Understanding Fan, Fan Control, and Heating Intel iMac

Greetings all, I'm a recent convert from the world of Windows to Mac and I've enjoyed it more than you can imagine. I'm a network admin at a major airport and have come to hate working on Windows during the day to working on Windows at home. Although, I wish no harm to Windows... they keep me with a job. >:)
I'm going to show my age here so don't laugh too much...
I have trouble understanding the heat fans inside my iMac.
I do play video games, namely WoW (Yes still a young'n).
When I first got my iMac (3 months ago) and started playing, I noticed the back panel would get extremely hot to the touch. I was worried because I never heard the fans kick up past their default speed.
I read the iMac handles heat by passing it to the back panel to allow for ambient air cooling. (Love the concept). But being a Windows user for years taught me to check my temps. I downloaded iStat Pro and my CPU while playing was at an alarming 60deg Centigrade.
I checked for blockages in airflow and checked to make sure my fans were running, which iStat also showed at 1200 RPMs @ 60deg. The machine idles at about 38-39deg. also 1200 RPMs
I did get this iMac used to cut costs, wiped it clean and put a fresh install of OSX.
My question is: **Are the speeds factory fixed and if not, at what temp do the Fans kick into overdrive and start pushing some air?** 60deg is dangerously hot in such a compact unit in my opinion.
note I did install and currently use smcFanControl to max out my fans when playing games to keep the temps down so I know the fan speeds can change manually, but shouldn't the firmware inside the computer auto adjust fan speeds based on their temp?

Things have really changed... or the quality of the system is that much better than my old Shuttle Fragboxes. 60deg on my AthlonXP was within the limits but would spell premature age failure running it that hot. Its been a while since I had a true Intel product. When I was building PCs I couldn't afford them.
Its good to know that the fans will auto increase by the firmware. I suspected as much but just didn't know 100% so thanks for the response.
Ideally from a personal prespective I would like to keep my heat down below 59deg only because if the CPU is that hot, the ambient air inside the case is warm and I do not want premature failure of the bridges, HDD controller or any other component prone to heat failure. I'll take the smcFanControl off the startup processes and just manually switch it on and off when playing games. I can replace a fan cheaper than replacing the whole unit.
Thanks for your responses.

  • Printing with a networked Canon iR 3220 and my Intel iMac

I am at my wits end and I hope someone can help.
I am the sole Mac user in my company. I have a brand new, shiny 24" dual processor (intel) iMac running OS 10.4.9, that is connecting wirelessly to our network. We have a mixture of IIS and Linux servers (I believe the IIS is solely for the Windows Exchange server) Ther are 30 or so printers on the network and the one I am supposed to be printing to is a Canon Image Runner 3220 (iR 3220).
I am no Mac newbie, but I can't get the thing to print correctly. I have updated the driver from Canon (v. 1.70PS) and the PPDs (v. 2.25), followed the instructions and it will not automatically select the correct PPD. When I reset the PPD manually, it spools to the printer, but then stops all my print jobs. I try to resume and it spools and stops.
I have tried adding the printer via CanonIP, LPR, Appletalk (which gets me a message that I am connected incorrectly), setting up a sacrificial altar to the printing gods...nothing seems to work. I've tried using the iR 3200 driver and that doesn't work either.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate any help I can get at this point.
    Mike

