Understanding Profiles

Hello all
I have been experimenting with shooting a 24 patch colour chart, using DNG profile editor to create dual illuminent camera profiles for a Canon 1Ds mark II.
Seems to work nicely, but what I would like to know is what the supplied Adobe profiles in Camera Raw offer? "Faithful" "Neutral" etc, and even the "Adobe Standard"
Is there any documentation online describing how these profiles have been built? I would have thought Adobe would have profiled cameras in the same way I am, but none of the supplied profiles seem to match the ones I have created.
Thanks,
Elliot

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you what process is used to create the Adobe Standard profile. I don't use that profile very often with my cameras anyway. But since I had such limited success using the DNG Profile Creator, I have obtained better results by simply creating a few presets that compensate for special lighting situations. I use a Nikon D90, and I have found that the Camera Neutral profile works best for me most of the time. Occasionally I will use one of the other camera matching profiles. With my limited knowledge of creating my own profiles, I find I get much better results using my method.
The DNG Profile Creator, I think, can be of greatest value when you have a special lighting situation. And since most of my pictures are either flash pictures of my family or outdoor scenic photographs, I have found that my attempts using the Profile Creator have simply been a waste of my time. I know that others have a lot of success with it.

  • Need help understanding profiles and color management

I made the big leap from inexpensive inkjets to:
    1 Epson 3800 Standard
    2 Spyder3Studio
I have a Mac Pro Quad, Aperture, PS3, etc.
I have a steep learning curve ahead, here's what I've done:
1 Read a lot of books, watched tutorials, etc.
    2 Calibrated the monitor
3 Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
    What I've found:
1 The sample print produced by Spyder3Print, using the profile I created with color management turned off in the print dialog, looks very good.
2 When I get into Aperture, and apply the .icc profile I created in the proofing profile with onscreen proofing, the onscreen image does not change appreciably compared with the no proof setting. It gets slightly darker
3 When I select File>Print image, select the profile I created, turn off color management and look a the resulting preview image it looks much lighter and washed out than the onscreen image with onscreen proofing turned on.
4 When I print the image, it looks the same as was shown in the print preview...light and washed out, which is much different than what is shown in edit mode.
5 When I open PS3 with onscreen soft-proofing, the onscreen image is light and washed out...just like displayed in PS3 preview. If I re-edit the image to look OK onscreen, and print with the profile and color management turned off, the printed image looks OK.
    So, why am I confused?
1 In the back of my simplistic and naive mind, I anticipated that in creating a custom printer profile I would only need to edit a photo once, so it looks good on the calibrated screen, and then a custom printer profile will handle the work to print a good looking photo. Different profiles do different translations for different printers/papers. However, judging by the PS work, it appears I need to re-edit a photo for each printer/paper I encounter...just doesn't seem right.
2 In Aperture, I'm confused by the onscreen proofing does not present the same image as what I see in the print preview. I'm selecting the same .icc profile in both locations.
I tried visiting with Spyder support, but am not able to explain myself well enough to help them understand what I'm doing wrong.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Calibrated the printer several times and created .icc profiles
You have understand that maintaining the colour is done by morphing the colourants, and you have understood that matching the digital graphic display (which is emissive) to the print from the digital graphic printer (which is reflective) presupposes a studio lighting situation that simulates the conditions presupposed in the mathematical illuminant model for media independent matching. Basically, for a display-to-print match you need to calibrate and characterise the display to something like 5000-55000 kelvin. There are all sorts of arguments surrounding this, and you will find your way through them in time, but you now have the gist of the thing.
