Understanding Pantone and Reproduction

Hi,
I'm starting to do a lot of print collateral at work, and just have a few questions to make sure I understand things correctly.
At the moment, I'm designing some letterhead. I'm using spot colors for this, specifically Pantone 426M, which comes from our new style guide. Now, in CS6, there are no "Matte" swatch books available, there is only Pantone+ Coated and Uncoated (excluding all the metallics, CMYK, et cetera). In order to actually get the 426M, I have to cut and paste a piece of geometry from the style guide and pull it in to InDesign or Illustrator to be able to have a swatch that is specifically "426M." So, question 1) Is the Pantone Matte color book a legacy library I can load in some how? Or 2) Is Pantone+ Uncoated/Coated the way to roll at this point?
Also, in the attached image, I have a DRASTIC shift in 426 swatches in both 426U and 426C. One is about a 65% grey, the other is closer 95%, respectively. As I understand it, the actual ink in 426 is the same, but because of the substrate, they will appear differently. Is that correct? If not, what else would explain the drastic shift?
Thanks,
Mike

I just took a look at my Pantone printed swatch books.  I have the matte paper reference guide, but interestingly, the color name is 426C not 426M.  Now, I also looked up the reference color in the uncoated book and the coated book.  The darkest sample is found in the coated book, the next closest version to the coated is the matte which only slightly lighter than the coated version.  This differs from your diagram above where you have 426M as the darkest color.  Now, my uncoated sample is similar to yours and looks a bit off because it is not even close to the matte and/or the coated versions.  This could be an error ( nobody's perfect and that includes Pantone ).  That said, all Spot formulas for 426 are exactly the same ( 12pts Pantone Black; 4pts Pantone Reflex Blue ).  So, it may not be important to use the Pantone 426M reference swatch via older applications.  Again, Pantone shows a reference name in their matte paper sampler as 426C, not 426M.  The uncoated version is named 426U.  Now, it is possible that that Pantone spot color formula could very well print lighter on uncoated paper and it may be an artifact you have to live with.  The alternative is finding another uncoated swatch that matches closer to the coated and matte versions...like a Pantone 7547U, but it appears all uncoated colors are much weaker than the 426C.  And, looking at their printed guides, Pantone 424C = 3pts Pantone Black, 1pt Pantone Reflex Blue, 14pts Pantone transparent White; Pantone 425C = 6pts Pantone Black, 2pts Pantone Reflex Blue, 8pts Pantone Transp. White; Pantone 426C = 12pts Pantone Black, 4pts Pantone Reflex Blue and no transparent White.  The formula doubles with each number in the zone, but I wonder if they added a transparent White of 3pts it would lighten the 426C more in lie with the color zone in their printed sampler book.  You might want to ask Pantone if their formula is correct and why they didn't retain any White in the formula for 426C as it is in 424C and 425C.

  • I do not understand iPhoto and/or Photo Stream, help me?

    I do not understand iPhoto to say the least. I've imported my photos which I have stored on an external networked hard drive. However after they've been uploaded to the iPhoto library, I've got NUMEROUS duplicates which seem to be showing as different events even though they are the same photo.
    Another thing is that in Photo Stream which I have turned on my iPhone 4, I seem to have photos showing up in there that have nothing to do with a photo I've taken on my iPhone or manually dragged them to Photo Stream. They are mostly some old photos that I've NEVER had on my iPhone at all. How did they get there. My photos that I've taken with the phone or saved on my Iphone are there just like I was expecting but most of these photos, and this is while I'm on my iMac, are just a bunch of random photos. I don't even know how to delete these photos in Photo Stream to try and start over.
    Could someone help me understand iPhoto and/or Photo Stream, these are two different questions please!

    Is there a specific file that iPhoto makes and stores on my computer or the external drive that has the iPhoto library? I want to delete all instances of it and try reloading my library.
    Also, how do I reload or start fresh a Photo Stream library on my computer? What's weird is that the photos on my iMac are not what's on my iPhone. I mean I have the ones that are on my iPHone are within the iPhoto's Photo Stream but then there is also a bunch of other photos that I have no idea how they got there.

