Unaccounted Hard Drive usage

I have a Macbook Pro 250 GB storage, 8GB memory running on current software OS X 10.9.4, processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
My storage says I have 40 GB of photos when I know I only have 700 (in all my files>images) I'm pretty sure that number should be less... Also I have about 5000 songs in iTunes but 75% of them are in the cloud. I can't access them when not connected to the internet so why are they still taking up 50GB of space?

You can download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It will show you all of your files and you may compare that with what is shown in Finder.
You might also consider reindexing Spotlight.

  • Un-accounted hard drive usage

My Backup Hard drive keeps filling to capacity and my ststem drive grows in usage:
    Hardware/Software description;
    Mac G4 Dual Processor
    OS 10.4.11
System hard drive 142.93 Gig Used space is 78.02 Gig
Backup hard drive (USB) 76 gig Backup Software Super Duper
About 2 weeks ago, when doing a backup, Tech Tool Pro 5 reported that the backup hard drive had only 2% space available. I purged a lot of no longer needed files/pictures, cache, internet files etc on my system hard drive. The result was now 48.76 gigs used. Wanting to do a complete backup, I formatted the backup USB hard drive and then did a complete backup. The result was that the backup hard drive showed 48.76 gigs, the same as the system drive.
Now roughly 2 weeks later I went to do a backup and Tech Tool 5 reported once again only 2% space available or 76 gigs used space on the backup hard drive.
Tonight I used 'Finder' then 'Get Info' on the system drive. It reported 78.02 Gigs.
I then did the same on the backup drive. It reported 76 gigs used.
Now here is the problem. In the past 2 weeks, I have not added any applications. I have not downloaded any pictures, I have not done anything to add significant files to the hard drive. My usage has been reading/sending email and reading a few forums I follow. So where did the extra 27.24 gigs of used space come from.
Tonight, using 'Finder' then 'Get Info' I clicked on each folder on my system drive and added up the size of each and every folder. My total was 58.39 Gigs, Yet
'Finder' and 'Get Info' shows my system hard drive as having 78.02 gigs. This time I have a difference of 19.63 gigs between Finder and Get Info on the system drive compared actual hand add of all space used.
What is filling up may hard drive and then filling up my back up hard drive when I do backups.
    Thank You
    Paul

Is there any way to do a BLANKET clean of the log files, or do you have to do a clean on each log file ?
Is there any other hidden files I should clean or erase that accumulate over time and steal disk space ?
Best way is to get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
It's a pretty small download Paul.
Is the App Omnidisksweeper designed to totally remove all unused files etc from my HD ?
Nope, you can delete things from within it, but mostly to find where it is the Disk space is used up.

  • External Hard Drive Usage between Mac and PC

I have a WD Passport SE 1 terabyte hard drive that I have backed up my PC (Windows XP) files on. I want to transfer files onto my Macbook Pro (OS X) but it comes up as read only. I've been reading a lot of different forums and stories about not being able to write and how to overcome that but am thoroughly confused.
I use Mac and PC equally as much and it's important for me to be able to use the External HD between both platforms because both computers are not in the same location at all times for a home network type situation.
I like the security of the NTFS but I don't want to do anything (or add any programs) that will make either the Mac or the PC unstable and unreliable.
What do you recommend I use to be able to read/write from both platforms that will be stable?
Why doesn't Apple/Microsoft get together and make a format compatible for both OS's?
Is it better to use NTFS or HFS+? What are the advantages/disadvantages of both?
I'm not very computer savvy on either machine so I need things dumb-ed down for me to understand. My mom is also in the same situation as I am so you would greatly be helping both of us out at the same time. Thanks in advance.

You have 3 basic options to work with. Both Mac and Windows support FAT32 drives in full read/write capabilities. This solution is all many need. There are limitations to this, and the big one comes in the max size for a single file. Using FAT32, a single file has a max size of 4GB (it might be only 2GB, but I believe it is 4GB). As I said, for many this is fine, and they have a simple solution supported out of the box on both OSes.
The second option is to format your external drive in HFS+ (Mac format). Your Mac will have full read/write access, and your PC will not have any access unless you ave the read-only driver from Boot Camp loaded, or if you buy a commercial driver like the ones from Paragon, or MacDrive. Many people will not consider this option unless they work primarily with Macs and only occasionally with a PC.
The third option is to format the external drive as NTFS. Out of the box, Mac OS-X providers read-only support for NTFS drives, and there are several choices for free or commercial drivers to give you full read/write access to the NTFS drive. This option seems to be used the most by people who often work with multiple PC's and sometimes with a Mac or two. I have not seen any of these NTFS drivers that make a Mac unstable, but some of them are quite slow. In my house, we have about 10 PC's and one Mac. It is more cost effective to to put drivers on the Mac vs on the 10 PC's (at $40-80 per PC).
At this point the recommendation depends upon your environment. If you are mostly around Macs and only a small number of PC's consider using a Mac format for the external drives and buying drivers for the few PC's that need to access the drive(s). If you are more like me where you interact with more PC's than Macs, consider using NTFS and getting a free or commercial NTFS driver for your Mac(s). Also keep in mind any computer that may need to access the external drive(s), so if you need a family member to access it, will they need drivers or not? One again, with my world being about 90% PC's and 10% (or less) Macs, having the majority of the computers that have full access to the drive out of the box is the "better" choice, especially considering the other computers (the Macs) can still read the information, just not write to the drives without a driver.

