UNBELIEVABLE ADDRESS BOOK label printing still archaic

Unreal. Address book label printing is a joke. So they still have not looked at the several phonecalls with suggestions i left with techsupport in regards to the fact that you CANNOT change the position of the label you want an address printed on, therefore wasting a whole avery sheet for just one label everytime you print. What a way to save the environment Apple. Think different.

Yes, this is incredibly silly. Drives me nuts everytime I want to print a label, so I do it in Word. Dumb.

  • Address Book label printing incorrect

I am getting spouse & child details printing on some address labels in one group and on all labels in another group. These fields are not supposed to be there at all.
'(Title, first name, surname) and (spouse/child fields)'
What can be done to correct this?
    I'm using Avery A4 J8157 stock.

Hi All, it's Christmas time again and I'm having the same problem - random family additions to the contact name, and it didn't happen last year. My ugly work-around is to invoke the Maiden Name field and cut and paste all the family contacts into there. At least the names don't get forgotten and it sorts out the label problem.
Like others, the fact that Apple doesn't have the decency to acknowledge a problem so we all know where we are, makes me seethe. Who are we anyway? Just a bunch of idiot customers? I'll send an email to Steve Jobs, but the chances of a reply are those of a snowball in Hades.

  • Another Address Book label question

Is there a way in the address book label printing to select the position of one label to be printed on, let's say, a 30 label sheet of Avery standard? Many times I just want to print one address label but have a sheet of labels that have several labels missing. I want to be able to select the start position as to where the label is printed, otherwise it always wants to print in the first row, first label and I have to use a brand new sheet of label paper so use up the 2 #1 postions. (Turn it upside down)
    Thanks,
    Glen

    Hello:
Unfortunately Address Book only prints a contact name or a company name on a label. Hopefully this will change in a future version.

  • Cannot print from Address Book! Print freezes and will not proceed.

I want to print an address list for Christmas cards. When I select the Group, select all and select Print I get the option box. I then select my printer and use the down arrow to open the dialog box that shows I am printing from Address Book and gives the different forms I can use (ie list, label, envelope) as well as the fields to include in the list. Once I have everything selected I click the Print radio button. All of the information under the Address Book options line disappears. Print remains highlighted and my printer Que never opens or appears. If I manually open the printer there is no print job showing. At this point the Address Book application is frozen. I cannot select cancel on the print dialog box (I can click it, but it does not highlight and it does not close the dialog box! In order to get out of this situation I have had to close Address Book. The quit option on the menu does work and Force Quit is unnecessary.
I actually spoke with AppleCare on this issue on Friday 05 Dec 2008. The tech I spoke with knew of no other such situations, but when I started checking on this discussion page I see a posting from REECO from clear back on 24 Sept 2008. His posting can be found at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8161605&tstart=0
The technician had me do several things. One was to pull my Caches folder out of my system Library folder. He also had me remove some Address Book preference items. The end result of these actions was a Mac Pro that would not boot! (The failure followed an Address Book crash with a "KERPROTECTIONFAILURE" and the message that some QualityMedia plugin might have created the problem!)(I could find no such plug in either on my system or via Google search!) The tech had asked me to boot to safe mode by booting while holding down the shift key untill the spinning gear appeared. The machine never progressed to a successful boot! I ended up having to use a 2nd hard drive and physically place it in internal slot 1 on my Mac Pro proceeding to reinstall Tiger! The bad news is that this did NOT solve my printing problem.
If I am attempting to print from a new install with just the Apple address card and the Owner's card in Address book the print proceeds fine. Once I import my data I am back to the same print failure.
Some diagnostic steps I have tried. I have tried USB local printers and bonjour printers. I have used Epson and Canon printers. I have tried to print to a PDF. I have tried printing from another computer (12 inch PowerBook) with identical results!
At this point I am going to call AppleCare Monday morning and see if anyone there has any more suggestions. Any suggestions this forum has will be received gratefully!

I was having the same crash or "just not print" problem as seen in other posts. I was able to fix it however, by making changes in some of the address cards I was going to print. By editing the "parent", "child", "spouse" fields which will get added to the name line of the label, I was able to get labels to print (or pdf preview) without difficulty.
I did not try and determine exactly what the problem was, but basically did a data cleanup. Since I didn't know that those fields would print, I had previously included information beyond just a name in the fields, like birthdates and such, eg. "Jimmy - 12/1/05". After either removing the fields entirely where I didn't really need them, or just cleaning them down to names only, they printed just fine. I'd considered trying to disable the feature entirely but the data cleanup was not hard for a dozen or so names.

  • Address book - labels layout - other formats

    Hello Forum
Does anyone know of a collection of other layouts for the address book label layouts. At the moment I only see Avery std, Avery A4 and DYMO.
There's a whole set of labels of other label makers eg DECAdry that I don't find in the list. Nor do I know of (or find) a site that maps DECAdry on Avery equivalents.
I can of course simply add it as custom layout but I was wondering if there were other alternatives?

  • Address book will print 'famil' but not 'family'??

I use Address Book to send out Christmas cards to our clients. When I print out the envelope I would like it to say for example 'Bill Jones and family', but I do not want 'and family' to show in the address book window, so I cannot use the suffix field. When I type 'famil' in the 'father' template field it prints as 'Bill Jones and famil', however when I type 'family' it ignores the field and will print as Bill Jones only. This goes for daughter, spouse, brother, etc. I have tried adding a space before or after 'family' but there is no fooling Address Book. Any ideas?

BTW Address Book will print fomily, fimily and famili, just not family in the spouse/parent field. This is the weirdest thing I have ever seen! It makes no difference if I use capitals, and it will print family as a name or an address.

