  • Cannot drop old undo tablespace. Cause: active rollback segment

    dear all.
    db: oracle 10.2.0.1
    os: rhel as version 5 64 bits.
    This is a testing database. And my database is online and open. But i can free the external usb disk that contains my ols undotbs.
    I want to drop old undo tablespace but this is not possible.
    1.- In order to open my database i had my datafile( '/mnt/hdext/back_plelds/undotbs02.dbf') offline drop, and then i can to open my database.
    2.- When i try to delete my old undo tablespace im getting this error:
    SQL> drop tablespace undotbs1 including contents and datafiles;
    drop tablespace undotbs1 including contents and datafiles
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01548: active rollback segment '_SYSSMU1$' found, terminate dropping
    tablespace
    3.- My default undo_tablespace is another that i was created before step 1.
    SQL> sho parameter undo_ta
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    undo_tablespace string UNDOTMP
    SQL>
    Well i search in metalink ORA-01548 code error and in 18947.1 doc whows me that the solution is:
    Action: Shut down instances that use the active rollback segments in the
    tablespace and then drop the tablespace.
    4.- I try to shutdown but im getting:
    SQL> shutdown immediate;
    ORA-00376: file 10 cannot be read at this time
    ORA-01110: data file 10: '/mnt/hdext/back_plelds/undotbs02.dbf'
    SQL>
    This /mnt/hdext is an external USB disk and i have all permissions. I exported tables without any problem and i can read all files.
    i search un metalink again ora codes (ORA-00376 ORA-01110) and the doc id: 427801.1 shows in the solution:
    Drop the old undo tablespace instead of making it offline.
    but when i try to drop the tablespace it shows the error describe in the step 2.
    Facts:
    - my tablespace UNDOTBS1 is ONLINE. I put in offline and this is not the solution.
    - This is the status of my rollback segments:
    SQL> select segment_name, status from dba_rollback_segs where
    2 tablespace_name='UNDOTBS1';

    - I have the note (Unable to drop und tablespace In this article describe the problem but this is not the same. The difference is that i cannot drop the rollback segment that describe in step 2.
    SQL> drop rollback segment "_SYSSMU1$";
    drop rollback segment "_SYSSMU1$"
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-30025: DROP segment '_SYSSMU1$' (in undo tablespace) not allowed
    in metalink the doc id: 173696.1 shows the solution:
    Action:     Check the undo segment name and reissue statement if necessary.
    i cannot drop the rollback_segment
    What can i do ???
    thanks a lot.

    in step 4 did you try with shutdown abort?
    If its still does not work then create another new table space with new file and then swtich to that tablespace http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/undo.htm#sthref1504Khurram

  • UNDO tablespace increase more more .... spaces

    I checked my Oracle database. I found undo tablespace increase more more spaces.
    from 10G , now 40G
    undo_retention = 15 minutes
    Please help me
    How I tune and monitor for track this problem?

    Hello HunterX,
    You have not indicated which version of database & on what platform. The Version number & platform is very important...I tell you why. Because i had the same issue with my database and handled successfully.
    Please check the BUG No. Note:2660394.8 & also note no. 271119.1.
    This explains that Undo tablespace is used and after the expiry of 15 minutes it does not use the EXPIRED extents. It again allocates the NEW extents out of your segment of the tablespace....And leads to continuous growing of UNDO Tablespace...
    Do the follwoing i feel would be appropriate...Rest you can decide it better....
    1. Create a New UNDO Tablespace may be undo_new of smaller size..
    2. Do not keep autoextend ON and put some max size...may be 1 GB. Do not put it unlimited.
    3. Stop the DB Instance
    4. Change the name of new UNDO Tablespace in INIT.ORA file
    5. Restart the DB Instance.....
    6. drop the Old Tablespace UNDO & delete the datafile...
    If stopping of DB Instance is not possible...(for production server), i hv few command which does the above on-line. But i do not remember them at this time...I will hv to refer my docs. If you feel i can try that for you...otherwise you may follwo above points.
    Hope that helps to you. Thanks.

