Understanding OSPF For MPLS Superbackbone.

LSA1 is Router LSA And LSA2 is Network LSA.What is the difference between them?In which direction are they propogated?I need to understand it neatly as I am studying it for MPLS Superbackbone .

In short, the router LSA is generated by all routers and describe all the connected interfaces on that router.
The network LSA is generated by the Designated Router (DR) only and describe all the routers connected to the broadcast or NBMA network for which this router is the DR.
If you need more information on what the LSA are for and the details of OSPF in general, I would recommend you read RFC2328.
Here's the link for it:
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2328.txt?number=2328
Hope this helps,

  • Looking for MPLS Guru

    Folks,
I need some real world advice on choosing the right hardware for MPLS backbone. Presently we have 7600's, 7500's and 7200 vxr's and we want to build a MPLS backbone. My question is that is it advisable to choose 7500 and 7600(sup 720) as the core of the MPLS backbone and the 7200 stays at the edge.
My understanding is that 7500 has been end of lifed and the 7600 is more of an edge router that does not support advanced features of MPLS. Could I use any of these routers at the edge and use 7200 vxr's at the core???
Any thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Being the geek that I am, I would say 7600s with Sup-720 3BXLs. When you are trying to choose an edge router, look at how many terminations, types of terminations, amount of traffic and peers, etc. If you are going to do heavy optical terminations, or a large number of peers (transit and Internet) I would use the 7600s. If you just need a stepping stone, the 7206VXR is a good router with the NPE-G1 engine. Also, the NPE-G2 engine is supposed to be released soon. This essentially doubles what the G1 can do. Hope this helps.

  • IOS for 2801 having support for MPLS

    Assalam o Alaikum,
Is there any IOS for 2801 router which has the support for MPLS?

    Alaikum Al Salam,
Please use Cisco Feature Navigator to find information about Cisco IOS software images and the supported features for your platform(s) :
    http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/index.jsp
Search by feature and choose MPLS, and then choose Cisco 2801 as the platform, you'll get a list of the IOSs that support MPLS on your platform, and please always check the required DRAM and Flash.

  • In reviewing the Cisco Licensing Guide, there is a license part number for MPLS on the Nexus 7010. Part Number is N7K-MPLS1K9.

In reviewing the Cisco Licensing Guide, there is a license part number for MPLS on the Nexus 7010.  Part Number is N7K-MPLS1K9.  Is there a corresponding part number for the Nexus 7710?

For the benefit of others, here is what we found. The N7K was hitting the bug CSCtg95381.
    Symptom
Nexus 7000 may punt traffic to CPU; so that the traffic may experience random delay or drop.
Further looking, ARP is learned and FIB adjacency is in FIB adjacency table.
    Conditions
The problem is caused by race condition. Some hosts have not responded to the ARP refresh sent by
N7k which in turn  trigger to delete  ARP entry  due to expiry. As a result   the route delete notification is
sent   to URIB from the process. However there is still traffic coming to   given IP address as a result  the next packet that hit glean resulting   in triggering ARP and  hope ARP is learnt from the host this time.
    Workaround
    (s):
    Clear ip route < host>.
Not  totally explains why it was working for certain client-server  combination but yet the workaround is holding well for end-points when  implemented.
There  would be no host route for the destination server in the adjacency  manager on N7K-01. The only thing thats there is the subnet route  pointing towards the vlan gateway address. Implementing the work-around,  a new /32 route can now be seen in the adjacency manager for the  server.
The bug is fixed in releases starting 5.1(5). Planning to upgrade to 5.2(3a).

  • OSPF opaque (MPLS-TE)

    I have some question:
1.MPLS traffic engineering use opaque (LSA type 9,10,11) to get eg. BW of the link!
But in OSPF , when there is a change in an area, the LSA will flood to all. So if there is an application transfer a file on the link, the BW will change continuosly (?), so the LSA will flood and how can the CR-LDP know what information about BW on that link to use.
2.In an multi-area OSPF network, which router will start the label distribution process??
3.Is there any document about opaque with MPLS-TE. I try RFC3630 but it's very difficult to understand.

    Hello,
MPLS TE is a pure control plane feature. So:
A1) The announced bandwidth does only change when there is a new "booking". This means that only when a new tunnel is routed over a link, when a tunnel is removed from a link or when a link up/down event occurs flooding is needed. To control the amount of opaque LSAs, thresholds are used for the booking bandwidth value.
The real bandwidth utilized at any moment in time is not taken into account by MPLS TE!
A2) Every MPLS TE enabled router will send LSA 10 and ABRs will insert this info into other areas. So pretty much LSA generation and flooding does not deviate from "normal" OSPF LSAs.
A3) I would also read "RFC 2370, The OSPF Opaque LSA Option".
Hope this helps! Please rate all posts.
    Regards, Martin

From R1 to R2, correct?  (R2 to R1 could be tricky - depends on how R2 interact with MPLS).
For R1 to R2, you could just set a direct (high) OSPF interface cost on the R1 port to MPLS.

