Unattended Installation of Sync Services

FIM Team, I'm working with a customer attempting to automate the installation of the FIM Synchronization Service. We have the FIM 2010 R2 SP1 installation media and have created a Windows Installer Transform according to
this TechNet article. We'd like to deploy the Synchronization Service database on SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition SP1, but when we run the unattended installation using msiexec
we get "Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service requires a running instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 or better." We can run through the installation manually without any issues.
Cheers,
Tom Houston, UK Identity Management Practice

Could you post your command line maybe? I remember having some issues with this a few years back, when I did some automating of this. My lab is down at the moment, but I found this (parameters for automating installation of Sync Service) from my PowerShell
installation scripts which may or may not assist you -
if ($SQLServerInstance) { $SQLInstance = "SQLINSTANCE=$SQLServerWithInstance" }
$Arguments = "/LV $LogFile $QuietParam /i ""$MsiFile"" STORESERVER=$SQLServer $SQLInstance SERVICEACCOUNT=$SyncServiceAccount SERVICEPASSWORD=$SyncServiceAccountPassword SERVICEDOMAIN=$DomainNetBIOSName Reboot=ReallySuppress GROUPADMINS=$SyncGroupAdmins GROUPOPERATORS=$SyncGroupOperators GROUPACCOUNTJOINERS=$SyncGroupAccountJoiners GROUPBROWSE=$SyncGroupBrowse GROUPPASSWORDSET=$SyncGroupPasswordSet FIREWALL_CONF=1 ACCEPT_EULA=1"
Start-Process -FilePath MSIEXEC.EXE -ArgumentList $Arguments -Wait

  • Trying to install iTunes 10.7 fails - "The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\common\files\apple\MobileDeviceSupport\Sync Services\....\Windows

I am trying to install iTunes 10.7 and keep getting this error message (I am running Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit):
"The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\common\files\apple\MobileDeviceSupport\Sync Services\....\Windows"
There seem to be other threads that deal with other permission errors, those fixes did not work for this.
    Thanks

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Sync Services eliminated from Mavericks - can no longer sync contacts

I clearly made a big error updating to Mavericks. I only discovered after the installation that Mavericks no longer supports Sync Services, which was critical to my ability to sync my personal contacts and calendars to all of my devices. In the absence of restoring my computer back to Mountain Lion, I am wondering whether there is anything I can do, but I fear the incompatibilities are too great to surmount.
My work email, contacts, and calendar are on a 2003 Microsoft Exchange server, and I have no power to change that. That apparently means that the only Mac email client I can use to sync my work contacts and calendar is Microsoft Entourage 2008. (The email is less of a problem, as I believe I could access it through IMAP.) I had also been using Entourage for many years for my personal email, contacts, and calendar, so it has been nice having everything centralized in one program. To sync my personal contacts and calendar, I was using Sync Services to sync everything first with Apple's Address Book and iCal/Calendar, and then those were synced with my online Google account to serve the rest of my devices.
I had everything set up, as described above, to conveniently sync everything in all directions. Then came Mavericks and the unexpected loss of Sync Services. Now, Entourage 2008 is completely isolated from the outside world with regard to contacts and calendar events, and I believe the same would be true of the newer Outlook 2011. (I never even bothered to upgrade to Outlook 2011, because it apparently is not compatible with 2003 Exchange Server, so it would not have functioned with my work contacts and calendar.) Apple Mail is also apparently not compatible with 2003 Exchange Server. I tried DAVMail to serve as an intermediary to no avail.
Then, I thought, well, perhaps I could continue to use Entourage 2008 for work email, contacts, and calendar, and switch to Apple Mail, Address Book, and Calendar for my personal email, contacts, and calendar. That is not particularly convenient, but perhaps it would not be too bad. However, I cannot figure out how to transfer my hundreds of calendar events from Entourage 2008 to Apple Calendar. There is an "Import from Entourage" function in the Calendar program, but nothing ever gets imported. It will launch Entourage, if Entourage is not already running, and it will crash Entourage sometimes, but nothing ever gets imported.
I can also export my calendar events from Entourage in RGE format (some sort of archive format), and I could probably also get them into Outlook 2011 and then export them in OLM format. However, Calendar cannot handle either of those either. I am also not particularly impressed with the functionality of Calendar relative to Entourage/Outlook's calendar system.
So, now I am wondering whether my best option is to restore my computer to Mountain Lion and hope that my work will eventually change to a 2007 or newer version of Exchange Server. It seems that there are a lot more syncing options on the Windows side of things, as well, so I am thinking my next computer is going to be Windows, and I am due for a new one soon.

