Under Parental Controls

Please help. I just purchased a new iMac and I was trying to set up the parental controls. There is a section where you can give access to only certain emails. I added a few but need to delete some and I have looked everywhere for a delete or edit option and I can't get rid of them. There is nothing in the small handbook we were given. I am sure it is something right under my nose, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm a bit confused but I'll give it a try.
When you add an allowed contact and check "add person to my address book", That adds the contact information to your (the administrator) addressbook. That contact may already exist in your addressbook. To edit or modify that information you open your Addressbook application. The two functions are seperate.
You can add allowed email addresses in Parental controls without adding that person to your addressbook or you can select an existing contact in Your addressbook.

• How come when I block one website under parental controls, other websites become blocked?

I am a teacher and have found it necessary to block facebook. I am doing this under Parental Controls. Unfortunately, my students also frequent an Adobe website, I have discovered that by blocking facebook this site and others are not accessible. I then went and removed the block in Parental Controls and the Adobe site was still not accessible. I discovered that ONLY BY clicking on ALLOW UNRESTRICTED ACCESS TO WEBSITES were my students once again able to access the Adobe site.
Here is URL for the Adobe site: https://color.adobe.com/create/color-wheel/

When I use my own login, all of the sites work just fine.

Hey Nana1048,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing connectivity issues with your iPad 2. The following resource may help to resolve your issue:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
1. Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
2. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
3. Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
4. Restart your iOS device.
5. Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
6. Tap and Forget this Network.
7. Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
8. Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
9. Update your device to the latest version of software.
10. Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
Wi-Fi disconnects or signal strength is less than expected
1. Move closer to the Wi-Fi router (access point).
2. Check for sources of potential interference.
3. Remove any case, stand, or other accessories from your iOS device and see if signal strength improves.
4. Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including
- previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
- recently used Bluetooth accessories
- VPN and APN settings
Thanks,

• Controlling email under parental controls for network accounts

I use OS X server (10.8) to mange kids accounts at home, so they can logon to laptop or desktop and all there stuff is there.
This works perfectly as does the profile server ensuring that they have their parental controls set.
I've just stated to look at creating an email account for the older one and found that whilst there is a great 'People' tab in the Systems Preferences parental controls this doesn't seem to exist in profile manger at all.
Does anyone kniow how to setup 'safe' lists of people for inbound and outbound email using profile manager or directory admin ?
Thanks in advance

But does anyone know the default Parental Controls Settings, specifically under the Other tab?
you can find them out yourself. make a new account and enable parental controls on it. then expand "other" and see what's checked and what's not checked.

• Connecting to Http Proxy on Lion under parental controls

Hello.
Ive been looking for a couple of days for a fix for this. The issue im having is running parental controls on an account (any settings enabled/disabled, even with no web access permissions) and using a proxy (http, https, ftp) to connect to the internet. Connected as a standard/administrator user I can connect to the internet fine, but as soon as parental controls are enabled i cannot. I can't even connect to a local address without an error in the browser.
I have tried this on multiple lion computers with the same outcome.
The error im getting is:
Chrome: is no data received, no server data was sent.Error 324
Firefox is the default connection was reset error
And safari dosen't even give an error just a white screen.
And external programs don't seem to work.
The computer is 100% uptodate.

Parental controls use an internal proxy which ignores the proxy set in Network Preference. By making the internal proxy non-executable to the user with parental controls request can be passed to the external proxy.
You can run the following command from Apple Remote Desktop as root (or locally with sudo).
chmod a-x /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/FamilyControls.framework/Versions/A/Resources/webfilterctl
Note: This also works in 10.8 which has the same problem.

