Understand statspack ??

Dear all,
in a statspack report (session details) there are something like elapsed time, cpu used, memory sorts and etc. What does these mean and where I can get a detailed information about these.
Any link would be helpful.
Thanks
SL

Thanks to all. I was also reading the same site. ALso what does these mean in case of session details.
memory sorts, table scans, physical reads, logical reads, cursors.
In some of the sessions I have these figures. What can I figure out from this.
(giving the output in vertical way)
ID 105
Status - INACTIVE
Machine- ebank_prd
User Name - EVENT
Elapsed Time- 16,237
CPU Used     -645
Memory Sorts-25
Table Scans - 7866
Physical Reads -134
Logical Reads- 115249
Commits     7981
Cursor 104
Buffer Cache Hit Ratio 100
Another one :
26,INACTIVE,ebank_prd,CAIORA, 239,105, 31,093, 9,636, 67,032, 56,334 45,543, 860     0     8     100
Here the epalsed time is 239,105,
cpu used is 31,093
memory sorts is 9,636
table scans is 67,032
physical read 56,334
logical reads 45,543,860
The figures are so high
I performance is slow and what shall I do next to find out whats wrong by looking at the values.
Waiting for your answer.
Thanks again

  • Understanding statspack report(CPU time in top time events)

    Hi,
I am using oracle 9.2.0.8 RAC on SUN solaris platform.I am trying to understand my DB statistics using the below statspack report. Can you please coment on the below report
    My quetions/thoughts are:
    1) CPU time is in the top timed events,Is that eman some need to do with CPU increase. Was CPU bottleneck?
    2) Parse CPU to Parse Elapsd %: 80.28 .Is this means I am hard parsing most of the time. How can identify which queries doing more hard parses.what is mean by% Non-Parse CPU: 98.76
    3) Memory Usage %: 96.25 96.64.It seems to be there is too much memory usage. Can you elaborate this usage about what could be the reasons for this to happen
    4) global cache cr request is coming in the top wait evetns and top timed events. Is there some issue with RAC?
    5) can you please explain about 5 CR Blocks Served (RAC) and 5 CU Blocks Served (RAC) and Top 5 ITL Waits per
    Your help is appreciated!!

This statspack taken for 30 minutes interval. We have 16 CPU's.We never got ORA-4031 errors. It means you have 16 * 30 * 60 = 28,800 seconds CPU available during the interval but you only used 10,406. So you don't have a CPU problem.
For Statspack documentation, you can have a look to <ORACLE_HOME>/rdbms/admin/spdoc.txt, Metalink note 228913.1, Jonathan Lewis Scratchpad, books commended by Rajesh Kumar Yogi and also to http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/performance/index.html

  • STATSPACK & parse

    Hi,
I don't understand into statsreport the difference betwwen two indicators :
    Execute to Parse %: 70.11
    and
    Soft Parse %: 45.17
Anybody can explain me, please ?
    Nicolas.

    Nicolas,
Read metalink Note:228913.1, its a good reference for reading and understanding statspack report.
soft parse means, your statement already exists in the library cache and doesn't required hard parse.
exec to parse: a typical recommend is that parse once and execute no. of times. Please do read the above mentioned metalink note where you can clearly understand of them.

  • Calculate the space in Oracle XE?

I have a production database to store clinical histories of the patients of a hospital, to the data base 12 users of Monday through Friday connect themselves, being the greater service load between 07:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m., later between 14:00 p.m. to 16:00 p.m.;weekly 300 patients go to the medical services, which generates a volume of 1200 clinical registries to the month.
1)it can affect this to the performance of the data base XE?
2)it will be necessary to separate tablespaces SYSTEM, SYS_AUX, USERS, UNDO and TEMP in different discs to avoid the fights of I/O(Input/Output)?
3)I can create tablespace to separate the indices of the tables?
    Roberto.

I have a production database to store clinical
histories of the patients of a hospital, to the data
base 12 users of Monday through Friday connect
themselves, being the greater service load between
    07:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m., later between 14:00 p.m.
to 16:00 p.m.;weekly 300 patients go to the medical
services, which generates a volume of 1200 clinical
registries to the month.Sounds like a fairly reasonably sized system.
1)it can affect this to the performance of the data
base XE?The size of the system is reasonable. I have no idea how you coded your application. Coding method is usually the bigger factor in Oracle database performance.
2)it will be necessary to separate tablespaces
SYSTEM, SYS_AUX, USERS, UNDO and TEMP in different
discs to avoid the fights of I/O(Input/Output)?If you are experiencing performance problems and they are due to I/O waits, then yes. Otherwise it is just a way to spend time.
3)I can create tablespace to separate the indices of
the tables?Absolutely possible. We used to do this all the time to separate I/O from indexesl and tables. Again, if you see performance probems, and the problems are from I/O waits, you can probably use this technique.
If you are experiencing a performance problem, I would suggest you use Statspack to determine where the problem exists. (Performance analysis takes ridiculous amounts of time in a forum - if you don't understand statspack, it's time to start reading and look for local Oracle gurus who can help.)
Since XE is a standard Oracle Database 10g Release 2 database, the basic documentation (anything not using Java or any Enterprise Edition features) at http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/homepage is valid. For performance tuning, the manual is the Performance Tuning Guide under the Books tab.

