Understanding encryption using Disk Utility
Using Disk Utility, I created an encrypted disk image, into which I have copied files I would like to secure. This works well, but I am trying to understand how things work, so that I can control exposure. Fundamentally, the question is when are files exposed, and when not. Clearly, when a password has been entered, the file is visible and available. But is it being decoded (ie is the underlying file is always encrypted)? If I make a copy of a file (after password entered), is this copy encrypted? If I make a back-up using Time Machine, are the back-up files (of encrypted files) encrypted?

When an encrypted volume (an actual disk partition or a disk image) is backed-up, the data is decrypted. It's only re-encrypted if the destination is encrypted. So if you use FileVault2, your backups of normal items will not be encrypted if they go to an unencrypted disk. But, they will be encrypted if they go to an encrypted disk or disk image.
The contents of a disk image are backed-up only when it's not mounted. If it's mounted, the disk image will appear in the backup, but the contents will not have changed.

How do I use Disk Utility to help install Mountain Lion after many failed attempts?
I tried to install Mountain Lion from an App onto my MacBook.
First it said that my disk was damaged to i tried to repair it.
Didn't work.
Then it said I didn't have enough room to install Mountain Lion.
Then I tried to restore Lion.
Didn't work.
Then someone suggested I reset my PRAM.
Tried that, and now I am stuck.
I can't restore any of my backups from timeline.
I can't reinstall OSX because my drive is now locked.
And I don't know how to use Disk Utility to solve this problem!
Any suggestions welcome... I'm in way deeper than I understand and feel like anything I do is making this worse!I gather that your computer is in a less than satisfactory state, so the process below will basically start you from scratch, but you shouldn't lose anything.
Okay, can you inspect the Time Machine Backups with the Finder? About two or so folders down you should start seeing your system files. Assuming all your files are present.

You probably have an installation disk that came with your macBook. Boot from that CD and install from the CD.
Run the verify disk utilites and repair utilities if necessary.
You may want to erase your disk from the CD's disk utility. This will erase your Hard Drive (make sure you do not erase your backups, as that would be very bad).
Once the installation is complete, run all system updates. Either look through your backup and find the Mountain lion installation app, or download it from the app store again.
Run the ML installtion app.
Once everything is up and running, move all files and folders you want from your TM backups and you should be good to go. -
I have been trying to use time machine on a new lacie 2tb usb 2 drive for back up. I continue to get: "unable to complete backup.An error occured while creating backup folder". When I use disk utility to repair I get another error message: unable to repair disk unmountable.
Help me Obie One Canobie you are my last hopeI have confused myself with the facts! Started out keeping track of every step and every variable but have sort of lost it as we progress here. First I quit all applications then swapped connections between mouse port and backup disk port to influence possible bad connections question. Changed power outlet receptacle for the backup disk. Disabled the put-the-HD-to-sleep option. Then powered down the computerator.
Next started up computerator. Turned Time Machine ON and experienced multiple successful backups! Then I started up a few applications, Mail and Text Edit (but not Safari so far). Had a few more successes. After each backup, I used Disk Utility to verify the backup disk is still OK. This because the error about unable to unmount the backup disk seems to go hand in hand with Disk Utility finding the backup disk to be bad.
Put computer to sleep for the night. Upon starting up in the morning, and before doing anything else, I did a backup disk verification... BAD! Did a restart and verified the backup disk... OK.
Did a few Sleep-bad, Restart -OK repetitions.
It seems consistent: Sleeping the computer apparently messes up the backup disk but doing a Restart "repairs" it.

Now then, I don't understand everything I know here. Methinks that maybe keeping the HD from sleeping during lulls in activity has allowed successful backups through the day but manually putting everything to sleep for the night causes a return to the problem of spinning-back-up-too-slowly (which was explained earlier). Is there any truth in this?
I may abandon this Seagate thing for something more compatible. What's out there that we know works reliably for us? -
Hi, I have a hard disk failure so to recover my data I am using disk utility to restore the data on an external drive while booting from a second external hard drive. When I perform the operation and after having selected both my destination and source drives, the operation begins but soon fails due to input/output error. If I try to create an image of the drive it gives me the same error message. Any help would be much appreciated.
Disk Utility only creates a image of the drive, so it's no help getting exactly what you want, which is your files. If the file structure is messed up or the drive is failing then it's no help.
If you have a external boot drive and you can't access the internal non-booting drive though the typical Finder and windows to transfer your files via drag and drop methods, then you need to install Data Rescue on the external boot drive and it will do as best as it can to recover your files. (works on non-encrypted/non-Filevaulted drives only)

Are you sure you have hard drive failure, or that OS X isn't merely not booting?