  • ORA-30036: unable to extend segment by 8 in undo tablespace 'APPS_UNDOTS1'

    Hi,
    A user who is trying to run a report on an EBS system, gets the following error from the application end:
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-30036: unable to extend segment by 8 in undo tablespace 'APPS_UNDOTS1'
    I would have expected to see this ORA error in the Oracle database alert log as well, however this is not the case.
    I increased the size of the APPS_UNDOTS1 tablespace from 1700mb with autoextend to max 3000mb, however it seems that the tablespace is not extending beyond it's original size of 1700mb. In TOAD, I see that the tablespace has not grown even after the user ran the report again. Any idea why? Is there perhaps something that needs to be adjusted on the application side as well?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    The tablespace is not extending and this error is not written to the alert log, but I found a trace file with the following information....
    ORA-30036 happens when trying to extend undo segment SYSSMU91258636580$ (usn=9) by 8 blocks
    Reason: Fail to Steal
    Current undo tablespace APPS_UNDOTS1 (tsn=1)
    undo tablespace current size 218240 blks, maxsize 218240 blks, fixed sized
    Undo Retention (reactive): 936, Parameter Undo Retention: 900, Tuned Undo Retention: 936, High threshold Undo Retention: -2
    Retention Guarantee FALSE
    Does anyone know how to solve this "Fail to Steal" problem?
    Btw, the query SELECT DISTINCT STATUS, SUM(BYTES), COUNT(*) FROM DBA_UNDO_EXTENTS GROUP BY STATUS; returns about 55 expired extents, therefore there are still available extents to "steal" from. So why does this fail?

  • 0RA-30036: Unable to extend segment by 8 in Undo tablespace

    Hi,
    I am getting this error " 0RA-30036: Unable to extend segment by 8 in Undo tablespace ". Please Advise me how i can solve this error. Just to let u know that I don't have extra space in my Partition at OS level to increase the size of Undo tablespace. Please Advise what is the alternate option to solve this problem.
    I know that I can't do coalesce on Undo tablespace any other way.

    Do frecuent commits.
    whats the size of your temp tablespace.
    you can try reducing its size and giving to undo / rollback.
    try droping unused indexes.
    But man..... strart planning your space and make an annual budget for disks.

  • ORA-30036: unable to extend segment by 8 in undo tablespace 'UNDO'

    Hello,
    I have an OWB Mapping (which translates into a MERGE query) that often fails with the above error. I wanted to have more information on UNDO. What uses most UNDO?
    Thanks.

    Dear mugunthan,
    One little, tiny correction that i want to make. I can get what you wanted to say when you said "increase the tablespace". Normally we are not increasing the size of the tablespace, we are increasing the size of the "datafiles" in that tablespace. That is tricky and how words can change everything i know but just for the information :)
    I think the OP's undo tablespace size is 100% full and the auto extensible ability is disabled. He needs to either increase the size of the datafile in the undo tablespace slightly more or enable the auto extensible of one more datafiles (if exists) to a particular new and more bigger size.
    Regards.

    To check for UNDO and TEMP tablespaces that do not obey the extent size rules you can run the following query:
    select tablespace_name, initial_extent, next_extent, pct_increase, min_extlen
    from dba_tablespaces t,
    (select tablespace_name tbspc,
    sum(bytes) tbspc_sz,

    ( initial_extent < (tbspc_sz - blk_sz * num_files) / 4096

    or next_extent != initial_extent

    and tablespace_name = tbspc
    and tablespace_name != 'SYSTEM'
    and ( contents = 'TEMPORARY'
    or tablespace_name in (select tablespace_name from dba_rollback_segs));My cases i found iitial extent 65536 and min_exlen 65536

    What is the preferred why to shrink the UNDO Tablespace ?

    2.     To shrink (resize) the exists one .

    2.     To shrink (resize) the exists one .The first one would be a better approach as there may be users who are still using the old tablespace. So for all of them, you would see a Pending Offline status. Once all teh segments release the old information stored in them, you can remove the tablespace. By trying to shrink the tablespace, you actually would be increasing the chances to get the 1555 error and also, this won't be happening as already there is a used space in teh datafile.

    1) resize your datafile to 4194303 * db_block_size
    alter database datafile < path/filename > resize <4194303 * db_block_size> ;
    you find db_block_size by:

    SQL> connect / as sysdba

    or by simply have a look in the pfile (init<SID>.ora) in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs

  • Problem with UNDO tablespace

    Hi guys.
    Our database has 50GB of undo tablespace. I decided to create a second undo tablespace and switch to the new one. Since doing that yesterday, the size of the old undo is 49GB (was thinking that the values will drop to zero) and the new tablespace keeps increasing in size! Its size now is about 20GB. I do have the following question.
    a) If I restart the database, it the value of the old undo going to fall to zero?
    b) undo_retention=86400. Setting this value to a lesser value say 800seconds, it is going to act the performance of the database? Is it going to release the space on the old undo?
    Thanks and any help is appreciated.
    David

    The undo tablespace will not automatically shrink size, since you have a new undo tablespace in place. You can drop the old one if you don't plan to use it.
    Set lower undo_retention will certainly help to contain the undo space usage. However you should query v$undostat and v$rollstat to estimate the amount of undo space required for the current workload then size the undo tablespace accordingly. Turn off the auto extend on undo tablespace.