  • Address Book Labels

Anyone know why it is that having imported all my contacts from Palm Desktop, address book labels all the email addresses as either "work", "home", or "other"?
Surely "email" would be more appropriate...
And can I do anything about it, other than manually change all 375 contacts?
    Thanks,
    Mark

  • How do I use Address Book to print multiple labels using just one address?

Hi. I'm trying to print multiple address labels using the same address on each label, but I'm stuck trying to make this happen in Address Book. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

The work-around that I've found to solve this issue is to create a new group in address book, then duplicate the contact 20 times or so, and drag the duplicates to the group you've created. Then, when you go to print, you will have a sheet of 20 or so duplicate labels. If you want to save it to repeat this task later, you can select "save as PDF" in the print menu, and simply print the PDF file next time. (assuming you use the same size labels next time, of course) Then, don't forget to delete the umteen duplicates from address book, taking care not to delete the original.
Not the perfect solution, but it gets the job done. Maybe somebody wants to make an automator action that will do this?

  • How to Export from Numbers 09 to Address Book or print mailing labels?

I need to know how to export contact information that is part of a Numbers sheet to Address Book and to be able to print mailing labels. I do not have to print from Address Book but do need to produce address labels. I've tried a number of things from the help menus in Numbers 09, Address Book, Word and Excel for MAC 2011. I probably just don't have a grasp fo what I'm supposed to do. Thanks much!

    nushuz,
I can sympathize if you're having trouble following the directions. Address Book will reject what looks like a perfectly good CSV file if it doesn't like the data it finds inside.
Here's what I have found to be the best way to create a CSV from Numbers for Address Book import...
Drag an Address Book contact to a Blank Sheet in Numbers. That's a Sheet in which you have deleted the default table.
This will give you a properly formatted table for conversion to CSV, and you just have to add all your contact data to the table you just created. Before you begin though, it's a good idea to Unhide all Hidden Columns, and there are probably many. Hover over any Column Label and click the menu triangle, selecting "Unhide All Columns", or words to that effect.
After you have all your data situated in the table, Share > Export > CSV and then Import to Address Book.

  • Using address book to print mailing labels

    Hi all
I am trying to print mailing labels using the addresses in my address book. In the past, I had a PC and was able to put in a title such as "The Smith Family" and it would be simply applied to all labels by exporting only the last name and of course the address. How do I do this using address book?
Thanks so much for your tips.

Here's a way to get somewhat similar behavior. Hopefully you can adjust it to get the best result.
1 - Select a card that you want to print
2 - Choose the Card > Add Field > Related Names menu item. If that menu item is grayed out, you can just press the Edit button
3 - Find the related names fields in the card. They have default labels of "friend" and "assistant". Click on one of the labels and change it to "spouse"
4 - In the field for the spouse label, type "Family" for example
5 - Press Edit to close the editor and save the card, then print
Now the envelope or label will be addressed "Bill Gates and Family".

  • Address Book envelope printing weirdness

I'm having a strange problem when trying to print envelopes or mailing labels from Address Book. Basically, when I select a contact use cmd-P to print the address, the preview in the LH side of the Print dialog looks fine. But if I print, or use the "Preview" button, exclamation points are added before and after the State field.
So, "New York NY 12345" becomes "NewYork!NY!12345" in Preview or in the printed output.
If I print to PDF and copy the offending text to a Hex Editor, it appears that the sequence "E2 80 8E" is added just before the spaces (0x20) that separate the fields.
The same addresses synced on another Mac look fine and print fine.
Needless to say, it's driving me nuts! Any ideas?

    Hi Waldo,
    Just a suggestion...
Have you tried using Disk Utility to Verify and Repair Permissions?
It sure won't hurt anything even if it doesn't fix your problem.

  • Address Book Label Layout

I'm using mail to print address labels. Several addressees are couples with different last names. If I list one of the couple as a spouse or partner in my address book, the program will list both names on the first line of the label. However, it's inconsistent, doing it with some couples entries and not others. I don't see any difference in the individual entries to explain the different layout. Has anybody had this experience?

I found the solution in the "spouse" thread. Thomas Corper said," Select "print", then go to "LABEL" tab. Once in there, change "addresses:all" to your distribution list. It gets rid of all the other names you have and just includes the title name."

  • Adress book label printing

a simple question...... how do i print labels with both the company name and contact name. currently only the contact name is printing. thanks

I logged on to Apple forums this morning to find a solution to this very problem!
I then found this thread and initially thought, "that's great! Someone else has had the same problem and there are responses listed on how to fix."
I'm so disappointed. Apple has failed on this one because it looks like no one has a solution (other than NOT using Address Book to store professional contacts in the hopes of ever using it to correspond via US mail).
Apple should have got this correct in the first place. But secondly, why wouldn't Apple give the end user the power to customize which data fields we want to print on the Avery labels? Strike two Apple.
You design Address Book, then give us iWork to produce professional documents and spreadsheets putting the power of design and templates into the hands of individuals and small business owners. Then you give us no possible way to mail our creations to an individual at a company with a professional mailing label?
Boo to you Apple for missing this boat on what is a simple concept.

  • ADDRESS BOOK: Envelopes print "assistants", "Spouse" &c

I entered some names in "friend", "assistant" &c, in Address Book and these are being added to the main name when I print envelopes. How can I stop the programme doing this? Do I have to remove all the extra names?

Huh! I had never noticed this, but I have the same problem ... on some contacts only. There doesn't seem to be a lot of logic to this: some contacts with "spouse" entries print out with first names separated by "and" plus last name, or with both full names separated by "and" if the last names are different ... but some don't. Weirder still, it doesn't seem to matter if each spouse has an individual listing or not. Plus, in some cases where each spouse has an individual "card" printing both results in one addressed to both & the other just to that person.
    I don't get it!
