Undesired default behavior in Software Simulation

Hi there!
I created a software simulation (demonstration setting enabled) and I noticed, that when the user presses the enter key during the recording to perform an action, Captivate 6 creates a left mouse click in the project.
Most probably this happens because the enter key, is usually equal to a left mouse click action.
However, in my project this is not the case.
Is there any setting that I missed out?
P/S: I use Captivate 6 on a Mac OSX (i5 CPU, 8gb RAM)

Well, every typing in my case is followed by an enter keystroke as a confirmation of the typing, so I couldn't be sure, if this behavior is because of the typing or the enter key.
That's the screenshot of the timeline.

  • Software Simulation Issue

Got a weird one on a  colleague's system. When she records a software simulation or a video demo, the file saves as a single slide. The settings are as seen below for recording:
All other settings are at the default parameters. Any ideas as to why she's getting a single slide output?

Hey, Lieve!   I know it was a software simulation - we set it up, opened up the recording window, rechecked the settings, recorded - and came up with this. I use the video demo settings quite a bit - the timeline on this only shows a default 3 second slide, not a full video recording.

  • Captivate 6 Software Simulation Recording Quality

Is there a way to set Captivate 6 to automatically record software simulations (demo) as high quality instead of optimized? I have a feeling there's a setting that I'm just missing. Thanks.

Ok, I just tried it in a new project and think there might be a wider problem here.
I copied the first (target) and last slide into a new project. I added a slide in between.
I added a button to the last slide to jump to Slide 2 and a button to jump to Slide 1. When I previewed each, I noticed that the playhead in the playbar jumped to the start of each slide. Hoorah.
I then set about recreating the basics of my original project. The variable names had automatically been copied over, as did only one conditional action (but 3 other actions were not copied over from those slides). All button and text names had automatically changed to the default and no advanced actions were associated with buttons or the TEB.
I deleted the one action that had been copied over and then tried to delete the variables too but the project wouldn't let me, saying these were in use somewhere. (Not as far as I could be see.) ...So I chose to use them again.
I renamed the buttons, text boxes etc., recreated the advanced actions and associated them to buttons/TEB etc. Basically set it up as it was.
I previewed it. From the last slide, jumping to slide 2 went to the start of that slide but (problem) jumping to slide 1 went to the last frame.
I am attaching some screenshots FYI. The interactions hinge around the name of the main character in a story (her name is Lani). By clicking enter, the default name stays and slide 2 begins. Otherwise the user can change this name (in the TEB) and then they have to choose gender (boy or girl button). After that, slide 2 starts. So there are three actions: NameChange2 (conditional), Clicking_BoyButton (standard) and Clicking_GirlButton (standard). You can recreate something like it if your interest extends that far!
Unless there is a problem with Cp7, perhaps some form of corruption was copied across between the projects (with the variables that I couldn't delete).
    Thanks again!

  • Should I insert a .cpvc slide or an .mp4 to show a software simulation?

I recorded a software simulation using Captivate 8.  Most of the project is made up of individual slides, except in 2 sections that demonstrate how the screen moves when you swipe on a touch screen.  To capture the swipes, I recorded a new video demo in Captivate.  When this occurs, it creates a .cpvc file which you can then edit.
Should I insert the .cpvc slide directly into my .cptx project or publish it to an .mp4 first and then insert that video?  What are the pros / cons of each method?
I've tried each and have had undesirable results using both methods.  When I inserted the .cpvc file, the published project shows a spinning wheel (as if the video is loading) when the project advances to that slide (although the rest of the transition is smooth).  When I inserted the .mp4 file, the transition is not smooth - the screen goes blank immediately before the .mp4 video begins.
It seems as though using the .cvpc slide is better although the loading / spinning wheel is not desirable in the project.  How can I eliminate this from happening?  Any advice would be appreciated!

