Understanding GSS proximity decisions

Hi there,
I'm trying configure and test proximity based responses on the GSS (v3.2) and I'm having trouble understanding how the decisions are being made. As far as I can tell, it doesn't seem to be working. For the test, I've configured three websites at three locations, one in the western US, one in the eastern US, and one in Hong Kong. I also have DRP agents running on internet edge routers at each location. The GSS is located at the EasternUS site, and is configured to probe all three websites for status. I'm trying to use http://whatsmydns.net to verify that the proximity rules are working, but it seems like the same answer keeps being sent out to all of the sites, regardless of location. First I noticed that all three answers were being used in order, and once I changed the balance method from round-robin to ordered list, that behavior went away. But now, even though I can observe the DRP queries being processed at each router, I'm not seeing the DNS requests going to the server I think it should.
I've been reading these docs during my setup, so I feel like I'm doing everything right -- can anyone help shed light on the odd results?

Hi Brandon,
The first thing in this case is to check your configuration, but, that's too complex to be done here. I would recommend you to open a TAC service request to have it investigated further.

We are deploying GSS boxes to achieve global load balancing and I would like to use DRP agents in order to scale the solution properly and I have a few questions.
1. What is the recommended HW platform for the DRP agent and should it be a dedicated box or can I enable DRP on my Internet routers for example?
2. What if Used something like adedicated 800 series router as a DRP agent in every hosting location would this work ?
3. WIch of 1 and 2 is the preferred method or is there another best practise solution I should use?
There is not so much docs around about the GSS so any help is greatly helpful.

GSS 1.2(2) Release notes:
For network proximity, use a Cisco IOS-based router that supports Director
Response Protocol (DRP) as the probing device in each proximity zone. DRP is
supported in the following Cisco IOS release trains: 12.1, 12.1E, 12.2T, 12.2,
12.3, and later releases. ICMP probing is only supported in Cisco IOS releases
12.2T, 12.3, and later releases.
The GSS operates with Cisco IOS-based routers using the following DRP RTT
probing methods: TCP ("DRP Server Agent") and ICMP ("ICMP ECHO-based RTT
probing by DRP agents"). "DRP Server Agent" and "ICMP ECHO-based RTT probing by
DRP agents" are the Cisco IOS feature names as shown in the Cisco Feature
Navigator.
I havent seen dedicated routers used for just GSS proximity. Usually drp agents are activated on running routers.

I will admit however, that all of what you experienced seems like you went to a franchised 3rd party verizon store, and not a corporate store. WOuld you mind posting the address to the store? Also did you take your email confirmation with you? And lastly, I hate to break it to you, but if customerservice did 2 day free shipping and the phone didnt or wont come today, you wont see that phone until Monday. Fed ex doesnt do standard or 2 day on Saturdays.

Two problems with the GSS's

Here are two problems I am currently experiencing:
- IP failover with no apparent outage at primary site
- Unreliable GSS proximity
Has anyone experienced any of these issues with a GSS?
Please advise what you did to resolve the issue. Thank you so much.

network proximity uses either a TCP SYN-ACK or an ICMP Echo to determine round-trip times. This is often a problem because most firewalls are stateful and will drop a TCP SYN/ACK as an out-fo-state packet. Often times, ICMP Echo requests are also dropped. The other problem is that any congestion within the network can lead to unpredictable RTTs.
You can use the following commands to see the actual RTTs recorded in the PDB.
show proximity database all

ITunes showing albums out of order iOS 7 - iTunes showing nothing not on iPad but have to download by each album

I really didn't think they could screw up iTunes more but it seems they have. It seems that iTunes is the one branch of the Apple tree that has been left to run ragged and alienate customers at will. Design, Marketing, Support and Stores still seem to be the same Apple and functioning in a way to grow as well as retain customer base. iTunes - not so much.
All albums showing out of track order on iPad now - this is a real treat for live concert albums especially. I will note that this is the case for both albums purchased from iTunes as well as copies of CDs I had already purchased and ripped but fixed their titles to sync with iTunes versions (that's another bone to pick that there should be a simple way to tell iTunes yes this is that album - so the in the store function works and album art is simply facilitated - they loose sales daily from the inability to hit in the store for CDs that you ripped from your purchased copies but that impulsive purchase that iTunes makes millions from is lost because most people do not spend the sometimes hours to link them back in)

I get the aesthetic that they were going with for iOS 7, and in most cases I think it works. iTunes is a mess. While yes I did like the visual album flip that has now been removed completely (but used in other ways or at least the style is now your safari pages on mobile) but the white is way too much most especially in the case of "currently playing" changing that mode from a great visual leaving the iPad playing playlists to an incredibly nasty stark light fixture. I do understand the design decision to make album covers appear smaller so that their retina screens are looking their best but I am hoping there is a way to chance the background in this mode. If not it has become completely useless to me and I am sure many others.