So far so good, but what of the problem posed by the digital graphic printer? If you are a professional photographer, you are dependent on your printer for contract proofing. Your prints you can pass to clients and to printers, but your display you cannot. So this is critical.
The ICC Specification was published at DRUPA Druck und Papier in Düsseldorf in May 1995 and ColorSync 2 Golden Master is on the WWDC CD for May 1995. Between 1995 and 2000 die reine Lehre said to render your colour patch chart in the raw condition of the colour device.
The problem with this is that in a separation the reflectance of the paper (which is how you get to see the colours of the colourants laid down on top of the paper) and the amount of colourant (solid and combinations of tints) gives you the gamut.
By this argument, you would want to render the colour patch chart with the most colourant, but what if the most colourant produces artifacts? A safer solution is to have primary ink limiting as part of the calibration process prior to rendering of the colour patch chart.
You can see the progression e.g. in the BEST RIP which since 2002 has been owned by EFI Electronics for Imaging. BEST started by allowing access to the raw colour device, with pooling problems and whatnot, but then introduced a primary ink limiting and linearisation.
The next thing you need to know is what colour test chart to send to the colour device, depending on whether the colour device is considered an RGB device or a CMYK device. By convention, if the device is not driven by a PostScript RIP it is considered an RGB device.
The colour patch chart is not tagged, meaning that it is deviceColor and neither CIEBased colour or ICCBased colour. You need to keep your colour patch chart deviceColor or you will have a colour characterisation of a colour managed conversion. Which is not what you want.
If the operating system is colour managed through and through, how do you render a colour test chart without automatically assigning a source ICC profile for the colourant model (Generic RGB Profile for three component, Generic CMYK Profile for four component)?
The convention is that no colour conversion occurs if the source ICC device profile and the destination ICC device profile are identical. So if you are targetting your inkjet in RGB mode, you open an RGB colourant patch chart, set the source ICC profile for the working space to the same as the destination ICC profile for the device, and render as deviceColor.
You then leave the rendered colourant test chart to dry for one hour. If you measure a colourant test chart every ten minutes through the first hour, you may find that the soluble inkjet inks in drying change colour. If you wait, you avoid this cause of error in your characterisation.
As you will mainly want to work with loose photographs, and not with photographs placed in pages, when you produce a contract proof using Absolute Colorimetric rendering from the ICC profile for the printing condition to the ICC profile for your studio printer, here's a tip.
Your eyes, the eyes of your client, and the eyes of the prepress production manager will see the white white of the surrounding unprinted margins of the paper, and will judge the printed area of the paper relative to that.
If, therefore, your untrimmed contract proof and the contract proof from Adobe InDesign or QuarkPress, or a EFI or other proofing RIP, are placed side by side in the viewing box your untrimmed contract proof will work as the visual reference for the media white.
The measured reference for the media white is in the ICC profile for the printing condition, to be precise in the WTPT White Point tag that you can see by doubleclicking the ICC profile in the Apple ColorSync Utility. This is the lightness and tint laid down on proof prints.
You, your client and your chosen printer will get on well if you remember to set up your studio lighting, and trim the blank borders of your proof prints. (Another tip: set your Finder to neutral gray and avoid a clutter of white windows, icons and so forth in the Finder when viewing.)
So far, so good. This leaves the nittygritty of specific ICC profiling packages and specific ICC-enabled applications. As for Aperture, do not apply a gamma correction to your colourant patch chart, or to colour managed printing.
As for Adobe applications, which you say you will be comparing with, you should probably be aware that Adobe InDesign CS3 has problems. When targetting an RGB printing device, the prints are not correctly colour managed, but basically bypass colour management.
There's been a discussion on the Apple ColorSync Users List and on Adobe's fora, see the two threads below.
    Hope this helps,

