Understanding wireless speed re cable modem speeds

If my cable modem runs significantly slower than 11 mbps, say what my Linksys 802.11b router speed is, how is an AirPort Express running at 54 mbps going to give me any more "internet browsing" speed? Wouldn't my high-speed cable access connection in my home be the bottleneck?
I have an iBook g4 with an AirPort Extreme card in it, btw. I'm wondering if an AirPort Express is going to give me any noticable kind of Web browsing speed boost over my cheap DLink 802.11b wireless router.... Thanks for your help!

Though use of WEP or WPA does add some "overhead" to the data transmission, this effect is insignificant and not noticeable given the relatively slow speed of most broadband internet connections. In other words, using WEP or WPA will in most cases not result in any decrease in "browsing speed" irrespective of whether you are using an 802.11b or 802.11g wireless router.
Bottom line - replacing your existing 802.11b wireless router with an 802.11g capable wireless router won't improve the speed of your internet access.

  • Cable Modem Speed

    http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
We had a cable modem installed last week and were promised a download rate of 16 Mbs.
When you go on to the SpeakEasy website, you are simply asked to select a city to begin the test. There is no indication that you are supposed to pick any one city over another for the test which I would assume that any pick should yield the same result. Yet when I do New York I get 6 Mbs and selecting Seattle gives me 9 Mbs. Questions -
    why are the rates different
why am I miles away from the promised rate of 16 Mbs
    Thanks
    John

    HI,
Select the city you reside in. Cable modem download/upload speeds very depending on location.
why am I miles away from the promised rate of 16 Mbs
If that's the case, assuming your ISP provided you with the cable modem, you need to contact them.
If you are running 10.5.5 as your forum profile indicates, updating your system software may help.
Go to your Apple Menu/Software Updates.

  • WRT400N lowers cable modem speed

    Hi,
I use a cable/internet provider and when connecting my laptop to their cable modem port directly, I see download speeds of 15-22 Mbps consistently. But when I connect the Linksys/Cisco WRT400N to the cable modem, the speed at the WRT400N's direct connect LAN port drops to 5-7 Mbps and via a WiFi link, I see a similar 5-7 Mbps speed. Why is the WRT400N AP/router dropping the speed by a factor of 3?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a WRT600N - and it is even worse.  Troubleshooting with comcast, connected directly to modem - I get around 15, but through my router - can't get above 1.8....  Unfortunately, my router is now out of warrantee - so - no linksys tech support without a fee!  Any suggestions on what settings may need to be tweaked?  I have tried resetting the router, but it doesn't give me any improvement in speed.

  • Connecting Two WRT54GS Wireless To A Cable Modem w/ TIVO, PS3, and Wii

Not real great in the networking thing. Upon reading I have found that you can only use WEP on a wireless adapter pluged into a TIVO (series 2 that is christmas gift to wife) to connect it to the internet, and as a concern of having to downgrade my entire network on my main router to WEP I looked for a solution. I read somewhere that if you cat5e from the TIVO into a WRT54GS you can then use the router to send wireless with WPA (or WPA2) to another WRT54GS that is cat5e  into the modem. To complicate things I am giving my kids a PS3 and a Wii for christmas and wanted to connect it to the same router as the TIVO.  My internet is Charter Comunications cable. The two routers are Versions 5 and 6. The TIVO is remote and I cannot get cat 5e cable to it so I need to use wireless. All distances are ok for wireless. The "main" router that is plugged into the cable modem is a ver.6 and is set in DHCP. All "gifts" are wrapped under the tree so I can't set those components before christmas. I would like to setup the routers to speed things along. I have a laptop (hardwired ) to the second router to set it up. Two other computers and a HP printer are connected to the "main" router. All computers are Windows XP -SP2.
    Questions:
    1. Can this be done with these components and keep security on the "Main" router maintained?
    2. Upon reading these boards it sounds like I should split my system into two seperate routers with the second one passing thru the main router. How would this be done? What are the settings? Reserve addresses for static in the main router to use in the second and run as one system? Remember I am not to good at the network thing... so be complete in the explaination.
    3. If I do things as indicated in question 2 will that leave my TIVO, PS3, and Wii open to attack to the internet? Any way to better secure?
    4. Any pointers as to how this really should be done would help. Any better ideas in setup??
    Thanks.......

