Uncompressed FW 800 editing with a hitch

I feel like I've achieved the impossible, and I'm a bit confused. Over a year ago I upgraded my system with a new G5 (dual 2ghz) PCIe computer, a Decklink Extreme card, and what I believed to be a G-Raid 500Gb drive w/ fw 800. Some of this ancillary gear was recommended to me by professional associates, and I thought I was putting the package together correctly.
Within the past year I have worked on several (not all) projects in the BMD Uncompressed 8-bit codec (many others have been DV25). I've input Beta SP, DVCPRO 50, output all of the same. Created shows with graphic complexity. And been successful, aesthetically and technically.
Over a month ago the G-Tech drive crapped out on me and had to be sent into G-Tech for emergency repair. What a drag! But the clincher is - it turns out I had purchased a G-Drive, not a G-RAID. I had not given a single thought in all that time.
So now I'm thinking, should I never try this again and go straight to a new G-Raid? Or go back and do it all over again with the restored G-drive? G-Tech says it's unlikely that my inadvertent use of the drive would have made it go down so soon.
Thanks for any thoughts.
Mac G5 dual 2 Ghz 2gig ram   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Decklink Extreme PCIe card

Most of the newer hardware raided firewire 800 drives (like the G-Raid 2 and LaCie options) have performance issues when you daisy chain them. Performace goes from 65MB/s down to 16MB/s. This happened to me and a few others. And only with the newer drives, not the older ones. Older units used PATA drives, newer ones use SATA drives. But it is the controller inside the drive that is the issue. HOWEVER...the CalDigit Firewire VR doesn't have this issue. You can daisy chain those with no performance loss. And not everyone has had the same issues with the LaCies or G-Raid 2s. Seems intermittent.

  • G5  AND HD EDITING WITH FCP

I'm considering buying one of the G5s - the 2.3 model with 250gb HD. I already have FCP3 and would have to upgrade it. So far I've found iDVD to be useful together with Toast6 working on a G4 800 Dual with two 80gb HDs, one for main OS and the other for storage of FCP3 edited material, but....
How easy will it be, if possible anyway, to edit the new HD camera produced stuff with the G5 2.3 model? I'm mainly using a Canon XM2 at the moment and appreciate that a camera change will be necessary for my future requirements.
    All contributions gratefully received.
    Ron.

I suggest waiting too, right now dual cores are going into consumer level Mac's, so Quads Intels should become the norm for Mac Towers very shortly. Possibly with a eight core come early next year.
Software is still up in the air, third party PCI cards haven't even been made because the new Mac Pro Towers haven't even been announced.
I haven't seen much in the way of PCI-Express options either.
As you know rendering takes time, the more CPU's you have the better, and although you could go now, it's not the best move at this time.
Hopefully we will see faster Mac Pro's with more X-Grid use by Apple software, we could build our own clusters. This would be a tremendous hardware advantage over Windoze PC's now that the processors are the same in each platform.
FCP renders could be automatically split up and delegated to networked cluster Macs via XGrid. HD is very disk/CPU intensive, large files too.
As some have noticed, the PPC Quad sports two Ethernet connections.
BlueRay drives are coming, it's a whole new industry of HD video disks.
Yep, waiting until the dust settles and Rev 2 with eight cores might be the wise choice.

  • Questions about editing with io HD or Kona 3 cards

My production company is switching from Avid to Final Cut Pro. I have a few editing system questions (not ingesting and outputting, just questions about systems for the actual editors - we will have mac pros with either kona 3 or io HD for ingest and outputs)
    1) Our editors work from home so they most likely will be using MacBook Pros - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6GHz 4GB computers with eSata drives to work on uncompressed HD, will they be able to work more quickly in FCP if they are using the new Mac Pro 8-Core (2 Quad-Core 2.8GHz Intel Xeon) or will the mac book pro's be able to hold their own with editing hour long documentaries, uncompressed HD
    2) Will having an AJA Kona 3 (if we get the editors mac pros) or io HD (for the mac book pros) connected be a significant help to the editor's and their process, will it speed up their work, will it allow them to edit sequences without having to render clips of different formats? Or will they be just as well off without editing with the io HD?
I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the necessity of the AJA hardware in terms of working with the editors to help them do what they have to do with projects that have been shot on many formats- DVCPro tapes, Aiptek cameras that create QTs and P2 footage.
    Thanks