    Hello Mike,
The first thing you need to do is determine if the iR C3220 is using the Canon printer board or the imagePASS-C1/C2 print server option. If you look at the back of the iR C3220, and there is a rectangular box with an Ethernet cable connecting to the copier, and what looks something like a SCSI-2 cable also connected between the white box and the copiers interface board, then you have the imagePASS controller. This device requires a different driver to the PS v1.70 and PPD v2.x you are currently using. It also requires a queue name of 'print' or 'direct' (or 'hold' if you don't want the job to print) and it must be entered in lower case.
Since it sounds like there are PC's on the network, have a look at their printer setup and see which driver they are using. You can also check their port config to see how they are connecting.
If the iR C3220 doesn't have the imagePASS print controller and the PC users have the PCL5c driver installed, then you may find that the iR C3220 doesn't have the PS option - it may be PCL5c only. The easiest way to tell is to open the printers web page (called RUI) by entering the printers IP address in your browser of choice. With the default page open, select Additional Functions and then Custom Settings (you may be prompted for a system ID & password). If you get past this the new view will show if you have PS as well as PCL. If there is no PS, then you will have to look at installing the latest version of Gutenprint and selecting Generic PCL5c as your 'ppd'.
If the PS option is installed, then the v1.70 driver should be okay, although there is a trick to adding it. In the Printer Setup Utility, after clicking Add, select More Printers and then Canon IP (PS). In the new window input the IP address and a queue name of LP. When you click Add the copier is queried by the driver to determine what model it is, meaning that once it is displayed in the printer list it should show the iR C3220. Given that this didn't happen for you (and if the imagePASS is not being used) then a likely cause can be the disabling of SNMP in the copier setup. You may have to get the IT guys to enable this (or at least explain why it is off).
If you go the other way of manually selecting LPD as the protocol (AppleTalk is not supported by the PS v1.70 driver) then you need to ensure that for the print using you select iR C3220 CanonPS for the ppd. If you see Canon iR C3220, don't use this as it is the wrong ppd for the PS driver - it is there as part of the PPD installer.
If you want to try using the PPD, then you can use AppleTalk but of course this has to be enabled in the copier, and if your the only Mac then it is likely that it is disabled. Again the RUI page can tell you this or you can print a Config page from the copier (I think you go Additional Functions > Report Settings > Network > User Data List).
Hope something above is helpful and if not, please reply back.

  • Printing problems with HP laserJet 1320 and new Intel iMac

My new Intel iMac won't print to my HP 1320 from Eudora or from web browsers. The applications "quit unexpectedly". From Safari, nothing happens.
I can print PDF documents and Office documents with no problems. The Intel is connected to a router via Airport. The printer is connected to the router via Ethernet. My old G4 iMac prints fine (connected to router via Ethernet) as does my G4 laptop (connected via Airport).

A post from another threat that might help.

    Solution!!!
Just spent 90 minutes with some nice folks in level 1 and level 2 support.
Problem seems to be that I used migration utility to import the soul of my old machine into the new machine. When you do that, you bring along the old print system (PPC vs Intel).
I had upgraded to 10.4.5 after the migration and assumed that it would correct any problem like that, but it had not.
After a great deal of trial and error, the solution was to go to move disk/library/printers to the desktop and restart the system
Then use the the install disk 1 that came with the iMac and use the OPTIONAL INSTALLS package to reinstall the printer drivers.
    Worked like a champ.
Suspect similar problem might happen for any of you with I/O drivers.

  • Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD and Soundtrack Pro 1.0.2 and new Intel iMac

I have the both FCP and Soundtrack Pro versions listed above. I'm thinking about picking up a new Intel iMac. Will I have to pay $199 or $99 to upgrade to FCP Studio. I just purchased Soundtrack Pro recently, if I could upgrade for just $99 and get Shake and iDVD that would be a deal...probably still a deal for $199.
I also use CS2, seems Adobe is a little confusing to me. Will I have to pay to get CS2 native for the Intel iMac? Any idea on cost and timeliness.
Separately, how will FCP run on a 20" Intel iMac once upgraded to Universal version, which I'll have to do, since it won't run under Rosetta? I currently only do Mini DV but should I plan on getting the extra video memory now, planning on eventually going into the HD video realm?
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and comments...thinking about getting the Intel iMac via CompUSA with their interest free deals tomorrow.

well, same situation here, I was about to order a Macbook Pro but then decided to saty with our beloved G platform. the reason is that it will take some time for our Pro Apps to become fully /natively compatible with Intel and I just can't wait that much.
    as for your question about using an iMac with FCP, the answer would be a;
"Yes" if you're going to work with DV only footage (using an external HD for your captured media is a must). and a
"No" if you plan to work with HD material in the future. there you've got no choice but a PowerMac G5 with a fast Graphic Card and a special SD/HD card or box to capture the footage.
résumé: if you're a serious FCP user, go for something expandible, go for a Powermac.

