Unassigned photos

how do i find unassigned pix in the aperture library? can anyone assist please? thanks, francois

i should have stated that unassigned means not in any album, project or folder
the pictures are just "lost" between others in the library

are you talking about image files stored somewhere in the Aperture library package, that you see in he Finder, but cannot see, when you are browsing your Aperture library in Aperture?
Then check all search fields in the Aperture Browser and the Library Inspector, if the exclude images from displaying. If all search fields are cleared, but you still cannot see all images in Aperture, then rebuild your Aperture Library:

There is one single source of images, that you can browse in Aperture, but you do not see in any projects, until you auto import them, and that is the Photo Stream. But as long as you do not import the images you see in the stream, they are not part of the Aperture Library; they live in the Caches in your User Library.

does anyone know of a script or something available to find unassigned pix in the "photo" library that are not assigned to "folders" or "albums"? and......
i've bought into some clean up software that's supposed to help find duplicate pix in iphoto, but they either crash or don't work............. any solid ideas?
i'd like to sort out stuff before changing to snow leopard.................

that was quick! i tried dup annihilator a few years ago, but found it a bit disconcerting because it did not give enough? info on stuff deleted?........... or maybe i was impatient?
i recently bought TidyUp! but it crashes 2/3 through the search and support from them suggested " find the troublesome image"???????? in about 160 000 images....... huh? that will take me a lifetime!
also, some black and white images i have in iphoto appears duplexed? together with other stuff when i view them in iphoto but when dragging them to desktop appear normal............ a bit inconvenient............
one remark about iphoto in ilife 09....................... the fa(r)ce recognition really slows down things......... does one need 16 gig and 8 cores to make it run as fast as iphoto ilife 08? ..wish apple had the option to switch out/off face recognition............ or maybe it's to help the FBI and CIA do some underground work? hehehe.......

Find unassigned photos and duplicates

Not sure what happened when I upgraded to iLife o9, but lost lots of photos out of 7700 or so. So I first I rebuilt it. Then used iLibrary manager and made a new one by merging an older library that looked like it had some of the missing pics with the current one. Then I ran Duplicate annihilator 3 different ways because I ended up with 9700 pics. It found around 1100 dupes. When I look at the photos, I found so many duplicates still there. How can I get rid of them?
And then I would also like to find photos that are not in an album but can't seem to figure out the correct way to set up a smart album for this? Thanks

Reports on Duplicate Annihilator are very positive and if you're having issues with it by all means go to the website and tell them your story. They may be able to help make it more effective for you.
iPhoto has no ability to sort duplicates itself.
To find photos by date use the calendar tool (click on the magnifying glass in the search box) or use a Smart Album:
Date -> Is -> whatever

Finding all photos not in any album

Hello,
I am a user of PE10.
I imported about 7000 photographs and am organizing them into albums. To ensure I assign all photos to at least one album I would like to display all unassigned photos, i.e. photos not in any album yet, so that I can assign the to albums.
Right now I have to click "Show All" and scroll through 7000 pictures to find ones I have not assigned yet :-( very tedious.
Is there anyway to show only unassigned pgotographs?

In thumbnail view click Show All or launch the Organizer from scratch.
Then click the Find menu and choose the criteria you need.

What album is photo in?

Is there a way to click on a photo in the library and find out what album it is in, if any?

You can however find images that are not in any album
File>new smart album
Name album "unassigned photos"
the conditions are;
"album" "is not" "any"
also, there is a tedious way to find out what albums a photo is in.
Write down the name of all your albums and number them from 1 - whatever.
Open up iPhoto['s preferences and make a new keyword for each number, i.e.; 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
Highlight the first album in the source column
File>select all
Give them the number keyword for that first album
do this for all the albums.
when you are done, you can see what numbers/keywords there are for each image and know the albums they are in