  • 2012 R2 Need help understanding profiles/run as accounts

I'm new to SCOM, just installed 2012 R2, everything is set up.  Basically only 2 servers.
I've installed management packs for base OS, IIS, AD, Lync 2013, SQL.
The first thing after that I set up a run as account for email notifications.  In doing so I used an AD account but chose less secure.
I then created a notification channel, subscribers, and subscriptions.  It worked and I was getting emails because I bound by Notification action account to the notification account profile.  The problem in doing so is that now I got alerts on all
my DCs that the run as account does not exist on the target machine.  So in choosing "less secure" or "all targeted objects" on the run as account, it is trying to use that account for my notifications instead of the default.
So I started messing around with things, such as the run as accounts used for the notification account profile but things are just not working as expected.
Also for some reason the 3 Microsoft Lync Server Profiles have the network server windows account bound to them which I can't remove.
So in the end here is what I did for email alerts.  We have a seperate anonymous SMTP relay set up.  I created a new run as account called "notification action account" and chose an newly created AD account which is just a domain
user.  Inside of the distribution tab, I selected more secure but added the SCOM server itself because I don't have the agent installed on our open SMTP relay and it allows internal anonymous email. Under the Profiles, Notification Account I set the run
as account to the "Notification action account" I created, but still selected all targeted objects.  That seems to be working and I'm not getting alerts from my DCs about the account doesn't exist on the target.
I'm just not understanding why if you don't specify more secure and put in specific servers, it trys to use that account to connect to everything instead of using the default.

    Hi,
If you choose to distribute the Run as account to all the agents, all the workflows on the agents associates with this profile will use this account.

  • Aperture and export JPEG profiling

I've heard on a photo forum I go to regularly that there's some issue (at least to me it sounds like one) when JPEGs are exported out of Aperture.
Apparently the only way Aperture knows to do that is to assign a profile to exported file. Meaning that if the file is viewed through a software (Safari) which understands profiles, all is well, but if a software has no clue what a profile is than the images look rather flat and way different than when viewed in Aperture prior to export.
I am not using Aperture myself yet, but hope to get clarification on this as it just doesn't sound right that as good app as Aperture is would omit such a functionality especially considering Safari being the only color managed browser right now (maybe there's some other I am not aware of, but IE6 and firefox are not to my knowledge).
I agree that this is rather a flaw of all the other companies who were not yet been able to make their application color managed therefore not a flaw of Aperture. But the reality is that most people are not able to guarantee that their pictures will be only viewed through Safari.
    Thanks for your response.
    Regards
    Marek

Whenever Aperture exports a JPEG it doesn't just tag the output file with an ICC profile it also converts the RGB values accordingly. In other words, an image viewer can use the embedded ICC profile as a recipe for interpreting the RGB values in the file.
If you want to export for viewers that aren't colour space aware the best bet is using sRGB as your export profile. This (or something close) is what most "colour blind" web browsers assume when they render an image file.
Unfortunately, colour space aware browsers are few and far in between. This was the only reason for me to ditch my beloved Firefox and switch to Safari.
BTW, if you don't have Aperture but want to experiment with colour spaces and conversions, ColorSync Utility can be hours of fun. It presumably (most likely) uses the same routines for colour management that Aperture uses.
    Cheers
    Steffen.

  • Why can't I turn profile manager on?

I just downloaded Lion Server and I am a complete novice. There is a pretty good chance I am doing something wrong, but basically I am trying to set up profile manager so I can get VPN access from my Mac at work to my network at home. From what I understand, profile manager can make this happen with ease, but for whatever reason I cannot turn profile manager on. It says its on in Server.app, but when I click to get to the web interface, it says the service is turned off. Anyone have any advice on how I can resolve this problem?
    Thanks in adavnce.

  • Flickr Export does not manage color porfiles

You can look at these two pictures. Identical photos, one was exported with the "flickr" button and the other by export -> version -> manual upload. Anyone else experiencing this?

There is not really a need for colormanagent on the web.* You should only use sRGB since:
    1. Many web browsers don't even understand profiles other then sRGB, including the most used (unfortunately) web browser: Internet explorer.
    2. 99% of people surfing the web don't have calibrated monitors.
*usually, the profiles conversion already happened before the upload, just make sure the version you upload is in sRGB.

  • Flickr export does not recognize metadata changes

    * I did publish some photos to flickr with the flickr publishing service
    * Then I edited some metadata (GPS Data)
==> the flickr publisher does not recognize the changes, so the photos are not marked for "republishing"
it seems that the flickr publich services recognizes only changes in "capture" and "title".
that's strange, because if I had to explicitely mark each photo to "republish" I don't need a built-in publishing service

There is not really a need for colormanagent on the web.* You should only use sRGB since:
    1. Many web browsers don't even understand profiles other then sRGB, including the most used (unfortunately) web browser: Internet explorer.