  • Old ipod mini and new (intel) imac

    Hi folks,
I have a small problem and I don't know how to solve it.
Let me preface by saying that I have done nothing yet, only read and not really found what I'm looking for - I hope someone can help.
I have a new imac. I also have 2 old ipods (a mini, and a nano). Both pods have music on them that I would like to keep, but the computers and so the itunes which they used are no longer available.
I would like to have the music on both pods transfered to the new imac's itunes (without losing the music on the new itunes) and then use both the pods in conjunction with the new imac and its itunes.
The new imac has never had an ipod connected to it, so it is an ipod 'virgin' if you will - not sure that makes any difference, just for info. The 2 ipods, as I said, have both been used on other computers, which are now no longer available.
I hope someone can help, if any more info is needed I'll do my best to supply it... bit of a noob when it comes to these things...
    Thanks again,
    Amedeo

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would , relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Can you ethernet and transfer files between a iMac G3 and a intel iMac

Looking for a little assistance and suggestions.
I'm trying to transfer files (jpegs and Word documents) from an older iMac G3 running OS 9.2 to a new iMac (intel) running Tiger (10.4). What use to be a pretty easy process of plugging in an ethernet cable between iMacs and turning on file sharing isn't working this time around. I called Apple support and they couldn't locate anyone who was available this past weekend who knew OS 9.2. So I'm hoping someone in the discussion group might have an idea. Thanks.

Thanks very much Jan, I'll give that a try. It's a great resource, too. The info provided under http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/os9xnet_nfilesharing.html
is very helpful. I actually had most of it in place with what's shown but missed a couple of things with the IP address. But I was close. I won't be able to try it again for a few more days but if it works I'll post back to this discussion and let you know how it went.
And Duane, good suggestion, too. I don't have access to another external hard drive but I expect it would be a lot easier, as you suggest, to simply plug in the drive and download files between machines.
    Thanks again.

  • Mac Book Pro and not Intel Imac[ don't know how to edit my post?]

I have Mac OS X version 10.6.8 and the screen is freezing up and/or somewhat crashing when I use my old version of imovie. I say old version which is hd 6.0.3. I also have the new version but I find the old much easier to use. New to me is imovie 09, version 8.0.6. Also, I have a red tint to my screen that has been going on for some time and I think that I need to replace the inverter. I have that part but I have not set down to repair and replace. I have just learned to live with the red tint, that is until everyting started acting up. Any one have any ideas as to what might be going on? Thanks in advance!

Is the Ice Cube Generation II Ide enclosure ok to use.

    Hi-
The Ice Cube uses an Oxford chipset, (part of the external housings onboard controller) so it should be fine. The Oxford chipset has been shown to give the best compatibility and performance, thus being an desirable feature.
    http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2307.htm
Using a Seagate Ultra ATA 100 drive should give you good, quiet, reliable service. There are no problems with the Seagate ATA drives.
Using the drive and housing with firewire will give you the best results, and firewire will allow you to use a bootable backup on the external drive, should the need be.
The housing comes with all the necessary cables to connect and use your external drive.
Insert the hard drive into the housing, connect the power and the firewire, format the hard drive, and you are ready to go..........

