Undo "Make Independent Clips" ?? HELP!

Well, I had thought I made some subclips, but instead of clips they were sequences. Not sure how that happened - I did command U, but anyway..
When I was trying to figure out why that happened, I went to "Modify -> Made Independent Clips" thinking maybe that was the culprit.
I realized that wasn't it, and made my subclips from the sub-sequences that were there. So now I have all these subclips (and I deleted all the sub-sequences).
However, I go to look at the subclips and they are all distorted. In the viewer it says that they are scaled up to 225, I don't know why that would happen.. And in the Canvas they are all pixely and the resolution is messed up. When I scale them down to 100, the video is the size of a thumbnail.
I have NO idea what happened, because I'm almost positive that the only thing I did was click "Make independent clips" and then create the subclips.
Can anyone help me fix this?? I wish final cut express had an undo history..

I know FCE has an "undo", every program in existence does. I was referring to an undo history, ie. photoshop, which will tell you what each undo actually undoes.
I also know what "make subclip" does. What I didn't realize was that if you try to make a subclip using cmd-u with in & out points in the timeline it does NOT create a subclip, but in fact creates a sub-sequence. To make the subclip you have to be making the in & out points in the viewer, not the canvas.
When I realized that was what I had done, I created subclips from those sub-sequences, and then deleted the sub-sequences. I had also selected "Make independent clips".
I don't know how or why the frame settings of my clips got changed and scaled, because I obviously would not have scaled them. Maybe it is some quirky setting that is going on, or maybe it has something to do with my making subclips from the sub-sequences that I then deleted. I have no idea.
Thanks for trying to help, but sounds like we're both lost on this. I have 4 sequences in this project so I don't want to risk making anything worse. In addition to the 4 sequences, I have 4 original source files that are each 1 hour long. From those, I made many subclips so I could easily find footage I was looking for. If I now go back and select "Remove Subclip Limits" will this effect every subclip in my project?? I don't know if I can risk that.
I will have to just go back to the original source clip and create new subclips from that, deleting the subclips that became skewed.
Thanks anyway.

  • Make Independent Clip is greyed out

With many of my clips, Make Independent Clip is greyed out, and I can't figure out why.  Please help, and thank you!

select a clip in the timeline or the browser and hit command-9 and tell us what codec (also called compressor) , frame rate etc  If you're material is not in a fcp friendly format, that may be the problem.  I also know that you can only use this command in certain circumstances.  Had to do it a week or so ago and it took a little fooling til the option was available.

  • How do I make a clip "independant" in FCP 7.0.3?

I have two imported DV clips.
    - One is 45 minutes long
    - One is about 15 minutes long
I want to break these two captured files up into "chunks" so I can edit them in the timeline without even referencing the original DV clips.
Reason: editing nightmare I am trying to resolve.
    - I know how to use "mark dv start/stop" in each DV clip to segment my DV clips into my original "shots" on DV tape.
    - I know how to make "subclips" from the 'segments".
What I don't know how to do is to make these new clips TOTALLY independant of the source footage because my edits are getting completely messed up.  Someone suggested I make the new segment clips "independant" clips, but I can't seem to find that option anywhere.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

    Thank you ALL!
These are some of the best answer I have got so far, but let me run a few things by you and see what you think...
My original, orignal question was something like "How do I import and break up my video so I can edit my shots on the timeline?"
My real goal, as you might guess, is to make FCP do the grunt work so I can get my "shots" from the DV camera into the timeline so I can cut them, move them around, synch them to audio etc.  That's why FCP is called a non-linear editor.  Right?
I really don't want to have to export and then reimport a bunch of video clips because that's a lot of work for ME.  I know that you can do this, and I know how to do it, but come on!  I want to make FCP do that work, and theorietically it should be able to do this.
From digging around on the internet, and from asking multiple questions on this forum, here is the workflow I have peiced together.  (I am not sure if it will work yet because I still have to test it...)
I think the complete answer is:
    1) Capture video to a project (the whole tape)
    2) Select the master clip (the whole tape) in the browser and choose "Mark/ DV Start/Stop" (just like you said)
    3) Select the resulting video "segments" in the browser and choose "Make Clip" from the modify menu (this converts the original captured segments into subclips)
    4) Select the resulting video subclips and drag them to the timeline for editing (I am not sure if I also need to "Remove Clip Limitations" from the subclips as well, but at least I know where to look if my 5 steps don't work)
    5) Right click on the video subclips in the timeline and choose "make independant clip"
The bottom line is that I am trying to get FCP to do the grunt work of keeping track of my video ins/outs, segments, subclips and independant clips without me having to manage 100 files on my hard drive in the project folder!  The whole point of NLE is to let the computer figure out how to arrange and render all of your stuff based on information that is stored in the FCP file.
    Thoughts?