Ideas to Improve Tagging of photos in PSE Organizer

I've been using PSE since V2 and recently upgraded from PSE 11 to PSE 13. While PSE is solid and has some nice new features, it's apparent after some use that my hopes that manual face tagging would be greatly improved were not realized. I take some responsibility for this as I've grumbled about the unnecessary steps and lack of features in this area and have been silent. So, I have some suggestions which would be really, really nice to see in an update to the Photoshop Elements Organizer.
The thrust of this posting is to improve manual tagging of pictures: Steps one does to augment tagging after "Add People" and "Add Places" has been used.
Please let me know what you think of this list and I'll submit a revised version as a development suggestion. Which ideas are good? workable? Which ones are half baked? Have I missed features that already exist so these suggestions are unnecessary?
Recently Used tags:
When tagging a set of pictures it is highly likely to reuse tags across many pictures.
If the tags are from many areas in the tag group structure it requires opening and closing parts of the group tree to access the tags. This is arduous if one has a large number of tags.
Recommend providing a "Recently Used Tags" in the list of tag sections below Keywords, People, Places, and Events.
Recently used tags should provide a lot of tags in Most Recently Used order - 100 at a minimum. Tagging weddings and other group events involve using a lot of tags.
Recently used tags should include all types of tags - people, places, events, etc.
This approach would be beneficial when PSE fails to find faces as well as when non-face tags need to be applied to pictures.
Favorite tags:
Add a "Favorites" tag structure along with People, Places, Events, and Recently Used from above.
Allow tags to be assigned to favorites by selecting a tag and right click "Add to Favorites".
Allow tags in Favorites to be reordered by dragging up and down in the list.
Allow tags to be removed from Favorites by selecting the tag with right click "Remove from Favorites".
Adding face tags for faces that were not found (no box on the face) requires way too many steps for a picture selected in the organizer (seven steps). Today one must:
Press "Mark Face" button.
Drag rectangle placed in upper left to a face.
Size rectangle to the face.
Click in name area below rectangle.
Type beginning of name.
Select name from list
Click green check to confirm selected name.
First suggested alternative for face tagging (3 steps):
Right (or left) click and drag to create rectangle on face - Organizer recognizes this operation and marks face and opens name box below.
Type beginning of name in name box.
Select name from list. When name is selected it is confirmed - no green check to confirm selected name. In the unlikely event one incorrectly selects a name it can always be corrected or the face box removed.
Second suggested approach to quick face tagging:
Open one Tags/Info and expand one of the tag structures: People, Places, Events, Recently Used tags, or Favorites and navigate to a tag.
Drag a tag (that is a person) into a unassigned facial recognition box. This completes the face tag.
If no box exists for a face, right click and drag a tag to a face. The default sized square is created on center of release point at end of drag and the tag is assigned to the face. Allow the user to resize the square to margins of face and hit enter to complete tag. Using right click for this process differentiates a new face tag from the standard left click which assigns the tag to the photo or an empty face tag box.
This approach requires one or two steps per tag unless the tag needs to be located in the tag strucure.
Other photo tagging issues:
Do not suggest a person for a face tag if they are already face tagged on the picture as they probably aren't in two places on the same picture.
When clicking on a blank name for an empty face tag PSE provides a list of names that is barely wide enough for 3 names. A larger list of suggested names should be provided - it could extend beyond the entry area for the name and below it. If face recognition does find a good match PSE should include in the list any people tags which are assigned to the photo but have not been tagged to a face. Anyone having used PSE for a long period of time likely has many pictures which are tagged with people but are not face tagged. This approach would reduce the effort in selecting a person.
Sometimes a lot of non-faces are detected in a picture. Removing these boxes requires separate clicks on each box's 'X'. Suggest a context menu on the photo, 'Remove unused face tags' to clear them' in one step.

Problems importing photos with a color label.

I'm trying to import photos and assign a color label at the same time. My idea is to know what pics are just imported and put they into "status 0" of my workflow, that is, the pic is just imported and need to be accepted/rejected, then be classified, then made basic corrections, etc, etc. I'm going to change color labels to go from red to green status... a tipical workflow.
OK, this is what I did:
Import pics:
* I select the directory and create/assign a new metadata preset.
* In this metadata preset I set author/creator and some other IPTC fields.
* Also I put the word "red" in Label field.
* Do the import...
What I can see then:
The photos are imported and the red label is visible. You can see the red label in the grid view (at every photo's bottom) and also, at the bottom toolbar, you can see that the red label is checked. If you click at the small label at the photo's bottom you can see the small menu with the red label checked.
OK, it seems that the color label is imported but...
In the filmstring, if you filter to see only the red labeled pics... nothing is selected !! You have to unassign and assign again the red label and this time you can filter by color label.
What is happening ? Does Lightroom read the color label from two different fields from the metadata ? Is something not synched during the import process ?

Sorry if I couldn't explain correctly. English is not my main language...
I know you can assign names to the existing colors label and create different sets. I just create my own set.
What I'm refering to is to the Label field that is part of the basic IPTC data into a metadata preset. I'm not sure if it's the same field that is used to assign color labels.
What I did was to create a metadata preset, assign the word "red" as the value of the IPTC Label field and then apply this preset into an import. All the pics were imported with the red label set, so yes, it is possible to do the import and set the color label. The problem is that you can't use the filters that are into the filmstring view. So there is some mismatch here: the red color is shown at the bottom of the pics imported, but the filmstring filters can't "see" that the pics have this color label assigned.