Yep, I wanted to connect them wireless but it sounds like I cant without some issues.
Second choice: Cascade--  Connect routers by Cat 5e and make the second one a WEP that has the TIVO, PS3, and the Wii connected wireless to it. The main Router would have the computers and printer connected to it. The main router would be WPA (2) protected for a wireless laptop.
    Is the second choice possible??
Should the second router be with static IP's??  Is this the best way to do this with these types of items connected?
I think this will make two wireless systems but if I make the second one a DHCP enabled one then I think it might cause conflicts with a chance of both routers picking the same IP for a connected item. What is the best method for doing this and keeping some type of security??

  • Connecting Wireless Router to Cable Modem /USB

    Good evening,
I have searched and searched, and can't find an answer!
My cable modem is hooked up to my PC by a USB plug. On the install of the Wireless WRT54GS, it says to unplug the ethernet from the modem and plug it into the router. I don't have an ethernet , just the USB, and there is no USB on the router. Is there an adapter that fits over the USB to convert it to an ethernet plug? I am lost.....
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Annie

I have same initial problem and in addition, how to connect using the Linksys WRT54G router, a home network consisting of a pc desktop and 2 MacBooks wirelessly and an HP laptop by wire. I think the answer to the USB problem is to uninstall the USB and reconnect using Ethernet.  Possibly with assistance from your ISP?  Anybody out there got any ideas?

  • Power cycling the cable modem speeds up my email. Why?

For several days my email coming into my inbox was very slow, about several minutes to bring in about ten messages without any large attachments. Also opening up the email messages was very slow with the dreaded beach ball spinning. Then when I power cycled my Motorola Surfboard SB5100 modem to try to alleviate slow line speeds, the email problem went away! email came in fast and opened up quickly. Why would getting a new dynamic IP address help dramatically with email retrieval? (There was no effect on speeding up the line connection.)
    Thanks.
    Raymon

    Update on my question:
    1. Power cycling the modem to speed up email worked only once and I've not been able to reproduce it. Instead what seems to work well (so far) is "Compacting Folders". I'm using the Netscape 7.2 email client. When I called Netscape tech support, they agreed on Compacting Folders but cautioned that this may corrupt some email files. So far I've not seen any such corruption, but then I've not systematically checked all the email I have in folders.
    2. Since my initial posting about two weeks ago, I've discovered that the "low connection speeds in the afternoon and lasting until about midnight" was apparently entirely due to my not clearing my Netscape browser cache often enough. Now when ever I see a drop in connection speed I simply trash the browser cache and the line speed immediately clocks back up to normal! And so, no sign of nodal oversubscription what so ever.

  • Adding Wireless to Comcast Cable Modem

Hey Folks, use to be a Geek way back in the day of the PCXT (for you old timers) My daughter away at college needs to add wireless to her Motorola 6121. What's the best way? Adding a wireless router or swapping out the modem for a model with wireless. How hard is it to configure a wireless router to work with the existing modem?
    Thanks for the help.
    Bob

I like Belkin. I got a refurbished Wireless N router for $9.99 a year ago and it still works today. No problems with it whatsoever.

  • Is the airport extreme just a replacment for your cable modem?

What exactly is the airport extreme? I been thinking about buying one but I want to know what does it exactly do. Is it a replacement for your cable modem that creates a wireless network?

No it is not a replacement for your cable modem. Airport Extreme allows you to access the Net wirelessly. Your cable modem gives you your broadband access to the Net, but you have to connect to it via an Ethernet cable (RJ45). If you own a Apple Laptop, like an MacBook you need a wireless connection. Apple’s Airport Extreme gives you this access. Also it comes with the latest wireless speed “n”, verses “g” and “b” before it. In fact it will do all three speeds.
I have a “b” speed desktop system that is connected via an Ethernet cable, and two laptops that use the new “n” speed and one laptop that is running under the “g” speed. The best part is that you can plug a printer or hard-drive via an USB cable and share it with other computers on you home network. Also it very easy to use. If you don’t have a Laptop there is not much use for this product.