I ended up fixing my issue. The problem was the fact that some of the songs in an album were marked as part of a compilation, but some were not. iTunes seems to be less strict about grouping things in albums, so I never really noticed it.
However, this, combined with the fact that I could not update the metadata after the song is added to iCloud resulted in me changing the metadata on the computer, only to have it reset when I updated Match. I solved the problem by deleted everything from iCloud and rematching it, but only after I had corrected the compilation issue.
So, if you are havng the same issue, delete and readd everything to iCloud. I deleted everything from a second PC (that had no locally stored files) and then rematched from my laptop (where iTunes asked whether I wanted to add to iCloud, keep the song, or delete it. Choose "Add to iCloud" to rematch).

How to count frequency of two signal at the same time ?

please help me with this one i am really stuck.
The situation   : I have two square wave signal, and i want to measure the frequency of both of themat the same time.
the problem : Error -50103 occurred at DAQmx Read (Counter DBL 1Chan 1Samp).vi:3

but i dont have any problem with the analog inputs,,,multiple analog inputs can easily be measured,,,,,but the prob lem is in the digitl (square wave ) signals.

NI has an excellent overview of the accuracy and tradeoffs of the different freq measurement methods titled "Making Accurate Frequency Measurements." To boil down the essence of it, the (possibly) increased accuracy of the 2-counter method depends on a relatively long collection / accumulation time which would in turn typically limit the rate at which you could update your measured freq value.
Now let me offer some friendly but blunt advice. LabVIEW makes it easy to collect data. However, there are many other factors affecting the usefulness of that data. I support the dictum: "It is hard to measure *well*."  Choice of sensors, their sensitivity to environment, various sources of noise, an understanding of the decision to be made from the data, programming methods, etc. And even more etc.
What I mean is that just because a hardware freq measurement can be performed that is precise to 1 part per million, it would be very RARE in a test that ALL of those 6 significant digits prove useful. In your app, the measurements are presently only approximately correlated in time. And the gap of blind time between measurements will usually represent a much longer period of time than the measurement itself.
Analogy: suppose you had a 100 minute film at 25 frames/sec for a total of 150_000 frames. Now start selecting individual frames that are separated by some random # of frames between about 200 and 500. In the end, you may end up with a sequence of 400 frames in the correct order. Each individual frame is VERY accurate, but the collection of all of them can zip by in 16 seconds and not give you a much understanding about the movie.
What would usually work out much better is to sacrifice some accuracy in order to collect a greater quantity of frames. You trade off the instantaneous accuracy for the overall coherency.
Sorry, got on a roll...   Back to your question. My own preference is almost always to avoid consuming hardware resources when not truly necessary. I've been toying with counters for many years and have still never once deployed an app using a 2-counter frequency measurement. I do the 1-counter measurement and save the other counter(s) for other purposes.
If you've got an M-series board, the 80 MHz timebase allows you to measure a 500 kHz pulsetrain with a quantization error of only about 0.06% (1 part in 160). There's a pretty fair chance that whatever physical process emits that pulsetrain isn't appreciably more stable than that