Epson scanner perfection 1200 photo not working since ML

hi,
my epson scanner perfection 1200 photo worked fine on snow leopard. since my upgrade to mountain lion (no lion in between), i cannot use it any more - although it is still in the list of supported models.
now i am on 10.8.2. i have downloaded the latest SW update with the scanner connected and switched on.
i can assign, unassign and reassign it in utilities. i can change settings (i cannot change the selection for scanning, though). but as soon as i do an overview scan, it will abort. same behaviour when trying to scan.
this happens identically when working in image capture or direct from print scan utility.
i have tried to remove the epson scan plist and the image capture plist from user preferences. no effect.
some time ago already, i got in touch with epson service. they sent an outdated installer and provided information different from their website. :-(
questions:
- did anyone get this scanner to work with ML?
- any ideas what to do?

Go on the Epson web site and download the drivers. Follow the simple instructions and be ready to drive your scanner as before !

Keyword list: fading out unassigned keywords

Working with large keyword lists a feature to fade out all unassigned keywords would be fine.

Some of us import a large controlled vocabulary, so the majority of the keywords may not, in fact, be applied to any photos (yet, or ever.)

Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

PSE icons instead of the photo. I need to view photos at a glance. Please help me????

Please help, this is driving me crazy. I have downloaded my free PSE #9, it came with my Leica Camera. I cannot view at a glance any of my photos. There is only an icon that reads, PSE. To view any of my photos, I must click select and then preview. This gets old, and I am doing 4 times the work. I am having to use the dates to guess where my photos might be. I hate this! My old Photo Shop #5 didn't do this. When you went to my pictures, you could see every photo.
I have tried the right click and open as any program. What ever program I choose, that is the icon that appears. No photo. Still no good.

Hi,
Are you using Windows Explorer to view the files?
If so, load Explorer, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options.
Click on the View tab and make sure the first option (Always show icons, never thumbnails) is not checked.
Click on OK and see if that is any better.

I create a birthday calendar in iCal and then click on it in iphoto at the begining of the calendar project each year. Some how the birthday did not populate the photo calendar. Is there a way to add the birthday iCal calendar into the calendar project?

If you first select the calendar on the left, so that its background is highlighted blue/grey, when you make a new events they should be added to that calendar.

Can a family member use my iCloud storage for photos?

Hope I'm not being obtuse, but the answer to this isn't clear to me from the various "help" menus.
The situation is complicated by my living 50 miles from my elderly father.
I need about 50 GB for my photos, but have to pay for 200, of course.
So, is there a way for my Dad, who is a member of my iCloud/App/Whatever family to move HIS photo library from HIS computer to MY iCloud account without having to purchase more iCloud space for his personal account? (His photo library also - barely - exceeds the limit of the next increment of storage available so that i'll have to buy him 200GB if there isn't a way to share the storage from my iC account.
Hope this question is understandable - I don't know how else to frame it.

Adobe Stock Photos Stuck in Trash and Photoshop CS2 won't run!

Okay, I apparently did something stupid. I'm not even sure how this happened, but I realized that Adobe Stock Photos folder was sitting on my desktop (I'm using OS X 10.5.6). I don't know when this happened and I didn't think I needed it so I dragged it to the trash. NOW I cannot run any of my Adobe software (includes Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2 and GoLive CS2).
I can see the folder sitting in my trash, but it won't let me drag it back out. So, just as a test, I tried dragging out the one other file (.jpg) and I can't get that one either. I know this isn't a Mac forum, but I'm desparate and cannot find anything to help me.
Probably I am going to have to reinstall everything and (of course) I can't find my CDs!!! Please don't get angry if I'm asking the wrong question. I've done an internet search and I cannot find any solutions.

Adobe stock photos does not even exist anymore.
Have you tried deleting your trash? I have no Adobe stock Photos on my computer and everything works. try restarting the computer.

Filename in Photo Gallery

Since updating my iPad2 to iOS 8, the filenames have vanished from the photo gallery. I am a designer and I used to take the filename of photos as reference for my clients. I have more than 8000 pictures in the gallery. Please HELP

I Can't ever recall seeing file names in the default Photos app. Perhaps you were using iphoto on your iPad which is no longer supported? Check the App Store for other photo handling apps To find one that shows the file names. I use Photo Manager Pro to show photos to my clients. It does a better job of that than the Photos app. you can set the preferences there to display the file name.