I restored to 10.8.5 using Time Machine. However, Time Machine immediately seemed to get confused and tried backing up my entire entire hard drive, even though I had just restored it and nothing had changed. This process went on for like six hours, and I was afraid to interrupt it. In the end, it failed, because the backup drive was too full. But it kept trying unsuccessfully to backup the whole thing, and I could not figure out a way to make it stop! Eventually, I had to reformat the backup drive and start over with a new backup, which took another eight hours.
I am going to buy a new computer in the next few months, because my current Mac is over five years old, but I will likely switch to Windows after 20 years of using a Mac at home. It saddens me a bit, and I know that my sync problem with Entourage/Outlook is probably mostly the fault of Microsoft. However, I must have compatibility with my system at work, and the simple fact is that is not possible on the Mac without jumping through hoops.
In addition, Apple presented Mavericks as a free upgrade in the App Store and promoted all of its alleged new features, but they did not list the things that had been removed (including the Sync Services functionality on which I depended). Given the widespread usage of Office for Mac, I would think it might have been good for them to reveal that broken functionality more prominently. Then, of course, there was the fiasco of trying to restore things back with Time Machine.
    Sigh....

  • How do I turn off Sync Services Agent?

I am trying to redownload my Office: mac 2011 to my Mac Book Pro. When I put in the Office: Mac 2011 disc it keeps telling me to quit the following applications-- Sync Services Agent. I have tried to "force quit" this app. but it continues to run. I need some help on this. Thanks!

    Hey everybody:
I have the solution to this problem.
I had installed Microsoft Office on my Mac at home recently, primarily to use Outlook on a day where I was working from home, and when I was done, I quit Outlook, but it was too late; the installation had left its residue. I got pop-up Windows which were related to Outlook telling me there were meetings, etc, so I wanted to find all running processes with "microsoft" somewhere in their path and to kill them off. These are the initial steps I took:
    Tue 10:14:15 {jsl@marlin:[~]} pwd
    /Users/jsl
    Tue 10:14:27 {jsl@marlin:[~]} ps -ef | egrep -i 'microsoft|PPID' | egrep -v egrep
UID   PID  PPID   C STIME   TTY           TIME CMD
      501  6036   313   0 10:11AM ??         0:00.49 /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/Office365Service.app/Contents/MacOS/Office365Service
      501  6038   313   0 10:11AM ??         0:00.65 /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/Microsoft Database Daemon.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Database Daemon
      501  6039   313   0 10:11AM ??         0:00.45 /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/SyncServicesAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/SyncServicesAgent
    Tue 10:14:49 {jsl@marlin:[~]} kill 6036 6038 6039
As you can see, I tried to kill off the 3 Microsoft-related processes, but when I went to double-check that I had actually gotten rid of them, I saw that 2 of them had come back:
    Tue 10:15:05 {jsl@marlin:[~]} ps -ef | egrep -i 'microsoft|PPID' | egrep -v egrep
UID   PID  PPID   C STIME   TTY           TIME CMD
      501  6104   313   0 10:15AM ??         0:00.38 /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/SyncServicesAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/SyncServicesAgent
      501  6105   313   0 10:15AM ??         0:00.26 /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/Microsoft Database Daemon.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Database Daemon
I kept trying to kill off various processes, but eventually I figured out that if I killed off every process except for the "SyncServicesAgent", I could at least keep the number of Microsoft-related processes to a minimum.  But the real question was how to kill off the SyncServicesAgent so that it would stay dead? I noticed that "kill -9" didn't work, because the prcoess was definitely dying, but something else was bringing it back to life, and that's what I needed to suss out.
Let me just cut to the end, so that you, too, can know what steps to take. You want to kill off all "microsoft" processes except for "SyncServicesAgent" using "kill" on the command-line (in Terminal), and then use "launchctl" for the last step, as below:
    Tue 10:30:44 {jsl@marlin:[~]} ps -ef | egrep -i 'microsoft|PPID' | egrep -v egrep
UID   PID  PPID   C STIME   TTY           TIME CMD
      501  6104   313   0 10:15AM ??         0:00.69 /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/SyncServicesAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/SyncServicesAgent
      501  6105   313   0 10:15AM ??         0:00.74 /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/Microsoft Database Daemon.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Database Daemon
      501  6158   313   0 10:30AM ??         0:00.41 /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/Office365Service.app/Contents/MacOS/Office365Service
    Tue 10:31:09 {jsl@marlin:[~]} kill 6105 6158
    Tue 10:31:24 {jsl@marlin:[~]} ps -ef | egrep -i 'microsoft|PPID' | egrep -v egrep
UID   PID  PPID   C STIME   TTY           TIME CMD
      501  6104   313   0 10:15AM ??         0:00.69 /Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Office/SyncServicesAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/SyncServicesAgent
    Tue 10:31:26 {jsl@marlin:[~]} launchctl list | wc -l
    244
    Tue 10:44:25 {jsl@marlin:[~]} launchctl list | egrep -i microsoft
    -          0          com.microsoft.SyncServicesAgent.74304
    6104          -          com.microsoft.SyncServicesAgent
    Tue 10:44:34 {jsl@marlin:[~]} launchctl remove com.microsoft.SyncServicesAgent
    Tue 10:45:02 {jsl@marlin:[~]} ps -ef | egrep -i 'microsoft|PPID' | egrep -v egrep
UID   PID  PPID   C STIME   TTY           TIME CMD
    Tue 10:45:22 {jsl@marlin:[~]}
Just to be clear, that last step -- and the step which everyone here is looking for -- is pretty much just
"launchctl remove com.microsoft.SyncServicesAgent", and the problem is taken care of. Cheers!

