Unbearably slow personal hotspot!

using an iPhone 5S as a personal hotspot with an macbook pro 2013.
on the iphone its getting 30-40 M+ (fast) but on the mac its so 0-1M.
I have tried the suggestions, reset network settings. tried wifi/bluetooth/usb. all slow.
any suggestions/tricks anyone? tnx

Basic troubleshooting
Confirm that your iOS device, computer, and wireless plan all meet the system requirements for Personal Hotspot.
Verify that Personal Hotspot is enabled by tapping Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Verify the Internet connection on your iOS device by tapping Safari and loading a new webpage.
If one connection type doesn't work, try another (for example, instead of connecting using Wi-Fi, try using USB or Bluetooth).
Try disabling and reenabling Personal Hotspot from Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Install the latest version of iOS. Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
If none of the previous steps resolves your issue, restore the iPhone.
If none of these work, keep reading on the article I used -> support.apple.com/kb/ts2756

  • Very slow personal hotspot on iPhone but Internet speed great - why??

The Internet on my iPhone 5 is fast using 3G but when I connect my laptop using USB and enable the personal hotspot, the speed is extremely slow. It wasn't always this slow. How do I fix it or what is causing it to be slow on the laptop yet fine on the phone?
    Help please!

  • Very slow wirelesss when using iPhone 4S' personal hotspot for a MacBook Pro (MBP)...

    Hello.
Last night, I was helping a client with his old iPhone 4S' personal hotspot as shown in http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4517 web page. It uses Verizon Wireless 3G for his 4 GB data cellular connection. We got the wireless (WPA2) connection to work fine, but it was very slow like crappy dial-up modem speeds. Is this normal? iPhone's iOS v8.1.2's top screen says 1X (is this a speed number?) and left of MBP. Updated Mac OS X 10.8.5's top screen shows an infinite(?) symbol instead of that wifi arc symbol.
    Thank you in advance.

yes, 1x is a speed indicator, and it is very slow. Even with 3g speeds, hotspot will be pretty slow, but still ok for simple surfing and emails and such, streaming not so much. For hotspot, you really kinda want to have at least 4g, preferably LTE.
About that 1x speed, you may want to see if you get that everywhere or just in that location. Ideally, in a good coverage area, you should not be getting such slow speeds. Might have something to do with the building you are in though. If you get the same outdoors, and your coverage area is good, you may want to call in and have someone troubleshoot your signal.

  • My personal hotspot is much slower on my 4s

  • Iphone 5 personal hotspot slow connection to MBP

Hi guys, my personal hotspot connection has been running extremely slowl on my MBP circa 2q2010 model. It tethers fine and all and is recognised as connected but the download speeds are super low, I try loading webpages on BOTH the iphone 5 and the MBP and they both load slowly while connected to each other.
Here's the puzzling thing, when I disconnect the two, the iphone loads pages quickly and suffers no speed issues.
Then I tried connecting it to an ipad via Wifi and the iPad has excellent speed and so does the iPhone. I'm very puzzled by all this since it used to run fine before but it's been a few weeks since i connected via iPhone.
Normally when I connect I connect via USB, and turn off the MBP wifi connection, this time around, nothing works. Would appreciate some advise.
One more thing, I updated system software yesterday, I know it's tempting to blame it on the system upgrade, and it probably is the reason but i just wanted to check here first. The software update may also be unrelated.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • Make airport express 2g connect to iOS personal hotspot?

