Underlining in e-mail

When I underline something in e-mail, it does not show up when I send the e-mail out. Why? How do I get it to work?

You mean that to underline, I must set the font/size different from what it is in my Preferences -> Compose?
Yes.  It's not just underline.  Nothing you set in Mail > Preferences ever has any effect on what is seen at the other end.  You must set it (font, size, color, underline) for each outgoing individually, and the font/size must be different than what is in the Preferences (Compose > Message Font).  Mail has worked this way since at least 10.4.
Many have complained about this behavior, and those for whom being able to easily set the font/size/color for all outgoing messages is really important often switch to another app, like Entourage/Outlook or Thunderbird.  It has been frequently discussed in the forums.  A fix someone has produced is

  • How can I override the hyperlink underline in mac mail 4.5 OS 10.6.8

I have designed a signature with hyperlinks to my email and my website. No matter what I do, I can't seem to remove the underline that accompanies the link ability. I have tried command U and by going through the menu options in the Font section. Does anyone know how to do this?

Then explain to the OP where he/she can purchase a retail copy of 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I'm afraid I don't know where to get one.
As you know, there is no 10.6.8 disk, but one can clone 10.6.8 into a late 2011 MBP (from an external HDD).  Niel mentions a 2012 model, you are the one who speaks of 2011 MBPs.  That is why I directed the comment to you.

  • Lion - Underline problem in Mail

    Hello,
Since I have upgraded my iMac and MacBook Pro to Lion, I have noticed that - everytime I underline text in a new Mail message - the text turns white.
Did anyone have the same problem and - if yes - were you able to solve it? Or is it just a bug?
    Thx
    Nathan

I have got this same annoying problem and no trace of a fix about it. If you get news please let us know. Thanks

  • Stop Underlining in mac mail

How do you stop underlining in MacMail. No matter how many times I press the button it just keeps underlining

I had this problem today.  I placed my cursor at the end of what I do want underlined (the Underline button does not turn dark when it is on for some reason).  Then I click the Underline button until it goes grey.  Click it again and it will turn off.  That's the only way I have found that works.  I have noticed that other people just opt for using italics when one would normally underline.  That might be the new Apple punctuation.

  • Showing messages as URGENT

I need to show some of my messages as URGENT for recipients all of whom are -- I regret to say -- using Microsoft Outlook, and some of whom need some extra prompting to take the 'Urgent'-marking seriously.
I should like simply to be able to mark the messages with a flag, but cannot find how to do that.
An alternative would be to show the text in the subject-line in red, bold, underlined, &c., but Mail will let me do that in the body of the message (where I have no use for such effects) but not in the subject-line, where I do need it.
    Have I missed something ?

When you generate a new message look in the bottom right corner of the header area, beside the signature selector, and you will see an exclamation mark . This is a popup menu which allows you to set low, normal or high (=urgent) priority.
Setting the priority does not of course mean that the recipient will pay any attention to it. Mail marks incoming priority messages with !! in the flags field, but it is not very obvious. I use a rule to change the background colour of incoming priority messages to red.

  • Can you enlarge text in hotmail or gmail?

Can you enlarge text in hotmail or gmail?

You can make type bold, italics or underlined in the mail app but you cannot change fonts or the size of the font. Bullets, numbering or indents are not available as options.
Tap and hold down on text in order to select it and then you can choose BIU from the options bar and in the next popup you can select Bold, Italics, Underline or any combination of the three formatting options.

  • In mail, how do you increase font sizes in a reply.  Cannot find things like "underline", "italic" etc either.  Where are they?  Entourage was easier!!

Preferences/Compsing/set to Rich Text (only then you can use bold etc).
Then Rightclick the toolbar in Mail, and clcik Customize the toolbar.
Put the icons (with or without text) that you want on your toolbar.

  • How can I prevent an e-mail address being underlined as a link?

I am using Pages to create a document to be printed by newspapers and magazines. When I put in my e-mail address Pages automatically underlines it as a hyperlink to open an e-mail message. A link will be useless in a printed document. But I don't want the visual of the underline. How can I set Pags so it won't turn my address into a link in my computer?

    Bobbie,
You have two options; you can disable the recognition of links, or you can reformat the text to make it indistinguishable from normal text. This would involve eliminating the underline and changing the font color to black or whatever the rest of your document is.

  • Mail: how to get underlining and bold in toolbar?

I want to be able to access the basic word processing features as I reply to mail messages. I see that I can add a size font button to my toolbar. Is there a way to get underlining, bold, italic, etc... other than going into "fonts."
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I will figure out the keyboard shortcuts! I thought there might be a way to place the buttons on my screen for jiffy access. (like exists in any windows email program -- yikes!)

  • Mail Spell Check started underlining all words as incorrect

    Hi Folks.
This is my first post/question. I have searched for the answer on these forums and elsewhere but can't locate any suggestions. Forgive me if I have overlooked anything useful already posted.
My question relates to Spell Check in Mail.
For some reason, my spell check has started underlining all words with red squiggles with the exception of a few common words (eg 'the' 'and')
I'm not the best speller - but I'm not getting 98% of my word wrong. But Mail spell check thinks I am.
Does anyone know why this has started to happen and how it can be fixed?
    Thanks

Thanks Tom. That solved the problem.
How strange that the dictionary switched to Spanish overnight.
    Thanks again.

  • Mail underline or highlight words

Can you underline or highlight words in the text box of mail.

Yes. After you select your text to format it - Tap the arrow that points to the right in the next black box that pops up and then another box pops up with a B/I/U - bold, italics and underline. Tap that option to format your text.
There are a couple of options to select text - Select and Select all - so experiment to see how it works.

  • Remove underline from hyperlink in Mail.

How can I remove the underline from hyperlinks in Mail?
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks Roam.
I actually used to be able to do this, six months ago at least. Now I cannot. It is odd.  I see my older signatures and they are without the underline and I do remember being able to remove them. The simple text edit no longer works for links now....
    Apple, please fix this!
    Thanks again.

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?
*You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
    * Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
    * Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.
You can enable or disable spell checking globally:
    * Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"
You can look here for dictionaries:

  • I underlined some text in Mail and now can't stop underling additional text.  Any suggestions?

Using Mail version 4.5, I underlined some text and now can't seem to stop underlining additional copy.  Any suggestions?

Select the text you don't want underlined then click Command + U on your keyboard. When you start typing again, it shouldn't be underlined. You can access text formatting from the Mail menu bar "Format" ..

  • Where is the setting to underline a url inT mail?

When I copy a url into a mail message, it used to underline it, but does not do it now. Is there some setting I need to adjust? Thanks.

URLs and email addresses are not active when viewed in the Write window. As long as you enter them in the correct format they will be active when sent.