  • Help on assignment, don't understand JOptionPane and showInputDialog

    Hi, I am currently studying java and have problems doing my assignment. here is the assignment question. What I am looking for is pointers and hints to start on my assignment. I am not looking for the source code, rather the way to actually understand it and start writting my code
    I believe this assignment wanted me to create a class Object called Zeller with the methods in it and a ZellerTester to test the Object?
    I read up on the JOptionPane and the showInputDialog, but don't really quite understand it.
    Do i need a constructor for the Object Zeller?
    Does my assignment require me to put the showInputDialog as a method in the Zeller class? Or put it in the ZellerTester?
    The isLeapYear is a method in the Object Zeller?
    Here is the assignment question
    Examine the method
    showInputDialog() and study its function. Note the return type of this method.
    Write a program on the following requirements:
    1. Use the JOptionPane facility to ask the user for three positive integers,
    representing the day, month and year of a date.
    2. Use the Zellers congruence formula to find the day of the week.
    3. Should include a method boolean isLeapYear(int year)
    that will return true if year is a leap year, and false otherwise.
    The method should check for leap years as follow:
    return true if the year is divisible by 400.
    return true if the year is divisible by 4 but not by 100
    return false for the remaining values
    Thank you.

    I can't seems to return the method back to the main
    Not sure where has gone wrong...
    here is my code
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class ZellerTester
        public static void main(String[]args)
        int day  = 28;
        int month = 2;
        int year = 2007;
        int z;
        boolean isLeapYear;
        String[] displayName = {"Sun", "Mon", "Tue", "Wed", "Thu", "Fri", "Sat"};
        if(month==1 || month==2) {
            if (isLeapYear = false)
                day = day-1;
              else
                day = day-2;
        if(month<3)
            month = month + 12;
        z = (1 + day + (month * 2) + (3 * (month + 1) / 5) +
             year + year / 4 + year / 400 - year/ 100) % 7;
        System.out.println("The day is " +displayName[z]);
    public boolean isLeapYear(int year)
           if (year%400 == 0)
               return true;
           else if((year%4 == 0) && (year%100 != 0))
                return true;
           else
                 return false;

    I understand the partition by which means basically for each associated group a unique number wiill be assigned for that row, so in this case since tester is one group, manager is another group, and programmer is another group then tester gets its own unique number for each row, manager as well and etc.What is throwing me off is the order by and how this numbering are assigned. why is
    1 assigned to Alison Mathews for the tester group and 2 assigned to James Cat and 3 assigned Robert Black
    I apologize if this is a stupid question, i have tried reading about it online and looking at the oracle documentation but that still dont fully understand why.

    1 assigned to Alison Mathews for the tester group and 2 assigned to James Cat and 3 assigned Robert Black That's determined by the analytic ORDER BY clause. Yiou said "ORDER BY city desc", so a row where city='Vancouver' will get a lower namber than one where city='New York', since 'Vancouver' comes after 'New York' in alphabetic order.
    If you have several rows that all have the same city, then you can be sure that ROW_NUMBER will assign them consecutive numbers, but it's arbitrary which one of them will be lowest and which highest. For example, you have 5 'Tester's: 4 from Vancouver and 1 from New York. There's no particular reason why the one with first_name='Alison' got assinge 1, and 'James' got #2. If you run the same query again, without changing the table at all, then 'Robert' might be #1. It's certain that the 4 Vancouver rows will be assigned numbers 1 through 4, but there's no way of telling which of those 4 rows will get which of those 4 numbers.
    Similar to a query's ORDER BY clause, the analytic ORDER BY clause can have two or more expressions. The N-th one will only be considered if there was a tie for all (N-1) earlier ones. For example "ORDER BY city DESC, last_name, first_name" would mena 'Vancouver' comes before 'New York', but, if multiple rows all have city='Vancouver', last_name would determine the order: 'Black' would get a lower number than 'Cat'. If you had multiple rows with city='Vancouver' and last_name='Black', then the order would be determined by first_name.