  • Visual graph showing hard drive usage?

Is there anywhere on my mac to see where my hard drive space is being used? Like a graph or a visual showing ard drive space remaining and how much is left and stuff like that?
I can go to info and see the numbers but any other way to view this info. Windows had a pie chart showing how much space was used etc.

Just want to throw my $0.02 in for GrandPerspective ...gives you a graphical layout of what's actually on your drive.

  • HT201250 Mac's Time Machine and external hard drive usage.

If you back up your Mac to an external hard drive with Time Machine, can all those files on the external drive be transferred to a new Mac later?

    Yes.

  • My hard drive usage MASSIVELY multiplied! (MAGICALLY!)

I am LIVID! AHHH! I had only 142 GB used on my iMac's 500GB internal hard drive, and now the iStat widget says it is at 444 GB!! What is going on?! I installed Photoshop Elements 4.0 today, but I SERIOUSLY doubt that any of the two very small projects I fiddled with today would take up such an enormous amount of hard drive space?!
The other app I suspected was Final Cut Express HD, but I cleared out all the capture scrath, autosave, autorender (etc) files, but none of them (or all of them together) could account for this!
I attempted doing some "magic extractor" thing with Photoshop Elements and then clicked OK and it started loading something automatically (I guess it was rendering it). It took forever so I tried to click "cancel" but then the beachball of death arrived and I had to force quit. Could this have done it?
Otherwise, I really don't think that over 300GB could just "magically" appear on my computer. It's too late tonight to call Apple so I'll see if you all can help. I'm calling Apple tomorrow and I really hope I don't have to go through all the aggrivating usual tech support crap.
I have an external hard drive, also. I don't know if that matters, but just letting it be known if it could be a potential suspect (it only has about <50GB on it).
Also, I got an error message that says my start up disk was full which made me check my widget, to see the unbelievablely high number!
This is killing me! I am a video editor and have two projects due Monday, and really can't deal with this! Please, please, please HELP!!!!
    THANK YOU!

    20" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2GB Memory, 500GB Hard Drive

Download a utility called WhatSize (www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com) and use it to find what large files may be taking up space on your drive. You might also consider repairing the drive:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Also consider performing some general maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • Unaccounted Hard Drive Use

Ok, I did look at many other posts, but still could not find the right solution. I am have used 120GB of space on a 320 Hard Dive. I can only account for about 70 GB. Yes I tied about 3-4 of the hard drive space programs and even they cannot account for about 50 GB of space. Yes I have emptied the trash too. It is not that.
So where is the 50 GBs? Any ideas other than trying another disk space use program?

Thanks, but that is grayed out - my trash is showing empty right now. I did look at WhatSize again - and using the nice pie chart it says that I am using about 70 GBs. When I add up the pie pieces, I get about 120 GBs.
I notice now, that my shared file is counted as 50 GB, and the folders that are in the "shared" folder are also counted again (50 GB).
With the pie chart shown in WhatSize - it confirms Capacity of 320, 120 Used, and 199 free - but the total files in the center of the pie chart show 70 GB. So, somehow there are folder being counted twice.
    Interesting, eh? Now what?

  • Hard drive usage / selecting proper hdd for cache & offline lists

As now Spotify uses without any permission my system (win7) drive (C:), which happens to be pretty fully loaded ssd drive.I was just wondering why the F*** is the ssd stacking itself full for "no reason".The reason happened to be Spotifys cache(?), which had grown to over 20GB.Location = C:\users\*****\appdata\local\spotify\data  <--- This is the "cache" i wish to get rid of.I would have three additional 2TB hdd:s for this matter, but there is no way to point a location for cache(?) / offlinelists(?) to use.If i remember right, there was an option for this some time ago? Option for selecting spotifys location on hdd:s should be added, as some cases (such as mine) cache usage makesSpotify usage near impossible. Daily cache removal by force, should not be the only solution for product of this grade. I didn't find any other way to get answers or help of any kind for this matter, so i put this in here. There's pretty much none options left on the Spotify and it's hard as hell to give feedback. Improve this

