Unalble to compose Gmail in Safari

Question

More often than not, I am unable to compose messages in Gmail using the lastest version of Safari. Here's what happens:
-  When I click the To: field, type a letter to pull up likely addresses, and select the one I want, nothing changes; the letter I've typed is all that appears in the field.
-  When I click the CC letters to add a recipient in the carbon copy field, the letters disappear. Similarly for BCC; clicking them only causes the letters to disappear and does not produce a field.
-  When I drag a file from my desktop to add it to the message as an attachment, no progress bar is shown and no attachment is noted.
Despite this odd behavior, if I save the message at any point, then go to another mailbox (such as Inbox), then return to Drafts, the draft will show that the To: field is populated with the selection I had made, and the attachment has been recorded. Nevertheless, at this point, if I wish to add a blind carbon copy, the BCC letters simply disappear when clicked.
This odd behavior predominates—it happens more often than not—but every now and then, with no rhyme or reason, the composing feature works precisely as it should. (Note: As a workaround, I resort to opening the latest Chrome browswer, where I have never any problem in composing e-mail messages in Gmail.)
I'd be grateful if anyone knows what is going on and whether I am doing something incorrectly.