I am soon gonna use 3G internet connectivity as my primary connection type and I want to be able to connect my airport express 2g to my iphone 5's personal hotspot and extend it.
the reason i want this is cause i want to be able to stream airplay music from my mac and ipad to the router which wont be possible if i directly connect the devices to my iphone.
    any possibility?
    Neerav

infact... let me tell u what my AE is doing at the moment.
it is connected to my ISP's device which is on my building roof. this device is capable of hosting an IP pool. when i put my AE in bridge mode it tends to make my macbook connect directly to the ISP's device. the ip is the one that i get from the ISP. since my ISP's device allows upto 5 computers i can also connect my ipad and phone. i can use airplay this way but as soon as i loose internet connectivity and stop getting an ip from my isp's modem airplay stops, inspite of the fact that macbook is connected to the AE. this is obvious because now my device doesn't have an IP.
i dont know what DHCP only mode does.
RIght now i have it it DHCP and NAT mode. this lets the router have its own dhcp pool even while the device ahead of it capable of having a dhcp pool. it shows as a conflict in Airport utility but when i 'ignore' the problem i get a green  light and internet works fine. there is no pppoe over here. the pppoe is done my by ISP's modem wireleslly to the node wimax base station in my area.
by keeping in the dhcp and nat mode, it is supposed to be a bit slow, but, inturn it allows me to use my LAN based communication within devices and airplay without a glitch.

  • IOS Personal Hotspot issues via Wifi

Is there any way that I can get my Wifi-only iPad to ONLY link to my iPhone's personal hotspot, without my iPhone jumping to various unsecured (and often slow and unreliable) Wifi networks?
This has seriously got to be the single-most frustrating user experience for me with iOS. It's clunky, messy and terribly inconvenient.
It would be nice if I could turn off "external" Wifi and just use a dedicated "internal" Wifi connection that connects to my iPhone's 3G radio, but the iPhone's.
I live in Korea where where unsecured Wif networks are so ubiquitious, but 90% of the time, you can't use them. It becomes especially problematic if you're riding on a bus or subway and having your iPhone jump between various unsecured Wifi networks, and which renders your iPad totally useless, if you have no connection.
I've tried the bluetooth only connection, but man, iOS really makes you jump through hoops and screens just to switch between all these settings. Scott Forstall and his iOS team failed epically here. There is just no elegan

I have an iPhone 4s with the Hotspot turned on.  However, I could never see the wifi connection when using my laptop or iMac.  The key to get this to work is to go to the Settings screen, and tap on Personal Hotspot and tap the ON button.  Once you do this, Do not leave the Personal Hotspot screen!  Connect to your Hotspot within 90 seconds or before the iPhone goes to sleep.

  • Personal Hotspot driving me crazy wont stay connected!!!!!

I can not stay connected to personal hotspot for more then a minute or two and it keeps disconecting.  I have searched all over and seen other people with the same problem and no solutions.  Please someone help.  It was working and I was able to use it to stream and download things on my computer.  I was hoping to use personal hotspot also to update to iOS 5 as the wifi where I am is pain stackingly slow!  My phone is not going into sleep I have tried playing music in the background, playing games at the same time, and have had auto lock turned off.  I have left it on the personal hotspot screen also.  Nothing with work and its driving me nuts that I can not figure this out.  I have unlimited tethering set up and would like to watch netflix, hockey games and do my update.  Please someone help with this or at least just let me know there is no solution.

Does your Laptop loose wireless connection or it's just your Wii ?
Have you tried resetting your Wireless Router ?
If your Laptop is also loosing the Wireless Connection then problem will be with your router, else it could be Wii...

  • I am on verizon and ever since ios7,  cannot use the personal hotspot

On an iPhone 5, before iOS 7, I had no problem connecting to my iphones personal hotspot via WiFi.
Then t upgraded to iOS 7, and it would connect to the hotspot, but windows 7 would say limited or no connectivity. Note no changes were made to the windows 7 machine. My nexus 7 and kindle fire also had trouble connecting. They'd show being connected to the iPhone, but you'd either get no internet or very slow internet.
I then upgraded to a 5s. Same exact problem exists.
I've tried resetting the network settings on the iPhone without any luck. I've tried disabling and enabling the wireless adapter on the window's machine, and that did not work either.
I have verified that the iPhone itself does have LTE connectivity, and speed test showed a very fast connection, in fact.
I've seen posts about updating your APN settings, however I believe Verizon blocks you from being able to change the apn-theres no way to get to it from settings on the iPhone.
Any ideas? I'm sure there are a ton of Verizon ios7 users, and since this problem occurred on two different phones even, I'd have to think this is a widespread problem.