I had both an iMac and a MBP years ago - I found that I used them about 50-50%. Inside the house, I'd do what needed doing on a large-screen on the iMac and then, at night, I'd web surf from the den or the bedroom. I liked the large screen on the iMac and the portability of the MBP.
But you introduce two new factors - you already have an external monitor (which, to me, favors the MBP) and you're going to be getting an iPad (which favors the iMac). With the external monitor, you'll have a large screen to work with. With the iPad you'll have portability for web surfing, etc.
I would go with the iMac and the iPad. Even though I'm now down to just a MBP with a 27" external monitor, I don't have an iPad - and that introduces a wholly new part to the equation. Previously, I had to have a MBP only (with no external monitor) because I lived in a nursing home. Now that I'm in my apartment, I use my MBP with external display probably 85-90% of the time and the MBP on the couch or in the bedroom about 10-15% of the time. To be honest, I'll seriously be looking at the 2013 Mac Pros and just use the MBP around the apartment and around town. I'm not planning on getting an iPad, so I'll still need the portability.
Those are just my thoughts and ramblings - if you're going to get an iPad, get an iMac.

  • How do I adjust the system sounds(keyboard and mouse click) in the audio for a software simulation?

Mouse clicks and keyboard strokes very loud in software simulation, but voice is low. I am using Captivate 7

Indeed, I would increase the volume of the voice-over. There is a keystroke sound effect within the C:/Program Files/Adobe/Captivate 7/Gallery/Sound Effects folder, but I'm not sure if that one is directly related to the sound effect used by default.

  • Audio Freezes During Software Simulation

    Hi Everyone,
I hope one of you (maybe Rod?) can help me.
I'm a newbie to Adobe Captivate (~2 months), and am having an issue when I try to record a Software Simulation on Captivate 8. I go through the whole ~13 minute video with narration, but when I go to edit the audio on the individual slide the whole system freezes and I can only force close with the Task Manager. I've tried for ~10 hours, and lost beautiful, ready to publish recordings more times than I want to count.
At first I thought it was my less than optimal computer set up at work, but I get the same result with my video game rig at home which has a video card etc. I've checked a few other sites and forums for solutions, and I'm at a loss.
    A few notes:
    I do have administration rights
My work computer has 2 monitors, but my personal computer only has 1 monitor.
    Pressing ESC doesn't work
I'm showing a process on my company's website, and as such, the Full Screen option is best. Should 800 x 600 be used anyway, even through it will require *tremendous* sliding and panning?
Could it be Preferences or something to do with Set Up?
    Thank you!!
    -Lauren

Hi Lauren. Sorry you're having a bad day.
I would normally put this issue down to using two monitors and having the Slide Audio dialog appearing OFF screen where you cannot interact with it.  But you say you don't get control back when you hit the ESCAPE key.  So the missing dialog issue might not be causing your problem in this case.
You could also try cleaning out your project cache and your TEMP cache folder where your video captures are stored (look in your Preferences settings to find where it is).  Make sure all of your default folders are located on your PC Cdrive and not on a network anywhere.
I would also suggest you first try some tests to see if this issue has anything to do with computer resources being insufficient for the task, or whether the issue might be something else like audio drivers etc.
First, try just capturing a very short section of maybe just a minute or so.  Do you get the same result?  If yes, then this is NOT likely to be a lack of resources due to the size of the capture.
How long is it since you updated your audio drivers on either PC?

  • Captivate 6, Software Simulation, how to rewind when done

I've been tasked with creating some short Captivate 6 software simulation videos on various computer training topics. No problem doing this! And if the user wants to replay the video (uploaded to a Learning Mgmt. System as a SCORM file, not sure of the details since I don't handle the upload) they click the rewind button on the navigation bar. But...now I'm being asked to do something in Captivate that will automatically rewind the video once it reaches the end. Seems that if it's opened again (the user can see the videos he's watched in his Learning History), it's at the end and the user has click Rewind. The only instr. I can find are if you add a video to a Captivate project then you can auto rewind the video on that slide. However, this is the entire software simulation project that I need to rewind back to the beginning. Can this be done? thx!

