Understanding ColorSync and printing set-up

I have spent two days hunting round the net for a simple understanding of how to set up my Konica Minolta Magicolor 5450 printer and my G5 Dual so they can work happily together to produce the outpt I need, specifically in relation to greys (currently coming out as various shades of pink!). I've had to digest a lot of high tech stuff and have a kind of overview on what the issues are. However, I really need much simpler terminology to help me trouble shoot. Is there a good, comprehensive but less scientific source that will explain how I can resolve the gamuts involved and get my greys to be grey not pink?

The simple anwser is most people are not sure how to explain "color" because it's something a little different to each person and it is a complicated process.
You're tweaking light.
When your trying to get your printer to print grays from Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black, you need to be able to recognize if your printing only black, or are the other colors involved. This is usually determined by your application and the printer driver being used.
Gray balence is a very critical balence because any one of the 3 colors can sway the "gray balence".
Too much Magenta is typical.
You can adjust your monitor to look like what your printer will print is one way to start. Make your work look good on the monitor and it should print okay. Remember your monitor is showing you RGB and the printer is printing CMYK.
This is not a good way to handle this.
--OR--
You can use the ICC profiles already made (or should come with your Konika printer) and use those in the applications' preferences to set up with. Remeber ICC's are color-space specific as in one for an RGB monitor and a CMYK one for the printing device.
ICC profiles are used to control the intent for an output device to represent what the image will look like a printing press, or a proofing device, or a monitor, etc.
You're trying to get 2 different things to match in 2 different color spaces.
I've worked for printing companies over 20 years and this is not an "easy anwser" question because of all the variables.

  • Default PLD and printing setting table

    Hi,
In which table is the PLD setting is stored? (other than RDOC and RITM) For example like Setting default "Template A" for Sales Order (RDR10001) or like assigning specific PLD to specific BP.
    nd

The tables are RDFL and RTYP.
RTYP table contains the default PLD template for each document
RDFL table contains entries for user specific and BP specific documents.
If you set a Document as default for specific BP then, the CardCode column in RDFL will have one entry for each BP you set as default for a particular PLD.
    Best wishes

I recently updated the designs of some templates used in our FM books. I created a sample manual using the new templates to test it out. When updating the book, I get the following errors. I have fixed errors before, but I've never seen these ones.

  • IPhoto, Colorsync and Custom Printer and display profiles

I am attempting to understand the way that iPhoto 6 handles/uses custom ICC profiles that have been set in System Prefs>Monitors>Color, and in Utilities>ColorSync Utility>Devices>Printers.
In short, my monitor and printer have both been custom profiled, (Using System Preferences>Monitors>Color, I've set my custom monitor profile. Using the ColorSync utility I have selected my custom ICC profile for my printer). My camera is using SRGB. iPhoto is set to 'Add ColorSync profile'.
Page setup is set for the proper printer and paper size.
Using the Advanced Print Setup I have selected the appropriate paper type, turned off printer color correction, and activated ColorSync color correction.
I'm not certain that iPhoto and ColorSync are actually talking to each-other.
I come from a Photoshop background, where it is possible to set the printer profile at output, using 'Print with Preview'. This setup is intended for my parents though, so Photoshop is not an option.

    1. > What sort of output problems are you encountering?
    1) No output problems, I'm simply trying to figure out ColorSync interacts with iPhoto as there's little or no documentation on the topic.
    2. > Also what printer are you using or your parents will be using?
    2. My folks are using a Canon S820
More specifically, I'm hoping to use a custom printer profile, which has produced decent color accurate results with this setup in Photoshop.
This presents 2 questions, a) how to utilize the new custom printer profile in iPhoto (use color sync utility? by declaring the profile in the 'Current Profile' section for the device) and b) does iPhoto pay attention to the Current Profile selected profiles when printing?
Basically I'm looking for info regarding the behavior of iPhoto with regards to ColorSync. The lack of documented info is the problem.
I was told today when on the phone with Apple, that iPhoto pays attention to the default profile and not the Current Profile selection, but the rep didn't sound sure, so I'm not too confident in his response.
Also, it doesn't make sense to me that ColorSync Utility would allow you to select a profile and that iPhoto would then subsequently ignore it.
My folks are importing camera images that are tagged as sRGB, iPhoto is set to apply the profile per the advanced prefs, their monitor is profiled and the profile is activated.
iPhoto has plenty of documentation regarding the tagging of images with color profiles, and the display of these profiles with regard to Apple monitors (by using CameraRGB etc) but not a heck of a lot devoted to getting good prints at home through the use of ColorSync, and custom profiles.
ColorSync was designed for just this type of thing, and when you print, it's available as a color correction option in the Color Settings section of the print dialog box, but there's nothing written regarding using it effectively and properly.
Getting color accurate prints is not a 'Pro' feature, it's something that the Mac is supposed to embrace out of the box thru the use of ColorSync...that's the whole point of ColorSync a system wide color management workflow regardless of the 'Pro-ness' of the app or so I thought.
Every rep (AppleStore, Genius Bar, Creatives, AppleCare, iPhoto Software support) try to pass this of as a pro feature, and it is not– is something that ColorSync is supposed to be doing for the whole system, not just Aperture or Photoshop

  • How do I set a default page size, orientation, and printer for a particular document in Pages?

