Understanding the " do not backup " under option

i read this in the help section:
Excluding items from a Time Machine backup
You can exclude items from a Time Machine backup to save space on your backup volume. If you’re using a different method to back up certain files and folders, you may want to exclude them as well.
To exclude items from a Time Machine backup:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Time Machine.
Open Time Machine preferences
Click Options.
To specify an item that shouldn’t be backed up, click Add and choose one or more items. You can also drag items to the list. To remove an item from the list, select it and then click Remove .
**+_The backup disk is automatically included in the list of items that shouldn’t be backed up.**+_
Click Done.
I getting ready to start time machine, but I noted under " option" under the window pane -" *+_do not backup_+* " is listed my 2 hard drive, one being the time machine drive .
I see the info from the help section states that the backup disk is automatically included in this list. Does this mean I should delete it out of this listing , so time machine will use it for backup or have I mis-read the above help statement?
Austin

no, you should not remove the TM drive from the don not back up list. in fact, you won't be able to do it if you try. TM drive can not and should not back up itself so it is on the do not back up list by default.

  • Can not delete external HD from the "Do not backup list"

I just installed and began to use Time Machine. I have two external Hard Drives (one unpartitioned, and one partitioned into the time machine drive, and another drive) attached to my macbook Pro. In the list of drives to not back up, I see the two drives listed, along with the time machine drive. I can not remove the Hard Drives from the list to be excluded. They are there, I can select them, but the minus sign is grayed out, i.e. unselectable. Therefore this external drive does not get backed up by Time Machine. Any ideas?

That's correct. Time Machine needs the hidden +File System Event Store+ kept by OSX on disks formatted as +OSX Extended.+ Using that feature is how TM can quickly figure out what's changed since the last backup, rather than examining every file and folder on the disk.
That isn't available on other formats.

  • Can't understand the output of the exercise

    here is the problem:-
An audio signal is sometimes stored as a list of int values. The values represent the intensity of the signal at successive time intervals. Of course, in a program the signal is represented with an array.
Often a small amount of noise is included in the signal. Noise is usually small, momentary changes in the signal level. An example is the "static" that is heard in addition to the signal in AM radio.
Smoothing a signal removes some of the noise and improves the perceptual quality of the signal. This exercise is to smooth the values in an integer array.
Say that the original values are in the array "signal". Compute the smoothed array by doing this: Each value smooth[N] is the average of three values: signal[N-1], signal[N], and signal[N+1].
For the first element of smooth, average the first two elements of signal. For the last element of smooth, average the last two elements of signal.
here is the original data for the signal array.
    int[] signal  = {5, 5, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7, 6, 5, 4, 1, 4};i had to declare another array by the name of smooth.
int[] smooth Now i am having a big problem. here is the output of the program from author point of view using the original data in signal array.
    C:\>java Smooth
    signal: 1 5 4 5 7 6 8 6 5 4 5 4
    smooth: 3 3 4 5 6 7 6 6 5 4 4 4
C:\>i got completely lost. the original signal data is replaced by a new one but how ? if i can get a more detail explanation on this problem by anyone it would be great. so i thought to assign some duke dollars if i can understand the logic not trying to be greedy but to see who is a good teacher. thanks.
once i get a good explanation i can go ahead and start coding and see if i can achieve this. i am pretty much sure it is a simple task but author made it looks like my worst nightmare.

  • Time Machine Backups Up "Do Not Backup" Folders

For my first Time Machine backup, I started with a new 1TB drive properly formated. I selected 2 folders I did NOT want backup up. Once TM finished I entered the backup & there are the Do Not Backup folders with all their contents. Should I trash the Plist? which one?
    Thanks

    James,
I'm betting your messed with the backupd.plists which are different than the TimeMachine.plist.
*Backups Have Ceased With No Error Messages*
I think something is wrong with the backupd.plists. If something is wrong with these .plists you can select your backup disk in Time Machine Preferencess. But you CANNOT initiate a backup, even when selecting "Back Up Now" from the TM menu. And no error message will appear when it fails. You should still be able to launch Time Machine’s “time travel” interface though.
In a Finder window navigate to the LaunchDaemons folder. The file path is /System/Library/LaunchDaemons.
Click on the NAME column to arrange everything alphabetically.
Scroll down to the 4 backupd.plist files. They are:
    com.apple.backupd-attach.plist
    com.apple.backupd-auto.plist
    com.apple.backupd-wake.plist
    com.apple.backupd.plist
Now launch Time Machine from the Dock.
From the time scale on the right choose a date before backups began to fail.
When the windows stop moving, Hold the Shift key down and click on each of the 4 files to select them.
They should all be highlighted now. Click "Restore" in the lower right-hand corner.
You will be asked to enter your Admin Password.
When asked 'Do you want to Replace the existing files' say yes to each one.
Now Highlight one of the restored files and Get Info. Sharing & Permissions should be:
    system - Read & Write
    wheel - Read only
    everyone - Read only
Reboot your Mac. Once back at the desktop try initiating a backup.
If this does not work you may have to do an Archive and Install to restore Time Machine functionality.
Let us know if this resolved the issue
    Cheers!

  • Can't find "Does Not Contain" under CACS Attribute drop-down list in CACS

when using CACS function, I couldn’t seem to find the “Does Not Contain” under CACS attribute drop-down in CACS Constraints Tab.
I could only see “Known to Contain”, “May Contain”, “Country of Origin”, and “Complies With”
    does anyone know why?

"MNC" is match with "Does not contain", but the label name is not correct. We already have internal bug to track it.

  • Time Capsule will not backup other local drives

I have a MacBook Pro and I have partitioned the local drive four ways three OSs and one shared local data partition.
    Vista (NTFS)
    OS X (HFS)
    Fedora (EXT3)
    Data (NTFS)
I want to be able to backup the data partition using TC. TC is backing up the OS X partition just fine. The data partition mounts normally and I can easily access it in Finder, but it is not backing up. It's not on the "do not backup" list, so I am not sure what the issue is. How can I add the data partition to the Time Machine backups to Time Capsule? I've been slowly trying to figure this out here and there for a while and can't.

    William,
Unfortunately, Time Machine will only backup other disks formated "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". It does not recognize Windows formatted disks.
    Hope this clarifies things.
    Cheers!

iTunes shows I have an encrypted backup under preferences.   It's got the pad lock. When I click restore the encrypted backup is not an option. I've been test MDM products and may have caused this. How do I restore the encrypted backup.

I just came here today to ask the same question.
I have an iPod Gen2 with version 4.2.1 iOS, and iTunes 11.0.2.26
My iPod Touch was running sluggish so I backed up and selected the "Encrypt local backup" to "back up account passwords used on my iPod".
I selected a password for this backup and restored my iPod Touch.
When I went to restore from backup, that encrypted backup is not available on the drop down list.
However, if I go to the top of ITunes and click "Edit", "Preferences" "Device", it shows the back up with the pad lock on it.
I thought I was being smart backing up with encryption to back up account passwords, but now I have lost everything.
So many people have the issue where it asks for a password when they never told iTunes to do an encrypted backup and here we are with an encrypted backup, and we know the password, but we don't get the option to restore from it.

Tom at the Genius Bar told me that Option Delete would work. It does not.
I had to upgrade to iTunes 11.1.(I26) because it is required with OS7 on my iPod Touch (5th Gen). I have tried shutting down iTunes, then shutting down the entire system. This is the first in many visits that the Genius Bar gave me a solution that did not work.
This is a big awkward computer locked to my desk. I would rather not unlock it and then carry it through a shopping center to the Genius Bar if i can avoid oit.
When I installed iTunes 11.1, I discovered that Ihad to resubscribe to virtually all of the podcasts that I had previously been subscribed to. That was a surprise.

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • HT4623 The software update option is not available under my general tab...now what

The software update option is not available under my general tab...now what

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases - you may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

How do i backup the list of load images automatically exceptions under Options->Content. I want to transfer to another comp without re-adding one at a time. EVen if there is no way to backup, what is the system file for Firefox that stores these, so i can transfer this file or open it in an XML or similar editor to copy them out?

The permissions.sqlite file stores 'allow' and 'block' exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and extensions (software) installation.

  • Updated to the 7 version.  Under contacts there is no option for adding Notes.  How do you get it back?

I updated to the 7 version.  When you add a contact now, you no longer have the option for adding notes.   Also all the apps I purchased are  no longer on my desktop. The apps are shown under settings but I do not see where you can add them to the desktop.

I see notes under "add instant message" when you are setting up a new contact. Notes appears between "add instant message" and  "add field" .  Perhaps you didn't scroll down far enough.  This is on my iPhone 4 so I don't know about other phones.

  • Could not understand the Explode option in "Copy/Merge Forecast" program

    Hi All,
These are the part of period dates of the organization calendar.
    5/26/2011     6/27/2011
    6/27/2011     7/25/2011
    7/25/2011     8/22/2011
We are trying to copy a forecast from another forecast from the same organization. The forecast consists only end items. We are trying to explode the forecast values from end item forecast to new forecast. I could not understand how the explosion of the forecast happens.
    Scenario 1:
When the start date of the Copy/Merge forecast was entered as 26th July 2011. I see all the items of exploded forecast starting from 27 June 2011.
    Scenario 2:
When the start date of the Copy/Merge forecast was entered as 30th June 2011. I see all the items of exploded forecast starting from 26 May 2011.
I would like to understand on what basis the forecast explosion happens, does it considers any of the lead times such as manufacturing lead time, cumulative manufacturing lead time and offset the forecast backwards ?
We are expecting the forecast date to appear post start date given during the submission of program, since the explode option is set as Yes, we are seeing past due forecast for exploded items, request your help here in understanding the forecast explosion during copy/merge forecast program.
    Thanks,
    Vignesh

    Hi Sandeep,
    The calendar dates are:
    1/24/2011     2/21/2011
    2/21/2011     3/28/2011
    3/28/2011     4/25/2011
    4/25/2011     5/26/2011
    5/26/2011     6/27/2011
    6/27/2011     7/25/2011
    7/25/2011     8/22/2011
    8/22/2011     9/26/2011
    9/26/2011     10/24/2011
    10/24/2011     11/21/2011
    11/21/2011     12/27/2011
    12/27/2011     1/23/2012
Issue is when the start date is entered as 30th June 2011. When the forecast explosion happens, the exploded forecast date starts from 26th May 2011. Which becomes a past due forecast. We would like to understand why the exploded items goes to periods in the past. Some forecasts go back two periods. We are not able to find the pattern and it is not following the leadtime defined.
I am not sure of the business reason for the forecast explosion to be done here instead in ASCP/MRP plan.
    Thanks,
    Vignesh