Xserve - A week of uncertainty

A week since the announcement and I see no clear guidance from Apple. My contemplative confusion is turning into apprehension for the loss of what we had and a sense of uncertainty about the products that my business thrives on supporting. Is Apple not aware of how Xserves are used by their customers? Is Apple not aware of the gaping hole they have created in their product line? Or far worse, is Apple completely abandoning OS X Server and in turn the pro market?
I am not a doom and gloom type of person but the impact that this decision is having on my business and on my customer's perception of Apple could drive anyone to the brink of despair. Let me share with the community some of the conversations that I had this past week.
*Customer 1: North America's largest manufacturer of residential and commercial roofing materials*
_What they have:_ 12 TB Xsan supporting three Final Cut edit bays with a StorNext client in the data center for integrated backup to a CommVault backup system. (I should point out that we also support a graphic design department as well so there are more than 3 Macs in this company.) The Xsan is built on two G5 Xserves and 2 Xserve RAIDs with integration help from internal IT, including the fibre channel department, networking, backup, and others. The solution has enabled the video department to dramatically increase workflow, speed encoding through the use of a qmaster cluster, and improve backup integration with the enterprise CommVault system. The Xsan solution revolutionized the workflow of the department in so many ways that it is difficult to quantify.
_What they need now:_ To expand the volume. They are running over 90% capacity (yes, I know it is dangerous). The Xsan deployment above was done as a proof of concept as it took existing hardware (previously used as departmental file servers) and turned it into a now business critical solution. They have filled the volume in less than 8 months and are now begging for more. The proof of concept resulted in proof that Xsan is a superior product in providing services and features found no where else in the video market. Xsan, with its speed, function, integration with other products, and Spotlight makes the product indispensable. The integration into the corporate Active Directory domain and the ability to collect systems into a render cluster are simple and effective.
+What do we do?+ The existing Xserves are G5s so we are stuck at Leopard and Xsan 2.1.1. Now we have a real tough decision ahead of us. Do we buy Xserves and run with Xsan despite the announcement? And if we do, what is the future of Xsan beyond Jan 31 without a rack mount server. In this customer, rack space is a pricy commodity. Every U counts and I can not consume 12 U for 3 people, regardless of the benefits. Apple has a product, both hardware and software, that satisfies this customers need so well that they are begging for more of it. But can I give them the solution they are begging for? Can I sell them a couple Xserves and run the solution for the near term? But what are my future prospects? What do I do in three years or less from now when they run out of room again? What is my roadmap in the absence of true server hardware? Is there even a replacement for Xsan? Sure MetaSan is looking interesting... but no Spotlight. Sure I can run a StorNext solution... but no Spotlight. We can move to Windows storage, but then I am back on Ethernet file services and no Spotlight instead of a shared file system. If I stand on this hill and say "go with the Xserves as it is the best we have right now" and then there is an announcement from Apple about "one more thing," then my reputation is in question.
*Customer 2: NYC Advertising Agency that is 99.99% Mac based, including server architecture*
_What they have:_ We walked into this customer for our first service call back in February 2004. We found the G4 Xserve we sold them in October 2002 mounted on a wall by another consultant (oh the horror). Within two visits, I had closed all the security holes, implemented OD and single sign on, and started a relationship with the customer that grew from 12 employees, 1 G4 Xserve, and 10 Macs to 120+ employees, 3 Intel Xserves, and 120+ Macs. The Xserves support traditional print design as well as a video, new media, and development departments. Open Directory powers the organization and all Mac clients, over 120 systems, are joined to the domain and enjoy single sign on, centralized management via MCX, and unified access across all services including VPN, groupware (through Kerio), and more.
_What they need:_ This customer is growing. We just upgraded their network backbone to 10GigE, replaced the tape library with an LTO5 40 slot, and added another Active array. They expect 160 users by the end of 1Q 2011. This equals more Macs, more storage requirements and more reliance on OS X Server and the Xserve. In addition, we have had the discussion with them regarding Xsan for the video department. This was a very compelling solution that they were taking a serious look. But now, they are shaken by the announcement.
_What do we do?_ And I ask the community.... How would you respond when this customer asks, "Does this mean we have to switch to Active Directory?" Yes, they really asked me that question. My answer was that the announcement in no way devalues what they have. But I do understand their concern for the future. What do they do in a year? How about 2 years? This is a company running COMPLETELY on Apple hardware and software solutions. Where do we go from here?
*Customer 3: Fortune 500 Retailer of Domestic Merchandise and Home Furnishings*