  • IOS VERSION FOR MPLS

Hi! i'm trying to do a lab at my university implementing MPLS. I have routers cisco 2610 series. This is my configuration:
    Cisco2600-2(config-if)# ip route-cache cef
    Cisco2600-2(config-if)# mpls label protocol ldp
    Cisco2600-2(config-if)#mpls ip
My problem is that i can't use te "set mpls experimental topmost " command at the policy-map. My options are:
    Cisco2600-2(config-pmap-c)#?
    QoS policy-map class configuration commands:
    bandwidth Bandwidth
    compression Activate Compression
    drop Drop all packets
exit Exit from QoS class action configuration mode
no Negate or set default values of a command
    police Police
priority Strict Scheduling Priority for this Class
queue-limit Queue Max Threshold for Tail Drop
random-detect Enable Random Early Detection as drop policy
    service-policy Configure QoS Service Policy
    shape Traffic Shaping
My version of the IOS is:
IOS (tm) C2600 Software (C2600-TELCO-M), Version 12.3(15b), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
wich version do i need to run this command and configurations?? Any information will help. Thank you very much. Best regards!!

It is my understanding that you don't have that capability in those images (or platform). I didn't find the feature in the feature set of the 2600 platform. The feature you are looking for is: "MPLS Quality of Service (QoS) Enhancements"
    From the feature set definition:
    - MPLS quality of service enhancements allow service providers to classify packets according to their type, input interface, and other factors by setting (marking) each packet within the MPLS experimental field without changing the IP precedence/DSCP field. For example, service providers can classify packets with or without considering the rate of the packets that PE1 receives. If the rate is a consideration, the service provider marks in-rate packets differently from out-of-rate packets.

  • Routing Protocol recommendation for MPLS Network

I am in the process of building a 14 site MPLS network for voice and data traffic. The vendor installing the network has configured RIPv2 as the routing protocol. I am considering switching this over to EIGRP. Can anyone explain to me why this would be better or should I just stay with RIP.
    Thanks

    Hi Chip,
Its not very clear whether you are implementing a MPLS network or implementing a Network over MPLS for an end user with 14 sites.
    1) If MPLS network then other IGP variants than OSPF and ISIS best avoided. Now if the choice is between ISIS and OSPF then my personal recommendation would be OSPF. And this decision is purely driven by Operational Considerations rather than any technical advantages. Since at the end of the day what matters is how easy it is to implement add delete or troubleshoot the network.
2)If for End User then it would not be right to recommend EIGRP or RIP or OSPF without knowing the current size & topology of each of these 14 sites, as well as the desired expansion plans. But if these 14 sites are the only sites and are all standalone branch sites connecting over MPLS VPN then RIP,EIGRP or OSPF can be implemented as per your and customer comfort.

  • Help understanding workflow for best quality.

    Greetings.
I've read countless hours on this forum in the effort to understand this extremely complicated subject of getting my video out of my camera and onto a DVD in the best quality possible, and I'm still a little confused.
I'm not recording anything that is particularly high-action, but rather weddings, funerals, (yeah, I know), children's school programs, and my next big project is a seminar with keynote speaker.
I have three Sony HDR SR-11 cameras, which clearly record video as ACHDV and the video signal is 1080/60i (NTSC). I could also record in SD with an MPEG2 file.
I understand the a DVD is only SD at best, and am recording in HD since I have room for the files, and someday we might have better options for the video than we have now.
I started using iMovie, and have iMovie 11, and just love how easy and slick it is to make impressive looking stuff.
Once I import into iDVD to make the cool menus, I use "professional" encoding. I am about to produce a longer video than will fit on a single layer disk, and will be burning to a dual-layer DVD.
I own a copy of FCE, but was overwhelmed when I first started to use it, and on a time crunch for that project, reverted back to iMovie.
How I record events is to set up three cameras from different perspectives and then create a movie from the best angles, switching back and forth. This is a little cumbersome in iMovie, but I've had no trouble except for the date stamp disappearing and having to fix that on my most recent project. (once the date stamp is gone...it's hard to figure out where the clips are that you need for the next minute or two at a time).
I'm about to embark on an effort to market my work professionally, and am clearly working with amateur equipment, and without the time or resources to start all over with a $50K investment, would like to squeak by on what I have, and need to get the best quality possible out of it. Without any question, my market requires the movies to be on DVDs.
I'm most confused by interlacing/deinterlacing issue. I understand what the two are, but not what to do about it, if anything. I notice there is a button to check "deinterlace" in iMovie, and wonder why it's there and if it works and if I should be using it.
What would my specific advantages be, if any, to learning FCE? If a huge difference could be made, I would take the time to learn FCE, and I could lay out another couple hundred bucks for other software, if you had some to recommend that would greatly surpass what I'm doing, in place of iDVD or another intermediary I should be using.
I've been exporting with QT, using the following settings:
    Video:
    Compression: H.264
    Quality: High
    Key frame:24
    Frame reordering: yes
    Encoding: multi-pass
    Dimensions: 960x540
    Sound:
    Format: Integer (Little Endian)
    Sample: 44.1 kHz
    Sample: 16-bit
    Channels: Stereo
Then create menus in iDVD and burn to DVD.
Could you please give me feedback on my process, and try to answer my questions and clear up my confusion? I'd appreciate it so much!
    Karen

