Understanding the connection to the database

hello,
i have installed databaseXE 10g and Developer suite 10g (installation: Complete).
When i run oracle designer, the system ask me for user and password to connect to the database.
i try to configure the application with Net Configuration Assistant, creating listeners and services names but i don't understand this procedure.
can somebody help me connecting to my database?!
windows 2000pro, sp: 4

Have you installed a repository? A repository is an Oracle schema that contains tables, views and procedures that manage the metadata - data about the data - used by Oracle Designer. You have to create a user in your Oracle XE database to own this schema, grant the user certain system rights and rights to select from certain views and execute certain packages owned by SYS. You will find a full description of pre-requisites and repository installation procedures under Software Configuration Manager/Oracle SCM Repository Installation Guide. By the way, Oracle XE is not officially supported as a platform for a repository, but I have heard that it does work.
After you install a repository, you will create additional users to whom you will grant access to the repository through the Repository Administration Utility (RAU). These are the usernames and passwords that the system is asking for.

  • Why do I get a class conflict between the Prepare SQL.vi and the Get Column Name.vi with the SQL Toolkit compatibility vis from the Database Connectivity Toolkit?

    I have done extensive programming with the SQL Toolkit with LabVIEW versions through 6.1. My customer now wants to upgrade to Windows 7, so I am trying to upgrade to LabVIEW 2009 (my latest purchased version) using the Database Connectivity Toolkit, and the SQL Toolkit Compatibility vis. Everything seemed to be going okay with the higher level SQL operations, but I ran into trouble with the Get Column Name.vi.
    The pictures below show the problem. The original SQL Toolkit connected the Prepare SQL.vi with the Get Column Name.vi with a cluster of two references, one for connection, and one for sql. The new compatibility vis have a class conflict in the wire because the Prepare SQL.vi contains a cluster with connection, and command references, but the Get Column Name.vi expects a cluster with connection and recordset references.
    How do I resolve this conflict?
    Thank You.
    Dan

    I've never worked with the old version of the toolkit, so I don't know how it did things, but looking inside the SQL prep VI, it only generates a command, and the the column name VI wants a recordset. I'm not super familiar with all the internals of ADO, but my understanding is that is standard - you only have the columns after you execute the command and get the recordset back. What you can apparently do here is insert the Execute Prepared SQL VI in the middle and that will return what you need.
    I'm not sure why it worked before. Maybe the execute was hidden inside the prep VI or maybe you can get the column names out of the command object before execution. In general, I would recommend considering switching to the newer VIs.

  • Problem in getting the database connection from a connection pool

    Hai All,
    I am facing a problem in getting the database connection from a connection pool created on weblogic server 8.1.
    I am using the Oracle database 8.1.7.
    I have configured my connection pool, datasource and JNDI in weblogic.
    In my java program i have the following code to retrieve the connection.
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.Hashtable;
    import javax.naming.Context;
    import javax.naming.InitialContext;
    class jdbcshp1 {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
         Connection connection = null;
         try {
               Hashtable ht = new Hashtable();
               ht.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,"weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory");  // Wanna get rid of this.
               ht.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL,"t3://localhost:7001"); // wanna get rid of this.
               // Get a context for the JNDI look up
               Context ctx = new InitialContext(ht);
            javax.sql.DataSource ds = (javax.sql.DataSource) ctx.lookup ("myjndi1");
              //Create a connection object
              connection = ds.getConnection();
         The above code is working fine but, the two ht.put statements are creating problem.
    The problem is, after converting the application into WAR file it can be deployed
    on any machine or different port on same machine. My application fails if its deployed on
    weglogicserver which is at different port.
    Is there any way that i can get rid of those ht.put statements or any other way to solve the problem.
    any help is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Pooja.

    Hai All,
    Firstly, thanks for ur reply.
    Even i have seen some code which uses context constructor with out any parameter and works fine.
    i dont understand why its not working for my code.
    When i remove those ht.put code and use context constructor with out any parameter, it giving an error.
    Context ctx = new InitialContext();
    javax.sql.DataSource ds = (javax.sql.DataSource) ctx.lookup ("ocjndi");
    connection = ds.getConnection();The error is as follows:
    javax.naming.NoInitialContextException: Need to specify class name in environment or system property, or as an applet parameter, or in an application resource file: java.naming.factory.initial
    the above error is forcing me to include those code but if the port number is changed the code will not work. Plz let meknow if some setting have to be made.
    I appreciate all ur valuable help.
    Thanks once again.
    Pooja.