  • External Hard Drive Usage for Saving Projects

    Hi Folks
I'm really getting into iMovie now, but the consequence is that my Internal Hardrive is getting a little cramped. I have a 250GB Seagate External Drive which is partitoned half Windows and half MAC OSX Extended.
My question is a simple one.
Can I use the MAC Partitioned part of my External Harddrive to store projects in their entirety or will it mess with the paths to the various clips within the iMovie project.
The External Drive is connected via Firewire.
Thanks in advance for any answers
    A.L.I

    Karl,
I'm embarrassed to say that until I encountered my first network with both Macs and non-Apple equipment on it, I thought that only Macs had MAC Addresses.
Imagine my surprise when I was asked to retrieve the MAC Address of an HP Printer. Fortunately, the printer was brand new and the manual was setting right next to it so I quickly looked in the index.
That saved me from having to admit my confusion to my co-worker.
So I do think that MAC Addresses may lead folks to refer to Macs as MACS! That, or perhaps because PC is all caps that it seems logical that Mac should be all caps too.

  • What about those updates and hard drive usage?

    Hello all
I have two questions I cant' find the answer for:
When I get all those great automatic updates to things like my operating system and quicktime etc, What is happening to the older versions- are they being thrown away or do I need to do something to keep files current?
2nd. I'm having a hard time finding out how my harddrive is being filled. It's capacity is 74GB. It says I am using 67GB but my applications are 5GB and my user is 45GB-which includes all music, movies, photos, documents &library. so I can find only 50GB being used. Where is the other 17 GB being used?
thanks for any help you can give.

Hi, Stevemac. Apple's automatic Software Update utility does away with the older software versions that it replaces — they're gone.
Proprietary automatic updaters from some other companies, notably Adobe, do the same. I'm not aware of any that leave the older version in place, but that certainly doesn't mean there aren't any.
Updates that you download and install yourself, manually, can be of at least two different kinds: one kind replaces the installed version with a newer one, destroying or discarding the old version in the process just like the automatic updaters mentioned above. The other kind creates an entirely new installation of the new version, leaving the old one in place for you to remove manually. The latter kind isn't really an updater; it's a full installer. The incomparable GraphicConverter's amazingly frequent updates are of this kind.
Regarding your second question, I sugggest you post it in one of the Tiger forums, which you can find listed here.

  • Help/explanation needed - Using an external hard drive

    Hi everyone,
I bought an external 250gb hard drive as my MBP was very close to full capacity. Yesterday, I had a bit of a scare...
    1. I backed up my Aperture Library onto the external hard drive.
    2. I had about 500 of my favourite images rated 5 star and so I selected these and set up a new project.
    3. I went through my Aperture library deleting folders/projects that I have completed.
    4. I went back into the 5 star ratings and they did not exist. I assume this is because I deleted the master files.
    5. I wanted to have the 5 star images on my laptop and so I connected my external hard drive once again. [This is where I felt I lost control and understanding of what was going on].
    6. I looked for the seperate Aperture files but could only find a file called Aperture Library. I clicked on this but nothing happened at all [I had thought that it would open up Aperture with the previous library].
    7. I dragged the library onto my desktop and waiting for all the images to reload onto my laptop. I then saw that everything was as it was previously, i.e. all the files and images existed. However, my hard drive space was even lower [I assume this was because the current workflow that I had left on the laptop was now duplicated?].
    8. Then I got a message saying my iDisk space is critically low and may damage my Aperture library. Moments later the majority of my images disappeared and a red space appeared where every photo had previously been. Since I have 2 weddings that I am yet to deliver I was very panicked. I tried to drag and drop the Aperture library once again and the message came back that the operation could not be completed due to the current file already existing.
    9. I unplugged the external hard drive and the photos re-appeared [much to my delight]. However, my concern is that I really don't understand what happened and more importantly why. I will need access to the data on the external hard drive in the event in the near future and am worried that the same thing will happen next time I connect it.
As a result of all this I have some questions, as follows:-
    - Have I adopted the completely wrong approach to backing up data?
    - Can the master files be compressed as I shoot RAW and these are huge files?
    - Why could I not use the Aperture library stored on the external hard drive without downloading it back onto the laptop?
and a more general question about file storage...
    - I am confused as to how much hard drive space is being used on my MBP. I have 13gb in Aperture, 1gb in iTunes and 1gb in iPhoto. However, I only have 50gb available, so half the capacity is currently being used. I know that Aperture and Garageband applications use about 10gb between them and there is of course the operating system, but 50gb in total seems a lot. On investigation in the finder screen I see that on my personal drive the Aperture, iTunes and iPhoto data is stored there. However, it is also stored under pictures and music respectively. Does this mean that it is storing duplicate copies of this data and that is the explanation for such high hard drive usage? If this is the case, can one be removed?
I appreciate that this has been a long email, but I felt it was important to illustrate the steps I have taken. As you will no doubt glean from this post I am not the most computer literate person. Any help/explanation would be most appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Jamie

    Hi Jamie.
I am not sure what went wrong with your setup but I will let you know my configuration as an example and you can decide if you think it is a good way to have it. I am asuming you are using ver 1.5?
Like you I have only a Laptop (G4 17" 1.5Ghz 2 Gig Ram - would love a macbook) so hard disk space is a premium. I also have an external firewire drive to hold all the HiRes RAW images. When I download my images from the Camera I do it manually into folders on the external drive (Cataloged by Date and maybe description of location). I then Import the images from those folders into Aperture but use the option when importing to "Store Files - In their current location".
My Aperture library file is on my laptop so all that it has to store is the "Preview" file that gets generated automatically (in the preferences I have it set up to the resolution of my laptop 1440pix so that if I did a slide show it is only as big as my screen - anything more is a waste of disk space IMO.)
I do it this way so that it is easy to find and work on my files with other programs such as Photoshop by going straight to the image rather than exporting from Aperture.
Obviously I cant edit the RAW files while the drive is disconnected but I can still do ratings and keywords without the original files being there.
    I hope this helps.
    Regards
    Andrew

  • My mac become so slow i can't use any app. All the time there is sound of hard drive but no swapping is reported by system monitor.

    Hi Folks,
recently my Mac after latest upgrade of Maverics 10.9.2 degraded performance dramatically to the point that when I switch from one app to another i should wait 30-40 seconds to get the response back from the System. The Hard drive is in use each time I click a mouse button. Sounds like an excessive hard drive usage usually caused by swapping. But System monitor shows Free memory ) Swapping and plenty of Idle CPU.
I tried to find the Process that might over uses the disk but all appear to be Ok. i couldn't spot any process that would over use the IO.
IO looks normal from System Monitor.
I checked the Apple Support whenever it is a defected hard disk issue but according to serial this Mac is not under disk replacement program.
Any tips on what should I do to find the root cause?

According to all diagnostics everything is Ok
That's kind of worries me not to be able to find the bottleneck having more than 20 years experience with UNIX

My hard drive on my Imac keeps clogging up automatically. The personal folder is now 925 GB which is much larger than the sum of the underlying subfolders. I cannot see what"s causing this. Anyone?

You may try one of these utilities to spotlight exactly where the hard drive usage has gone crazy.

    Items to check manually:
Duplicate iTune libraries, or music files that are in itune folder AND loose on the harddrive
Download folder that hasn't been emptied
         Backup software location

  • Hard Drive fails every 4 months

I bought my MacBook in September. My HD had a mechanical failure in December and then again in April. The damage was so severe that I lost all my data both times. Is this a common problem with these drives (FUJITSU MHW2120BH), or could there be a problem with my laptop that is causing these failures?

I doubt this is a contributing factor to the drive failure, but insufficient RAM will increase hard drive usage for virtual memory. How much RAM do you have in that machine?
Possibly, excessive heat could be a contributing factor to drive failure. One last resort option to recovering data from a dead drive is to remove the drive and put it in a plastic bag in the freezer overnight. With the mechanisms slightly constricted by the cooler temp, you may have a short window of opportunity to read data from the drive before it heats up and seizes again. (not sure if that is just an urban myth or if it really works...)
Still your experience with drive failures seems to be a statistical anomaly, or just plain bad luck.

  • N91 splitting messages between hard drive and inte...

    Hello.
I have a lot of messages that were taking up a lot of space on the internal memory and making the phone perform sluggishly. So under Messaging > Settings > Other > Save messages, I set it to save them on the N91. However, I feel it might not be so efficient du to the hard drive usage, as I also have several mailboxes set up which I regularly check hence increased drive usage = low batery.
However, if I then change the option to use the internal memory, messages are saved to the new location but my existing messages/mailboxes become inaccessible.
My question is, how can I move just, say my mailboxes and thlast wee or so worth of messages to internal memory, have that used for new messages, have the older ones saved on the hard drive but still have them accessible to me?
    Thanks.

Ah thanks, but that is a shame. I do of course try to keep the numbers down, but due to circumstances I have to keep records of all correspondence (it's saved me several times already).
I do find it odd though that once you've changed the location of messages you can't see the ones in the original location even though they are still present. Is there no app or hack that can allow me to at leave move messages between the locations (and more importantly my mailboxes) to the internal memory? I suppose I could leave with changing the storage setting if I needed to look at older messages on the hard drive, but having to re-setup all the mxilboxes just because they become 'hidden' is a real pain.
    Thanks again.