  • Lion server wont kerberize to AD

I can get Lion server to connect to AD without issue, but even after I set the server permissions in AD proper delegation rights, I still can Kerberize. Any ideas what to try? I reinstalled Lion and lion Server fresh again.

Ok, I figured this out. Here's what I did:
    1. Bind Lion server to the 2003 AD
    2. Set up the server as an OD Master
    3. Set OD to SSL (I believe this is optional, but better secure than not)
    4. Bind client mac to AD.
    5. Bind client mac to lion server OD (Ldap3)
    6. Pull user from the AD on the Add User screen in Lion Server.
    7. Make group for user, add user to said group.
Upon login with the AD user, it autheticated, and it added the user network folder to the dock.
It still isn't pulling dock permissions, but I think that's just me needing to understand Profile Manager configurations better.
The next step is to find a way to forward the local Documents folder to the network folder that's on the dock. That will be a different discussion.
So in a nutshell, if you want your mac clients to authenticate to your windows AD, and pull permissions from Lion Server, the above should do the trick. Don't worry about Kerberizing or any of that junk.

  • Difference between ASCS and CI

    Hi Experts,
I am a bit confused with the difference between the terminologies ASCS and CI. With the introduction of ASCS the Message and Enqueue services are separated from CI then why does CI terminology still exists in the installation guide or for that reason why do we still have to install CI in HA set up?
What services will be there in CI with the existence of ASCS? Will the CI still hold Message server and Enqueue server and will be a replica of ASCS?
The simplest HA setup what I understand is this-
Node A- ASCS + CI + DB (With DB and ASCS as SPOFs and clustered)
    Node B - DI
So with this when Node A fails ASCS and DB gets moved to Node B and DI on Node B takes the place of CI. But my confusion here is if DI is taking the place of CI then CI and and DI becomes same in the whole architecture. Is it so?

  • Management of memory space - using totalMemory() and maxMemory()

I'm writing an app and applet which if "users" select too many images to display would easily create an java.lang.OutOfMemoryError. When loading images, I can used totalMemory() and maxMemory() to see what's being used and available before and/or after loading an image.
Is there a desirable "headroom" between totalMemory() and maxMemory() for "normal" JVM operations? In the case of the applet, there should be few net new objects created once the applet starts besides the images cached based on their selections.
My thinking is to limit the total memory available for image caching based on the the difference maxMemory() - "headrooom" - "application base object totalMemory()"
    TIA,
    Roy

I understand profiling the application to see what demands it has. Assuming the app/applet logic is not creating and disposing new objects, how much space does the JVM need to do it's "housekeeping"? or is that already allocated on initial invocation of the application? It isn't as simple as that.
I have gotten the VM (1.5 I believe) to start with something like a 3meg (somewhere around there) max heap. Although interesting that isn't usable.
When the VM loads something, like the regex api it is hard to say what actually gets loaded when. And when you create instances it takes more space as well.
So if you just want to guess then I would start with 32meg.

  • I am trying to  understand how Photoshop deals with ICC profiles

I have an Epson 3880 printer, which I am trying to master.   I am printing with either Photoshop CS2 or Photoshop CS5.   I would like to u nderstand where the profiles for particular papers are kept.
For example, in principle, I can go to the Epson website and download profiles.   But I don't understand the nomeclature I see there.  Thus, there are several different categories.  I started with the first and downloaded the one for Epson Hot Press Bright Paper
I get an archive which contains an executable file, which when run asks me if I want to extract the contents.  I run it and it completes, but I don't know what it put where.
So first of all, where does Photoshop keep profiles for different printer using different papers?
Second of all, where did that program put the files it supposedly extracted?  What does Hot Press Birght Paper mean?  Where are the profiles for the standard Epson papers?  Are there explicit profiles for using the 3880 with different papers, e.g., premimum glossy photo paper.   Where do I find them?
(I think I have software for viewing a profile if I can find it.)
    Anything more of interest?