  • Sync problem on iPhone4 IOS5 and iTunes 10.5: Sync service failed to start

After painful upgrade to IOS 5.0 on my iPone 4 which suffer from er 3014 unt I do full restore in other computer. Now two new problems cropped up again:
    A.
When I sync IPhone with iTunes, the sync process started and freeze at "waing f sync service to start" and for 5 minutes or so, it end up with a dialog stated that the iPhone could not be synced because sync service failed to start
To remedy, I have to click t start Sync again, and thios time, it will be completed.
To solve tjhis, I have done the following, and the probelm still persist:
    a. Reinstal,l to repair iTunes
    b. Delete the Lockup folder
    c. Reset sync history
    d. reboot iPhone
All cannot solve the problem. Help please, how to solve this problem?
Also, when I backup my iPhone, it freeze at "Backing up iPhone" fr about 10-15 minutes, then start backup, until nearly finished, then it restart backup process again by itself, and again, freezing at "Backing up iPhone" for another 5 minutes, then it start backup and complete. I check the backup time in Preferences, it's correct.
To solve this, I delete the backup, and start new backup, the process went OK. But when I start backup again, the above symptom (backing up, and restart backup again to complete) persist
I have quite a rough experiences with iTunes-iPhone-iPad sync and backup all the times. Can the sync and backup process mad better and real trouble free Apple?
Help and suggestion please. I sync iPhone and iPad2 with WIndow XP PC. iPad2 do not have problem. The problem is with iPhone4 IOS 5 32 GB (less than 2 GB free space on iPhone remains)

I have very similar problems with my brand new iPhone and iTunes.  iTunes is virtually unusable even after multiple installs, uniinstalls, and reinstalls. Sync fails silently. Drop-down menus won't stay visible long enough to click any options.   Phone-support blames it on the fact that I use Windows XP however the iTunes page says right there: "iTunes 10.5 for Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7".  The only program I have problems with is iTunes.
He said I have to revert to iOS 4 but he also said he thought that was impossible.  What does the OS on my phone have to do with the behavior of iTunes running on my computer?  iTunes crashed and had failures both before and after I updated to iOS 5.  Typical bad tech support just like every other company.  I thought Apple was different. Apple really stepped in it this time and it stinks.  I've seen a huge number of new problem reports here and elsewhere.

  • Prevent device to reboot after IBW (fully unattended installation)

    Hi all,
I'm facing a problem with fully unattended installations. I'm installing the OS with an IBW USB drive. I configured it to be fully unanettended, but it reboots right after IBW, so it enters the installation process every time. Is there any way to avoid this
loop? I guess this could be set at Pass 2 (Offline Servicing), but I don't know how.
    Thank you so much.

I read one way could be to not Accept EULA at Setup, as described in this topic:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6150f2fe-b88a-4a0e-b384-8c4a15d2e798/unattended-installation-from-usb-and-reboot-during-installation?forum=quebecservicingdeployment
But I think it is not much "elegant". Isn't there any other way to solve this?