_What they have:_ In January of 2003, we installed the first Mac in this company. A single G4 tower running Classic applications because the "patient 0" demanded a Mac as part of her accepting employment. Today, this company has over 100 Macintosh systems and three Xserves in three different states. Macs are in the IT department and we went from the platform of distrust to a platform that is a peer of Windows and Unix, including at the server level. The first Xserve was deployed in 2005. The second was installed in 2006. And the final one in 2008. All three are still in active production today and provide critical file services for over 100 Mac users and many Windows users. The servers are all bound to Active Directory, participate in enterprise backup, are monitored by internal IT via SNMP, and provide unparalleled uptime and performance.
_What the need now:_ They are running out of space. No, they ran out of space a long time ago. In October we started the process of proposing upgrades to both the Xserves and the storage to greatly enhance the solution and expand it to cover more departments and likely more Macs. Two of the servers are G5 Xserves so Snow Leopard is out of the question. They were planning on buying two new Xserves and new storage. But as of today, the talks are off. It appears that we are going to lose this business to a Windows storage solution. Farewell Mac servers. Farewell Spotlight searching. Farewell simple management of the Mac systems.
_What do we do?_ What is our argument here? We have none. In light of the announcement, I no longer have a viable solution to offer this customer. The Mac Pro is not a solution. They need more storage and they need a device that fits deployment requirements. The Mini does not do this? How do I get 10+ TB of storage connected and how do I support 100+ concurrent users?
*Customer 4: US Branch of Major Magazine Publisher that is 99.99% Mac, including server architecture*
_What they have:_ This customer is the poster child for Xserves. They have 11 Xserves, including a G4 still in active use. At their peak, we were running 16 Apple Xserve RAIDs (these have mostly been replaced by Actives). These Xserves run file services, FTP, Mail (Kerio), automation, Open Directory, offsite replication, and much much more. And here is the kicker! We deployed them in May 2006 running 10.4.6! The last time the primary cluster was touched was January 2009 when we upgraded to 10.4.11. Yes! There are 7 of the 11 servers still running 10.4.11! And do you know how often we service that cluster? 4 times a year. That is it. There is no downtime. There are no problems. This is an environment of about 450 users (all Mac) working directly from servers on multiple shifts. All machines are bound to OD and we are using MCX, Kerio Mail Server, UTS, NetInstall, and much more in this environment. And the whole thing is managed by a staff of 2 technicians. Oh, and in 2007 we built a dedicated datacenter for the Xserves, including proper power, cooling, and fire prevention. This set the foundation for a 10 GigE backbone and all servers operating with aggregated links to stacked edges switches with EAPS ring failover. This environment is a model of enterprise deployment of Apple hardware rivaling any Windows deployment out there.
_What they need:_ The customer is currently rolling out workstation replacements company wide. These units are 10.6.x. The 10.4.11 server are doing fine but it would be nice to unify and get all the MCX stuff working without the hacks. Purchasing new Xserves was a planned project for the beginning of next year.
_What do we do?_ This is the one customer in which we will likely still push the Xserve before it is no longer available. The nature of the business and the cyclical nature of upgrade cycles can likely allow us to operate on 10.6.x at the client and server for at least 4 years. So despite what Apple is doing, we may be able to keep the dream alive in this one customer. But in February will we be standing with egg on our face for a foolish recommendation?
*Customer 5: Fortune 100 Insurance Company*
_What they have:_ We support Mac departments in 4 states. Two of the departments are running Xsans. These are obviously driven by Xserves that have been embraced by corporate IT. In corporate America, projects take time to plan and approve. The Xsan expansion project has been in the works most of the year. It has been approved is now ready to start placing orders. But we are clearly caught in a tough position.
_What they need:_ More storage! And InnerPool from Active. InnerPool will go down in history as the greatest product that never will be. The success of Xsan in these two departments almost can not be measured. The undeniable reality is that the solutions is a wild success and the departments want more.
_What do we do?_ The word from Active is that InnerPool is dead and will never reach a customer. The Xserve is no longer. Yes we can buy it and yes it is approved. But I have the same uncertainty as listed above. Great, I deploy Xserves and Xsan today. But what is its future? And without InnerPool I has inefficient LUN carving.
Conclusions:
I am sure that my scenarios are shared by many in the consulting and IT fields. Over this past week I've struggled to understand Apple's decision to discontinue the Xserve. I've struggled to ease the concerns of my customers. I've struggled to find the correct message to tell customers in this time of uncertainty. I've struggled to understand what my company will do to fill the void left by the absence of the Xserve. And, most troubling, I've struggled to understand what the loss of the Xserve will do to Apple's enterprise solutions including the future of OS X Server and the traditional markets Apple supports.