When I check my boot SSD drive using Disk Utility under Mavericks, I often get "Incorrect number of extended attributes" errors. But if I boot off an external drive and check the same SSD, no errors are reported.
This happens not just with the SSD in my Mac Mini, but with another SSD in my MacBook (both now running Mavericks). So far as I know, all of the kit I am using is in good order (despite the file corruption reports). So I am beginning to wonder if it could be due to a bug in Mavericks? Both SSD drives have been formatted to MacOS Extended (journaled) format. Should I have used a different format, I wonder?
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
Does anyone have a solution?
Or an explanation that might help my investigation of the issue?
Thanks guys,I understand that the Corsair Force 3 is not one of the SSD drives that are supported on Apple Macs.
I did try downloading and using Trim Enabler, but the error message came up both when it was off and when it was on.
I understand that not everyone thinks Trim Enabler is a good program, though there is a new version out now, so I may give it another try. -
TS2570 Question re: "Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility"
I've worked my way through the step-by-step trouble shooting in the TS2570 article up to "Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility". So far, every step results in the same outcome - my formerly trusty 2007 Intel duo core iMac (24") will not start up, freezing on a grey screen with a blinking question mark on a folder. I don't completely understand this next step. I have both a Leopard and a Snow Leopard disc. I'm not positive whether these were for the iMac, or my old Macbook Pro. I assume this makes a difference.

These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions

2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Burning info CD's using Disk Utility?
Ok, I've got a combo drive (a few years old, on my iBook G3). I'm trying to burn information CDs using Disk Utility. I've got the dmg in disk utility, I select it and click burn. It then asks what speed I want to burn the disk at etc etc.
So, I select the slowest setting (4x) avaible. After its been burning for about 2 minutes, it said the burn ended because it had no burn underrun protection.

1. Launch Disk Utility at /Applications/Utilities.
2. Insert CD that is not copy protected.
3. In the upper pane, click on the 1st lower level of the CD path...
4. go to...Image>New... and select "Image from [disk/volume name]
5. In the dialog window that appears..select or type.......
• Name • location (desktop)
• Encryption mode (disregard)
• Image Format.(select DVD/CD master)
6. Click "Save"
Note. depending on your choice of image format...
• Selecting DVD/CD NMaster... .cdr will be created
• Selecting read-only or read/write.... dmg will be created.
7. The image file will appear in the lower Pane.
Note.... To checkout the steps so far....double-clicking on the image file will result in a disk image.(when you double-click on this, the contents will be revealed.
Steps (1-7) creates a image file of the CD.
8. Select the Image file that appears in the lower left Pane.
9. Select Images>Burn or... "Burn" from the Toolbar.
10. The CD drawer will open,remove the CD that you just copyed, insert blank CD and close drawer.
11. Burn options:
• Speed: Select a speed less than Maximum
• Verify Burns: (yes)
• Eject disc.. or .. Mount on desktop
12. Click on "Burn" in lower part of dialog.(Burn will change to Append If the Cd was previously appended)
13. And thats it...you are finished.

Problems transferring Backups to new External HD using Disk Utility restore
I'm having issues using Disk Utility to transfer my backups to a new disk.
I am transferring data from a 250GB external harddrive to a new completely zero'ed 1TB Iomega external harddrive. Both Harddrives are connected via USB. On my old 250GB HD i have a few folders containing about 100GB of data (raw video footage) that are not in the "Backups.backupdb" folder.
I follow the tutorial in item 18 of the FAQS on this forum exactly (except i didnt check erase destination) but i get an error message each time after about 3 minutes:
"Could not restore - Operation not permitted"

I can see from this that it is having issues with a file in the destination:
/Volumes/Untitled/Backups.backupdb/Mac/2009-04-15-054708/Macintosh HD/Applications/Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional/Acrobat Distiller 7.0.app/Contents/Frameworks/AdobeACE.framework/AdobeACE
This file is in the first Backup i ever made and all subsequent backups. So i went and looked at this backup through the time machine application and deleted this file from the backup and all subsequent backups. However when i then did the restore again i got the same error message and when i looked at the log it was identical except it had issues with a different "AdobeACE.framework" file from another Adobe CS3 program. I dont want to go through and delete all these types of CS3 files from my backups for obvious reasons, i would much rather understand what the issue is and know whether there is a way round it.
It may well be simply because i have not checked the "erase destination" box before restoring but somehow i doubt this is the issue as the new 1TB HD has already been "zero'ed" as explained earlier.
Any help would be appreciated guys.check the box to erase destination. the fact that you zeroed it out makes no difference. this is a known issue and checking that box was recommended for a reason.

