Unclear to me: difference between Instance - Publication ?

Hi experts
I'm rather new to BusinessObjects. I have Edge BO XI 3.1 SP3 installed.
After reading the manual, its not completely clear to me what the difference is between a schedule and a publication. When I go to properties of lets say a WebI report, I see 2 places where I could Schedule the report: 1 under Default settings, the other under Schedule... 2 times I can choose Recurrence... Whats that all about?
I've read about instances and publications. I know publications are objects that schedule 1 or more objects. I create them by right clicking a folder > new > publication... I get that.
I don't completely understand the instances part... Are they maintained in the history tab? Are they objects of their own somewhere ??
Please providme me with some missing Info.

Your description of a situation where instances are used is a good one.
I would just add an issue that you might experience. If you select as behaviour to see the last instance generated, keep in mind that reports which don't have any instance generated will not open by double clicking on them in Infoview. You will have to right click on them and select view report. This is by design.
History is the best place to see the list of generated instances.
As administrator, in the CMC, you have a very nice tool called instance manager that enables you to see the status of all your instances. You can filter them by date, by status, ... so very useful when you arrive at the office in the morning and want to check if the instances of last night were generated correctly.
Keep in mind that scheduling is not only generating instance but you can also send reports (in pdf or excel format) by email or copy them to a shared folder.
So use scheduling if you have recurring tasks like sending a specific report every morning, for instance.

and that will be called as a global variable...

Difference between Instance Crash and Database Crash in Standalone and RAC?

Literally, database crash means that the database itself is damaged in some way. A disk is no more. Data files are corrupted. Etc. The database itself thus causes the crash - and a database crash will also cause all database instances (RAC or single) for that database to crash too.
An instance crash will therefore mean that the crash occurs in the instance due to an Oracle bug or similar. In other words a s/w error and not a database error. The database is still "fine", but the instance not. Instance crashes. However, any other instance on that same (RAC) database will still be fine as the database itself is unaffected by that s/w error in the crashed instance.
If you mean something different, please enlighten us. Not all crashes are equal. {noformat};-){noformat}

What is the difference between instance variable and class variable?

i've looked it up on a few pages and i'm still struggling a bit maybe one of you guys could "dumb" it down for me or give and example of how their uses differ.

Instance is variable, class is an object.What? "Instance" doesn't necessarily refer to variables, and although it's true that instances of Class are objects, it's not clear if that's what you meant, or how it's relevant.

Static fields, methods, and classes are not necessarily object types. One can have a static primitive field.

Difference between config tool and offlinecfgeditor?

I am having a strong confusion between these two. Please help.
Both require the DB to be up.
Both requires a restart after a change, that means none of them makes the change in DB directly.
What is the difference then?
What I think that configtool directly doesn't make a any change at DB level at all, it only changes the instance.properties file at OS level only, whereas offlinecfgeditor changes the values of the parameters at DB level.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
One more doubt:
What is the difference between instance.properties and instance.properties.vmprop?
I know second gets created every time with the restart of the DB. Does that mean it's a copy of DB stored parameters?
Is there a way in JAVA stack by which we can bring the parameters at OS level and DB level in sync, like we do in ABAP in RZ10 by importing the profiles?

Hi,
Basically the configtool and offlinecfgeditor are the same thing, the configtool is more user friendly, but the offlinecfgeditor can be used to access certain files and configurations that the configtool doesn't have access to.
Any changes done in the configtool are made at a database level, the instances.properties only gets changed after the bootstrap process which involves pulling data from the DB, This is the reason the j2ee needs a restart after ant changes are done to DB by configtools as these core DB files (note just the ones that change the instance.properties) are only accessed during the bootstrap phase, (a start up phase). This is to avoid any inconsistencies.
The instance.properties.vmprop just contains information about the jdk in use and other simialar information (used for logs), it will only get created if it does not exist already, hence why it is recommended to delete this file after upgrading the jdk.
The instance.properties contains important paramters used during the start up of the j2ee system.
The java stack only syncs OS and DB parameters during start up time (bootstrap).

Differences between Oracle SID / Instance/ Listener / Service or Service_Na

Hi guys, i am confuse about the following terms above and how they relate to one another when connecting to a database..
This is what i know
- SID is the identifier of an Oracle Instance.
- An Oracle Instance is a group of programs and memory allocated for accessing the database.
- A database is a group of data files, control files etc.
- A database can be accessed by different instances at the same time.
- A instance can only access 1 database at a time.
From what i know, this are my questions below
1) An instance can only access 1 database(9i) at a time, but does that mean an instance can also access another database of different version(10g) at another time ? If it is possible, what parameter file should i look into ?
2) Can i run two or more instances in the same computer if each instance is assign to access different database of the same version or different version?
3) let say i have 2 instance each accessing a database of its own, how many listener do i need ?
4) when i look into tnsnames.ora, some of the connect_data contains SID, whereas some only contains service_name.
Can I know what is Service_Name ?