  • Correct way to create a small independent clip from a larger clip

    In a recent post:
Tara Easley replied to: How to export a short clip from within a larger scene?
    With:
"After you make your in and out points, highlight the one minute segment and go to Modify. Then click "Make Independent Clip". It should save just the 1 minute clip in your bins section. You will need to change it's name, but that should work."
My question is whether this process will make an exact "stand alone file" with duplicate quality as the original clip or is there another method that must be used to maintain the original quality of the original clip and get a new independent file?
    TIA,
    Ken

    MartinR wrote:File > Export > QuickTime Movie.
Okay, that is as I thought. FCE cannot help me 'chop' out a portion of the original file as it came from the camera (because it is in the wrong codec to work in FCE.)
Would Final Cut Pro be able to work with more file formats? Or does it also need to have cuts converted to AIC?
I think, because I am a beginner, that I am barking up the wrong tree about editing original footage since it really would also have to be converted to AIC before it would be useable in FCE. I"ll just be sure to save all of my original files from the camera and then 'crop out' what I need as separate files for archive by the method you named above.
    Thank You,
    Ken

  • Independent clips

Hi everyone. How do you make independent clips so that they stay permanent in the sequence without re-rendering/ asking for the sources when you move or open the project?

Don't think so, although I spent a bunch of time rearranging media and graphic files yesterday (keeping them on the same drive, but moving around in folders) and when I reopened the project, fcp had maintained the connection between the clips and the media (which surprised me).
First, fcp uses the term "independent" in a different way so perhaps you might avoid using this term.
At the moment, this is the way fcp works. Fooling with elements of an ongoing fcp project at the finder level is dangerous if you don't know what you're doing (and sometimes even if you do) and is not recommended.
Now occasionally there can be a problem and fcp will lose the "connection" with some of the media when it shouldn't (when you haven't moved or renamed it at the finder level). If there is happening to you, post back with more specifics and will try and troubleshoot.
You can always export a selfcontained quicktime with item settings of clips or sequences which you can then import back into fcp. Perhaps this method will work for you.
Also, nesting material can sometimes help you avoid excessive rerendering.
Hope this is of some help.

  • Subclips of Independent Clip all have the SAME audio

I have a bunch of DV streams I want to edit in FCP, but I discovered that the audio is out of sync in most of them. Each stream has multiple shots in it, each of which I want to make into a subclip. Here's how I approached the problem:
    1. I gave the out-of-sync DV stream a reel name in the Browser.
    2. I opened the clip in the Viewer, set In and Out points to the extremes, and dragged it into the timeline.
    3. I unlinked the video and audio, shifted the video to get it in sync, cropped the ends of the video and audio to start and end at the same time, and relinked the video with the audio.
    4. I selected Make Independent Clip from the context menu.
    5. I dragged the synced clip back into the Browser and changed its name.
    6. I opened the new clip in the Viewer, selected the individual shots with In and Out points, and made each into a subclip.
For each clip, the first subclip I created in this way worked perfectly, but for some reason the subsequent subclips all have the same audio as the first subclip. What am I doing wrong?
    ~ Joel

I had the sync problem when capturing DV footage until I found and deleted the FC preferences file. I found this worked for several FC problems so I found a utility that saves the prefs before a problem starts. Then you can just replace the corrupted prefs file with the saved good one and you're fixed. I posted this problem to the forum and never found an answer as to why the capture sync gets hosed so I went with what works. I would work on why the captured footage is out of sync in the first place as described above.
Sorry but I do not have an answer for your sub-clip problem, just questions. Did you capture your DV tape as one individual file? Is the audio recorded on tape 48k and captured as 48k? I know I used to do the same thing as you to correct the offset... unlink the video & audio and bump the audio track until the sync was corrected. As long as I edited the clips on the timeline, everything stayed in sync and I just worked around the problem. For me, the prefs file was the answer.