    1. with the IoHD, laptops become OK working with ProRes and simply eSata setups. Without the Io, they can't view externally on a video monitor (a must in my book). It will not speed up rendering a ton, nor will it save renders of mixed formats. The idea is to get all source footage to ProRes with the Io, and then the Io also lifts the CPU from having to convert ProRes to something you can monitor externally on a video monitor, and record back to any tape format you want... all in real time.
    2. Kona 3's on Towers would run circles around render times on a Laptop... no matter what the codec, but the Kona does not really speed renders up. That's a function of the CPU and just how fast is it. (lots of CPU's at faster speeds will speed up render times).
I'd recommend you capture to ProRes with Io's or the Kona 3 and don't work in uncompressed HD. You gain nothing doing it quality wise at all. And you only use up a ton of disk space (6 times the size in fact) capturing and working in uncompressed HD, which from your post, you're not shooting anyway. The lovely thing about ProRes is that it's visually lossless, efficient, and speeds up the editing process. Mixing formats can be done, but it's better to go to ProRes for all source footage, and edit that way.
With either the Kona or the Io, you then can output to uncompressed HD tape... that's what they do for you no matter what codec you've edited in. ProRes is designed to be the codec of choice for all HD projects when you're shooting different formats especially... Get them all singing the same tune in your editing stations, and you'll be a much happier camper. Only reason to buy laptops is portability... otherwise you're much better off with towers and the Kona 3 speed wise.

  • G5 Power PC vs Imac...which is better for editing with final cut studio 2?

    This is my present computer:
    iMac 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (2008 model)
4 gigs of 800 mhz ddr2 sdram (this is the max ram for this computer! )
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
Hard drive: 465 gig (I use mainly external drives for editing)
I use this mainly for video editing with final cut studio 2.
    Rendering in compressor takes forever!!!
A friend suggested I pick up a used G5 Power PC.
I found this one, here are the specs:
APPLE POWER MAC G5 PowerPC DUAL CORE (2 x 2 GHZ)
    System Mac OSX 10.5.8
    RAM 12 GB
1 Hard drive of 160 Gb
    Superdrive 16x CD/DVD/DL DVD (32x)
Video card NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (VRAM 256 Mb)
    3 open PCI-Express expansion slots.
    1x FireWire 800
    3x FireWire 400
    4x USB 1 and 2
    2x Ethernet Port
    2x Displays ports
Is this insanity or a smart move to move over to the older G5.
According to my friend, the older G5s are much better at processing video.
Is a dual 2 GHZ processor enough or would I need a 2.3 or 2.5?
OR is there another option that someone might be able to suggest?
I would be so appreciative of any opinions regarding this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    Bill

Save your pennies and look for a refurbished or used MacPro. Early 2008 or newer 8 core machines w/8GB of RAM running 4 instances in QMaster will chew through material.
Beyond running compressor, it is just a better all round machine for editing video.
    • it has multiple internal drive bays which run via SATA connections - much faster than the FW800 limits of the iMac for external drives
    • it has 3 slots which give you the option of an i/o card from AJA, Blackmagic or Matrox so that you can actually monitor your video properly as well as ingest high end formats
    • the slots give you the ability to connect esata raids for even higher data speeds
    • you have much greater flexibility with computer monitors
    • you have much greater RAM capacity
    and so on ...

  • Slow Performance when 800 edits applied....

