Unencrypted backup asks for password
As you can see from the screen capture, I have an unencrypted backup for my wife's iPhone that was created during the iOS 5 upgrade process. The problem is that the restore asks for a password, and doesn't recognize the password I would have used.
Again, as you can see, the padlock icon is missing in the device backup line; it is definitely not encrypted. Also, I installed Elcomsoft Password Recovery and it says that this backup is an unencrypted backup.
I had other backups that were encrypted, but I deleted those to make sure that I wasn't looking at one of them during the restore. It still won't do it.
Is the backup corrupt, or am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for the help.
I don't think that is it - I searched for all the text in the dialog in the file that you mentioned and couldn't find anything. I get the message form iTunes and other programs too.

Backup asks for password but never set one
All of a sudden, iPhone back up asks for password even though I never set one. When I click on "cancel" on the sign-on screen then it starts back up anyway. How can I avoid the unecessary delay in the back up process?
Hi anna1983,
Welcome to BlackBerry Support Community Forums. The BlackBerry Desktop Manager requires the password you set up on the device in order to connect to it. http://bbry.lv/bjwDRS

HT201269 Itunes Encrypted Backup Asking for Password That Doesn't Exist - Can't Set Up New Iphone
My iphone 4s has a broken wifi transmitter so it has never been backed up to iCloud. I backed it up on Itunes before setting up my new 5s. When I selected Restore from Itunes on the 5s, I got an "enter password" message on iTunes and saw that the backup of the 4s had been encrypted, even though encryption had not been checked. I looked in Keychain for the password but it wasn't there. Now I have no way to transfer the data from my old phone to my new one. I suspect this is a bug with Mavericks as I just upgraded. I had never used backup encryption before. Any ideas?
If you're still having this problem, try going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
Note: this will only work if your current ID was created by changing the details of your old ID. It won't work if your current ID is an entirely new ID. -
My iPhone has crashed during a sync and now I can't restore from backup as it is asking for password to load the backup yet neither the lock code for the phone or my iTunes Password are working... I have no other password to call upon and need the restore to retrieve info onto my phone, I am a real novice to this...... please help, !!!!
If anyone else is looking for a solution to this same problem, I was able to get it working looking through several older discussions.
The solution was to use the password that I had on my iTunes account the very first time I set up the iPhone about a year ago. I changed my iTunes password about 10 months ago; but apparently, the backups continue to use the password that existed when the phone was first set up.
A couple of troubling things with this are that 1) I didn't apply a password when I did the backup this afternoon so I don't understand why it was required when I did the restore a few hours later. and 2) it makes zero sense why iTunes would not be smart enough to use the current accout password when requiring the password to restore from a backup made with no password.
I thought iTunes and Apple were smarter than that. With so many posts stating exactly the same problem, it is clear that this is bug in the software.
Best,

I too have experienced the "blame everything but Apple products/software" indoctrination of the Apple phone support techs!
I have a feeling that iTunes automatically switches encryption on and puts as default a previous iTunes store password but as I don't leave mine the same all the time (and don't feel the need to remember historic passwords that I'm not using to secure anything against) I have no clue what it is.
Good luck trying to get useful advice on here relating to the issue, it will go along the lines of...
1) Its your fault for setting it and forgetting the password,
2) We know everything and theres definately no way iTunes would set backups to encrypt without your knowledge and...
3) Theres no fix for this issue, you might be able to save some of your data, but most will be lost (unless you specifically ask for an iTunes redownload exemption/ token then your purchases could be lost too).

Want to us my time capsule model A1409 as only backup. 2 TB hard drive.
Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not want to use Time capsule as router, only back up for iMac.
Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule to Ethernet port back of my iMac.
And also it is asking for password for the server John Garland's Time Capsule so Time machine can access it..
Have tried all of passwords can think of and none work.
Held the reset button for one second on back of capsule and do not see if anything happened.
What a conundrum.
Appreciate any help to get this working.
Thanks,
John RI have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one), then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

What can I do, iPad disabled/lockout and iTunes keeps asking for password, I cannot restore...iTunes grays out backup and restore but my iPad and iPod shows on Apple etc..???
Try and force iPad into Recovery Mode:
1. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
2. Connect USB cable to computer, leave the other end alone
3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
5. Release the Home button
6. Open iTune
7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad -
ITunes asking for password varification when videos are playing
Is there a setting that can be changed in iTunes? When I am watching movies on my iMac iTunes will pop up a message stating "check for downloads please enter password" I press cancel and get back to my movie 1-2 min later the same pop up appears and re appears untill I enter the password and then it asks again. I have run anti-virus software on my computer (though I don't see why I had to it is brand new I got it 1 week ago) no viruses. I took it to the apple store and they took a look at it and could not find any virus. So what is going on!!? I thought with the new update to OS X 10.8.3 I tunes would ask for password once and never again while it was running. I get asked for a password varification at least 6 times when I am purchasing from the iTunes store or downloading new content or updating my library. ***!!! I don't mind varifying my password when I am purchasing but when I am watching a movie iTunes needs to turn the **** off!

After booting itunes asks for password ..
only on my mini i7 itunes always asks for password, very anoying ..
thankfull for any ideas to solve this.
(all other macs no problem)Sounds like you encrypted your iPhone backup. If you did, a password is required to restore the information to iPhone(the one you entered when you checked the box to encrypt your backup). If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you cannot remember the password and want to start again, you will have to do a full software restore and when prompted by iTunes to select the backup to restore from, choose Set up as a new device.

Trying to update iphone 4s to ios 8. Install failed for "unknown reasons". Trying to restore I phone from I tunes, asked for password to complete restore. I enter ITunes password and then iphone lock password and neither is accepted. What password is required?
I think the password it asked is the one that you used to encrypt iPhone backup.