i look into ?No it is not possible, the instance is associated to only one database. The oracle instance is created based on the rdbms installed version, and the rdbms version (including patchset) should match the database version, otherwise, the operation dba should perform is the upgrade process.

version?Yes, you can first have as much installed RDBMS as your computer can have, obviously each rdbms installed on different Oracle Homes (restriction started since 8.1.5), and you can start as many instances as the host is able to handle depending on the resources and kernel parameter the host is configured with.

database of its own, how many listener do i need ?The minimum number of listeners is 1, this is enough to handle all connections, if you are planning to setup more than two listeneres, it is up to you, each listener must have its own port and you should beware of the self-instance registration issues at the default 1521 port.

service_name.

Using services is the way to configure tns connect alias starting from 8i. A service is a way to refer to an instance. Administering by means of services is a helpful topic when administering RAC environments. You can declare certain instances to belong to a service and other to another service name, this way you can better distribuite workloads during peak hours and off time, you can better schedule tasks and avoid bottlenecks by redirecting jobs to specific services and using features such as resource manager.

what is the difference between Central instance and Application instance.

Basically these terms comes when you are working on live servers where all the users log into to do their daily work.
We says when we want to distribute the workload on servers we requires central instance and application servers.
Normally it is not known to common users where they are logging into...but they can login directly usign the specific Instance details of servers.

why we need to start RAC instances with SRVCTL command, what is the difference between sqlplus -- startup and (srvctl start instance -d dbname -i inst_name)

The first ever thing that comes to mind is that sql*plus is not a clusterware utility which means, any updations done from it, may not update correctly the OCR . If you would play with RAC, you may see that doing the startup/shutdown using the sql*plus at times show a conflict the status of the instance when checked through crs_stat command. That's a reason that the srvctl is preferred against sql*plus in the cluster environments.

but what is the difference between these two?
both i declare them above the constructor right.
and both can access by any method in the class but my teacher said
global variables are not permitted in java....

instance variables are kindof like Global variables. I'm not surprised you are confused.
The difference is not in how they are declared, but rather in how they are used.
There are two different "styles" of programming
- procedural programming.
- object oriented programming.
Global variables are a term from Procedural programming.
In this style of programming, you have only one class, and one "main" procedure. You only create one instance of the class, and then "run" it.
There is one thread of control, which goes through various methods/procedures to accomplish your task.
In this style of programming instance variables ARE "global" variables. They are accessible to all methods. There is only one instance of the class, and thus only one instance of the variables.
Global variables are "bad" BECAUSE you can change them in any method you like. Even from places that shouldn't have to. Also if you use the same name as a global variable and a local variable, you can cause great trouble. This can lead to very subtle bugs, as the procedures interact in ways you don't expect.
The preferred method in procedural programming is to pass the values as parameters to the methods, and only refer to the parameters, and local variables. This means that you can track exactly what your method is doing, and what it affects. It makes it simpler to understand. If you use global variables in your methods, it becomes harder to understand.
So when are instance variables not global variables?
When you are actually using the class as an Object, rather than just a program to run. If you are creating multiple instances of an object, all with different values for their instance variables, then they are not global variables. For instance you declare a Person object with an attribute "firstname". Your "main" program then creates many instances of the Person object, each with their own "firstname"
I guess at the end of all this, it comes down to definitions.
Certainly you can write procedural code in java. You can treat your instance variables, for all intents and purposes like global variables.

Well, a mere description of the views in the official documentation isn't going to actually help you very much more than you could do with a simple "desc V$instance/desc V$thread", I suspect.
The answer I think you might be looking for is that a thread is not the same thing as an instance. In fact, we usually talk about "a thread of redo", which gets much closer to the issue here. Yes, it is true that one instance can only generate one 'thread of redo', so one instance = one thread, and there's a temptation to extrapolate from that and assume they're the same thing.
But they're not. An instance is a set of memory structures and processes. It has a name. It gets started and stopped. In can be running in various states (nomount, mount, open, read-only, primary, secondary etc).
A thread of redo is a history of redo generated by an instance. It has ever-incrementing checkpoint change numbers, times of last checkpoints, sequence numbers, blocks of redo that are forever being flushed to different parts of the current redo log. And so on.
Thus, V$INSTANCE tells you the state of the instance and V$THREAD tells you all you could ever want to know about where you're up to in the writing-redo stakes.

You can use this parameter to define the number of enqueue work processes for the instance.
Ensure that a value >0 is only set on the central instance that provides the enqueue server (instance rdisp/enqname ). One enqueue work process on the central instance is normally sufficient (rdisp/wp_no_enq = 1); only in very large systems can a higher value be useful.