I have reset my phone a large number of times. It doesn't work. I am now reseting and setting it up as a new phone every 2 days. It works for a while and then teh cycle repeats.

  • IPad 2 WiFi + iPhone 4 Personal Hotspot

I'm noticing that with relatively high network speed and reliability; i'm frequently having SIGNIFICANT trouble downloading Apps in the App Store with my connection.  (My connection seems to suddnely slow way down whenever I connect to the App Store through my iphone 4's tether).
I have AT&T and I'm using hte official Personal Hotspot app in 4.3.2.  Websurfing and email are fine.  Magazines are "tolerable" but downloading apps?  Problem. Anyone else having this issue?  I've filed one customer complaint already with AT&T for the incredibly slow speeds I've been experiencing from the main location I have to use the 3G Data (my office, which normally has had very good data throughput rates).  I'm consistently clocking 0.17/down and 1.5 up; which seems very lopsided.

Before accessing the App store; Speedest.net (app) shows 0.57-1.2 down which is perfect.  As long as I stay out of the appstore; i seem to be fine.  The SECOND i try to download an app in the appstore; the connection slows to a crawl and apps end up taking more than 10 minutes to install or they lock up and don't install.  Speedtests after a failed appstore downloading will then consistently drop to 0.17 down/1.2 up.  This is baffling and has happened enough times I'm wondering if AppStore downloads are "throttled" when used on HotSpot Connections.
I'm wondering if a separate 3g iPad would perform better than a tethered one.

  • IPhone 5 personal hotspot with MBP has extremely low speed

    I have MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and iPhone 5s iOS 8.2
I have the same issue as iphone 5 personal hotspot slow connection to MBP, but articles didn't help me.
When i use internet on my phone (Cellular 3g) i usually have connection speed in range 1.5 - 4.5 mbps (on download).
When i turn on hot spot and connect with mac in any way (usb/wifi/bluetooth) connection speed (on both, phone and mac) become very low - in range 0.03 - 0.11 mbps.
    Please, help me.

UPD: i have just tested hot spot with iPhone and Samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0 and had the same problem.

  • IPad won't connect to personal hotspot

I have an iPhone 4S that I use as a personal hotspot for my iPad when I'm away from home. My bf has an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1 that will automatically connect to my personal hotspot without me having to do anything with my 4S. My iPad however requires that I unlock my 4S, go to the personal hotspot settings page and then it'll connect. I'm trying to figure out why the iPhone 4 connects to the personal hotspot automatically when the iPad won't. Both connect via wifi. Bluetooth is too slow with the personal hotspot, so I just don't use it.

I was having the same issue. I starting searching and found a few people who suggested turning up the brightness on your iPad. I thought what in the world would that have to do with connection to my hotspot but I tried I and it worked. My brightness was set to about 50% and I uped it to around 75% and it worked. Try it anyway. Hope it will work for you as well .........

  • AirPlay via Personal hotspot set up by iphone4

I have set up a Personal hotspot by using iPhone4 and use iPad to stream Pictures/Videos/Music to Apple TV   -   Works really fine!
However, trying to stream pictures from the very iPhone to AirPlay seems not to work-any ideas about that?

Same problem here. Using AirPlay streaming from an iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, and iPad 2 all result in very slow buffering on even short (30sec) videos. Takes a long while to buffer enough to start video play, and in the middle it pauses because the buffer ran out.
Same AppleTV streams OK from internet sources (eg. Netflix) even on my slow 5Mbps DSL connection. Using AirPort Extreme. Again, streams fine from internet sources.
Expect the device-to-device AirPlay performance to be much better.

  • Turn off Personal Hotspot?

Is there anyways to turn this off? I really need to know, it's taking up all of the wifi at my house and making things run very slow.

The personal hotspot presumably originates on some device like an iPhone.
You can turn it off there -- wherever it originates.