  • How to disconnect the database connection using crystal report

    Post Author: cp_pramodu
    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
    Hi All,
    We have developed an application using .Net and Crystal Reports 10 for generating Adhoc reports from Business system (db sybase 12). We are using the below mentioned script for opening rpt files.
    Try
           ReportDocument1.Load(sReportName)
           For Each table In ReportDocument1.Database.Tables
                  ' Get the TableLogOnInfo object.
                  logonInfo = table.LogOnInfo
                  ' Set the server or ODBC data source name, database name,
                  ' user ID, and password.
                  logonInfo.ConnectionInfo.ServerName = sReportServerName
                  logonInfo.ConnectionInfo.DatabaseName = DBName
                  logonInfo.ConnectionInfo.UserID = UserName
                  logonInfo.ConnectionInfo.Password = Password
                  ' Apply the connection information to the table.
                 table.ApplyLogOnInfo(logonInfo)
    Next
    'Me.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor
    Me.CrystalReportViewer1.ReportSource = ReportDocument1
    'Me.Cursor = Cursors.Default
    Catch ex As Exception
    'Response.Write(ex.Message)
    Finally
    Me.Cursor = Cursors.Default
    'ReportDocument1.Close()
    'ReportDocument1.Dispose()
    End Try
    Each time user opens the report a new connection is established to the database, can we disconnect the connection established from crystal reports, while closing crystal report. At the same time i want to setup an Idle time for these connections. In database level, i will not be able to set idle time in database level, as it affect our electronic channels.
    Waiting for a reply.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi,
    If you are reworking the application can you not build in the functionality to re-establish a connection if there is a failure? That is, a submission from the application server to the database server detects a failure, etc. and then re-establishes the connection. If you need a more frequent check than during a user-initiated roundtrip, you may be best served by using the "dummy query" technique on some time interval.
    From my understanding using HA Event Notification would require a RAC database (plus a multi-threaded application and services correctly configured on the RAC-side).
    In the documentation I see this:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14250/oci09adv.htm#sthref1495
    "Applications must connect to a RAC instance to enable HA event notification."
    In any case, this has the potential to be a bit complicated...

  • How to check the database connection using OCI

    I am working on enhhancement of very old application developed using C and OCI. It has a background process which acts as a middleware for interaction of any other front end process with oracle database. Any processes, which needs to interact with database sends a request to background peocess and then it will execute a call to execute the stored procedures for performing requested operation (like select, update, insert) on table and will send the result back to respective process. So this process has to be always running in background and connected to branch database.
    If branch database gets restarted or connection gets dropped due to some ad-hoc problem then the background process also has to be restarted manually. Because this process establishes the connection to branch database only once on start up and it does not have the intelligence to reconnect automatically in such scenario.
    I am looking forward to build the intelligence in this process to automatically reconnect if connection with branch database is lost. But I am not familer with OCI, and I am not sure if there is any OCI call which can determine if my earlier connection is still available. Can any one please tell me if there is any other way to check the connection other than the execution of dummy query, then check if it gets executed properly and then do the actual query.
    Thanks in advance,
    Deeapk

  • Connection to the database (beginner's question)

    I do not quite understand the relation between "@connect alias" and actual TNS name. The documentation tells that the syntax should be:

    Regards
    LeonidIf you use the syntax "sqlplus scott/tiger" (or within sqlplus, "conn scott/tiger"), you are asking to connect to a local (on the same machine) database instance identified by the value of the environment variable ORACLE_SID. Tnsnames.ora is not involved.
    If you use the syntax "sqlplus scott/tiger@mydb" (or within sqlplus "conn scott/tiger@mydb") you are asking to connect to the database (local or remote) identified by the "mydb' entry in your tnsnames.ora file.
    =================================
    Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
    {code}
    larry =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = curley)
    {code}
    Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
    {code}
    $> sqlplus scott/tiger@larry
    {code}
    tns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Next, tns sends a request to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
    Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
    Next, the request arrives at port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, you'll be connected.
    A couple of important points.
    First, the listener is a +server side only+ process. It's entire purpose in life is the receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It +creates+ the connection. It doesn't +sustain+ the connection. One listener, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
    Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a +client side+ issue. It's purpose is for addressess resolution - the tns equivelent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
    What can go wrong?
    First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
    Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
    Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
    Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
    Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
    Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"

  • Closing the database connection after report in a server application

    I searched these forums and the internet for a definitive answer on asking the Crystal SDK for java to close the jdbc connection after it has generated a report.  We have been using the Crystal Report SDK to generate reports within our JEE application, built upon the Spring framework, for the past two years.  It works well, especially if you prepare views in the database for your reports.
    From what I can tell once you have used ReportClientDocument to create your report you all the close() method to release resources associated with report generation, but this does not close the jdbc database connection.
    Further research states that if you are using the CrystalReportViewer you can call the dispose method to close the database connection.  We are not using JSP nor this class, so that does us little good.
    Finally I found a post that one could call ((AdvancedReportDocument)reportClientDocument.getReportSource()).dispose().  This doesn't drop the connection either.
    Each report actually opens 3 connections according to SQL Server.  Each report will reuse the connections it has open, so for 50 reports, theoretically, we could have up to 150 connections.  We explained to our client those connections  remain inactive, however this is unacceptable to our client as they would like to minimize the number of connections left open to their database.
    If anyone can post any further information on this issue, it is much appreciated.