  • Each time I click the "Open a New Tab" button, how do I make FF open to my homepage and why isn't this default behavior?

Firefox does not default to your homepage when you manually open a new tab. It should do so.
Is there a way to make FF do this? Is it an addon? If so, should this not be default behavior and just be incorporated into the browser?

    # Type ''about:config'' in Firefox's location bar
    # Find ''browser.newtab.url''
    # Double click on it
    # Paste your homepage link into the text box
    # Click ''Ok''

  • Is anyone else trying to use Edge Animation to create software simulations?

We're in the process of evaluating Edge Animate to create software simulations. We want to use it because it has many great HTML5 functions. We're also evaluating Captivate7 - which also has an HTML5 option - but it lacks some of the functionality we're looking for. Like the ability to show users a 'hint' when they hover their cursor over an object. Why that functionality isn't there already - I still can't figure out. It would be create if Adobe could take some of the functionality in Edge Animate and incorporate it into Captivate! It would make an awesome product!
If you're attempted or were successful creating a software simulation using Edge Animate - I would be interested in hearing how you accomplished it. Also looking for some best practices around this idea.
I think Edge Animate would be an amazing product for software simulation if it incorporates a few enhancements.
In the timeline - allow the user to nest things. The timeline can get unwieldy quickly. Would be nice to be able to nest items and then twirl the nested items to hid them - like in AE.
Enable AE functionality with the ability to play one Edge Animate piece inside another.
Provide the ability to add video with transparent backgrounds. We wanted to have someone walk on screen and appear as if they were walking on the software. Can't do it in Edge Animate!
If you have any other ideas or suggestions for creating software simulations in Edge Animate - would be great to hear from the community

    Hi there,
Thanks for your suggestions! We're looking at ways to make the timeline more flexible as far as nesting and/or hiding elements, so hopefully these types of improvements will come as Animate continues to grow. Just wanted to quickly pop in to address a few of your bullet points - hopefully, other Animate users can answer regarding whether they use Animate for software simulation.
Your first two points (I think) can be at least somewhat addressed by using symbols. Each symbol has its own timeline which can contain many elements, but it will appear as a single element in the main (Stage) timeline.
Regarding video, there's currently only one HTML5 browser that natively supports video with alpha transparency: Chrome, using video encoded to the webm format. See here for more info: Alpha transparency in Chrome video - HTML5Rocks Updates
Once other browsers start incorporating native support for video with transparency, this could be pretty cool. But as of now, native browser support is still quite limited.
    Thanks,
    Joe

  • Help! ADF default behavior rejected by end users...

