OS. After doing this, Time Machine constantly stalled at 12.55 GB when backing up to an external disk (USB2). After a lot of reading on the net, I think the problem marks the re-emergence of an old bug where the mdworker task used by Spotlight to index drives is crashing and starting to take up to 99% of the CPUs. At this point, TM simply does not have enough CPU time to work and crawls almost to a halt.
I messed around for a while with Activity Monitor watching the mdworker crash and it is very predictable. Time Machine buddy does not pick it up because of course TM is still working albeit at a snail's pace.
Since mdworker is very associated with Spotlight, I tried setting Spotlight to not index any folders—same problem.
Finally, I set the TM destination drive to be a Private drive in the Spotlight Preferences and it finished without an mdworker crash.
It might be a temporary workaround or it might be coincidence that TM worked this time, so YMMV and Apple should look at this too.

  • Trackpad Model # mid 2009 13" unibody Macbook Pro

What model trackpad can I use to replace the one in my mid 2009 unibody macbook pro?...and where can I get one from a preferably reliable source?
It clicks but doesn't respond unless I press hard.  The Apple store offered to replace it but for a lot.  I'd rather swap it out myself.

First see here for a guide on doing so: iFixit
Once you decide that's something you want to do search for the part.
I did a Google Shopping search and found one around $65, click HERE
I don't have a specific brand that I recommend, just make sure that when you purchase it that it's NEW don't buy anything used, and also make sure there is some kind of warranty: 90-days, 3-months, 1-year, you get the point. Take your time and be wise when purchasing.
Oh, and one more thing. Make sure you have the proper tools. Click HERE to purchase parts. Trust me having the correct parts will make all the difference!

  • No sound when I connect my Macbook pro (2012) to TV via HDMI!

Hi! I have a problem with the sound when I connect my Macbook pro (bought in 2012) to a Phillips HD TV. The strange thing is that it only happens with some videos (specially youtube videos) but the sound works perfectly with films and audio files I have in my computer, and also when I watch TV online (Eurosport player for instance and other similar applications). It's even stranger because it doesn't happen all the time; last week I tried many times to watch some youtube videos and after unplugging the HDMI cable it seemed to work. As I said, with Eurosport player and many films downloaded in my macbook I don't have this problem (sound is ok all the time), and this is why I'm really confused. I suppose it's not a connection problem, otherwise I wouldn't have sound in any video, right? I've tried two different HDMI's cables but nothing has changed. Please, someone help me, as I can't figure out what's happening. Thank you very much!

Well Im not sure what the fix is for your problem, but can you please open up the sound preference next time you connect the philips tv, and make sure that sound output is set to hdmi out. Then try and play your video's etc and see if they are affected.
I can tell you I get a similar problem when, for example, I have a youtube window open and then connect the external display. The youtube video will not sound out through the cable, however if i refresh the window it works. Also the same when I use bluray player on mac, I have to close it and open it again for the sound to output through the external monitor.

  • Driver issue FIXED in Vista / boot camp with new, unibody macbook pro!!

Hay people, I found a fix for the freezing issues with Vista running in Boot camp with the new, unibody Macbook pros. The driver for the 9600M Gt is no good if you install it from the Apple 2.1 version driver disc (Mac osx disc)for some (most) of us.
I needed to go to Nvidia's site and download the one from DECEMBER 08. If you click the "download drivers" tab on the site, scroll past the current driver it wants you to look at (go to the near bottom of page), click the archives, and input your OS version. Also input "Gforce" and "M" series when needed. It will give you a choice of two drivers. DO NOT CHOOSE THE FEB 09 Driver. Thats the BAD driver for most of us. Choose the DECEMBER 08 driver. Download and enjoy. Be sure to roll back the VGA driver (or the current driver) first before you install this. It should work.
I've been through the ringer with this for weeks now and have even tried to take my MBP back to swap for a new one. Apple wont have any of that so I thought I was SOL. Not quite. This DOES work for me with Vista. It also works for Windows & if you have it handy.
By the way, I am posting this for people who HAVE HAD THE FREEZING problems, not for people who haven't. Apparently there are some out there who are running Vista just fine on their unibody MBS's. Most of us are not.
Cheer's-----Seattle, where the evil empire looms dark

This never worked. I sold that machine and got a new 17" unibody. IT, by the way, works just fine. I KNEW it was that **** 15'. It took 30 more seconds to boot up I found out also.

  • Are non-Unibody Macbook Pros still viable for professional Photoshop/Lightroom work?

I currently own a late 2008 Macbook pro (the first unibody) model with a 2.4ghz core 2 duo processor, and I am looking for something similar to get my wife who works with as an upgrade to her crappy old laptop that crashes on her when she has more than a few DNGs open in Photoshop. I was wondering if the 2007/8 Non Unibody Higher End Macbook Pros are still viable for Photoshop/Lightroom work? I know that some of these models seem very old now, but she has a 2005 Windows Toshiba Laptop that can barely handle it's own operating system...so would a decently powered non-unibody Macbook Pro still be viable today or would she have just any many headaches when trying to multitask?
    Thanks, it's my first post!