    Yes, another team member found the issue.  Quite embarrassing really I didn't see it.  I was looking for the answer within Crystal's libraries.  It had nothing to do with Crystal.
    The developer who wrote the helper code for using Crystal first opened a connection to the datasource for the live production database and read that connection information for the report. Next he set that connection information in the report template's PropertyBag, then ran the report. The developer however forgot to close the connection he used to look up the connection info, leaving a memory leak and using up all the connections.
    I'm glad you inquired.  I forgot to post the resolution here.

    Hussein,
    One thing which I noticed now is in the apps Tier the
    tnsnames.ora under $TNS_ADMIN
    shows entry like this:
    PROD=
            (DESCRIPTION=
                    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<appsServerName>)(PORT=1521))
                    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<dbServer>)(PORT=1521))
                (CONNECT_DATA=
                    (SID=PROD)
            )Actually *(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<appsIPaddress>)(PORT=1521))* this line in the tnsnames.ora is not correct. In fact the appsServerName should be replaced with dbServerName
    I deleted the tnsnames.ora and reran autoconfig but it is again recreating the same entry.
    Any clue how this can be fixed?
    Thanks

  • Understanding the way to connect a MDD to BlackMagic Decklink Extreme card

    Hi,
    I require some help in the following:
    I recently bought myself a Blackmagic DeckLink Extreme™ with 10bit SDI/analog video and audio capture card.
    Looking at the specs, http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/sd/specs/, can someone give me directions as to the best setup I can do from the following sources and what other equipment I may require to achieve it.
    - mono stereo audio VHS -> has 1 video/audio in and 1 video/audio out (composite connections)
    - stereo audio video camera -> has 1 8 pin S-Video out port to composite connections (Hi8 tape type)
    - DVD player -> has composite 2 x 2ch stereo audio out, 1 x 5.1ch stereo audio out, 2 x video out, 1x component video out, 2 x S-video out, 2 x digital audio out; 1 x RCA/OPT
    - 2 x 23" monitors connected by ADC and DVI connections to a Apple MDD G4, may relay to 60" Plasma for video monitoring from video card prior to creating DVD final piece for playback.
    Basically, I wanted to have multiple source inputs and outputs, but I'm having difficulty in understanding the setup. Please refer to http://www.blackmagic-design.com/downloads/connections/decklinkdiagram.pdf page 5/6.
    I purchased the following from JayCar
    - 6 x PA3655 ADPT PLG RCA:
    https://secure4.vivid-design.com.au/jaycar2005/productView.asp?ID=PA3655&CATID=& keywords=PA3655&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumb er=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=
    - 1 x AC1668 SWITCH AV 3WAY:
    https://secure4.vivid-design.com.au/jaycar2005/productView.asp?ID=AC1668&CATID=& keywords=AC1668&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumb er=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=
    What other devices do I need to set up the equipment in the following way:
    <pre>
    Computer ------- Video In + Stereo In -----------> 3WAY SWITCH BOARD
    | | ^ ^ ^
    | | | | |
    Bigpond |---- OUT ---> TV --------|-----|-----|
    (Satellite Internet) | | | |
    FOXTEL DVD VCR V/CAM
    (Satellite TV)
    </pre>
    Currently I have not succeeded.
    I have just done a simple test like so:
    <pre>
    Computer ------- Video In + Stereo In ---------> DVD (*)
    |
    Bigpond
    </pre>
    (*) Tested using the following:
    <pre>
    From Decklink -- Y IN (from deck) --> DVD Y port
    -- B-Y IN (from deck) --> DVD Pb port
    -- R-Y IN (from deck) --> DVD Pr port
    -- SDI IN (from deck) ---> DVD Digital audio out
    ASWELL AS
    From Decklink -- Y OUT (from deck) --> DVD Y port
    -- B-Y OUT (from deck) --> DVD Pb port
    -- R-Y OUT (from deck) --> DVD Pr port
    -- SDI OUT (from deck) ---> DVD Digital audio out
    </pre>
    Not one has seemed to work. What am I missing here?
    Thanks
    Tiberius

    I want to buy a hard disk (not a NAS device) and plug it into my Airport Extreme in order to share data between two Mac computers, and to stream iTunes content to my Apple TV.
    One option is to purchase a hard drive (say, a 2TB Hitachi G-Technology drive) and connect it to the USB port on the back of the Apple Extreme. The other option is to purchase a drive with an ethernet connection (say, a 2TB Lacie drive) and connect it to an ethernet port on the Apple Extreme.
    In the second case what you'd have actually is a NAS. Apple's AirPort routers aren't known for fast file sharing. The NAS option might be faster.
    Is either option better for streaming movies from the hard drive to my Apple TV?
    I could be wrong, but an AppleTV may not be able to access content directly from a network drive. It may require that a Mac serve as an intermediary.