    Thank you Kappy
    as it's said:
    "If a thread tries to unlock theLock, but it’s already unlocked, undesirable things may happen"
    Undesirable things happen because it crash my application all the time. As I'm no developer either, I'm trying to understand what can cause this conflict (If it's something in my OS X or indesign configuration), but such logs seems too difficult for common user to undertand).
    I've read that somewhere in the apple developer site too. I think that's what append here.
    I'm wondering if it's not coming from the "adobe registration frameworks" (I've no idea what it is) because my crash logs mention this quite often.
    I've also read that KERN INVALID ADDRESS can be cause by bad RAM, but I've test it with TechTool Deluxe/Rember, seems ok.
    Thanks anyway,

  • Understanding ERM and CUP integration in AC 10.0

    Iu2019m reaching out in hopes to get a better understanding of how AC 10.0 is meant to handle the ERM and CUP integration (Iu2019m still stuck on the old names :).  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Currently, we have a requirement to setup the GRC Production box so it can provision user access in the Production ECC but create security roles in Development ECC.  This is typically what we see since most clients want to follow their manual transport process to get the security roles from Dev --> QA --> Prod.
    Something I noticed in CUP is when a user adds a role to the request form u2013 the role is associated to a system (i.e. Production ECC or Development ECC).  If we create a role using ERM and it only gets generated in Development ECC u2013 will we be able to select this role in CUP for user assignment in Production ECC? (assuming itu2019s been transported outside of GRC)
    Note: At this point the new role will only be associated to Development ECC from a GRC perspective?  So if we assign it in CUP u2013 it will only be associated to Development ECC...?
    Do we have to manually perform another u201Crole import / syncu201D from the Production ECC to sync the roles so theyu2019re available in CUP?
    This is based on the understanding that CUP looks for available roles for assignment from ERM rather than the Production ECC.  Is that correct?  Can we have CUP look in the backend rather than ERM?
    My question is around the manual u201Crole import / syncu201D that needs to get performed for CUP.  Is this really mandatory based on the requirements?  It would mean I need to perform a u201Crole import / syncu201D every time a new role is created/deleted/changedu2026  Maybe Iu2019m missing something with the new 10.0 integration / functionality?  Are other companies doing something different?
    Please let me know what you think.  Your insight is greatly appreciated!

    Frank,
    Thanks for clarifying.
    Can you clarify what you mean when you say "you just need to tell CUP that the roles are available in PRD"? What does this mean?
    This goes back to the original question - do we need to perform another import of the roles from ECC PRD to ERM? My understanding is that the ERM role repository is looking at my original import of roles and then each role I create using ERM after that. How will it know which roles are in PRD if I don't do a routine synch?
    Also, you mentioned "each role has attributes that define in which systems it should be available for requests", where does this get defined? I believe you are referring to the "Role Status" which is set to Development, Production or Testing. I only see the ability to set this during the Role Import, but what about roles which have been created using ERM. I don't see it in the Role details screen - where is the setting?