  • Making an Independent Clip

I am working with still images and want to take an indivudual clip and convert it into a quicktime so that I can use the TimeReMap and have control over timing and ease in/ease out.
When I click on the clip my "Make Independent Clip" is greyed out. I have seen this done but am not getting it. I could make a new project with this one clip in it and make a QT.
    Any suggestions?
    ~Mark

Okay, then you can do what I suggested in my previous post.
You can either take that clip and put it in a separate sequence to export it out and bring it back in (be sure to use "Current Settings" so you don't adjust the quality with compression), OR you can just set an IN at the beginning of the clip on your timeline (cmd + I) and an OUT an the end (cmd + O) and export it right from there (FCP wil only export whatever is between your In and Out point).
Make sure it's fully rendered before you export it.
Figure that'll work alright for you?

  • Can't make sequence clips independent

I've put a clip onto the timeline and cut using a razor. When I try "Modify > Make Sequence Clips Independent" nothing happens.
I notice the duration of Sequence 1 in the browser is 00:00:00;00 but the duration of my clip is 00:01:39;24. Would that be a clue? Shouldn't they, at this time, be the same? I'm a total newbie, so I'm clueless.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.
FYI, I'm going through Tom Wolsky's book, "Final Cut Express 2 Editing Workshop" (page 67 step 16) if you own that and using FCE 3.

It turns out I had two projects open and the Clip was on the timeline of the other project.

  • Modify Make Sequence Clips independent - But the can't be renamed independe

I'm on Tom's book page 89 (FCE workshop)
I've taken a full Clip or main clip (like Temple) and dropped it in the timeline.
Cut it up with the razor blade and then Modify>Make Sequence Clips independent.
Then I dragged clips to new bin and tried to rename one, but all clips get renamed.
I'm confused, I thought they were independent.
Am I misreading this or doing something wrong?
    Thanks for an assist.

I see what I did, the book didn't say to 'Select' the clips first. They must be selected before one chooses Modify>Make Sequence Clips Independent.

  • I have a line (stroke, no fill) and an eps graphic. I'm trying to make a clipping mask of the single line art but all it does is cut the eps graphic instead of making a mask?

I have an eps graphic and a single line drawing 2 pt wt. I'm trying to make a clipping mask of the line drawing. When I tried it all that happened was the eps graphic was cut in half. I did the exact steps from AdobeTV except the line drawing [pink camera.ai*@1200% (CMYK/Outline)] is an ai pen line drawing instead of a vector graphic and the other is [vector flower lillies.eps @ 100% (RGB/Preview)]. If you need more info on the graphics please tell me where to find it and I will send it.
This is all because the eps graphic has a white background. I have tried everything I know including opening it in Photoshop and deleting the background and it always pastes with a white background. My thought was if I can't change the background then maybe I can make a clipping mask of the pink camera and just paste it in front.
Please help this has been a thorn in my side for too long...

please post a screen shot of the graphic(s) as it's hard to understand exactly what you are asking
IF these are 'vector' graphics there should be no need for a clipping mask--also--if the .eps files are small (MB or KB) try posting one of those

  • How to make a clipping mask in this particular case?

Okay, Just to begin I know how to make a clipping mask, but for the case that I'm going to present right now I just can't figure out what mistake I am doing (if any). However I am a beginner.

In the link to above tutorial on how to make a medieval scrol I'm stuck at step 25 and would be glad to anyone who helped.
As said in step 25 that expand the appearance of the scroll and select the two then clip the mask. In th above picture I have just selected the scroll to show how it looks.
Now as you can see in the image below I have expanded the appearance of the paper scroll. Then I selected the paper scrol and the yellowish green grunge background placed below it. And the moment I hit Ctrl+7 (in windows) or Command+7 (in Mac) to make a clipping mask the error that showed up has been highlighted.
One more thing, I have clipped masks before too in the same tutorial given above but I don't know what has gone wrong for me in this step.
    Please help.

Why would you want a clipping mask? I don’t see a reason for it.
However, for what you want I would use the Pathfinder panel to combine all the paths into one shape. First use the ungroup and release compound commands a few times each, to make sure you have nothing grouped. Then press the top left button in the Pathfinder p[panel. This should produce one closed path that just surrounds the scroll.