I have a simple label document in Pages which I print to my label printer. The label is 1.49 x 3.47 inches and needs to print in Landscape, and it needs to print to my Dymo label printer. How do I set up the Page Setup or Print Setup so it defaults to this document size, orientation, and printer, every time, without me having to manually enter those settings every time?

Thank you for your reply. However, I could not get Templates to work correctly for me.  Following your instructions, I opened my document, opened Page Setup, set the printer, paper size, orientation, and printed a copy to make sure it was right. Then I re-opened Page Setup to verify that the settings were still correct. Then I saved the document as a Template. Then I found my template in Pages, opened the template, and tried to print. The first thing I noticed was that the template did not remember my printer. Then I set the printer, and printed, but I found that the template also did not remember the page size or the document orientation. So, did I miss a step here? Lion 10.7.5 and Mac Mini.

     Hi Tanya_Carroll,
You can follow this link to set up ePrint.

Once ePrint is setup, you can send an email to the printer's email address.
Be sure to use one of these email clients when sending to the printer.  If the Blackberry will not send using your original email address, setup a new email account on the Blackberry and try again.

  • How to change print size and DPI setting in Aperture

If I import a raw image from my camera (D2X) to Aperture and print the image at about 8"x10" through Aperture, it prints at about 300 DPI, if I change to size of the same image to 12"x18", in Aperture, it prints the image at about 166 DPI. I do not believe there is a way to change this in Aperture.
My question is, can I open the image at 8"x10" in PS, change the size and resolution to 12"x18" and 300 DPI then save it, open it again in Aperture and print it. If I do these things, will the image printed in Aperture still be 300 DPI and how can I check it to see if that is the case?
I have not been able to find the DPI setting anywhere in Aperture to confirm that it is what I want or need.

"You can make the pixels bigger by making the image larger but you can't add any more pixels without running some kind of interpolation filtration like GenuineFractals or a recomputation like bicubic."
Thank you for your explanation and that brings me exactly to the point of my question.
Can I interpolate my original NEF raw image after conversion by Aperture to a much larger image for print using something similar to what Photoshop does with it's bicubic smoother or as is done in genuine fractals or must I go out of Aperture and back if I want to print with Aperture. I am hoping you will tell me that Aperture is or will be capable of interpolating an image to a larger one with more than just the pixels supplied by the camera. I do not belive that these are not enough by themselves to print a quality image in a much larger size.
I may be wrong, but I believe that it is somewhat common practice to interpolate an image to get a greater resolution printed image at a size larger that what is possible with a resolution provided by the (D2x in my case) DSLR camera.
Or is this just a tempest in a teapot. In other words, will I be able to take the image out of the D2x (12.5 megapixels) and print a 13x 19" image with the same quality in Aperture (uninterpolated but enlarged) as an interpolated image in PS or Genuine Fractals and then in PS?
    Thank you

  • Printing in Photoshop and Pages sets "change" bit in document

Is there any way to defeat the "change bit" being set in documents after printing? Even if I don't make any changes, EACH time I print (even the same print params), the change bit gets set in Photoshop CS3 and Apple Pages, and then I have to save the document again, or close the window and decline to save changes. VERY obnoxious. PRINTING does NOT change documents!
These apps Do NOT set the change bit on printing:
    Eudora
    AppleWorks
    GraphicConverter
    TextWrangler
    MS Excel 11.1
    MS Word 11.1
    TextEdit
    Xbench
Photoshop CS3 and (Apple) Pages DO exhibit this obnoxious behaviour after EVERY print, even if there are no changes or other actions (except Save) between printings. Every print causes the document to be changed for some reason. These are the ONLY apps which behave this way...
(These are all the apps that I ever print from...)

If the idea is to remember the printing setup in the doc itself, okay, maybe. But they should CHECK to see if the print setup is the same as before and NOT set the Change Bit.
They should also give you the option NOT to save the print setup in the doc itself.
Personally, I think all that should be done in Page Setup, the way it's been for more than 20 years. That is an explicit command to tell the doc what its print params should be. That's where this belongs, NOT in the Print command.
99.99% of people only have one printer, so Page Setup should do it all.

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor.  This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow.  What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer.  The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

There is also a good appendix on calibration:

  • Setting up, populating and printing a fixed layout sheet from the prowser

    HI Gentlemen:
Can you help me in my problem? Given a fixed, customer-defined form layout with boilerplate text intermixed with variables, I have to generate it, populate it from my relational Oracle tables and print it locally on the customer's printer. Every component is precisely positioned with font type, size and color prescribed as well. I have never had this kind of task, which resembles to an Oracle Report definition. Please say where can I find further instructions and probably a working example.

The steps for creation of an AcroForm are as follows:
    1) Install Adobe Acrobat at your workstation. A new menu call "Adobe PDF" will appear in MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint. Use Word/Excel to design your layout and print it to PDF using the menu item "Adobe PDF->Convert to Adobe PDF";
    2) Open the generated PDF document in Adobe Acrobat and add the necessary form fields, buttons, etc. Read the topic "Forms" in the Acrobat's help first. (N.B. Do not use the Adobe LifeCylcle Designer as it will create not an AcroForm but another type of form, use the menu item "Forms->Add or Edit Fields ..." instead);
    3) Use the Adobe FDF Toolkit in a servlet to create a FDF response in order to activate the form from a Web application. (See this simple example).
