Unattended install with Retail Key/DVD

Hi,
Another daft question that I hope someone can answer and save mne finding out the hard way!?
Can I use an answer file to create an unattended install of Vista (with SP1) but using retail media and retail key, or does this only work with OEM key/media?
Reason for asking is that I have five idenical test PC's to set-up with Vista SP1 for some trials on file transfers etc and it wouldn't half be easier if I could do these unattended?
Thanks
Ridesy

Yes. It should work on OEM media as it is using the same WIM image.

  • How to install a clean install with leopard upgrade DVD!

Does somebody know how to do an clean install with a Leopard upgrade DVD?
I bought my MacBook for 1 week ago, and them said that i would get leopard sent later. And when i get it, its a upgrade cd that i cant install only leopard on my ny frsh hard-drive. *** apple?

First, there is no such thing as a "clean install" option in OS X. But the "cleanest" install is to start with a reformatted drive (using Disk Utility's "Partition" tab), followed by an install of the OS that will be cleansed of any traces of OS or file system corruption. (The "unclean" options, "Upgrade" & "Archive & Install" won't be possible, & the erase part of "Erase & Install" is at this point redundant.)
However, if you use Setup Assistant (which runs after rebooting) or Migration Assistant to bring over copies of old system components, applications, & settings, you may be reintroducing something "unclean" from the old versions.
This said, if your up-to-date disk is just an updater (nobody seems to know yet), you can do a "cleanest possible" install by following the above with your original Tiger Installer disk, letting it reboot & not importing anything during setup, & then following the instructions supplied with the up-to-date disk to upgrade. At this point, you may want to clone the startup disk for future reference, before adding back in your apps & user files by whatever method(s) you chose.

  • How to customize install with the restore DVD's

HI,  Is there a way to customize the install of the restore DVD's for Vista.
For example, I wouild like to have 2 partitions.  Also, I do not want all the extras installed, mcafee, etc.
    Thanks

Is the restore partition intact on your Thinkpad?
If you run the restore from the restore partition it gives you the chance to do a "Custom Restore" where you can choose to not install some of the programs.
When you run the cd's it wipes all partitions and installs the resore partition. Then it restores windows from the restore partition without the option to do a custom restore. You would have to restore asecond time from the hard drive to get the custom restore.

  • Product Key Prompt - Unattended Install - Key supplied in windowsPE & specialize Passes

    Using 2 chained unattend.xml files:
    Autounattend.xml - ProductKey specified in
windowsPE pass for image selection and specialize pass for activation setup
Reseal - Audit specified in oobeSystem pass
Reseal - OOBE specified at end of auditUser
    Unattend.xml contains remaining
    oobeSystem settings
All runs fine except for Product Key prompt in OOBE.
    Please advise

    Thank you for your reply.
However, upon investigating various permutations, I found the installation behavior (with retail key) differs from the statement you make and the documentation you cite, as follows (assumes no user interaction desired and internet connection):
If the Product Key is not supplied at windowsPE, the installation fails. If it is supplied, then user is not prompted at Windows Welcome except...
After oobeSystem Reseal to Audit and subsequent Audit mode
Reseal (or Sysprep) to OOBE, the user
IS prompted for Product Key at Windows Welcome whether or not the key was supplied at
windowsPE pass only or at both windowsPE and
specialize passes. Note that the generalize pass was not used.
    Please advise.

  • Installing Full Retail Win 8 Pro on a Lenovo System supplied with Win 8 Standard/Core

    Hello,
So I have a Thinkpad Twist that came with Windows 8, and I am trying to reinstall Windows 8 Pro on. I have a copy of Win 8 Pro OEM and I don't want to purchase the upgrade since I already have the full version. I would like to put this machine on a domain in my test lab, and only able to do that running Win 8 Pro.
So, I booted off a USB DVD and installed the OS, however once it was installed, I noticed it was still the standard Win 8. So I tried it again, with the same result. When I do the reinstall I am partitioning and formatting both drive on the Twist, so I'm not sure why it's reverting back to standard Win 8. Also when I install Win 8 Pro it never asks me for a key, so something is odd, and it's pulling that old standard Win 8 info from somewhere.
I went into the BIOS and noticed there are some security settings to avoid letting you install a new OS. So I disabled all of those, and tried the install again with the same result. I don't get it.
Does anyone know how to totally clean the disk(s) so that I can just do a clean install of Win 8 Pro? Or what settings I need to change in the BIOS to allow it to let me do a fresh install? I have been working on this for over 8 hours now.. starting to pull my hair out.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the input guys. I ended up finding the solution here..