Does FCE do this with multiple cameras? I'd want to make sure that FCS does it, before I buy it and am stuck with it, especially if FCE will do it and I already have it.
    Yes and No
No - Multicamera is a function in FC Pro
Yes - but You do it in a very "Paper-clip" way. Put each Camera on one track ontop of each other
    Camera 1 - v-tr 1
    Camera 2 - v-tr 2
    Camera 3 - v-tr 3
Then schrink the view of each track to 25% with Vireframe and put them into one corner
    each (Not the same one)
Move them so that the sync. frame eg a photo flash is on the same time for all three video-tracks.
Now when playing one see the three views in paralell.
THIS demands that all Cameras has a common Sync-point (I use a photo-flash)
AND that no Camera was turned off during uptake.
IT is also important to know if any of the Cameras are sencitive to movements.
    My small one is.
So I put mine on tripods !
This recording behaviour is the same if using FinalCut Pro ! Cont. recording and one sync. frame.
Then when playing in FinalCut Express - one use the transparicy tool to make the
Camera visibly that has the best picture.
When done the full movie (by adjusting transparicy - one re-size the Video tracks to 100% and let them fill view.
Now when playback - You see the edited result.
In FC Pro - You set Your Cameras as Multi Camera and set the sync frame. Now it will
in Viewer play (in 25% size) and You just point at the best view trough the movie
and it will assemble in TimeLine. You need not to be especially on target - easily adjusted
with roll-tool (I think) in after hand.
1 hour editing two Cameras takes for me (ME)
    • FinalCut Express - about 10 hours
    • FinalCut Pro - 2 hours to Capture - 1h15min to edit.
There is a program - CaptureMagic SD (HD) - that let's You copy directly to Your Mac
hard disk - NEED is one FW-port per Camera
(Port is something else than the connectors, My PowerBook G4 has one FW400 and one FW800 connector
    BUT ONLY one FW-port - So I need to use a CMA-CIA-card with one FW-connector to get a second FW-port )
This set-up works and I get the material Captured in real-time. Resulting in editing time 1h 15min per hour movie.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Check for MPL status

Hi. Is there an easy way to check if MPL is currently up or down? Is there a table in the database that can tell this status?
We have a file upload process that are automatically picked up by MPL and loaded in staging tables.
    Thank you.

I am looking for this information as well, and spl.sh -m isup doesn't work. At least not on Red Hat Linux. This is the output I see here:
    *$ spl.sh -m isup*
    *111026.11:24:12 <info> Startup/Shutdown logs will go to /spl/CCB231DEV/logs/system/spl.sh.log*
    *$*
And the log basically parrots that same info. Any idea on a way to check in this case? I want to be notified if the service drops for any reason, and either attempt to restart it automatically or manually.

  • Understanding Aggregation for Hierarchies

    Hi:
    OBIEE 11.1.1.6.5
I'm trying to understand aggregation in the context of a dimension's hierarchy. When I create a level-based hierarchy for a dimension there are two places to set the aggregation level. The first is on the source for the dimension table, the other is the source for the joined fact table. My question is, what is/are the purposes for these two options? When would I set one over the other? Currently, it seems to get the aggregation to work, I'm setting the level on the dimension table source and not the fact source. Is this the correct way?
    Any insights are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
The purpose of setting the aggregation levels on dim/fact is to let BI server know which LTS to pickup for the user's requested report criteria.
If you have one aggregated table that has data at month level and another base table that has data at day level.
In this case, you will set the content level for time hierarchy as month_ level (since that is the lowest level of granularity present in the table) for the aggregate table
and then you will set the content level for time hierarchy as DAY_ level (since that is the lowest level of granularity present in the table) for the base table.
If you run a report quarterly, BI server looks in both LTSes above and chooses the aggregated table which will give you better performance.
    Thanks,
    Rajesh Gurram

  • 7600 as Backbone router for MPLS core

I have 7600's and 7500's in my backbone and 7200's on the edge. My question is that when I look at the feature navigator the 7600 with Sup 720 is missing a lot of basic features required to be a core router of an MPLS Backbone. Features like Traffic engineering fast reroute, MPLS enabled Netflow are missing on this platform, is this platform not a good candidate to be a Backbone router for a service provider offering MPLS services??? 7500 on the other hand it seems 7500 seems to have support for the MPLS related features.