  • Organization approach re: capture, logging, independent clips

I'm learning FCE to edit my showreel from DVcam source tapes via a deck with device control. The media sources are existing montages, individual commercials and VFX shots/scenes. Ultimately, the edited montages or exerpts will become distinct chapters of a DVD, some clips or sequences showing up in different montages (ultimately DVD chapters).
Based on what I read in FCE Help and Lisa Brenneis' manual, I'm beginning to think I should use either "capture now" or "capture project" to import, then convert all to independent clips and subdivide/rename & log after the fact. (I'd back up on DVD-ROM.) Two reasons this seems to be the way to go...
1.) The capture session is at a facility and I need to minimize time spent there in capture. And 2.) The master/affiliate clip relationship seems to bring a level of complication I'm not sure I'm ready to handle yet.
I'd appreciate any advice, given the nature of the source media and eventual use, regarding the best capture method and any drawbacks to working with independent clips. Thank you.

Changing the name of a master clip after the capture is sort of a no no in FCP. There's other columns for information if you need to add it to the clip.
You can rename subclips all you want but not master clips, because FCP uses this captured QT media file name for reconnection (must match name of clip in browser if it's a master clip).
You can reimport all the master clips in a flash... would that help?
If you select a sequence, with the clips, it will still reconnect BTW.

  • Make sub clip from a sequence?

I am a recent convert from FCP and am used to placing multiple clips on a sequence and making sub clips from the sequence.  I shoot a lot of 20 -30 minute interviews and this sub clipping from the time line in FCP was my workflow to select the best sound bites.
    What am I missing?
It appears you can only make sub clips from the source window?
    Help
    Thank you

Thank you, that is so easy - now that you showed me.
Yes as I have several clips from each segment of interviews (especially if they take breaks, or I to need shut off the camera) then I scurb through them all, by subject, which may cross over multiple clips to make sub clips and rate them based on a star system to do final assembly in a new sequence.  If do this in the source monitor I would have to load dozens and dozens of clips, one at a time to preview.
Can you suggest a better workflow?
Maybe with Prelude?  I have not even opened this app yet

  • Connect Independent Clips (Play All)

    Hello,
I am new to DVD Studio -- have a fairly simple question I think:
I am making a DVD that will contain a number of short vignettes/films. Each film is independent of the other but I would like a "Play All" option so a viewer can easily watch one after the other after the other.
I know I can accomplish this by compressing all the clips into one big movie, making chapters, and having the chapters selected return to the main menu, but I don't want to have to put all the clips into a single mpeg file (I would rather do subtitles and everything independtly on a clip by clip basis as I work on them).
So, is there an easy way to make all the independent clips play back to back ? Is that the "story" feature ? I played around with it but couldn't figure it out.
    Thanks,
    Damon

Stories would be the easiest approach and the easiest way to do the stories would be to place them all on one track with chapter markers between each clip
The Play All Story would include all Chapter Markers
If you want just to play a section you add just the marker to the section
For instance if there are 3 clips, with Markers 1,2,3 - PLay All Story would have markers 1,2,3 - Just section 1 would have just marker 1, etc.
    http://dvdstepbystep.com/passelections.php
    http://dvdstepbystep.com/stories_details.php
There are also other approaches, for instance you can make two stories for each seperate track, so track 1, 2 & 3 would each have a Play All Story and a Play Sol story (each would be identical with one marker, the difference being the end jumps for the stories would be either set to the next track you want to play (Play All) or return to the Menu (Play Solo)
And the last way would be scripting.
Button action would be to a script
mov GRPM (whichever you want) SPRM 8//this sets the GRPM to the button that was pressed. Buttons are in increments of 1024 so easier to divide by 1024 to keep track
    div GPRM (whatever), 1024 //makes it 1-4
//assumes button 1 is play track 1, button 2 is play track 2, button 3 is play track 3, button 4 is play all
    Jump Track 1 if GPRM = 1
    Jump Track 2 if GRPM = 2
    Jump Track 3 if GPRM = 3
Jump Track 1 if GPRM = 4 //both selections 1 and 4 will go to track 1 to start
Then the end jumps for each track (could be rolled into one script but you can make a few may be easier to follow)
    So for track 1
JUMP Menu, if GPRM = 1 //(play all was not selected so return to menu)
    Jump Track 2
    So for track 2
JUMP Menu, if GPRM = 3 //(play all was not selected so return to menu)
    Jump Track 3
Track 3 will always return to menu since it is last in either event, so just set end jump