I understand that on the surface this is the retirement of a hardware product. I understand the basic argument that the product was not a powerful seller. But being an Apple Reseller and ACN, I also know that no one is pushing Xserves other than us. The Apple retail store is incapable of pushing the Xserve as a product. And please, real businesses are not going to Apple retail. Does anyone walk up to a person selling iPods and have a discussion about real business needs? And why was I never able to find the Xserve on store.apple.com's home page? If you want to sell a product, you really need to let your customers know it exists.
I understand that Apple is all about the one thing. They always have been. When the iMac saved Apple it was the hot item. Then the iPod replaced it. Then the phone. Now the iPad. Apple focuses like a laser on the one thing that is big. But what they are missing is that there is a loyal group of customers in content creation that are only able to do their work because of the power, ease of use, and products that make up the "pro/enterprise" segment of Apple's business. This includes the Mac Pro, the Xserve, OS X Server, Xsan, Final Cut, and more. What is the future of all these products? The Mac Mini Server is surely not the future.
Again, this is speculation driven by lack of guidance and leadership. But if my customer reaction is an indication, the inability to deploy a server class device means the inability to run OS X Server. This will mean that all of the duties found in OS X Server will be replaced by other systems. This means no OD, no AFP, no NetBoot/NetInstall, no iCal, no Xsan, no qMaster, no MCX, no synchronized home folders. The list goes on and on. And by translation, this likely means the decline of the viability of Final Cut deployments and even content creation in general. If we are going backward to isolated workstations and the inability to deploy space efficient direct to broadcast solutions, the business will be going elsewhere. In the space of a single Mac Pro, I could deploy and entire 50 TB Xsan with 1U left over (2 Xserves, 2 Active arrays, 2 FC switches, 1 MD switch). Apple is not offering progress and this is not a better solution.
When Apple retired the Xserve RAID, Apple provide the community with a better solution. The Xserve RAID was a product of its time and time marched on. Apple was not interested in maintaining a peripheral product and rightly left the business to organizations specializing in mass storage. By bowing out of the segment, the community got faster devices with more redundancy. The difference then was that Apple said, "hey, we are not going to make the Xserve RAID anymore but here is something better." Today, they are saying, "hey, we are not making the Xserve any more and we have nothing better to tell you."
Yet, the Xserve RAID was a peripheral. It was not a host system running Apple's OS. For the company that is known for making the whole widget, how does this announcement sit? We are now missing the hardware component of the whole widget and the options, virtualization or licensing to third party hardware vender, goes in direct grain to everything Apple has done.
I know others in the community have covered this. The hardware Apple is offering is not a replacement. Honestly... A Mac Pro that has a hardware problem is a minimum of 2 days of lost operations for a company. Take the power supply. On an Xserve, you have a second one and if you were smart enough to get the spares kit, you can replace it in less than 1 minute with one hand tied behind your back. No downtime. No service disruption. Now, the Mac Pro... There is no spares kit. That means if the unit goes down you call Apple to diagnose the problem (or good golly you bring it to the Apple Store?), they send the part to your closest Apple Authorized Repair Center, and then they arrange for an onsite repair. This process will put you out of business for 2 days minimum. Unacceptable.
I am not sure who Apple thinks their server customers are. But the customers I support will never be satisfied with the Mini Server. Apple targets the Mini Server to SMB. Well, let's assume that the SMB has 10 iMacs. The iMacs have a collective storage capacity of 10 TB. The Mini has 500 GB. How does that help the environment. If we look at Apple's traditional customers running content creation, a single user could fill the server with 100 photoshop files or a few video files. And don't get me started on the expansion issues with the Mini.
Apple, regardless if the end result is licensing server to another vender for hardware development or allowing virtualization, please open up the communication channel and reassure a shaken industry on what you see as the realistic future of your server products. The guidance of your transition guide is not guidance at all. Please come down from the iPod cloud and understand that you have a lot of customers quavering in uncertainty.
And finally, if Apple is using the retail stores to provide guidance to the types of businesses that they sell their product to, then they should call us. We have been integrating Macs in enterprise for over a decade. We have Macs in every pharma in the state, many in regulatory roles meeting strict government requirements. We have Macs in insurance, research and development, finance, law, and more. These system meet or exceed HIPPA, SOX, FDA, FTC and other government regulatory requirements. Apple, you are already in the enterprise. Please don't give up on what has taken years to achieve.
Thank you for reading. We are passionate about the services we offer and strive to give our customers the best possible solutions. Apple has enabled us to do that for a number of years. Now I am concerned. As an ACN employing numerous ACSAs we are concerned with the writing on the wall. Apple, please provide more communication on your intentions.