I have a close friend that told me today that he's applied 800 edits to a single photo and now it takes about 3 minutes to perform any additional edits. He's using a current model 17" MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM. What can be done to accelerate performance in this situation?
    Thanks,
    Robert

Stop me if you've heard this one before...
A man goes to a doctor and says "Doctor, it hurts when I move my arm like this."
The doctor says: "Then stop moving your arm like that."
Most of my images just have a small handful of tweaks. I can count them on my fingers. I have had some edits where I wanted to touch up skin (e.g. diminish scars, etc.) and those required quite a few more edits. I can envision needing several dozen edits in some severe cases. But that's about it.
If the number of edits on a single image can't be expressed as a 1 or 2 digit number, this should be a red flag that there is likely a better approach.
You have to ask yourself if you really need those 800 edits? ALL of them? REALLY??
If you share a bit about what sorts of edits your friend is performing, we might suggest an alternate approach which, not only would eliminate the performance problems, it would likely save your friend a LOT of time. Some types of edits are much better handled outside Aperture or by using a plug-in.
Earlier I mentioned the use of edits to touch up skin (diminish or eliminate scarring, etc..) If someone were to have poor skin that would require extensive editing, there are plug-ins that can create clear-skin with a lot less work (e.g. Portraiture 2 by Imagenomic does this.)
At this point, we don't have enough information to be able to suggest an alternative, so I just gave one example. Keep in mind that the way Aperture functions -- in order to do non-destructive RAW workflow, Aperture doesn't ever apply an edit to an image directly. It loads the un-altered image, then reads the (very) long list of adjustments and applies them "on the fly" to result in the finished look. 800 "on the fly" edits keeps Aperture very busy. So the performance is COMPLETELY to be expected -- no surprise there. You can "flatten" the edits by telling Aperture to create a new "version" (it'll save a copy of the image with all edits applied.) which will massively improve performance (and set the Aperture preferences to create a stack whenever you create new versions -- it's in the Aperture -> Preferences panel.)
Even still, 800 is well beyond the norm and I'm thinking there's probably an easier way to achieve the desired effect.

  • Multi Camera Editing with Matrox CODEC ( VS4 ) Card

    Hello All.
    Setup
I am recording 4 inputs from the Matrox VS4 via Wirecast 4.2 and also tried 5.0
    - 1080i @ 100Mbps
    - All the video footage play perfectly with no problems what so ever
    - I Have installed the Matrox VFW Software Codecs of a system which DOES NOT have the VS4 card
    - I can edit 1 video with NO PROBLEM.
    Problem
    - Using Adobe Premiere 7.1 CC with multi camera editing, the footage is jittery after a few seconds.
    - Using Adobe Premiere CS 6.0 with multi camera editing, the footage is jittery after a few seconds.
    - I have tried with 2 cameras up to 4 cameras and I get the same problem.#
    Other Test
    - I have tried 12 x videos which are MP4 in multi camera editing with NO PROBLEMS!!!
    - I am using 4 x 128GB SSD in RAID 0 ( 1450 MB/s) - Through put is not an issue.
    - I have also reduced the MB/s on the ISO capture of 50MB/s
This is the CODEC you need to have installed on your computer in order to edit the view/edit the videos recorded by the Matrox VS4:
    http://www.matrox.com/video/en/support/windows/vfw_software_codecs/downloads/softwares/ver sion1.0/
The Matrox Video for Windows (VFW) software codecs let you render and play back Matrox .avi files in your VFW programs without having Matrox video hardware installed. This version provides codecs that were previously available only on systems that have particular Matrox video hardware, such as Matrox Axio. This includes the Matrox DVCPRO HD codec, and "+ Alpha" versions of the Matrox uncompressed and MPEG-2 I-frame codecs. As well, the Matrox VFW MPEG-2 I-frame HD codec now lets you render and play back Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame .avi files in all HD formats (720p, 1440x1080i/p, and full-size 1080i/p).
The following VFW software codecs are provided for use on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems:
    Matrox DV/DVCAM
    Matrox DVCPRO
    Matrox DVCPRO50
    Matrox DVCPRO HD
Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame in SD and HD resolutions, with or without alpha
Matrox Uncompressed in SD and HD resolutions, with or without alpha
    Matrox Offline HD
Matrox M-JPEG and HDV (playback only)
Is this an issue that is present the Premier 7.1 CC or the CODEC or even both?
    Thank you all.