• Parental Controls Broken After Updating an Application

I'm using Parental Controls (remotely) under 10.5.4 to manage what applications can be opened in a small lab. This works well until I need to update an application on the lab computers. I'll use Firefox as an example, but this happens with all applications.
- I have a version of Firefox on all lab computers (3.0) and Firefox is allowed under parental controls. Everything works.
- I update Firefox to 3.0.1. (In this case, I simply overwrote the older version of firefox, but I get this problem when updating applications with installers.)
- If I remotely look at the Parental Controls settings for the lab computer, I can see that Firefox is still allowed (checked)
- Now, on the lab computer, I log into the managed account and try to open Firefox, I get a warning about the application not being on the allowed list.
- I log out of the lab computer, and again, access the parental controls setting remotely. Now Firefox is Not Allowed (unchecked).
- I check the box to allow Firefox
- Now when I log into the managed account, the new version of Firefox opens.
Some fixex / workarounds I have tried:
- After updating Firefox, I remotely accessed the parental controls settings and first disallowed (unchecked) Firefox, close parental controls, reopened it, and then allowed (checked) Firefox. When logged into the managed account, opening Firefox produced the not allowed error. When I return to the Parental Controls settings, Firefox is now Not Allowed (unchecked). Checking the box to allow Firefox fix the error.
- I've tried restarting after updating Firefox and it did not work.
My guess:
I assume that Leopard keeps a list of applications and versions installed on the computer. Parental Controls allows a specific combination and any update will break the parental controls. To allow this updated application to be opened, its old entry in the list must be updated to reflect the new version. The only way I have figured out how to do this, is to try and open the updated application and fail. Then I can finally allow the updated version.
Does anyone know of an automated or scritable way to do this. I have tried working with lsregister, but have not had any success. I need a way to force Leopard to reload / refresh its list of installed applications, with having a user logged into the console.
For a different solution, does if you can send a UNIX command to machine sitting on it login screen, that will cause the machine to login as a local console user. I could then send "open /path/to/updated app" and a logout to force the application list to be refreshed.
Many Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi! Did you ever receive any feedback on this issue?
I am interested since I have noticed the exact same frustration with Parental Controls since updating to 10.5.
While a very good idea, I think the parental controls, especially with respect to permissions about applications is utterly useless at the moment. It is completely stupid that I have to reset the permissions for applications each and every time I update an application. I have three children who use the computer and I don't want them using every bit of software on the eMac. They are naturally curious and will click on programs that can do damage without realizing is.
I have also turned off any parental controls regarding web browsing but my children still hit many sites that are blocked by Parental Controls. I do have a linux gateway that does the filtering quicker and better.
If anyone at Apple is listening ... please spend some time to fix this for the next update.
Thank you.

• Default Parental Controls blocks FaceBook

I just updated my family G4 iMac to Leopard.
On the kids' accounts, under Parental Controls -> Content, I chose the "Try to limit access to adult websites automatically"
My older son logged in and hollered that he could not get to his FaceBook page.
How interesting.
Way to go, Apple.

HI,
"Try to limit access to adult websites automatically"
In Parental Controls click the Customize button. You can setup certain sites for "allow" or "deny" ...

• Think parental controls have been installed on Mac book pro

Hello,
Does anyone know how to check if parental controls have been installed on my Mac. I have a lot of issues going to certain websites and my safari was having issues loading. Plus I had weird files on my disk that would set to different numbers. I'm not a child and believe someone linked my laptop. Please help remove controls.

Privateperson87,
to check if any user is under parental controls, log in as your administrative user and open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. It will show your users on the left-hand side of the window, and whether those users are administrative, “standard” (i.e. non-administrative), or “managed” (i.e. under parental controls).

• Accessing third party programs for managed accounts w/parental controls

Hello - I am trying to set up a managed account for a child. I have installed some third party software. When I attempt to allow access under parental controls to this software, while I can see it under the parental control screen (eg, using System Preferences), when this account is actually accessed, the program does not appear.
I've had many problems in the past with parental controls, and would appreciate any sources, tutorials, etc on the matter!

A post in the link FromOZ provided held the answer.
Currently there seems to be an issue with Profile Manager and Admin account etc. According to the other thread so long as you use, user profiles the problem exists. One user in the other thread put forth that they stoped using user profiles and were using device profiles. Which seemed to fix the issue. I can confim removing all user profiles and only using device profile solves the issue.
What I did was create a group just for each user place all there devices into that group and never touch the individual user profile again.
Maybe this will help someone I dont know but maybe. Its a bit of a pain in the rear but now I have dictation fixed. Heres hoping the next verison of Server fixes this.
ps.. This was a perliminary test of just a few things like VPN, WIFI, and a few settings. I dont expect it to change once, I get more indepth.

• Parental Controls on WRT1900AC

Hooked this up and love the speed boost at home. Question is: every review said there was an option to set time frames and time limits on devices under Parental Controls. This was one of my main reasons for getting it. Unfortunately it looks like there is just an on/off switch. Am I missing something? If not will this be coming in an update?? If not can you please add it to your list?!
Thanks!

To set time frames and time limits on devices under Parental Controls, you need to access your Linksys Smart Wifi Account then click and enable Parental Control. After that, select the device that you want to restrict access from the Restrict Internet access on list and click "Specific Times". Here's how to do that: http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=25627

• Parental controls supporting programs

I am trying to setup DrRacket, an introductory programming IDE - http://racket-lang.org, to run under an account with parental controls. It crashes whenever I try to run under parental controls; runs fine on my account. The DrRacket.app invokes a bin/drracket program to run. How can setup this program to run correctly? Searching the web, I've seen screenshots with a checkbox that allows supporing programs to run but I think it must be for an older version of Mac OS X.

I'm not up to speed with the new settings yet. In Leopard, some things have changed regarding how programmes are recorded in 'mcx_settings' (where the "Parental Controls" settings are stored) so this may no longer apply, but in the past, it was impossible to "approve" certain applications if the developer did not include a unique 'CFBundleIdentifier' property in the programme's "Info.plist" file. This affected the ability to enter the app into the permanent list, but I don't know if this is the case for approving "on-the-fly", which is a new feature in Leopard. If "WineHelper" is a Mac app (as opposed to an X11 app), perhaps that is the problem, in which case it might be possible to edit or add the property yourself.
To view the 'mcx_settings', try:

dscl . -read /users/username mcx_settings

When the system denies the launch of an application, it appears to be logged in "/private/var/log/system.log" so that might give you a hint to what programme might be causing the problem.

• Can't access google calendar with parental controls on

We are trying to give our daughter accesss to the family's Google calendar. In the parental controls we have "try to limit adult websites" as the selection. With this on, she is not able to log into the calendar - it gives a message that says something about not being able to establish a secure connection. She can go on the Google homepage without problem and search, etc. - but she can't access the Google sign-in or the calendar.
When we change the parental controls setting to "allow all websites" she can log onto the calendar without any problem.
We also tried adding the various google web address strings under the "customize" tab for "always allow these sites" while still leaving the "try to limit adult websites" as the overall setting. Even with the specific sites approved - she still can't access the calendar.
What's up?? Isn't there a way we can allow her to see the calendar without having to give her unecessary exposure to anything on the net?

So after I made my original post above I continued searching the forums and found the answer below. It refers to Googla Mail but their solution worked just as well for Google Calendar. Who knew it would be so simple. I just went into "always allow these sites" and put in the 1e100.net and it worked like a champ! The adult sites are still screened out but she can now access Google without any issue.

Re: Why can't I access Gmail anymore when internet restrictions are in plac
Apr 10, 2010 1:52 PM (in response to atobteam)
Finally!!!!! This solution works! Yea! There are two scenarios I know of: 1. If you have users for whom under "Parental Controls/Content" you've chosen "Allow access only to these websites" (they can only get to the websites that are bookmarked by you) and if Google Mail was already a bookmark, then just do this: click the plus sign below the list in "Parental Controls/Content/Allow access only to these websites", and choose "Add Bookmark." On the pop-up, name the site "goog" or anything you want; then type in: 1e100.net in the box asking for an address. This will produce a new bookmark (named "goog" or whatever you've chosen), but will in effect just be a dummy or slave bookmark that you'll never use, but it'll allow you to get to your user's google mail sign in page by hitting the old google mail bookmark he or she used to hit. Second scenario (I have both scenarios in my home): if you have users for whom under "Parental Controls/Content" you've chosen "Try to Limit Access to Adult Websites Automatically", click the "Customize" button and then on the top of the pop-up, under "Always Allow These Websites," click the plus button and then add: 1e100.net . Then click OK. This user will now be able to get to his or her google mail sign in page.

• E3000 parental controlled laptops require router reboot

I have an E3000 router connecting 4 laptops wirelessly. They are all the same model and OS machines, Dell Latitude E6510 with Windows 7 Pro.
I have 2 of the computers under parental control to disable the internet each night.
In the morning after the time to re-enable internet to the two controlled computers, they still won't connect
until I reboot the router.
I tried rebooting the machines instead.
I have to re-boot the router every day since we started last week to re-enable their internet access.
I called support who checked out my router settings through a remote connection and they said the settings are correct.
Call if it happens again.
Any help is appreciated,
Dan

I have found that if either of the restricted computers are left on through/during the time reset boundry, that we have this problem. Once I made sure the computers were shut down (not just in sleep or hibernate) then the restoration to access works.
Maybe this is normal?

• Can I get back bookmarks that disappeared after parental controls were added?

I made a misstake. I was testing out parental controls and it prompted me to create an administrator account and put my account under parental controls. When I did that and applied restrictions to my account i set it so that only accepted sites (ones allowed by the administerator and in the bookmarks bar) could be visit.
After a few days I went back and deled the administrator and got rid of parental controls but now all my bookmarks and folders are gone.
Is there a way I can get all my bookmarks back?
(I don't have a time machine hooked up, but I am running OSX 10.7 Lion)

Sorry for the confusion, but I had account 1 (which is my account) when I initiated parental controls it asked me to create an adminsitrator account, so I created account 2 (a new adminstrator account). When a deleted the adminstrator acccunt (account 2) thus deactivating the aparental controls, all the bookmarks that were hidden during parental controls were now gone. So I was just curious if they were deleted or if somehow I can find the file that contains all my bookmarks (maybe it's just hidden). Thanks!

• EA6300 Parental Controls device multiple time

I have parental controls on my EA6300 with the latest firmware. A device is listed multiple times under parental controls with different settings for each listing. I have rebooted with no luck.
Is there anyway to remove the multiple listed devices?
Thanks.
Ed...

If the device is listed as "Network Device" than the router might not be able to get the devices hostname. In which case compare the MAC address of the device to confirm which device it is and use DHCP reservation to reserve an IP Address and name for the device.