I had to do an unattended install which supersedes the product key embedded in the BIOS flash memory.

  • Installing Full Retail Win 8 Pro on a Lenovo System supplied with Win 8 Standard/Core

If you are attempting to install a full retail (or similar) copy of Win 8 Pro on Lenovo system that came with standard Win 8 (also referred to as Win 8 Core) installed from the factory, you will run into an issue at install time.
By MS design default , full Win 8 Pro retail (etc) versions look for a key embedded in the BIOS (often referred to as an OA3 or OA3.0 key).  If  that key does not match the version of Win 8 you are trying to install, the install will fail without offering the option of entering the retail key that was supplied with your full retail (etc) Win 8 Pro.
Microsoft has issued a "FAST PUBLISH" support article on how to work  around this design approach. See
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2796988
Note that this workaround requires the creating and placing of a PID.txt  file by methods which are not entirely described in the support article, so be prepared to do some more digging for all the relevant information.

    I don't work for Lenovo

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo H520g essential desktop, which came with Windows 8 SL pre-installed. I bought my Lenovo on August 8 2013 and as of the November 2013 the machine was updated to Windows 8.1 Single Language.
Today, April 14th 2014, I bought Windows 8.1 Pro on a full retail DVD from a local physical Microsoft reseller. I have successfully installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my H520g. The installation run smooothly, no problems at all.
The steps I took were as follows:
    1)  Checked the UEFI BIOS to see if the DVD drive were included on the boot list and set it as the first boot device.
    2) Booted the computer with the Windows 8.1 pro DVD on the optical drive.
    3) Entered the Windows 8.1 License Key that came on the retail DVD.
    4) Erased all partitions from the HDD were Windows 8.1 SL were installed.
    5) Proceeded normally with the installation
Yesterday I made a phone call to the Microsoft support and they assured me that on all computers that come with Windows 8 SL pre-installed, it is possible to install Windows 8.1 Pro. The conditions are: 1) you must install the full retail version of Windows 8.1 Pro, not the OEM version; 2) you must do a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro, not the install that preserves files and applications.
    Cheers,
    PauloBR

  • Install Leopard on a laptop with a broken DVD drive

I went to install Leopard on an older laptop (PB G5) only to discover it had a broken DVD drive. I tried to install it from my intel MBP (running Snow Leopard) via ethernet, firewire, and also via a flash drive, all with no success.
It used to be easy to do this with earlier versions of OS X. Is it still possible to do this? If so, can you tell me how?
    Thanks.

I'll assume you mean PowerBook G4; as a PowerBook G5 was never produced.
    1) Put the DVD in your MacBook Pro.
    2) Boot the MacBook Pro while holding down T.
    3) Hook the MacBook Pro and the PB together with a FireWire cable.
    4) Boot up the PB while holding down the Option key.
    5) Select the DVD to boot from, and boot up. Install.
This is all assuming that you are using a retail Leopard DVD (starry pattern with a big X on it.) A grey coloured Leopard DVD that shipped with a new Intel Mac will not work on any PowerPC Mac.

You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...

Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.

Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD. Some have it on the Disc #2.
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.

  • Windows 8 not picking up embedded product key when installed with WDS

Ok so here is my setup.
Server 2008 R2, running WDS and serving various images.
the Windows 8 image is a vanilla boot.wim and install.wim imported from a system builder iso.
If I burn the ISO or extract it onto a USB drive, then the install process picks up the embedded Windows product keys no problem.
If I deploy the same thing via WDS, the setup wizard asks for the keys, ergo, is not picking them up from the UEFI firmware. Is this an inherent limitation of WDS or am I doing something wrong?

    Hi,
As it has been a while since you post the question, whether the issue still exists? Have you tried to entered the product key in unattended file? If issue still exists could you share the unattended file with us?

