Undocumented feature? Syncing iPod to Apple TV

Looking into an apple tv as a replacement for mac mini media server, one question i have though is if im going to move all our media to an apple tv as a repository for media also - can you actually hook an ipod/iphone to it and sync music and video from the ATV to the device?

alexmorris wrote:
but apple implies the device can be used as a standalone device also - almost as a mac-less setup?
yes, but anything on the appletv would stay on the appletv. you cannot transfer it to any other device in this mode.
alexmorris wrote:
but going the other way when you buy music and films on the ATV would you then have to sync back to a mac before adding to an ipod? that sounds like a very slow and convaluted process and pretty inefficient use of drive space too?
yes anything purchased on the appletv auto-syncs back to your itunes library.
bear in mind the appletv is not intended to be a storage device.

if thats the case i think the mac mini probably offers a better round-trip experience with less kit required and a unified repository for multiple macs sharing the same media also.
possibly, but bear in mind that HD movie rentals are only available on the appletv.

  • Music stops with Etymotic earphones and undocumented feature in iPod

I have been using these Etymotic ER-6 with an iPod 4th generation without any problem, but after upgrading to an iPod Video, things have not been as smooth.
It seems that there is a new undocumented feature in the iPod Video. If you unplug your earphones, the music stops automatically. Which is great. The problem is that the Etymotic earphones have a 90 degree plug, prone to move sideways. When it moves, the music stops.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Haven't had a "problem" with that feature as my connector is straight however, it would have been nice if they applied the same feature for "Dock Removal" so it pauses when lifted from a dock.

  • How do I enable my new macbook pro to become my default computer to sync all my apple devices-iphone 4, touch, ipod classic, nano?  My five year old dell's hard drive has only 2GB of space available and is currently the computer I use for all these device

I have a new macbook pro that I wish to sync all my apple devices--ipodclassic,nano,iphone4,touch-- that are currently synced with a 5 year old windows based computer with only 2GB of available hard drive space. How can I do this and maintain all of my info-contacts, songs, photos etc without losing this data< Thanks

you can either update to lion/ios5 and use the cloud to sync or you can plug in said devices and sync them with your MBP instead of your dell via a tethered usb connection.
also, sign into your itunes store account on your mac.

  • Sync iPod via shared iTunes?

I've got all of my music on my Mac G5 and have a Windows XP machine networked to it via wireless network. I bought my wife an iPod Mini and was wondering if there is some way for her to transfer songs onto her iPod using the networked Windows machine, even though the music files reside on my Mac?
I'd like to do it this way since she uses Windows at work and would like to sync things at home and at work.
    Thanks in advance!

it's currently not possible. bluetooth on the Touch supports headsets only.

  • Sync iPod Photo with iTunes 10.x

    Hello my friends!
I'm using SL and iTunes 10. I found my old iPod Photo with it's 30GB hdd.
I tried to hook it up to my iMac and sync but iTunes doesn't reconize the iPod.
Is the support for old iPods dropped or is there another reason I can't sync it?
    Thanks!

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

Try removing and then reinstalling the Apple software using these instructions.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
The above containes a link for XP. Also. make sure you install the correct Apple software, It comes in 32 and 64 bit and you need the one that is the same as the computer OS

But I must point out that leaving the iPhoto Library on the external is worth considering. Your internal drive would be better off without having to carry the photos.
When you booted with the external connected and you were asked for the library, did you try navigating to the Library in on the external drive?

  • Syncing iPod in Vista

I wish Apple would clearly address this issue on their support page. From what is written there, it seems as though iTunes IS compatible w/ Vista (aside from a few 'compatibility issues'). I've called Customer Support on several occasions and have been told, finally, that iTunes is NOT COMPATIBLE with Windows Vista. If this is the case, then please just say this on your support page and make it very clear that syncing iPod on a Vista-based machine is just not possible yet.
And is it just me, or is this issue taking Apple WAY too long to get resolved?? I would really love to get back to using (and updating, specifically) my iPod!
iPod w/ Video 30gb   Other OS

And its worse than that ... it seems its something to do with the memory management in the iTunes program and not the USB connection as I first suspected. Here was my issue... I could not sync more than about 1 gb of data to my Video iPod. Now when my big back log of podcasts is downloaded ... BSOD with the message KERNELSTACK_INPAGEERROR.

When syncing iPod touch to MacBook, I have selected to sync only events newer than 360 days. Yet I get message that sync will change 8000 events on "this computer"  most of which are years old and many are recurring events.  I'm afraid to proceed with sync.

Having the same problem here. As a first time mac user, Apple has certainly made a bad first impression.
For me, the issue seems to occur when transferring files between computers that are connected to the same access point (when transferring files from wired computers on the network there is no issue). My vista laptop and every laptop I have tried has worked perfectly fine with this access point so I am 100% convinced it is the mac. Basically when I copy the files, after about 100mb, I am unable to access anything on the local network or internet until I restart Airport. The weird thing is that even though I am unable to access anything, the airport utility says it is connected. I might also note that the wireless signal strength is full.
If I can't get this figured out in a few days, this computer is going back to the store where it came from and I will officially label myself anti-mac. This type of issue is just unacceptable for something so main stream.

  • ITunes displays -48 error message when syncing iPod Nano on Windows XP

My girlfriend's mom's iPod Nano ran out of charge while jogging so she decided to charge it on her daughter's iHome. The next day she went to use her iPod but it was totally empty of all music and files. When she tried to sync it to iTunes, she received an eror message stating, "An unknown error has occurred (-48)" from iTunes and a Windows message stating that some iPod folder/file was corrupted.
If anyone receives such a message, I was able to correct it by:
-Plugging in your iPod to your PC
    -Ignore the error messages
    -Go to My Computer
-Find your iPod's drive letter (ie. G:)
-Right-click on it and select Properties
-Go to Tools Tab >Error-checking and select Check Now
You should be able to sync your iPod as before. I do not claim to be an expert so be warned that it may not work for you. Good luck!