  • Need help understanding profiles and color management

    I made the big leap from inexpensive inkjets to:
    1 Epson 3800 Standard
    2 Spyder3Studio
    I have a Mac Pro Quad, Aperture, PS3, etc.
    I have a steep learning curve ahead, here's what I've done:
    1 Read a lot of books, watched tutorials, etc.
    2 Calibrated the monitor
    3 Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
    What I've found:
    1 The sample print produced by Spyder3Print, using the profile I created with color management turned off in the print dialog, looks very good.
    2 When I get into Aperture, and apply the .icc profile I created in the proofing profile with onscreen proofing, the onscreen image does not change appreciably compared with the no proof setting. It gets slightly darker
    3 When I select File>Print image, select the profile I created, turn off color management and look a the resulting preview image it looks much lighter and washed out than the onscreen image with onscreen proofing turned on.
    4 When I print the image, it looks the same as was shown in the print preview...light and washed out, which is much different than what is shown in edit mode.
    5 When I open PS3 with onscreen soft-proofing, the onscreen image is light and washed out...just like displayed in PS3 preview. If I re-edit the image to look OK onscreen, and print with the profile and color management turned off, the printed image looks OK.
    So, why am I confused?
    1 In the back of my simplistic and naive mind, I anticipated that in creating a custom printer profile I would only need to edit a photo once, so it looks good on the calibrated screen, and then a custom printer profile will handle the work to print a good looking photo. Different profiles do different translations for different printers/papers. However, judging by the PS work, it appears I need to re-edit a photo for each printer/paper I encounter...just doesn't seem right.
    2 In Aperture, I'm confused by the onscreen proofing does not present the same image as what I see in the print preview. I'm selecting the same .icc profile in both locations.
    I tried visiting with Spyder support, but am not able to explain myself well enough to help them understand what I'm doing wrong.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
    You have understand that maintaining the colour is done by morphing the colourants, and you have understood that matching the digital graphic display (which is emissive) to the print from the digital graphic printer (which is reflective) presupposes a studio lighting situation that simulates the conditions presupposed in the mathematical illuminant model for media independent matching. Basically, for a display-to-print match you need to calibrate and characterise the display to something like 5000-55000 kelvin. There are all sorts of arguments surrounding this, and you will find your way through them in time, but you now have the gist of the thing.
    So far so good, but what of the problem posed by the digital graphic printer? If you are a professional photographer, you are dependent on your printer for contract proofing. Your prints you can pass to clients and to printers, but your display you cannot. So this is critical.
    The ICC Specification was published at DRUPA Druck und Papier in Düsseldorf in May 1995 and ColorSync 2 Golden Master is on the WWDC CD for May 1995. Between 1995 and 2000 die reine Lehre said to render your colour patch chart in the raw condition of the colour device.
    The problem with this is that in a separation the reflectance of the paper (which is how you get to see the colours of the colourants laid down on top of the paper) and the amount of colourant (solid and combinations of tints) gives you the gamut.
    By this argument, you would want to render the colour patch chart with the most colourant, but what if the most colourant produces artifacts? A safer solution is to have primary ink limiting as part of the calibration process prior to rendering of the colour patch chart.
    You can see the progression e.g. in the BEST RIP which since 2002 has been owned by EFI Electronics for Imaging. BEST started by allowing access to the raw colour device, with pooling problems and whatnot, but then introduced a primary ink limiting and linearisation.
    The next thing you need to know is what colour test chart to send to the colour device, depending on whether the colour device is considered an RGB device or a CMYK device. By convention, if the device is not driven by a PostScript RIP it is considered an RGB device.
    The colour patch chart is not tagged, meaning that it is deviceColor and neither CIEBased colour or ICCBased colour. You need to keep your colour patch chart deviceColor or you will have a colour characterisation of a colour managed conversion. Which is not what you want.
    If the operating system is colour managed through and through, how do you render a colour test chart without automatically assigning a source ICC profile for the colourant model (Generic RGB Profile for three component, Generic CMYK Profile for four component)?
    The convention is that no colour conversion occurs if the source ICC device profile and the destination ICC device profile are identical. So if you are targetting your inkjet in RGB mode, you open an RGB colourant patch chart, set the source ICC profile for the working space to the same as the destination ICC profile for the device, and render as deviceColor.
    You then leave the rendered colourant test chart to dry for one hour. If you measure a colourant test chart every ten minutes through the first hour, you may find that the soluble inkjet inks in drying change colour. If you wait, you avoid this cause of error in your characterisation.
    As you will mainly want to work with loose photographs, and not with photographs placed in pages, when you produce a contract proof using Absolute Colorimetric rendering from the ICC profile for the printing condition to the ICC profile for your studio printer, here's a tip.
    Your eyes, the eyes of your client, and the eyes of the prepress production manager will see the white white of the surrounding unprinted margins of the paper, and will judge the printed area of the paper relative to that.
    If, therefore, your untrimmed contract proof and the contract proof from Adobe InDesign or QuarkPress, or a EFI or other proofing RIP, are placed side by side in the viewing box your untrimmed contract proof will work as the visual reference for the media white.
    The measured reference for the media white is in the ICC profile for the printing condition, to be precise in the WTPT White Point tag that you can see by doubleclicking the ICC profile in the Apple ColorSync Utility. This is the lightness and tint laid down on proof prints.
    You, your client and your chosen printer will get on well if you remember to set up your studio lighting, and trim the blank borders of your proof prints. (Another tip: set your Finder to neutral gray and avoid a clutter of white windows, icons and so forth in the Finder when viewing.)
    So far, so good. This leaves the nittygritty of specific ICC profiling packages and specific ICC-enabled applications. As for Aperture, do not apply a gamma correction to your colourant patch chart, or to colour managed printing.
    As for Adobe applications, which you say you will be comparing with, you should probably be aware that Adobe InDesign CS3 has problems. When targetting an RGB printing device, the prints are not correctly colour managed, but basically bypass colour management.
    There's been a discussion on the Apple ColorSync Users List and on Adobe's fora, see the two threads below.
    Hope this helps,

  • Trying to understand ViewStack and child creation

    I'm trying to work with the ViewStack, but keep on getting error 1009, which means that the object I'm trying to use is not created yet. I just dont understand why the object is not created and at which point will it get created.
    The attached code demonstrates my case. First time the combo box is changed, the error is reported and the value of t1.text is not changed. The second time the combo box is changed, the value changes, as it should.
    Now the question is, why is the object null on the first call? How to initialize the value and avoid this problem?
    Thanks.