  • Re-installing original retail Leopard with 8800GT

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 which I upgraded to the 8800GT graphics card.
I also have an original retail Leopard DVD which was bought a few days after it was released.
I've been considering doing a reinstall of Leopard recently - my Mac has become noticeably slower in recent months and crashes more than it used to. Whatever they say about Mac OS being very robust, it just feels like a good time for a refresh (it'll also help me to clean out a lot of crap installed over the years which is just cluttering my system now).
I've heard that it's not possible to reinstall Leopard with the 8800GT because it doesn't have the necessary drivers (the graphics card having been released after the OS) and that the only way to do it is to replace the original Radeon 1900XT, reinstall and then swap the cards again.
Is there any way to do this without needing to swap the cards. I've moved overseas since buying this Mac and the 1900XT is back in my home country in storage, so shipping it out here would be a hassle I'd like to avoid if there's another way. If I bought the most recent retail version of Leopard presumably this would work ok?

Leopard has the drivers for the 8800, so there shouldn't be any problem. However, you may not have to reinstall OS X if the only problem you have is "slowness." Read the following for suggestions:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    10. MimMac (Commercial)
    11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
    12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at www.versiontracker.com and www.macupdate.com.
And, be sure to repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Please help with unattended install

Has anyone got this to work unattended?  This is one of the worst installers I've have to deal with.  Why can't I just have the customization wizard like with Adobe Reader?
We have a volume license key for this, so I can't just give the key and the installer out to the users to install themselves, as a result, I'm stuck since this just doesn't work per the recommended documentation.  I followed the document per Adobe found here: http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/openoptions/pdfs/manualenterprisedeployment_cs4_help.pdf <-- Adobe claims that the same doc for Creative Suite can be followed per Captivate
This is what I did, step by step.
    1.  Extracted the original .exe I got from our Adobe volume license site yielding what would appear to be the same thing as what's on the CD
    2.  Ran setup.exe --record=1
    3.  Stepped through the wizard, entering the license key and accepting the EULA.
    4.  I now have both the "Adobe Captivate 4.install.xml" and "Adobe Captivate 4.remove.xml"
    5.  I renamed the xml files to install.xml and remove.xml, respectively
    6.  Copied the xml files into the root folder containing "Setup.exe"
    7.  Created a "application.xml.override" file containing the following (saved as UTF-8):
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <Configuration>
    <Payload>
    <Data key="Registration">Suppress</Data>
    <Data key="EULA">-1</Data>
    <Data key="Updates">Suppress</Data>
    </Payload>
    </Configuration>
**From what I can tell, I should now have what I need to do an unattended install**
    8.  Tried to install using the following command:
          "setup.exe" --deploymentFile="install.xml"
**Completely useless.  This simply launched the installer and halted at the product key window**
    9.  Tried to install using the silent tag with this command:
         "setup.exe --mode=silent --deploymentFile="install.xml"
**Again, completely useless.  This bombed out at the command line with "Exit Code: 7"  **
According to Adobe, this means "Unable to complete the silent workflow"
Can anyone shed some light on why this isn't working for me?
    !!UPDATE!!
I tried adding this line to the override xml file.  I tried the key with and without the dashes and neither seemed to make a difference.
    <Data key="Serial"  protected="0">xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx</Data>

OK, I finally got to the bottom of this mess....
#1 - When the --record=1 tag "recorded" the installation and created the install.xml file, it added a line which specified the installation media path (which was pointed explicitly to my desktop since that's where I ran setup --record=1 from).  I had to remove that line
#2 - It detected that the cpu was 64bit (regardless of the fact that the OS was 32-bit) and appended a line in the install.xml file indicating such.  I had to remove that line
    #3 - It appears that the installation call is case-sensitive!  "Setup.exe" --mode=Silent --deploymentFile="install.xml"
Finally #4 - I wanted this to be "unattended" vs "silent" which apparently can't be done (so I heard).  If you want to hide your product key and have the users not be involved with the installation itself, you HAVE to use the silent tag.
    Dear Adobe,
    Absolutely terrible

Any suggestions that preserves a simple workflow much appreciated.