Funny you should ask... At about the same time that the Xserve was discontinued, we also lost our channel rep of nearly 14 years. Right now we are not sure who our rep is. I have however, sent this to as many people in Apple that I could think of. And I plan on continuing to reach out to as many as possible.
The sad reality is that this decision is impacting customer deployments and the future of customer installations. Apple strives for market share and loves to tout those numbers. But the numbers we fought for over these last eight years are going to disappear.
As much as this impacts our business, we are making up for it in enterprise deployment of systems. We will survive and lead in our geographic area. I do not fear that. But OS X Server is a UNIX server and with it has come all of the benefits of a UNIX system, including legitimacy in a data center. The Intel Xserve cemented this reality because of its hardware configuration and form factor. Yes, we have G4 and G5s still in service. But those are mostly in all Mac shops that understand the benefits and can work around the buzz word limitations. But fortune 100/500 IT departments did not really get on board until the release of the Intel server.
Still beating the drum to raise awareness. Spread the word and talk to your Apple reps.
Also, ask about the direction that Apple's Enterprise team is going. If the news I hear is correct, then our fears about all things pro and enterprise going away are likely true.

After Effects CC 2014 - Rendering / saving project file to CS6

Hello all,
I'm writing here to try to understand the st**** decision to exclude mp4 and mpeg from the render possibilities from After Effects CC 2014. I would gladly go back to CS6 but as of now I have more than 40 hours of edited video project in CC 2014, which of course cannot save project files to CS6, which is another brilliant move by somebody in Adobe that has the title position of "the dude for giving ideas to p*** people off". Now the problem is this, if I choose to export just a single clip from my composition of course I cannot export it to a container and codec of my choosing since it cannot be exported to Media Encoder, and has to be done in After Effects or I have to make a composition for each and every file, in order to export it to to the Media Encoder.
Now I ask you good people any way to move my projects back to CS6, remove this unusable piece of software and be over with it, I simply don't have the time to be toying around with Adobe's new found glory for Apple and exporting stuff to QuickTime, taking 3 times longer than mpeg. Tried with OpenSeasame and by just exporting an XML file but none work so if there is any other way please let me know.
Good thing I only got 1 month and didn't pay for the whole year...

Did you use any of the new features in either AE CC (the original one) or CC 2014? If yes, you're kinda stuck.
If no, you'd have to engage in a two-step process: backsave the AE CC 2014 project to AE CC, then open the project in AE CC and backsave to CS6.

Cisco/IPsec VPN built-in service of 10.6.1 does not work!

I have been using for a while in Leopard (10.5) the Cisco VPN client delivered by Cisco company until I upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6.1) which comes with a native built-in Cisco VPN client and I gave it a try in order to replace my dedicated Cisco app.
I set up the Cisco VPN service in System Preferences > Network with the same settings than those used in the Cisco client but the connection fails when it is launched from the 10.6 network VPN service... while it works perfect when launched from the Cisco app itself.
I need to activate a VPN connection in order to connect from home to my enterprise server and I have to respect the VPN settings the network administrator of my enterprise put in place.
Those are very common:
1. Host name
2. Group name + Group password
3. Domain name\Userid + User password
4. RSA pass code (random code provided by a specific RSA keyfob)
5. Transport is IPsec over UDP
According to my testings, I would say that:
1. The connection to the host is OK.
2. The validation of the group name + group psw is OK.
3. The validation of the userid + user psw is OK.
4. The RSA pass code is rejected.
According to my enterprise network engineer's investigations, the possible reasons of the connection failure could be:
1. the UDP protocol is not (well) supported by the client service.
2. and/or the extended authentification phase (aka "Xauth") is not working as it should.
As far as I can see in other VPN clients, there is usually an option to select whether the transport is run over TCP or over UDP. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find such option in 10.6.
In my opinion, it could be either a bug or an (undesired) limitation of the Apple VPN service. In both cases, it requires a quick fix from Apple as, for time being, this issue prevents me and many of us connecting to our enterprise servers when we are far from its local network.