  • Dropped frames on MultiCam editing with Canon XF305 Footage

    Hello,
I recently purchased three Canon XF305 series cameras and have been conducting a series of tests to determine the best recording format and editing workflow. First, does anyone have experience with these new Canon cameras?
Using the log and transfer utility, I've been bringing the files into FCP natively using the canon codec (which is actually mislabeled as a Sony codec). Once in, the footage looks good to edit, without requiring rendering.
However, when I setup a multiclip sequence with the three cameras, the render bar turns green and I'm getting all kinds of dropped frames on playback. Is this a computer processor issue, drive speed, or codec? The multiclip is the only time I have trouble -- once I collapse the multiclip, I can edit fine without any drop frames.
I've done tests using 5400x and 7200x drives using both firewire 800 and eSata, no changes. I believe that rules out drive speed.
Is this a processor issue? What can I do to resolve this, as our workflow involves 100+ hours of footage from 3 cameras.
    Thanks in advance

but my experience with the 305's in ProRes is that it makes it a bigger file(more than double)
Of course it will. XDCAM is a highly compressed format. ProRes is a larger file type, higher data rate. It will be larger. Did you not notice that the ProRes footage from the 5D were also about 5 times larger?
    and still needs to render.
If you worked in a ProRes timeline, then you shouldn't need to render. If you still do, than something is wrong. Create the file...make a new sequence, cut this into that sequence...FCP will make the settings match. If it does this, and you STILL need to render....you did something wrong.
when I actually converted to ProRes, it seemed like it was more taxing on the computer, took up twice the hard drive, and more than three times the time to transcode compared to native.
It is less taxing to actually edit with. GOP formats require the computer to constantly process the GOP footage to show you frames...since there are no real frames in any GOP format. Well, there are 3 frames every second, then a bunch of pictures, and the computer has to guess what is next by looking at the frames, and then the pictures, and make up the in-between. PRORES is a full frame format...no guessing, no computing. And larger files are not more taxing on the computer...they might require faster hard drives...and larger ones, but they are less taxing. Yes, longer to convert than native, but when that is done, things are easier.
But, do what you want. I just gave a suggestion.

  • Laptop monitor choice for photo editing with lightroom and photoshop

    Hi,
i'm going to buy a laptop, mostly for photo editing with lightroom and photoshop use.
I'm in trouble with the display choice.
One laptop has LG LP156WF4 or AUO B156HAN01 display, that should be very similar matte ips display with 55%-60% coverage of AdobeRGB. You can find a review in the "Display" section of these link : http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Clevo-W650SJ-Schenker-M504-Barebones-Notebook.114329.0 .html
The other laptop hasAU Optronics B156HW01 V.4 Matte 95%, that is a TN matte display with  95% coverage of AdobeRGB. You can find a review in these link (the display should be the green bar): http://www.anandtech.com/show/4649/mythlogic-pollux-1400-clevos-w150hr-tested/6
My question is: which one is better for photo editing with photoshop and lightroom?
Someone says that ips is better because of the fidelity of color reproduction, view angles and contrast.
Someone, on the other side, says that the TN 95% is better because of the gamut%.
    Can you help me?
    Thanks,
    Marco Grechi

Macbook pro is out of budget
Hp assistance said that in italy they don't sell laptop with dreamcolor (i'll call again tomorrow to be sure ) but i think that it would be out of budget (max 2000 euro).
They said that the best solution for me is the zbook 15 g2 (2300 euro), but they DON'T know brand and model of the display and if i can have SSD + HD inside the zbook 15 g2.
The laptop with the lg panel costs 1500 euro. the question is; "i know that the lg display is not the best, but is it almost sufficient for my use?". In this way i may save 500/800 to buy a separated display later.
I have read that dell xps 15 and dell precision m3800 have great display, but they are glossy and very reflective. Is it a big handicap?
    Do you know the 3k 15,6" display Panasonic VVX16T020G00 ? It should be a 8-bit display with 72%NTSC gamut ( http://www.panelook.com/VVX16T020G00_Panasonic_15.5_LCM_parameter_22014.html )
Do you sugget me a 3k display for photo editing?
    Thanks