I am using several Macs running Yosemite. I was recently “upgraded” to Xfinity’s new cable modem which can support both 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz networks at the same time. Actually I can connect to the internet over both with a satisfactory bump in speed for the Ghz. However when I connect to the 5Ghz the Time capsule disappears from the Airport Utility and claims to be Not Found. Is there something I have done wrong or just a Yosemite Teething Problem

First restart your mac and try again.
    It could be
that the router and the TC are interfering wirelessly with each other.
You can check this by pressing the option key while clicking on the wireless icon on your screen
    Open Wireless Diagnostics
    enter your user password
    Press CMD 4 then Scan
You will see all the wireless channels being used in your location and you can check if they are on the same channel
Make the SSID for the TC simple like MyTC
    Set 5Ghz to auto
    Update the TC
    Try again

  • Can a G4 Desktop OS 8.6 be hooked up to cable modem high speed?

Can anyone help me set up my apple G4 desktop os 8.6 to work with a high speed cable modem to get internet access?

    Hi Gepicou
In a word yes, your G4 will definitely support a high speed DSL connection - I'm writing to you on a 7300 powerPC mac I've just dusted off, sent to a repair shop where they set her up for my 512Ko line. I'm deep in the countryside so I don't get a powerful signal, but all is fine. The modem is a Thompson 510 (ethernet).
Normally I use my present Powerbook running on Panther, and since I'm going to England for work reasons, I'm leaving my partner with my old (and dear) Mac to use.
You could try the forum "Mac OS 10.3" > getting online - loads of folk there have used OS9 before, and have experience in newer connections that weren't really around when OS8 or 9 were still mainly in use.
Otherwise, if you get your running orders from that forum, take your G4 to a technician - mine configured the modem in 20 minutes, it cost me 20 euros...
    Good luck!
    Kathy

  • Motorola - SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 High-Speed Cable Modem - Silver

can you use a Motorola - SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 High-Speed Cable Modem - Silver and a router instead of the modem/router that they provide?

I'm not sure if you're asking about DSL or FiOS service.
DSL service requires a DSL modem, not a DOCSIS modem.
FiOS does not use modems, just routers.  FiOS routers do have a MoCA (coax) port to talk to the ONT and set-top-boxes.  You can use non-Verizon routers with FiOS, but it requires an Ethernet connection from the ONT instead of MoCA.  If FiOS TV is used, a Verizon router must be in the mix.
So, the short answer is there is no Verizon service that uses DOCSIS.  Cable-modems are not used with Verizon services.
    Good Luck.

About a year ago FireFox stopped function to modifiy settings (such as port fowarding). This drove me relantly to use Internet Explorer for this work. Now in Windows 10 IE is replaced by Microft Edge. It will not perform the settings changes. If you check a checkbox it reverts to unchecked. Additionly the Port Fowarding dose not report the existing checkbox status. • Wireless Internet access via requires unplugging cable modem -

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.1) and Airport Express (7.4.2). I have high speed Internet via Comcast/cable modem. I spent 30 minutes with the Apple Tech Support folks and was finally able to get wireless internet access. However, after I shutdown and reboot, the only way I can wireless internet is to unplug the internet cable from both the wall plug and cable modem and unplug the modem, both for about two minutes. This isnt what I had in mind when I crossed over from the dark side (PC laptop world) and am having buyer's remorse. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem (i dont want to unplug cables before each session on the internet)?

    Mr. Timmons,
Thank you so much for the response.  I thought the complete reboot would work, but apparently not.  I followed the directions precisely, even waiting a few minutes longer than suggested for each of the steps.  My air express is still blinking yellow.  I think the issue has something to do with the DHCP and the IP address which are diifferent. The IP address is one series of number (starts with 169), and the LAN IP address is another number (starts with 10). Status on airport express show yellow for internet connection, and yellow for no DSN servers. When I go to the internet tab of airport utility, it shows the iPv4 address starts wutg the 169 number. When I click on the network tab, the DHCP range starts with the 10 number.  When I open the Network Options window, the iPv4 DHCP range starts with the 10 number.  I am at a loss as to how to get them to match up (with either the 169 number or the 10 number).  V/R sjbgtmo