Thank you for your answers which confirm the limitation of the Apple VPN solution to the TCP transport only.
I have to say that I do not understand such a decision from Apple since the UDP protocol is very common in the enterprise world.
I will thus have to rely on the Cisco app itself. Is the version 4.9.01 (0080) the correct one for SL as well?

Where can I download Acrobat 9 Professional Extended

I have tried to download my Acrobat 9 ProExtended on my new PS, and followed the procedure indicated by Adobe, however a message "invalid serial number" was displayed.
Needless to say I have checked and rechecked the serial number indicated in "my account" <Removed by Moderator>, registered on July 31, 2013, but the same message was displayed.
An attempt to solve the problem by talking to the "Adobe help" person a Mr. Kumar "using chat" was unsuccessful.
He directed me to the sales person who asked $200 for the downloaded version of Acrobat XI, but this price does not include CD with Acrobat XI version.
At this stage I realized that the message "invalid serial number" is just a lie. The number is correct, but Adobe decided to prevent owners of older versions of Acrobat
to download their program on a new computer.
The consequence is obvious, if you download Acrobat XI for $200 and your hard disc crashes two years from now, then you will not be able to download your Acrobat using your serial number,
and Adobe sales people will advise you to buy the next version of Acrobat for another $200 or probably more..
I understand that such decision has been taken by Adobe greedy sales managers, but I will try to find a competitor to Adobe that has a decent sales policy.

I am sorry that you are facing difficulty obtaining the installation files for Acrobat 9 Professional Extended. If you choose the download option at the time of purchase then the installation files will be available under your account at http://www.adobe.com/. You can find more details at Find a download link on Adobe.com.
If you ordered the installation files on a CD then you can copy the contents of the CD to a USB drive if your new PC does not contain an optical drive.
Finally you can download Acrobat 9 Professional at Download Acrobat products | 9, 8. I am not sure if this installer will work with an Acrobat 9 Professional Extended serial number. If you did choose to purchase Acrobat 9 Professional Extended on CD then I would highly recommend locating the CD for the proper installation files.

TransferHandler under the JDK 1.5

There is a problem with TransferHandler in applet under the JDK 1.5.
For example, try to execute an applet with the code from the classic sample of Tutorial http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/dnd.html#cut. Any actions do not work through the menu items :-( Maybe are anyone who faced with this?

These are obviously excellent reasons not to use stack smashing protection in the official Sun binaries.
However, if one does not care for speed, there might be a small chance that it could be sane to compile the jvm on ones own with a stack smashing protection enabled compiler.
concerning 4): The fact that Java prevents buffer overflows was one of the main reasons to use Java for this application. But I am also concerned about the very minuscule chance that the JVM itself might be attacked by a buffer overflow exploit. The Java application makes use of sockets to establish a data connection. Maybe there might be a bug in the jvm, which enables malicious TCP packets to crash the jvm and exploit a buffer overflow.
Do I understand it correctly, that Sun does neither offers 1.5.0_00 -> 1.5.0_04 patches, nor the 1.5.0_04 source code, but only the 1.5.0_00 source code? Is this a concious decision (i.e. a Sun policy)?
I could perfectly understand such a decision, because it could be a measure in order to force Java users to use the Java/Solaris/UltraSparc combination for cases where reliability/security really is mission critical, which would obviously be a sane business decision by Sun.
But I only would like to make sure that I do understand the facts correctly: The source code is really only intended to be used for research purposes as it is not patched?

DB lookup - is there a way ?