  • TOP WAITS BY TIME WAITED - VERY URGENT

    Hi All,
I have some performance with our database and when i see the DATABASE HEALTH OVERVIEW it is showing me TOP WAITS BY TIME WAITED (queue messages).
    Any advices on this.
    Regards,
    Umair

The best approach for some one who is new to database administration / tuning is to setup statspack and learn to understand statspack.
Oraperf.com has some good tools in analyzing a stats pack report to break it down into readable sections. You should try that first and then try to analyze each of the individual events.

  • Need help to analysis "foreground and background wait events" on statspack report for oracle database 11.2.0.4 on AIX

Hi: I'm analyzing this STATSPACK report: it is "volume test" on our UAT server, so most input is from 'bind variables'.  Our shared pool is well utilized in oracle.  Oracle redo logs is not appropriately configured on this server, as in 'Top 5 wait events' there are 2 for redos.
I need to know what else information can be dig-out from 'foreground wait events' & 'background wait events', and what can assist us to better understanding, in combination of 'Top 5 wait event's, that how the server/test went?  it could be overwelming No. of wait events, so appreciate any helpful diagnostic or analysis.  Database is oracle 11.2.0.4 upgraded from 11.2.0.3, on IBM AIX power system 64bit, level 6.x

Hi: just know it now: it is a large amount of 'concurrent transaction' designed in this "Volume Test" - to simulate large incoming transaction volme, so I guess wait in eq:TX - row is expected.
The fact: (1) redo logs at uat server is known to not well-tune for configurations (2) volume test slow 5%, however data amount in its test is kept the same by each time import  production data, by the team. So why it slowed 5% this year?
The wait histogram is pasted below, any one interest to take a look?  any ideas?

    Hi,
    1) you don't tune to improve "instance efficiencies" or other more or less meaningless numbers. You tune to make a specific performance problem go away. So what is the problem that you are trying to fix?
    2) why are you omitting probably the single most useful piece of the statspack report - top timed events?
    3) load profile section is most useful when there is some frame of reference, if you know what's normal for the database. We don't have that, so there's not much that can be said except that the database wasn't very busy at the time of the report.
    4) please use the code tags
    Best regards,
    Nikolay

  • How to analyze statspack report

Is there any book I can read to understand how to deal with the sp report ?
I know how to read part of it ,
what I need is something that guide what I can do when I see that wait event X is too high.
for exmaple , if dc_constraints is too high , what do I have to change ?
not only that , I have to analyze the rest of the report , I see how can we improve performance .
    Thanks .

    Hi,
how to analyze the reportWell, I have my notes here:
    http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_reading_statspack_report.htm
Also, you can paste-in a STATSPACK report into http://www.statspackanalyzer.com and learn how to analyse a STATSPACK report.
There are several Oracle Press books on STATSPACK, you may find useful:

    Hope this helps. . .

  • Error while creating statspack

i m practicing to create Statspack report
    oracle 9.2 on windows
i created a database with the name bkp2. listener up and running.
i had never run the spcreate.sql in this db before
when i did run it i got the below error
    Creating Package STATSPACK...
    Package created.
    No errors.
    Creating Package Body STATSPACK...
Warning: Package Body created with compilation errors.
    Errors for PACKAGE BODY STATSPACK:
    LINE/COL ERROR
    1655/6   PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored
1657/13  PL/SQL: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
    1685/11  PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored
1705/22  PL/SQL: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
    NOTE:
SPCPKG complete. Please check spcpkg.lis for any errors.the code is running successfully till it starts creating the statspack package body. the tablespace and temp file which is given for the perfstat user have more than 200MB space.
interestingly when i create the same with another database in the system created both through manual and dbca, it runs perfectly.
    i dont want the direct solution for this. i jus want to know how i can find out the cause for this. i tried to trace the session i.e. alter session set sql_trace=true;
still i didnt understand how to go about from there and when i searched the error in the trace it didnt appear there!! ... so in such cases how do i pinpoint which statement is causing the error. the line no. is not of much use as the whole code is full of comments in between !!
    thank you

    i m using SYSDBA user only ...
    code:
    conn sys as sysdba
    added:
i v also run spdrop.sql as SYSDBA and tried to re-run the spcreate.sql script several times in this database. still same results. i wonder why this happens jus to this db
i v also created a new tablespace which is not used by any other user objects. and a new temp tablespace and used them while running the spcreate.sql
    still same results.

  • Statspack report issues

i need to take Statspack reports every day 8 times am i run spcreate every time for creating report or i can run by connecting perfstat/perfstat user and run @spreport.sql is enough.plz advise on this .
    thanks&regards

By default, Oracle ships with a good document (spdoc.txt) on STATSPACK, which will definitely guide you clearly the basic understanding and information of STATSPACK.
Default location for this file spdoc.txt is under
    Unix/Linux:
    $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin
    Windows:
    %ORACLE_HOME%\rdbms\admin