  • Trying to understand creating and using packages

    Hi all,
    I do not understand this problem... Package "shared.utilities" is an entire separate package from "alertsystem". When I comment out "package alertsystem", I get C:\Wdt\alertsystem\File_Handling.java:4: package shared.utilities does not exist
    import shared.utilities.*;
    ^
    Below is the code
    // package alertsystem;
    import shared.utilities.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.text.*;
    class File_Handling
         private long time_buff;
         private String alertDir;
         private String archPath;
         private SData buff;
    On the other hand, if I do NOT comment out "package alertsystem", no problem. I do not understand why I need to include "package alertsystem". If I am writing a simple module and want to use one of the library in "shared.utilities", do I always need to make sure all my codes come under a package?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    This is funny... if I do this....
    package alertsystem;
    import shared.utilities.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.text.*;
    class File_Handling
         private long time_buff;
         private String alertDir;
    without including the path to the jar file, NO PROBLEM during compilation and run (in this case, util.jar, which is actually the shared.utilities package). But, if I do
    // package alertsystem;
    import shared.utilities.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.text.*;
    I still get the same error problem...
    C:\Wdt\alertsystem\File_Handling.java:4: package shared.utilities does not exist
    import shared.utilities.*;
    In other words, if I include or I do not include the path of to the jar file and do this...
    package alertsystem;
    import shared.utilities.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.text.*;
    Then, No problem with compilation and running. However, if I do not include "package alertsystem", I get compilation problem.
    The jar file consists only of *.class files that I have compiled without a single problem. I included "package shared.utilities;" in all the files of the util.jar
    Funny isn't it?
    Thanks for responding.
    Hi,
    What's your classpath look like when you compile when
    you include the package and when you don't include the
    package? Is it when you compile or run the code?

  • Trying to understand Bill and exact dates of Fees.

    I am trying to figure out my bill. In particular why I am getting charged the Reconnect Fees when my phones were not disconnected this time.
    How do I tell when the reconnect fee was applied and for what billing period? I would like to know if the fees were from a past due or this current period.
    Is there a place where I can see the exact dates when the fees were applied? As of right now I know that we get charged a month ahead for each period but when I look at the bill it only shows the month behind. For example today is January 31 and my billing period when I view my bill on the website says December 27th, 2012 - January 26th, 2013. My past due amount which I just paid was the correct amount for not having the reconnect fee and but my remaining amount is showing the reconnect fee. I want to know if the reconnect fee is listed there from the month before, December, or if it is for the month of January. I do not remember my phones being turned off when I last paid the bill at the at the end of last December. I got the text message that my bill was due and I paid it. That is why I would like to know the exact date in which the fees were applied. Right now it looks as if it is being applied to the January billing period. Unless I am wrong and I was disconnected.
    If you all do not list the exact dates can you think about doing so? It would be a lot more helpful in understanding the bill when looking at it if we know the exact dates in which certain things are being applied. Right now the summary we get is a bit confusing as it is.

    Thanks tikibar1 that View Printable Bill helped a bit.

  • Trying to Understand Login and State Management

    Hi,
    I'm relatively new to Flex 3.  I'm using the builder.
    Here's my core problem.  I'm coming from a ColdFusion background, where users run to the server for any type of authentication and sessions rule until they're timed out.
    My goal is to understand how ColdFusion (with a SQL Server backend) and Flex work together to help a user login and helps that same user maintain it's state.
    I understand so far that Flex can use a RemoteObject to go back and use ColdFusion services to authenticate a user.  I'd like to go this route.
    My problem is understanding how does Flex maintains information about the particular logged in user.  Am I correct in thinking that once I return information from ColdFusion about the user, I create a global object in Flex that keeps the user's information that I can refer to as I transition between the View States (states) in my Flex application?  And I can just refer to that local user object if I need to make sure I'm still dealing with the same user?
    Is it really that simple?  Also, I've had been trying to review COUNTLESS articles on the Login/Authentication process.  One that I came across suggested placing a UUID on the server for a particular logged in user, and then I just return that back to Flex.  Does anyone recommend that?  I know that when I used sessions in ColdFusion, the server did this, so I'm not sure which routes to take.
    By the way, I'm designing an Intranet that's only accessible from our internal network, but I want my colleagues to be able to login securely.  And like I said before, I'm using  ColdFusion (and CF services), SQL Server, and Flex 3.
    I'm teaching myself Flex through the Video Training - Flex 3, but haven't seen much on this yet.  If someone could provide a good outline of the Best Practices to Login, Authenticate, and Maintain Session State throughout a Flex Application (using a ColdFusion and SQL Server backend), I'd be highly appreciative.
    Thanks!
    mfho