  • Computer CONSTANTLY restarts while editing with premiere and after effects

Whenever i edit in premiere or after effects, my computer will always just randomly restart.  It normally does it more in after effects than premiere, but lately, it has been doing it a lot in premiere, sometimes as much as every 15 minutes.    Here are my specs:

  • Re: JB3- Editing with Cool Edit

    Okay,
This is for people with a JB3. I am using the editing software Cool Edit '96. I am wondering if any of you use this software for editing purposes? I use it when I dump my 'line recording' from a concert that allows taping to edit it so I can burn it on a CD without long pauses etc... I am wondering if anyone who uses this or a like editing software how can I assign a track number to a song track? Basically the 'line recording' is one continuous recording so with editing I splice up that recording into individual tracks but don't know how you can assign a track number?
    Thanks whoever has done this!

    Hello
I am about to start my third 3D animation edit.
I am currently rendering an animation using Maya that will be rendered to image sequences. Each shot will contain up to 100s of images that will be strung together to make "reference movies". Each shot will have one reference movie. We use reference movies in order to preserve the original frames.
I need to edit these 1280x720 movies in Final Cut. We've done this before by directly editing with the reference movies, but it was sloooooow. We were just pushing too much data through our RAID, and the renders were excruciating.
This time, I'd like to render each reference movie to an HDV file that I can edit easily with. Then, I can edit the video, add sound, transitions/effects, and have a clean finished product for client review.
But then I need to export an uncompressed version using the source frames.
    Here's the question:
Is there a good way to plan my project so that I can easily replace my HDV clips with the reference movie clips all at once (without re-linking them one at a time)? If that's possible, then I could edit quickly, and then replace footage and go through just one FCP render in order to get a clean, uncompressed version.
Sorry for the convoluted question. I appreciate all responses.

  • Editing with Photoshop Elements 4.0

I'm sure the problem and solution are simple, but I'm missing something. Here goes.
I'm using iPhoto 6.0.2. Just installed and started using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0. Have been editing about 1,100 photos from a recent trip to Africa, which were imported from my Canon. Wanted more editing tools, so stopped editing with iPhoto and started using PS Elements. So I open a photo from the iPhoto library using PS Elements. Let's say I open a photo from Roll 100, and call it the Monkey Photo. I edit the Monkey Photo in PS Elements, and then save (not save as, but save, using the same Monkey Photo file name). It saves the photo, but not back into Roll 100, but into a new Roll created somehow by the operating system, let's call it Roll 110, found in both the Originals and Modified folders (which seems odd).
Just like importing directly into iPhoto, when I save from PS Elements, a thumbnail is created, called a Preview. So now I have two thumbnails/previews, one from the original photo and one from the PS edited version.
So now I go to the Africa album in iPhoto. I double click on the thumbnail on the main screen to open Monkey Photo and I see a big gray blob with a large exclamation point in the middle. I go to the iPhoto library folders, and see that Monkey Photo is no longer in Roll 100, but now in Roll 110. But somehow iPhoto is not recognizing Monkey Photo in Roll 110 (and it's no longer in Roll 100, so as far as iPhoto is concerned, it doesn't exist...but it does).
So back to iPhoto. I click on View and switch to Roll view. Now I see Roll 100 and Roll 110. I click on Monkey Photo thumbnail in Roll 100, big gray blob, but click on Monkey Photo preview in Roll 110, and now I see Monkey Photo, in all his/her wonderfully edited colors from PS Elements.
How do I get the thumbnail in the iPhoto Library and the Africa album to work to recognize that Monkey Photo is now in a new roll? I did the rebuild stuff (control-option on opening iPhoto, click on first three choices, wait 30 minutes....nothing happened). I noticed the ColorSync profile was missing, and reinstalled it. Still the big gray blob following thumbnail clicking. I did a war dance. Still nothing.
What am I missing here? If you tell me that I have to recreate the Library, then the next noise you hear will be iPhoto disc being used as a frisbee and smashing into the neighbor's window.