    Sync Services has been removed.
Microsoft will have to update Outlook to work with CalDAV and CardDAV to sync with Calendar and Contacts.

When I connect my iTouch to my PC (windows 7) an error message is displayed reading "iTunes was unable to load dataclass information from sync services. Reconnect or try again later". I have completely uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes. I have also completely reset my iTouch to factory defaults. I have even followed all the advice provided previously to other forum member with the same problem. Nothing seems to work. Please help me someone.

I'm getting the same problem with both my IPad 4 and iPhone 5
Just started a few weeks back, Since then I have had two Itunes updates.
Is this something Apple is aware of and trying to fix?

  • Unable to start User Profile Sync Service

    Hi,
I am currently facing some issues with starting the User Profile Sync Service on my SP2013 farm.. I was wondering if someone could help me out a bit.
I have successfully installed the SP2013 farm on a environment that has access to our AD etc. and I have also
restored the database from SP2007 and converted it to Claims authentication etc. The one thing I can’t get to work is to enable the User Profile Sync Service on the server. I have checked quite a bit of TechNet blogs and other sites and tried almost everything
suggested but it still fails. I’ve also recreated the farm from scratch yesterday again but no luck still
    L.
The below is what I have done:
Farm Admin account – spadmin2013 is local admin on all SP Farm servers (2 WFE and 2 APP Servers) and has log on locally rights as well on security policy. On the SQL DB it has dbo permissions on the Sync, Profile and Social DB’s.
Farm Service account – spservice-s is a managed farm account that is used to run the various services of the farm (used during the config wizard part).
From within the Admin Control Panel I have verified the managed accounts and it is indeed spadmin2013 which owns the User Profile Sync Service (not the application itself). When I try to start the service it tries to do that for 5-10 minutes and then fails
and goes back to stop and I do not see any error. I have created a custom service application with new database that runs on spadmin2013/spfarm/ldap accounts etc. I can see from the Windows services – FIM and FIMSync service try to start using the spadmin2013
and then go back to disabled. I have also tried giving the spadmin2013 rights to replicate the AD as few blogs suggested that. I am not sure where this is going wrong or what is missing. I had successfully got this to work and still can get it to work on my
first SP2013 server which is a standalone – running SQL, SP app and WFE on the same box.
In fact I also tried to activate this service first before I joined my 3 other servers to the farm and had no luck. I am kinda lost here as to what is going on!

Right. i ran a new log as suggested. I have also cleared the config cache and created a Powershell profile as suggested in this link - http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bryanbolling/archive/2014/01/02/unable-to-start-user-profile-synchronization-service.aspx
I checked the ULS Logs and i can see the below error -

  • When trying to sync my I Phone 4 to I tunes I am getting a message: Unable to Data class information from Sync Services. What does this mean?

When I-tunes is trying to sync my phone, I get a message regarding Data Class Information from Sync Services saying they were unable to do this.  I have no idea what this means.  I have not been having any problems with syncing info from my computer to phone until just now.  I am trying to install new alert tones from an app that I purchased.  The alert ones are now in my library on I-tunes and they play but they are not syncing to my phone.  The snycing options is not available in my library and when I try to manually sync these tones, nothing is happening.  I recently purhcased ringtones from the I-tunes store and from my phone and they downloaded with no problems and are synced onto my computer and are showing up in the same library list as the tone alerts which I cannot seem to sync.  I have no idea why this is.  Please help!

In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you worked through the following document?

  • Just updated to IOS 7 and two issues:  First when I connect my iPhone to my computer I get this error message:itunes was unable to provider data from sync services".

Just updated to IOS 7 and two issues:
First when I connect my iPhone to my computer I get this error message:itunes was unable to provider data from sync services".  I'm not sure what this really means...
The second issue is when I try to select "Manually Manage Music"
The iPhone "My iPhone" is synced with another iTunes libary on "MY-PC".  Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?  An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time.  Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."
So... I don't want to do that, but I do what to be able to Manage my music.  I'm not sure what it means by being synced to another iTunes unless it means to an older version of itunes?
    Anyone have any ideas?

I cannot address the sync services error right now, but the error that you receive when you change from sync to manually manage music is what happens when you change. Once you change to manually manage music, it erases all of the music and will only put the music that you want on the phone, content that you manually drag over to it.