    Hi,
    Thanks for responding.
    Here's one solution I found located on http://www.blogna.org/blog/adobe-flash/flex-and-flash-rias-authentication-sessions-scalabi lity/#comment-843
    A user submits their username and password inside a Flex form.
    ColdFusion Server receives the username and password and verifies them against the users in a database.
    If the user is valid, A KEY IS CREATED, stored in the database with a time stamp, then sent back to the user.
    The key is stored in a local variable inside the Flex application.
    Now, any time the application needs to retrieve data from a service that requires the user to be logged in, it will pass the key with the request. So, instead of a method like getUserInfo(), now it will look like getUserInfo(key).
    The service will use the key to determine if the user is authenticated, and if they are, it will send back the appropriate data.
    Here are my questions:
    1.  Do I have to have a key sent back to Flex?  Can't I just pull all of the data for that particular user at the time and send it back to Flex?
    I guess I'm not understanding first why I need a key or session id from ColdFusion, but if I do, I guess I could create it using the CreateUUID() in ColdFusion, send it back to Flex, store it in a local var and then reference that each time I needed to do something that's user sensitive.
    Would that work?
    I guess I'd prefer not to use a session ID if I don't have to.
    Thanks!
    mfho1

  • I don't understand ul and li

    Hi, 20 qiestions from me tonight!
    . sorry bout that.
    I'm trying to get to grips with unordered lists. I want to
    make my menu bar a list, so in dreamweaver i higlighted severl ines
    of text and clicked the list button, and sure enough it made a
    list, but i wanted to get ride of the bullets and the margin, so i
    wrapped it all in div: #designmenulist. Then i made the adjustments
    but nothing happened. So i looked at some code i was given earlier
    (from anthor topic i started) and noticed the list div ended in
    "ul". So i retyped in the code view my div to be called:
    #designmenulist ul. and now the changes are applied! i'm not sure i
    understand why this works. And now the code for my div reads:
    <div id="designmenulist">
    <ul>
    <li>Year 1</li>
    <li>Misc projects</li>
    <li>Helicopter</li>
    <li>Year 2</li>
    <li>Airline seat</li>
    <li>Departure lounge</li>
    <li>Entertainment system</li>
    <li>Year 3</li>
    <li>Transport interchange</li>
    <li>Delivery van</li>
    <li>Placement</li>
    <li>Year 4</li>
    <li>Drum kit</li>
    <li>Cockpit </li>
    </ul>
    </div>
    but in my global.css, #designmenulist doesn't exist, only
    #designmenulist ul. but it still works. this puzzles me.
    Also, do i need a #designmenulist li? and what does that do?
    Thanks, Mark

    Consider the tags to be boxes within boxes. ul is "unordered
    list" (as
    opposed to ordered list, which items start with 1. 2. etc.)
    "li" means line
    item and within each unordered list (between the ul and the
    /ul, you could
    have any number of li and /li pairs.
    If the div is designlist then anything you applied to
    #designlist would
    reference the whole div. If you want something (say a margin)
    on the
    unordered list itself (the ul) .. you would apply it to
    #designlist ul which
    means the ul that is contained in div designlist.
    But if you wanted something like padding on each item within
    the unordered
    list .. you would apply it to #designlist ul li .. which
    means the li within
    the ul within designlist and those rules are just for those
    list items
    within that list within that div.
    Make sense?