    Hi,
We have built an ADF 11g application during the past months. Last week we had our first user acceptance test with a small group of users. The users were very satisfied about the nice looks of the screens. But they had quite a lot of issues with the default behavior of ADF. I'll provide a list of the most important issues below. I hope more people here at OTN have experienced these issues and perhaps have some workarounds. And perhaps Oracle can use lists like this to improve the next version of ADF...
<ol><li>Multi record edit<br>We have a lot of multi record edit screens. These are all editable tables. Those tables have the following problems:
<ol type="a"><li>Whenever a partial refresh occurs, the whole table gets reloaded. This takes some time, which is uncomfortable. But the main problem here is that the table does not preserve the scroll bar position. The situation can be improved a little bit by setting the <tt>displayRow</tt> attribute to <tt>"selected"</tt> on the table. This will cause the table to show the selected record at the top of the view port after a refresh. But this still confuses the end users. In their experience the records are randomly jumping around.</li>
<li>Records are not always inserted at the bottom. (In fact, they are inserted above the selected record.) End users simply expect records to be inserted at the bottom of the table, no matter what. And I can't disagree with them. Isn't there a setting to achieve this in ADF?</li>
<li>Whenever the user navigates to another record in the editable table, all validation rules on the record he navigates from are fired. That means he cannot leave a required field empty to fill it later. The end users say this is very annoying. We would like to delay all validation until the user presses the Commit button. But as far as I know this is not possible, is it?</li>
<li>The selected record position is not preserved on a full refresh. Our Commit button forces a full refresh of the page. This sounds like a sensible choice to me. However, users tend to click on Commit quite often. But after a full refresh of the page, the currently selected record in a record set is always reset to the first record in the set. In a large data table, this annoys the users very much. Isn't it possible to preserve the selected record over a full refresh?</ol>
<li>Annoying validation errors<br>Many end users are annoyed by the somewhat "persistent" validation error messages. In a larger form or an editable table, users sometimes want to ignore an error and first enter other data, before correcting the error. This is hardly possible, because ADF sets the input focus to fields with errors and keeps popping up windows with a list of fields that have errors. We would like to make the validation less "aggressive". It is okay to give a field a red border if it contains an error. But leave the input focus where it is. And don't show any popup until the user presses the Commit button. And even then show the popup window only once.</li>
<li>ADF BC caching and business rules in the database<br>We have some business rules in our database that automatically fill some fields with default values. We have e.g. a master-details relation, where a value in the master record is calculated based on the values of the detail records. We have set the calculated field in the master record to "refresh after update" and "refresh after insert". Sometimes the value of the field gets refreshed, but sometimes not. Users know that the field should be calculated by "the system", and are asking if they did something wrong if it doesn't. I know we could do the calculation in ADF, but our policy is to have all business rules in the database and to not repeat ourselves (DRY). Is there another way to guarantee that the calculated value in the master record gets updated after an update or insert of one or more detail records?</li>
<li>Partial refresh loses data<br>If a field causes a partial submit to occur, fields in the same record that were not (partial) submitted before lose their data. This forces us to enable partial submit on all fields. But that causes a delay after moving the focus to the next field and validations to be fired too early.</li>
    </ol>
I've numbered the items above, please use these number as a reference if you're posting an answer to a specific question.
Please let me know any solution, even if it is only a partial solution. We've a nasty situation now. Our application is (nearly) finished, but it is blocked for production by the users because of the behavior of the ADF framework, on which we have very little influence. We can't blame the users for that, most of their criticism is fully justified. So we have to come up with a good solution for these issues before we can go to production. So any help would be highly appreciated!
    Best regards,
    Bart Kummel
    PS.
We're using JDeveloper/ADF 11.1.1.1.0, we deploy to a WebLogic 10.3.1 server and we have an Oracle 10g database. We're using the full ADF stack: ADF Business Components, ADF Bindings and ADF Faces.

    Hi Bart,
I can answer for few of your questions.

  • How do i remove popups in software simulation - captivate 8

    Hi,
I have recently moved to captivate 8 - straight from captivate 4. I have recorded a software simulation and am now in the process of editing it. On some screens captivate has captured the popup messages you get when you hover over a button or link, in the past in captivate 4 i would copy the background out of captivate, remove the pop using paint or photoshop and paste the edited background back in to the simulation.
In captivate 8 i finding i am unable to do this. When i preview the screen capture the pop up message appears, however when i look at the background there is no pop up. It seems to be there as part of the screen capture, if i use the skimmer to run over the timeline the popup appears in the last few seconds, if i trim the slide of the seconds the pop up remains. I have been unable to find any options for removal of the pop ups.
Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
    Thanks
    Glenn

Yeah, somehow those tooltips are animated in the background slide.
My fix: edit that background slide in Photoshop, ensure it shows what you want (i.e. not the tooltip), copy (or save) that flattened background image, back to Captivate, create a new slide after the 'odd' one, paste the background slide (merge with background), copy over any other elements from the 'odd' slide...then delete the odd slide.
There is an option to capture tool-tips or not, I believe, in the capture setup/preferences...