Thank you everybody for all the replies!
First off, I think we'll wait what the 11th of june will bring us, hopefully a new mac mini. As Michael Wasley stated, the glossy imac screen isn't going to work for him. So that brings us to a Mac Mini or Macbook Pro. I'm using the macbook pro myself for the last couple of years and i'm a great fan of it's capabilities.. but my brother prefers a fixed 'computer' and not a laptop..
At this point i think he's going to buy (the new?) mac mini (and use his own screen), upgrade the RAM to somewhere between 12-16 GB, possible get a SSD drive and for sure get the biggest i7 processor available.
Hopefully that will get things running.
    Kind regards,
    Mark

  • 1st gen mac book pro and SSD drive overheating

Sorry if this has been answered before but I found it hard to find my particular stiruation listed here.  I need some advice!
I have a 1st gen mac book pro 2.33 GHz with 3GB of RAM (I belive its two 2GB modules).
I recently replaced the dead CD drive with an adapter (from ebay) that turns it into a second drive, and installed a 120GB OCZ SSD drive.  This drive is not the startup drive and my 320 GB drive is a backup/storage.
While I was in there I replaced the thermal grease - it had been running hot for ages and I figured that dried out grease could be the reason.  I got some artic silver paste, carefully removed the logic board, cleaned off the new paste, and sparingly applied new paste.  Since I took out the fans in the process I cleaned those and the heat sync too. (all via info online, videos and infomational pages, etc, not with wild abandon)
Everything seems to be running fine (I watched some movies fromt he hard drive.  youtube made it run a bit hot but ok) except when the computer goes to sleep or I close the lid.  Then the computer gets crazy hot and the fans are in overdrive and it won't wake up from sleep.  The power adapter also gets super super hot.
I reset the PRAM and ran permissions, also updated the operating system - its not 10.6.8.
I *just* reset the SMC (we'll see if that has any effect).
I thought I'd ask here before opening up the machine again and poking around.
    Thank yoiu for any advice!

ok, so I think this is the issue - it has to do with the fact that my regular hard drive is a seagate.  This thread is pretty much what has bene happening to me.

  • No sound: alsa snd-hda-intel macbook pro

I can't get sound to work on my macbook pro and I'd appreciate some advice.  lspci shows the following soundcard:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
According to the alsa sound card matrix, this card uses the snd-hda-intel module.  I've followed the alsa article at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ALSA.  Here's what I'm seeing:
    # lsmod|grep '^snd'
    snd_seq_oss 29312 0
    snd_seq_midi_event 6528 1 snd_seq_oss
    snd_seq 46800 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event

    [FAIL]
According to the wiki article, there should be controlC0 and pcmC0D0p devices under /dev/snd.  I think the module isn't being installed correctly.
My system is a 2nd generation macbook pro.  I've read that support for my card was recently added to alsa.  I've had sound working under gentoo and debian by compiling snd-hda-intel statically into kernel 2.6.21.  Can anyone give me advice on how to get this working?
BTW, I'm new to Arch, and I'm really impressed with it so far.  Apart from sound, everything has worked well.

I'll give kamikaze-sources a try.  Thanks.  What exactly is kamikaze-sources?  Neither the AUR page or the homepage (http://kamikaze.waninkoko.es) really explains it.
Has anyone gotten this this sound card to work in Arch and what exactly did you have to do?  Unless kamikaze-sources is really easy to install, I'll probably just compile a custom kernel.

  • Mountain Lion on 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro?

I am currently running OSX Lion on a late 2008 unibody macbook pro that has been upgraded to 8GB of RAM.  It runs perfectly and I am a little woried that upgrading to OSX Mountain Lion might make things run slower or less smoothly.
Is anybody running Mountain Lion on a system similar to mine?  Is it slower?  Faster?  The same?
    Thanks in advance,
    ---Tim

Correct. You can partition the drive and create a separate volume that has about 300 GBs, then clone to this partition. Here's how it's done:
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • Unibody MacBook Pro 17, SSD and Vista x64 - Does it work?

I see many discussions about problems with various brands of SSD drives and Vista x64 under Boot Camp.
Can any of you confirm that Vista x64 will install on a unibody MacBook Pro 17" with the Apple-provided 250g SSD option?

It works well. Don't forget to turn the disk defrag off after installing and booting into Vista.

But nothing i do on disk utility  will complete i keep getting errors and when i try to install mountain lion when i get to where you have to pick where you want to install it all thats there is the usb drive that mountain lion is installed on. Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your hard drive is damaged. it looks like it's not working properly, so you need to change it.
You can get another hard drive at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ Your MacBook needs a 2'5" SATA II hard drive. You can filter the hard drives by the MacBook Pro model, so you can get the hard drives that are compatible with your MacBook. 7200 rpm hard drives will give you extra performance

  • Bent Unibody MacBook Pro

So we've got a Unibody MacBook pro that fell off a bed and the case is bent in the lower right hand corner (not the lid). The computer still functions perfectly but it can't be closed. The local apple authorized store quoted us $1000 to do the repair- which isn't a very good use of $1000. Does anyone know of anywhere that the notebook could be sent to do this repair cheaper, or if it's possible to get the part and do it myself? Any advise would be great.