    Robert:L
Are you accessing that file from the Finder to open in PSE or are you using iPhoto's preferences to use PSE when you double click a thumbnail? The latter is the way it should be done. Then as long as you do not create a layered or otherwise edited file that required the psd extension nor change the file name, iPhoto will recognize the edit update the thumbnail accordingly. If you access those files from the Finder, open in PSE, edit and save, the thumbnail will not be updated but when you go to the edit mode you'll see the edits.
Go to iPhoto's preferences and under the General section select PSE under the Open photo with: menu.

  • Anyone using ms sqlserver standard edition with XI 3.0

wondering if anyone is successfully using ms sqlserver standard edition (not enterprise edition) with XI 3.0. I would like to set up a dev/test XI system and the standard sqlserver edition is less expensive than enterprise edition. I would like to confirm that it works ok first.
    thanks-

    Henry,
I haven't tried but I think it will be successful with mssql server standard edition also. The following link gives the key difference between standard and enterprise edition.

  • To install Remote Desktop Services User CAL on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP1

    Dear Sir,
Presently we have installed Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition with SP 1. And now i would like to install Remote Desktop Services User CAL on this server. I have 25 digit product key of Windows Server
2008 R2 Remote Desktop Services User CAL (20). Downloaded this product key from our MSDN Subscriptions.
Kindly suggest me how to install (CAL server with product key that i have) and configure remote desktop services on my above existing server also how to point other server with my CAL server.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    1. Install Remote Desktop Session Host and Remote Desktop Licensing Role Services using Server Manager.
    2. Open RD Licensing Manager (licmgr.exe), Activate your server, then install your license
    3. In RD Session Host Configuration (tsconfig.msc), set the Licensing mode to Per User and Specify your RD Licensing server name (itself).  If you want you may configure these two settings via group policy setting instead.  The path of the
group policy settings is Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Licensing
    4. You may point other RDSH servers to your RD Licensing server using RD Session Host Configuration or via group policy as mentioned above.
    5. Optionally you may consider installing other Remote Desktop Role Services such as RD Gateway, RD Web Access, RD Connection Broker, etc.

  • Where can I find an adapter that will let me use my firewire 800 devices with a thunderbolt only ported macbook air?

Been looking for a way to use my firewire 800 devices with my macbook air - which has only usb and thunderbolt ports.  I've seen internet pages for an adapter from sonnet but have not found anywhere to actually purchase such a thing.  Would love to be able to at least try to use the thunderbolt port - for something - or trade the thing in for something with present day usable firewire 800 ports.  Is this thunderbolt technology already getting shelved?  I see like 5 items on the market that actually use this port...  really?  That's it?   Thank you for any guidance!

  • Unable to edit document using "Edit with Word" option

    Hi All,
i am having an issue with Office web apps. i am using SharePoint 2013 and Office web apps 2013. all the configurations have been done successfully. but i have a different kind of issue.
i am able to open documents in browser
i am able to edit document using " edit with word/excel web" option
but i am unable to edit document using "edit with word/excel" option
i have Office 2010 installed on my local machine.
do we need to have MS office of 2013 version? or is there anything missing from configuration part.
    Please help me.
    Thank You,
    Bhaskar.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you could not use the "edit with word/excel" option.
I had tested the issue with the Office 2010, the option worked well.
You don’t need to install the Office 2013 to use this option.
What did you mean “but i am unable to edit document using "edit with word/excel" option
Did you mean the option gray out? Did the issue occur in other browsers?
You can use compatibility mode to check whether it works.
    Open IE->Tools->Compatibility View Settings
You can also add the site into Trusted sites.
Open the IE->Internet Options->Security->Sites->add the site into the Websites, then check whether it works.
What's more, you can also use other browsers to check whether it works, such as Firefox, Chrome.
    Thanks & Regards,