My data I need is on my computer but it needs to be repaired but can't and when I try to restore it/back it up it ends abruptly with error code 32 broken pipe.
It was damaged while installing os x mountain lion and I found my data on disk repair (utility)Sounds like your hard drive is badly corrupted, likely due to problems that were already there when you started trying to install Mountain Lion. The problem is, if you don't have any backups already, you may not be able to recover all your data from this state. Do you have backups of that data already?
If not, I assume when you say that "it needs to be repaired but can't," you mean that Disk Utility tells you there is a problem with the disk, but that it is unable to repair it? If so, you can try repairing the drive using DiskWarrior, which can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. That may give you access to your data again, but may not.
Also, it's important to understand that if your data is not backed up, everything you do with the computer runs the risk of overwriting or corrupting that data. You may want to go straight to trying to recover your data. See Recovering deleted files.
Regarding the error code, if you're trying to back up the drive using Disk Utility's Restore tab, note that that is often not successful when the drive you're trying to back up is corrupt.
Once the situation is resolved - either because you have backups, are able to recover your data files or are forced to accept that they are gone permanently - you will need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system and all your apps from scratch. -
Hi, I am trying to install some programs (on mac book pro mac osx 10.6.8) that are downloaded in "dmg" file format. These are antivirus and security related programs. Unfortunately when I try to open the downloaded file, this does not open and I get message it is not recognised. I have also tried using Disk Utility but I get an error "unable to attach"l. This just started recently. I have downloaded the file several times but same problem recurs. Thanks for your help

They screwed up the first Flashback removal tool very badly, locking several users out of their accounts permanently. It took a day or so for them to react and post a revised tool, but the damage had been done.
They are one of several formerly PC only vendors who rushed to the Mac front back in the spring after the Flashback scare. I would advise giving all of those folks time to prove they really understand OS X before installing it on any of my Macs. There are several others who have proven themselves.
Since you are running what I assume to be a fully up-to-date OS X 10.6.8 you are not vulnerable to any currently known malware capable of impacting OS X or other Mac software. That's no guarantee there won't be something new show up tomorrow, but the chances of any commercial anti-malware software catching it before Apple can react is pretty slim, IMHO.
Now if you are concerned about Windows malware, that's a different story. -
Can't erase (rewriteable) DVD using Disk Utility
I'm trying to erase a Maxell DVD +RW in my Mac Pro's SuperDrive, but when I click on Erase in Disk Utility (I've tried both Quickly and Completely, and both the drive and the disc itself) it just spins for 30 seconds, and then stops (with all the data still there).
I also downloaded PermanentEraser and dropped the disc icon into the app icon, but it also spun for a while but did nothing. I tried selecting all the files on the disc and manually dragging them to the Trash, but when I try to empty it I receive an error code of -61.
What's going on? Does DiskWarrior somehow create startup disks which can't be erased?Hey, if you do that ... you can throw disk directly to the trash. if you used fast
erase option, you can only use disk utility !!! trying to that with others software make disk unusable.
when I started to use rewritable disks I did this mistake over more of 10 disks, before I understanded it. Toast warn you, when you use fast erase. -
Using Disk Utility to erase SDHC card taking too long
So... I had this 32 gb memory card that neither my camera nor my computer would read (iMac running OS 10.9.5 Mavericks and the camera's a Canon Power Shot SX40HS, just in case that matters).
I decided to try erasing the card using disk utility just to see if anything would recognize it after that, since nothing else seemed to work. Now, it's says it's partitioning with an estimated time of 1 day! I suspect I did something wrong. Why is it partitioning? I just wanted it to erase the card! I don't really understand all the jargon in the disk utility, even though I've used it before. I chose the least secure erase setting so it might not be impossible to recover items.
Here's the screenshot of what it's up to- still. Am I formatting the wrong thing? I don't have anything else that's 32 gb that I know of, so I'm pretty sure it's the right item, but it's taking FOREVER! Can I stop it somehow, or would that wreck the card? I put the name as 32 GB Lexar, just to be clear what I was erasing, but maybe I've messed something up. HELP?I'm not sure what you mean by a modern disk utility. It's what's on my machine. I have the latest version of the operating system that is available, as far as I know. I've tried to download Yosemite, but it wasn't available yet.
I just need to know how I can stop this process, as it is now showing it's up to 2 days and 14 hours! That's ridiculous. -
Burning DVD-Rs using disk utility
I posted here about a year ago asking why I couldn't burn my 4.28-gig video files onto a 4.7-gig DVD-R. I got some explanations that DVD-Rs technically hold a bit less that 4.7 gigs and that sort of thing. But someone mentioned that I should use Disk Utility instead of dragging the files onto the DVD-R, and that worked.
Now I'm trying to copy a 4.47-gig file using Disk Utility. I think with various upgrades, the Disk Utility interface may have changed?? Whatever I did last year that worked so well and easily, it wasn't readily apparent this year. I made a disk image of the files per certain instructions I found, but it still said it wouldn't fit.
Any suggestions?

I tried making a CD/DVD master from the DVD; using that option, I couldn't get to the size choices on my system. I still forged ahead, hoping for the best, but at the end of my efforts got an "invalid argument" message. (The disk isn't copy-protected or anything, incidentally.)
I have all the files copied to my desktop as well, and the initial thing I tried was making a disk image out of those. I did select the 4.7 gig DVD option at that point. On my desktop, the folder is 4.36 gigs, but the disk image wound up being 4.47 gigs.
Should I have selected "Read Only" instead of "DVD/CD Master," and should "Encryption" be "None" (default) or "AES-128" (recommended)?