  • Don't understand cffunction and cfcomponent

    I am trying to alter Forta's ajax related select tutorial to fit my needs.  I am having trouble understanding the details of this .cfc though.
    <cfcomponent output="false">
        <!--- Get array of media types --->
        <cffunction name="get_states" access="remote" returnType="array">
            <cfset data="">
            <cfset result=ArrayNew(2)>
            <cfset i=0>
            <!--- Get data --->
            <cfquery name="data" datasource="mydsn">
            SELECT id,states
            FROM state
            </cfquery>
            <!--- Convert results to array --->
            <cfloop index="i" from="1" to="#data.RecordCount#">
                <cfset result[i][1]=data.id[i]>
                <cfset result[i][2]=data.state[i]>
            </cfloop>
            <cfreturn result>
        </cffunction>
        <!--- Get art by media type --->
        <cffunction name="get_waters" access="remote" returnType="array">
            <cfargument name="location" type="string" required="true" default="">
            <!--- Define variables --->
            <cfset var data="">
            <cfset var result=ArrayNew(2)>
            <cfset var i=0>
            <!--- Get data --->
            <cfquery name="data" datasource="mydsn">
            SELECT id,name
            FROM waters
            WHERE bow_state = '#arguments.location#'
            </cfquery>
            <!--- Convert results to array --->
            <cfloop index="i" from="1" to="#data.RecordCount#">
                <cfset result[i][1]=data.id[i]>
                <cfset result[i][2]=data.name[i]>
            </cfloop>
            <!--- And return it --->
            <cfreturn result>
        </cffunction>
    </cfcomponent>
    When I put '#arguments.id#' into the second query, I get results.  However, I'd like to query by the name instead, so I am trying location.  I don't fully understand so I am hacking around with this a bit but I'd like to 1 - get results by name instead of id and 2 - understand the arguments variable so I really know what is going on.
    Thanks!

    Sorry, didn't see this before I posted.
    But I think my suggestion was in keeping with the example.  If you need to select on "state", then make the "state" column of your first query to be the first value in the array that you return:
    <!--- Get data --->
    <cfquery name="data" datasource="mydsn">
         SELECT id,states
         FROM state
    </cfquery>
    <!--- Convert results to array --->
    <cfloop index="i" from="1" to="#data.RecordCount#">
         <cfset result[i][1]=data.state[i]>
         <cfset result[i][2]=data.state[i]>
    </cfloop>
    This will make your select look something like this in the rendered HTML:
    <select id="states" name="whatever...">
         <option value="Alabama">Alabama</option>
         <option value="Alaska">Alaska</option>
    </select>
    So then, on your second, dependent select, you'd specify the binding like so (just like you did, really):
    <cfselect name="waters" bind="cfc:_ffc_cfc_select_jump.get_waters({states})" bindonload="false"></cfselect>
    However, now, because the value of the "states" select options are state names, rather than ids, you should now be able to use the argument in your query based on state names:
    <!--- Get art by media type --->
    <cffunction name="get_waters" access="remote" returnType="array">
         <cfargument name="location" type="string" required="true" default="">
         <!--- Define variables --->
         <cfset var data="">
         <cfset var result=ArrayNew(2)>

  • Understanding ColorSync and printing set-up

    I have spent two days hunting round the net for a simple understanding of how to set up my Konica Minolta Magicolor 5450 printer and my G5 Dual so they can work happily together to produce the outpt I need, specifically in relation to greys (currently coming out as various shades of pink!). I've had to digest a lot of high tech stuff and have a kind of overview on what the issues are. However, I really need much simpler terminology to help me trouble shoot. Is there a good, comprehensive but less scientific source that will explain how I can resolve the gamuts involved and get my greys to be grey not pink?

    The simple anwser is most people are not sure how to explain "color" because it's something a little different to each person and it is a complicated process.
    You're tweaking light.
    When your trying to get your printer to print grays from Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black, you need to be able to recognize if your printing only black, or are the other colors involved. This is usually determined by your application and the printer driver being used.
    Gray balence is a very critical balence because any one of the 3 colors can sway the "gray balence".
    Too much Magenta is typical.
    You can adjust your monitor to look like what your printer will print is one way to start. Make your work look good on the monitor and it should print okay. Remember your monitor is showing you RGB and the printer is printing CMYK.
    This is not a good way to handle this.
    --OR--
    You can use the ICC profiles already made (or should come with your Konika printer) and use those in the applications' preferences to set up with. Remeber ICC's are color-space specific as in one for an RGB monitor and a CMYK one for the printing device.
    ICC profiles are used to control the intent for an output device to represent what the image will look like a printing press, or a proofing device, or a monitor, etc.
    You're trying to get 2 different things to match in 2 different color spaces.
    I've worked for printing companies over 20 years and this is not an "easy anwser" question because of all the variables.
