Unauthorized Phone Charges

Last month a charge of $15.25 appeared on my Verizon bill that had never been there before.  According to the bill, I was being invoiced on behalf of "Access Savings" for a "Voicemail Monthly Fee."  My Verizon statement indicated that this portion of my bill was provided as a service to Operator Assistance Network and that I should contact them directly with any questions.  I called the 800 number and was advised that the charge was for an 800 number, requested through an email received from an e-mail account of my son that has been invalid for over a year, when we switched from Comcast to Verizon.  Bottom line is that I told them to cancel the service and I paid my Verizon bill, minus the $15.25.
Have any of you had a similar experience?  I suspect this was a scam, so the message is that we need to read our monthly bills carefully.

I found a third party charge of $13.21 from ESBI on our current bill for a VOICEMAIL IDTHEFTMTHY service which we did not request; I have informed Verizon that I will not pay this charge.
There was also a third party charge of $15.25 from OAN on our March bill which I paid before I realized that we had not requested their VOICEMAILMNTHLY FEE service. I did call OAN and spoke to a very pleasant agent who gave me her employee number and a confirmation number for my request to discontinue this service.  There was no charge from OAN in April.
There a number of sites on the internet where hundreds (if not thousands) have complained about this sort of treatment from ESBI and OAN as well as several other dubious companies, but apparently no one is really going after these scam artists with any effectiveness. Contacting the BBB and the FTC with complaints is not generating much, if any, action.  I am not sure if the FCC has become involved in trying to resolve this serious problem.

    Most USB ports can't supply the power required to charge a phone.
    The original USB port was limited to 0.5 amps at 5 volts which is 2.5 watts.
    Your phone probably has a 10 watt charger.
    Recent machines allow more power from the USB port but I doubt they allow 2 amps which is what would be required to get 10 watts.  Even if they did a 2 amp draw is going to be a heavy load on the MBA battery.

    You are in recovery mode and need to restore in itunes on your computer.

    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

    I have the above Rapid Charging Stand and it is excellent but be aware that the PlayBook will not sit on this with a case. In that case you may wish to consider the Rapid Travel Charger available at a similar price. More bulky than the original charger but none the less a great product.

    Clean charging port with clean dry toothbrush. If something more than dust, dirt, debris is present, clean with toothbrush and a small amount (drop) of Isopropyll Alcohol. The pins are on top of the dock midrib.

    iMessage and FaceTime went down yesterday for some people. Mine is still down. My iMessage is saying the same thing about being activated. Sounds like you are still down too. Ignore the status page that says everything is fine - it lies.

    internet, email, sending/receiving pics, facebook, twitter, etc are using part of the basic 2 gig allowance for data.
    many folks use wi-fi at home/work/any place with wi-fi & that isn't using any of the data.

    if you would like some assistance from the forum with your conenction speed then please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) bt speedtester and post the results .
    are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
    Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
    Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem
