Undergrad Students: Co-Op position available using LabVIEW

To Whom It May Concern:
It is good to see the recent posts about LabVIEW jobs, and we have a Co-
Op position available using LabVIEW. I recently posted a similar message
to the info-LabVIEW mailing list, and someone there recommended I also
post to comp.lang.labview.
Along those lines, we have a Co-Op position available that involves a
substantial amount of LabVIEW programming. We are looking for a EE or
computer engineering student (we aren't locked into those majors, but
they are typical of previous students), to begin work in the term
starting in January 2001.
About the Co-Op position:
This is a cooperative education position, where students typically
alternate terms of school with terms of work experience, usually for
three terms of each. Sometimes students co-op for less than three terms,
but we prefer to have someone who can commit to three terms. Thus they
get a four year degree in five years, including one year (total) of work
experience.
In my previous post to the info-LabVIEW list I received a great deal of
interest from international students, but our co-op program is such that
we are only considering students who already reside in the USA. Also, if
non-resident, you must be approved for work for a year or less in the
USA.
About the work:
Mostly LabVIEW programming, 50%-75% of the time, on custom software used
to control our in-house measurement systems. This is on Macs and PC's,
and involves GPIB and DAQ programming. The remaining time will be spent
on number crunching/data analysis.
About the company:
Corning Cable Systems (formerly Siecor) is a subsidiary of Corning, Inc.,
and is a major manufacturer of fiber optical cable. The Co-Op position is
in the Research, Development, and Engineering division, located in
Hickory, NC. Hickory is in central NC, about one hour north of Charlotte
and one and one- half hours east of Asheville. Hickory is also the home
of our corporate headquarters and two of our manufacturing plants. We
also have manufacturing plants in Texas, Canada, Mexico, PR, and in
Europe.
RD&E develops new cable designs to meet customer requirements, and tests
these cables under various physical and environmental conditions to see
that they meet or exceed industry standards before putting these designs
into production. The majority of our RD&E test and control software is
written in-house using LabVIEW.

  • Labview 7.1 crashes windows XP when using VI's saved with the 'Save for Previous Version' option available in Labview 8

I am trying to work with a series of vi's developed in Labview 8 in Labview 7.1.  The code was saved with the 'Save for Previous Version' option available in Labview 8.  When trying to use the code in LV7.1 my entire Windows XP system locks up (cursor freezes).  Are there any ideas what's going on and how to fix this?
    Thanks for your help!
    Mike

I have seen some problems with the save for previous option in the past. Instead of saving the entire hierarchy, try seperating the code into several different pieces and saving each piece individually. Then, see if you can open the different pieces in 7.1.
If that doesn't help, you should post some more details, like when exactly does it lock up, does it have things like DLL calls, and maybe attach the code.

  • Intesnisty and Position input analyzed using Labview

I have a motorized actuator which I want to first move using labview and also get feedback on its position using a DAQ card (NI-PCI-MIO-16E-1). I have a lock in amplifier which basically gives me voltage information through a GPIB card that I have. Now I need to implement a VI which can simultaneously do the following:
    1) move the motor in steps.
    2) get position feedback from the motor
    3) get data from the Lock in amplifier
    4) Plot a graph of position on the X and Voltage intensity on the Y
Advice, suggestions, comments or questions ?

How are you controlling the motor? Are you using a motion card? If you're not using a motion card, what hardware do you have and how is it all set up? Position feedback can be obtained from the DAQ card and the voltage information can be obtained from the GPIB card pretty easily. The examples found in the example finder are great places to start in order to get those two aspects down. If you can get those acquired, plotting them is also pretty easy and there are examples on that as well. Your main challenge will be with the motor so any additional information would help.

  • Face recognition using labview

I, am into my final year project. I am  doing face recognition using labview. I want to know how to compare image using labview. it would be  great if someone helped , as it is proving to be a major obstacle in my way

    Hi Sibom,
There are various face recognizing algorithms available. If your purpose is simple face recognition, then the simplest method would be to segment the image using a line, and to perform the recognition for every tilt of the image.Tthus when the line traces 180 degrees, all possible positions would have been verified.
If you like a more holistic approach you can have a look at the trace transform model and the active appearance model, which are used in the industry.
These models can be studied at :

  • Triggering a camera using LabView

    Hey,
I have a device that I'm moving using two servos. I'm controlling the motion using LabView. I want to capture the images of the device using MotionPro X3 high-speed camera (To track the position etc). So I need to synchronize the camera trigger and the motion using LabView. The software that comes with the camera (Motion Pro Studio) has the ability to allow the camera to be triggered using an external source. So I generated an analog signal using labview, and I connected a BNC cable from the analog output on the DAQ board to the camera. The camera needs at least 3V so it gets triggered, so I created a point-slider in labview, to increase the voltage from 0V to at least 3V.  I got this part to work.
So now I'm trying to combine the camera control code with the motion control code. In the motion control VI, when I hit "Run" the device starts to move, but data (Position, forces etc) is only saved when I hit "Save Data". What I want to do is to trigger the camera when I hit "Save Data", and not when I run the program. Is there a way to increase the voltage from 0 to 3V when I hit the "Save Data" switch?
Thanks in advance. I appreciate it if you could help me as soon as possible. This is driving me crazy.

    Hi FirasOSU
If possible, please post what kind of software you have available to work with and the specific hardware. The information I am posting is assuming you are working with one of our data acquisition boards which work with our NI-DAQmx driver.
There are several ways you can trigger the camera from a DAQ board depending on the model. I would recommend that you refer to the following knowledge base/white paper regarding tips and techniques for triggering with a data acquisition board and NI-DAQmx VIs
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/4329/en/
Here you will find information regarding options for triggering with our data acquisition boards using LabVIEW and sample code you can use to add triggering functionality to your code.
Also depending on your camera ports and if you have access to our vision tools that can be added to LabVIEW (Vision Development Module), then you can use the following example code to trigger your camera acquisition.

  • Using LabVIEW for temperature control with AMREL SPS200-50-A022 power supply

Hi, I hope someone can help me out. I'm an ME undergrad with pretty much no knowledge of LabVIEW. I am working a project which requires a temperature controller. Previously, we were using an SPS120-10 power supply from AMREL and a grad student wrote a LabVIEW VI which performed feedback temperature control. The VI would acquire temperature from a Benchlink which acquire the temperature from a thermocouple. The VI also monitor the output voltage & current and determine the power output and heater resistance from those values. When a desired temperature is set, the VI compares the actual temperature to the set temperature and adjust the voltage/current setting to achieve the desired temperature. The VI was designed to keep temperature deviation to within +/-0.5 deg C. I'm not sure of the data refresh rate, but it's on the order of seconds since the system has a small thermal mass and we're operating in the 800+ deg C range. When we were using the SPS120-10, the device used GPIB for communication with the PC. Due to higher power output demand for the heater, we switched to an SPS200-50, which only has an RS-232 port. First of all, I was wondering if someone could help me modify the VI so that it could communicate with the SPS200-50 through the serial port? In addition, the drivers for the SPS120-10 and SPS200-50 might be different. If modifying the VI to communicate through the serial port isn't enough, I would need to figure out where to modify the VI with the SPS200-50 drivers, which is provided by AMREL. If anyone would like, I can send you the VI files so that you can take a look at the block diagram and tell me where to modify it. I'm still not 100% certain I understand how to read LabVIEW block diagrams.
Please let me know if you need any additional information. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have looked over your vi. First of all you have to do some changes in the "ARSPS Initialize.vi" See picture.
The best way to check instrument communication is to send the *IDN? Command. The instrument will indentify itself in response to this command. The vi I have included is a labview example. Use this Vi to test your communication. Do not progress before this is working. The VI is also an excellent example on how to set up and close down RS232 communication.
The VI "Tfeedbackpowercontroller-nolvdt-Dinh.vi" looks OK so I guess it will work then your RS232 communication with the SPS200-50-A022 is working
    good luck
PS as mentioned before you will find all the RS232 details in the instrument manual
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted

  • How to use labview to control a robotic arm by EMG signal

    Hello,
I am working on simulation of an active Exoskeleton (wearable robot) for the upper limb using LabVIEW for my senior project. I need to use the EMG signal as an input to move the elbow joint (flexing and extending). I downloaded labview biomedical toolkit to take a ready simulated EMG signal but have a weak experience in LabVIEW.
The design criterial I am planning to use is to establish a threshold for the EMG signal using a comparator (above 0 for example) and set a counter for everytime the signal passes the threshold as(+1) in every count. Then, specify a degree value for the counter (for example when the counter reaches 10000) and feed this value of the counter to a simple simulated structure for the joint (simple angle of 2 lines) or a meter to represent the movement.. e.g. every 10000 count = 1 degree of movement. Zero crossing can also be used instead of the comparator and the signal will be filtered and that is easy to do. However, my problem is in converting this logic into LabVIEW. I don’t know how to set a counter for the signal and make every number of counts refer to a specific degree of movement and I also don’t know how to form the simulated joint structure in LabVIEW or even how to transfer this into a simple meter device in LabVIEW.
I have only one month to do this project so any help or ideas you provide are highly appreciated
    Thank you ,

    CarlFHellwig
Thank you for providing this example I just implement  it in the software to check the counter results.
In fact, the design criteria I desided to use latly is to use is to establish a threshold for the EMG signal using a comparator and correlate the EMG signal with the angles of movement of a simple simulated structure "motor" for a single joint (simple angle of 2 lines) eg. 30,60,90,120,150 degrees for flexing and extending. Zero crossing can also be used instead of the comparator and the signal will be filtered and that is easy to do.
In other words, the idea is to drive a motor for different angles based on the input EMG signals. I am now stuck with developing the algorithm of how the angles are related to the RMS value of the signal while flexing and extending and how to convert this RMS into angular velocity and angular position to form the simulation.
I will be grateful if someone guided me to a person did a similar project to discuss some issues.

  • I want to play video on my computer to make some analysis to frames, the problem that I face ,I can't change video frame rate using labview, but I can change frame rate to the video out of labview using some program

    HI All
I want to play video on my computer to make some analysis to it's frames, the problem that I face ,I can't change video frame rate using labview, but I can change frame rate to the video out of labview using some program .
I used IMAQ AVI Read Frame VI
for example I have avi video It's frame rate is 25 fbs ,my image processing code is very fast that can process more 25 fbs,so I want to accelerate video acquisition

    Hi abdelhady,
I looked into this further, and reading an AVI file into LabVIEW faster than its frames per second won't be possible. LabVIEW could read in frames faster than 25fps, but because it will be pulling the available frame at that point in time this would just give you duplicate frames. If you want to be able to read in frames at faster than 25fps, you would need to speed up your AVI file before reading into LabVIEW.
There's a good shipping example to show how to read in from an AVI file, "Read AVI File.vi". You'll notice that they add timing to make sure that the while loop runs at the right speed to match up with the frames per second of the file being read. This is to make sure you're not reading duplicate frames.

  • How to create a dataplugin for DataFinder using LabVIEW

We want to use LabVIEW to create a dataplugin that will be used by DataFinder (My DataFinder). We have found on the NI web site the LabVIEW DataPlugin SDK - , a SDK that allow us to create a dataplugin. The SDK is for LabVIEW 8.6.
The dataplugin example code of the SDK work very well in the “For testing” section of the development project. We are also able to register it to use it through DataFinder. The dataplugin is available in the “Configure ...” window of DataFinder. The problem is that the dataplugin doesn’t work with DataFinder. We didn’t receive any kind of error message or code. We only get the value “eIndexedFailure” in the “Index status” property. After expectation, it seems those input parameters are different between a LV and a VBS dataplugin. And we think that can be the source of the problem. There is someone that can help us about that?
We also want to use LabVIEW 2009. The SDK example work under 2009, but we get the same problem with DataFinder.
    Thanks

Dear Kelly R, you're right I can’t open the file in DIAdem. The RegisterLabVIEWDataPlugin.ini file is correct. But I’ve just tried to rebuild the project and then use the Installer instead of just using the Deploy. Now it works, even with my own code. Now I can open the file in DIAdem without problem. The installer uses the “NI LabVIEW Dataplugin 1.0” package. It seems that the SDK installer has never install this package.I thank you all for your help.