  • Intel iMac keeps randomly dropping Airport connection

My Intel Duo core iMac keeps randomly dropping its Airport connection. It never used to do this until a few months ago. The Airport menu bars randomly show half grey, or all grey, and either I have to turn Airport on/off from the menu to get all the bars back to black, or sometimes they just come back on.
Logically, I guess it can only be three things, a problem in the (a) Intel iMac (eg. airport card), (b) my Airport Express Base station, or (c) my ADSL 2+ NetComm modem router. Now, fortunately I have a first generation white G5 iMac set up side by side to help diagnose the problem. When the Intel iMac airports bars go half grey or all grey, the Airport bars on the white G5 iMac stay black or at worst show one grey bar.
At face value, I guess this points to the Intel iMac itself being the problem? Or could it be that the Airport Express Base station is the problem, and the Intel iMac is more sensitive to the problem than the white G5 iMac? I'm sort of leaning to the Airport Base station as the problem because when the Intel iMac drops out, the white G5 coincidentally drops out albeit by only one grey bar generally.
Its quite annoying because its so unpredictable and intermittent. My Intel iMac has full Applecare, but I would feel stupid to haul it into Apple only for them to say I wasted their time and the problem must be the Airport Base station/modem router.
    All comments welcome!

Well, for what its worth, I'll give you the update to my problem. The Apple technician said during all their testing, my Intel iMac never dropped the Airport connection once - and the problem might be some interference between the iMac and the Airport Express unit. That didn't quite make sense because my white G5 iMac seems fine; the occasional variable signal but not a full drop out. Anyway, the technician said he applied a 'few software updates' - although I don't know what these updates were, especially since I always apply Apple public updates as they are released.
Now, when I got my Intel iMac back about a week ago, I am very happy to say the dropout/weak signal problem appears to be no more (touch wood). Thus, I don't know what was done, but it has seemingly fixed things so far.
Would anyone know what updates Apple might have applied - and I assume its something that is not readily available to the public, since I always keep an eye on public software updates.

  • Spontaneous Intel iMac Reboot under Leopard

I have three upgraded machines running under Leopard, two MacBooks and one Intel iMac. On only the Intel iMac I am experienced what can best be described as spontaneous reboots. Suddenly while working (web browsing with Safari) the screen will blank, no sound and reboot to the login screen.
Has happened twice in the last two days ... anyone else seeing this problem? Solution?

Since 11/29 all other apps but eyeTV have been turned and kept off. Two reboots since. We have eyeTV running on two other machines (iMac G5 and MacPro) with no problems so we do not believe the issue is that software. Will happily provide syslogs to Apple if they are interested.

  • Sudden HD, CD and FAN isues with late 2007 24" iMac

When I play audio cd's with iTunes, the sound sometimes stutters. At least once during each song! I just zapped the PRAM and updated to the latest iTunes version but it makes no difference. Since I installed XP in Bootcamp and updated to 10.5.3 and installed SMCfancontrol, I have lots of audio glitches in Ableton Live and Logic Pro 8 and occasional slow disk behavior. Also, one or all of my fans are spinning faster than before. They spin fast from the moment I switch on the iMac (the audio just stuttered again) and they cool down the HD Bay 1 to around 51 degrees celcius, coming from around 60. Is there any OSX/Apple guru who can help me out with this weird behavior?
    thx

+You should un-install SMCFC and reset the SMC immediately afterwards.+
-> This is what I did! But nothing. Same fan noise. I also cleared plists of smcfancontrol, brightness control and Shades, right before I once again cleared the SMC.
According to iStat pro my temps are cooler but my fans are spinning at their default speeds. The HD Bay 1 is about 8 degrees celcius cooler. The fans are making noise from the moment I switch on the iMac.
yesterday, I erased all the free disk space. I did a repair disk permission from the boot up disc. I zapped the PRAM and the MB battery. But nothing.... Same story..... The fan(s) goes on from the moment I switch on the iMac. and Ableton Live loads up in 30 seconds!! Coming from just 3 seconds.
My iMac feels and sounds like a cheap PC computer.
Oh yes, my mouse broke down too. It now clicks when it's just laying there, doing nothing. Way to go, Apple!
Oh and Ive tried other mice. The Mighty Mouse is not causing the problems Im having with the imac. But it does illustrate how solid the Apple products really are. NOT solid.