Photoshop does not keep profiles anywhere.
Profiles are managed by the OS.
Photoshop shows the available profiles in it's UI, and gets the list of available profiles from the OS.
What does Hot Press Birght Paper mean?
That the profile applies to a particular paper, probably called "hot press bright" paper.
Yes, you will have a profile for each printer and type of paper -- you have to in order to describe how the image will appear on each printer and type of paper.

  • Trying to understand "User/Role/Profile Synchronization" and Batch Analysis

    Hello,
Im trying to understand what exactly and from which tables these jobs are copying to which tables in CC. I have a understanding that these jobs are moving also deleted roles from backend. This is causing unnecessary delay to long lasting job.
I would appreasite if some one could explain the logic behind these jobs. What the fullsync and incremental is reading ? What kind of changes are causing a role/user/profile  to be included to the full and incremental jobs?
How the incremental analysis logic is built ?
    br Janne

    Janne,
In my current implementation we are going for an offline risk analysis due to the heteregoneus system landscape of our client (several SAP and non SAP systems and several SAP systems under 4.6C). Eventhough within our approach we don't perfrom the backend synchronization (we use CC data extractor to pull data from backend into CC) hope the following info could hel you:
The tables such jobs you mention access to, are all the SAP backend system tables related with users, roles, profiles, action and permissions. If you check the data mapping appendix of the "user and configuration guide for 5.2" you will see all the data that CC retrieves. For instance, in order to extract user info (UserID, FName, LName, Email, Phone, Email, Department) tables USR21, USR02, ADRP, ADR6 and ADCP must be accessed.
    In terms of CC tables:
VIRSA_CC_SYSUSR >> UserIDs and Systems ID relationship
VIRSA_CC_GENOBJ >> User, Role and Profile master data
    VIRSA_CC_GENACT >> User-action, role-action and profile-action data
    VIRSA_CC_GENPRM >> User-permission, role-permission and profile-permission
    VIRSA_CC_SAPOBJ >> Action-permission
VIRSA_CC_OBJTEXT >> Objects descripcions (ACT, PRM, FLD, VAL, ORG)
    Hope this helps.

  • Understanding loitering objects and back references in profiler

i'm trying to debug a problem in my AIR app that results in
exhaustion of USER objects (USER objects are viewable in the
sysinternals tool process explorer) on my windows xp sp2 system.
once the USER objects for my AIR app grow to a certain number
(between 2000 and 3000) i'm unable to open new windows on my
    computer.
i'm using the profiler in flex builder 3 beta 2 to help
troubleshoot this problem. i take a memory snapshot, then interact
with my AIR app and watch the USER objects count climb, then take
another memory snapshot. i then click "Find Loitering Objects".
that opens up a Loitering Objects tab - i'm guessing that these
loitering objects are responsible for the USER objects climb.
most of the Loitering Objects are not my classes, but a few
are. Regex and RegexEditor, two model classes of mine, show an
Instance count equal to the total number of Instances i'd expect to
have been created between the two memory snapshots. if my app was
correctly functioning i'd expect the count for each to show 1, not
<n> where <n> is the number of times a new instance of
these objects is created. that leads me to believe that somewhere
in my code i'm hanging on to a reference to these objects,
preventing them from being garbage collected (i've tried clicking
the Run Garbage Collector link in the profiler, which doesn't
decrease the count of these objects). the Regex class extends
EventDispatcher, so there certainly could be a programming error on
my part (e.g. not removing event listeners) that could prevent
these objects from being garbage collected.
however, when i double click Regex in the Loitering Objects
view to view the Object References, i only find a single back
reference to RegexEditor. all other Regex instances have no back
references, yet they remain in memory. no RegexEditor instance has
a back reference, which doesn't make sense either - there is
definitely a reference to one instance of this class in my
application. i don't see any back references to view classes, which
doesn't make sense to me either, since there is a view class that
binds to the property values of Regex.
perhaps i fail to understand what back references mean in the
profiler. could someone clarify this for me? my best hope for
diagnosing the leak was to find the unexpected back references and
make sure i clean those up. any other suggestions for diagnosing my

    thanks.