I have a simple requirement and I'd like to use brfplus for that if possible
- Table in ABAP with 100k entries (legacy material number and customer material number)
- I'd like to create a call to BRFplus which would take all lines of a document (all legacy material numbers) and get customer materials numbers
- I can do a call within the loop and execute the DB lookup expression one by one but from obvious reasons this is crazy but is there any other way ?
or maybe this requirement is not possible to implement within BRFPlus without doing any ABAP coding ?

ihave read the blogs about value mapping using BRF ( instead of Value mapping in PI ) yet could not find an answer for a "technical mapping scenario" - today we are using a DB lookup since we have rather small tables
our scenario :
we have few ERP systems in our landscape each of them has it's own company code codes.
today we have a DB table with mapping of the codes
oracle sap    legacy Oracle ERP2
100     1000    450      320
150     1150    210       425
we are looking for a way to store those "mapping" tables in BRF/BRM so users will be able to change them W/O the need to change them in ECC./ PI but directly in BRF/BRM.
as far as i understand by using decision table we will be able to select onfly from one "direction"
means we will need to multiply the table rows to represent all the "from system" to System combinations. or am i missing something and there is another option in BRF/BRM to manage this type of relations.

Seeburger 1.8.2 Upgrade: Subject missing in AS2 Ack

After upgrading our PI environment with Seeburger 1.8.2, we started facing an issue in the Ack Report (MDN Response) received in response to the AS2 messages posted to our partner.
We have a scenario, where HTTPS AS2 messages are posted through the Seeburger AS2 Adapter receiver channel to an external partner with 'Handle received MDN option' set as "Refer to XI system".
We have another AS2 Adapter sender Reports channel which receives these MDN and provides confirmation on posting of these messages to the end-users.
After the upgrade, the Subject value is missing in the Ack Reports XML.

Actually, I saw the rant in the bug reporting tool on dropping pam_userdb.
I understand fully the decision:
- PAM should not have plentora of dependencies: nobody would integrate
pam-sqlite, pam-postgresql or other pam modules with external dependencies
into the 'pam' base package
- Berkley DB has licensing issues, so AUR is a good place for it
- ArchLinux is a bleeding edge distribution, there is no such rule as "keep features for
the current main release".
I'm personally opting for an AUR project 'pam-userdb' which just provides this one module,
so nobody has to migrate 200 users on his production system.
And a short notice on the main page about the dropping of db support in PAM and the
availability of the separate module.

Lack of DIY hardware upgrades for retina MacBook Pro

Can any hard-core Apple Fanboys testify that somehow built in ram on new retina MacBook Pro's is more stable than replaceable RAM modules which have come with previous models? I understand Apple's decision to move to built-in ram to make the overall computer smaller but it worries me a little not being able to replace or upgrade the RAM whenever I want to or whenever I need to. So I'm wondering if anybody can testify that built-in ram is better.

I would love it if they didn't phase it out. I just think its common sense. No one hear can say they understand apple more than the next forum member. I simply was asking if anyone here had any better technical knowledge than myself and knew for a fact that built in ram was or was not any better than sodimm. Ram
Is one of those things that us techs troubleshoot and replace often and it's a no brained that those with retina MacBooks will have to have their entire motherboard replaced if the Ram goes bad, unless apple put the ram on a separate replaceable board.

How to set database location for stored procedure

I've already found out that setting location is not only my problem, but I can't understand the correct decision. We using CR to create reports, accessing the data in MSSQL by ODBC.
Previously (up to version 8) I set location directly, editing the "Table" field in "Set Location" form. Command after report creation was:
Proc(DBNAME.dbo.PROCEDURE_NAME;1)
I erased "DBNAME.dbo.", so the correct command was
Proc(PROCEDURE_NAME;1)
After that, the report can run on any database name, any ODBC datasource with any owner name of procedure.
Now we had to upgdate to CR 11 Developer Edition.
Here I can't erase database location. But when I change database location to ODBC datasource for another database, the properties of stored procedure "Catalog" and "Owner" remain the same as they initiated when report was created! So, when report runs, it call
exec OLD_DB_NAME.dbo.PROCEURE_NAME;1 ....
So, the report doesn't work on customer database, because it has different name.
How can I erase any database location in the report?We run reports using API from Gupta Team Developer applications, may be it is possible to set database location by API before running report?
Plese help, any tips are usefull.

When I set location to another database (i.e. another ODBC datasource) by clicking Update button, "Catalog" property is not changing! It remains unaltered. I had to remove procedure from report and then add procedure from another database, so there was a lot of formatting fileds after that.
This is not a right decision. I didn't solved current problem, I only temporary patched it.
The correct desision is to set location programmatically from application.But function PEGetNthTableLocation returns empty strings in CR11, or I incorectly declared this function (from CR8.5):