  • What should the"default behavior" be for WiFi network connections?

I Have been able to at least temporarily fix the plethora of problems encountered after downloading Mountain Lion to my 2009 17" MBP just ten days ago.  Thanks to the time and effort of so many posters that are much more savvy than me, I successfully executed the steps suggested in many of the posts and with good results.  It surely beats running down to the Apple store and being told that I am the only one with a problem.
Okay,  I've  realized that I don't really know what the default behavior of the WiFi network connection should be?
    Specifically:
Should the Wi-Fi drop down in Network always be" looking for networks", even though I am obviously on my Network?
Should the Wi-Fi be connected at all times even when your computer is in sleep mode- or deep sleep mode?  There have been so many problems with Wi-Fi dropping off, slow or hanging loads, etc.
I unchecked "ask to join networks, in Network preferences thinking it might stop looking for networks when it doesn't need to because I'm already on mine.  I do see my neighbors (four neighbors) in the drop down in Network.
How do you get into Time Capsule's settings, to check speeds, especially ping?  What should the ideal settings be?
How do you know if your DHCP license is renewed? I've heard that feature isn't working and may be the culprit to some of the Wi-Fi problems.
I'll look forward to your help in understanding more about this.  I've been in the support  area a lot lately, I've read plenty of definitions, and explanations of the different options to choose from in Apple's support area, but nowhere have I seen anything that explains what the default behavior should be or perform  like.
    Thanks, as always.

Generally, you don't want to tweak the wifi settings. It pretty much takes care of itself. The caveat to that is, of course, if you're experiencing problems.
The 'looking for networks' behaviour only happens when you log in, wake the mac from sleep OR when you click on the wifi icon. You clicking on it tells the mac  "I want to see what networks are available" - so it does a scan for you to check to see if any new networks have appeared since you last clicked on it (or woke/logged in). In short, if you don't want it to look for new networks, don't click on the icon!
Unchecking the 'ask to join networks' option only applies when your mac detects a new network (such as when it wakes) that you haven't already authorised; it'll ask you to confirm whether you want to join it or not. Otherwise, if the network is open it'll join automatically. You should keep this selected if you travel around with your Mac. It's a good idea to know what network you're on before you start plugging in passwords or typing other things into the mac.
There is a utility that you can use for ping and traceroute called 'Network Utility'. Click on the Spotlight icon in the top right of your screen and type "Network' and you should see it at the top of the list. Hit 'return' to open it.
DHCP licences are normally renewed automatically by your router every 24 hours. Again, there's no reason to be messing about with that unless you're experiencing problems.
If you're experiencing wifi dropout, let us know, and we'll make some suggestions, but if you're not, you're best leaving your mac to manage the background processes. It knows what it's doing!

  • Problem with multiple output for software simulated project

When a software simulated project in captivate is published more than thrice, the output is not generated properly, i.e not in-line with the project. Is this a problem with my system or due to some settings in captivate which is not activated?

    Thanks for the suggestions Malcolm,
They're very handy app's for sure, but unfortunately they didn't fix the problem.
Detour DID overide the routing for iChat's general bleeps & noises, but not the audio stream from video conferences (which is the problem I want to fix).
If anyone has any other suggestions for fixes, I'd appreciate it!
    Thanks again,

  • Published software simulation not displaying correctly when published

    Hello,
When viewing a Captivate 6 software simulation either through the Preview mode or when published, screens will 'break up' at different points - part of the previous screen will stay in view when it moves to the next screen. This doesn't happen for the first couple of times it is viewed, which is a worry as you never know who/when it is going to happen.
Once the projects is copied over to a new blank project it will be fine for a few views and then do the same again - it is not always at the same place.
Does anyone know what may be causing this?
    Thanks,

You might try de-selecting the Advanced Project Compression option in the preferences:
