Unequal audio levels on AVCHD capture
I'm new to Final Cut Express. I have connected my Panasonic SD5 camcorder and successfully captures the AVCHD files from it in Express. The problem is whereas channel 1 is normal audio levels, ie hovering around -12db, channel 2 is clipping at 0db and above. I know the camcorder is ok because the levels are fine in Pinnacle. The SD5 is set to auto. I notice that the SD5 boasts "5:1 Surround sound" and the Express is mixing the sound to stereo, could the codec be a problem?
Has anyone got any further with this? My experience with a Panasonic SD9, which records 5.1, and FCE4.0.1, which doesn't support 5.1, is the same: left channel level is about 6dB below right channel, and very noisy with it.
I was of the understanding that, like iMovie 08, FCE would "downgrade" 5.1 to ordinary stereo. While iMovie does a perfectly good job of the conversion, FCE shanks it right royally.
Am I doing something wrong or are Apple still BSing about AVCHD support (which - silly me - I thought would imply audio as well as video)?
Andrew.

Audio Level Gone After Capture
Hello,
I've searched the forums and found one with this problem, and it wasn't resolved.
Basically, I'm previewing audio before and during capture and the levels are great. Then, upon playing back, I open the audio up in the viewer, and even there the levels look great, but it plays back really low - and distroted.
It appears the tape (coming in from my miniDV camcorder) is fine as the level is fine on preview. And it's not my speakers or anything like that, otherwise I'd have the problem during preview, also.
Any thoughts or help would be fantastic.
Thanks,

i would like to get rid of my huge yamaha audio mixing console and to work "only" within the computer.
is there any way to enhance the audio level while capturing software-wise? very often i have dvd or S-VHS material that is around minus 20 dB ! ! ! with the maximum amount of 12 db within the mixer i cant really do that much.
of course there is always the possibility to export to soundtrack pro or nuendo and to do all the audio levels there.... but for every day work this is just to to much work. i like to have my material digitized with proper levels.
thanks for your input!Have you tried "send to soundtrack pro" w video? It's pretty cool. the soundtrack pro plugins work great for run of the mill stuff great little compressor and a great little limiter, plus you get to see your video with no doubt of sync relation ships. Other than that get a couple mic/line preamps and a clean compressor check out

Audio levels too low on capture
I recorded someone wearing a lapel mic. Audio is fne when I listen to camera. But when it captures I can barely hear it and the levels are very low. HELP!
If you captured digitally, the audio level in FCP is the same level as it is on tape. Perhaps your camcorder headphone volume is set higher than normal making you think it was fine ... or maybe your speaker level when monitoring in FCP is set too low.
See what the audio meters in FCP show to determine the actual level. If the audio really is too low, increase the gain.

Trouble viewing audio levels in Voice Over tool
Hello,
I often record voice over into Final Cut Pro using the Voice Over tool. In the middle section of the Voice Over window there is a 'Level' meter that flashes Green to Yellow and Red, illustrating the level of audio being fed into the Mac. For some reason though, this has stopped working for me.
My set up is this: A Mic in our voice over booth connects to a Soundcraft 4 channel mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is linked to a JVC HD tape desk, which is connected to the Mac via FireWire.
Previously, to capture Voice Over I set the tape deck to 'Line' input, in 'DV' mode and set the Voice Over tool to 'DV Audio' as the source.
I can see sound levels on the mixing desk. I can see sound levels on the tape deck, but I can't see sound levels on the Mac's VO tool. Despite this, it does still capture voice over (I just can't 'see' it).
This problem is annoying because it means Im unsure whether the Mac is actually receiving an audio feed or not unless I do a test recording first.
Any suggestions as to why the Voice Over tool would suddenly stop showing me Levels, would be greatly appreciated! My secondary Mac works fine when the AV settings are set to HDV, despite it receiving standard DV audio input. Whether FCP is set to DV or not doesn't seem to matter in this case.
In trying to resolve the issue I played around with DV/HDV settings within FCP and the Deck; trying different combinations, but with no success.
+To recap (just to clarify in my own head), the situation is this:+
+Both of my Macs, Primary and Secondary, happily record Voice Over, via the Voice Over tool.+
+The Mic in the sound room connects to a Mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is also connected to 2 sets of headphones, one for the Artist and one for the Engineer. 2 audio jacks connect the mixing desk to the JVC tape deck. The JVC tape deck connects to my Mac via FireWire to the port at the rear of the Mac.+
+The issue is that the Primary Mac does not display audio Levels in the Voice Over tool, whilst it does on the Secondary Mac.+
+While Im recording Voice Over on my secondary Mac I can see that there is an Audio input because the Green/Yellow/Red bar flashes up. On my Primary mac this bar is inactive and therefore gives me no clues as to the level of audio being fed into the Mac.+ -
Flash audio level drop outs (Windows 8.1)
Hey,
Using adobe flash, I've been having issues with to audio nearly dropping out to nearly inaudible levels on mutiple websites. Anything that does use the flash player, it seems to be triggered when I plug in another device into the computer for use, or charging although it doesn't seem to be 100% consistant and seems less likely after reinitiating the flash player, but would happen after having the flash player open for a longer period of time then attaching a device. My current work around is to either load up a different browser e.g. Google Chrome, which will use it's own plugin container containing another instance of flash. Or to end task on flash from my task manager, then reload the page. which would restore proper audio levels. This does not appear to be specific to one webpage, or to one brower.

While steams loader was active in the background it would cause the flash audio to drop out. I don't know any reason why it would cause this, but have just disabled steam from starting up at all. Any insight on why these two programs would clash and cause audio issues would be greatly appreciated.

I recently got a copy of FCE and am still getting used to it. I was wondering if you could change the audio levels in certain points. I've been using premiere for a number of years and on that you can click on the level line which inserts a point at which you can either peak and troughs.
My project is basically an interview with the a band and at certain intervals im inserting live footage. i have a track playing in the background during the interview and would like it to suddenly get louder in the places where theres footage of the subject in action. How do i go about this?
Also i have another Project that im working on which involves my recent trip to california. Basically when capturing my clips i would like each tape to be saved into seperate folders and bins. So in the program i can quickly find my clips which would be in seperate bins DAY1-DAY2-DAY3 etc.
How do i go about doing this also?
Any Help would be much appreciated
thanksTurn on the clip overlays in the Timeline (Opt-W). Hold the option key and click on the pink audio level line to add a keyframe. Add another keyframe, grab it and pull it down. Not unlike Premiere.
Make a new bin (Cmd-B) and name it. Right-click on it and select Make Capture Bin. Anything you capture will go into that bin. For the next day's material make another bin and set that as the capture bin. You could also just capture the material and move it into appropriate bins. -
After recording or capturing an audio clip in FCE 3.5, I play it and monitor levels in the floating levels meter. Then when I open that same audio clip in the Viewer to adjust the level, I find it's is always set to zero db, instead of the level at which the clip was recorded/captured.
Question: Does an audio clip's level in the Viewer always default to zero, regardless of the level the clip was recorded/captured at?
Thanks.OK.
And, since I don't have an audio levels meter on my camera, I don't really KNOW what level I'm recording at; so, beyond knowing the dynamic range of my equipment, can I assume that after ingesting into FCE, upon playback, if the floating levels meter is not going red, and the waveform in the Viewer is not clipped at the peaks or valleys, that I have good sound?
Thanks. -
Hi
I'm working on material where the footage has been filmed by different people and (lucky me), the audio levels are not consistent. On a particular one, the sound level on the camera was turned down so low (I presume) that after capturing, it is barely audible. (and no, there is no chance of refilming the footage!)
I have whacked up the level within FCP but this is obviously causing me problems because you can hear that buzzing noise (dont know the correct term!) that you get when you turn the volume up of something.
I have sort of tried to apply the audio filters here and there to see if it makes any difference but because I'm unfamiliar with terms like frequency, band width, gain etc, I don't know exactly what should be adjusted.
Any ideas would be really useful
Cheers
Jenny xIf you are using FCP 5, then you should take advantage of Soundtrack Pro. You can boost audio levels (normalize) and remove ambient noise/hum/etc.
You can get a taste of how to reduce noise in the STP Quicktour:

Overriding Processor audio level controls
Hello,
I'm developing an application to capture a live audio stream (by definition a PushDataSource). I want to provide my own controls for monitoring the audio (e.g. mute button, volume level control). What methods set the volume level? I didn't see any of this in the documentation.
I saw getGainControl, but I want to provide my own ... just setting the gain.
Is there an example of this?
Thanks,
Benbrcain wrote:
Do I have to implement a GainEffect plug-in ... just to change the monitored audio level? No. You can actually implement the controls on the PushDataSource itself.
For instance, I have the following code available on the forum:
That code will capture audio using JavaSound, and deliver it to JMF via a PushBufferStream. Because the capturing is done with JavaSound directly, I can run any kind of JavaSound processing I want on the audio before I hand it to JMF.
I could, for instance, convert it to ULAW before I give it to JMF...
I could, for instance, change the sample rate before I give it to JMF...
I could, in particular, change the volume before I give it to JMF...

All you're handing to JMF is a set of audio samples. You can adjust them or monitor them however you want before you give them to JMF... -
My iPhone automatically changes the audio level to max/zero
Hi all. I have a problem with my iPhone audio level. When I'm listening to music with my head phones on, my iPhone sometimes changes the audio level max or zero all by itself. When I try to decrease/increase the sound, it continues to increase/decrease until sound reaches to the max/zero. Restarting the iPhone stops the audio level change. But this does not solve problem once and for all. It happens time to time, but it is becoming somewhat irritating.
Anyone have a solution for this? I've checked the internet, but couldn't find anyone have this problem. I guess I'm the only one who has this problem. Thanks in advance.
BTW, my iPhone is 6 plus & its iOS version is 8.1.3 (12B446). Although I has been happening since I bought it in DecemberI wanted to update this post. I realised a something new with the issue and found a way that I can temporarily solve it without restarting the iPhone. Right before it happens, an orange blinking light appears on the empty (white) side of the sound level at the music player. I marked that area on the photo below, although I couldn't managed to capture that orange blinking light. If I change the sound level via buttons, sound goes to max or min (depending on my button choice). Unplugging and re-plugging headphones don't affect this. After re-plugging, blinking continues. But if I unplug my headphone, then close the music player from double tapping the home button & restarting the music player, turns it it to normal. Even my sound level stays the same, at the level I configured before this issue starts happening.
A remainder, this issue only happens after I start listening to music with my headphones. Same thing with speaker never happened. I hope this message make you all understand my issue better. I also hope that there is a solution -
Audio distortion during/after capture in Premiere Elements10
Why is the audio distorted (sounds like a cell phone that keeps losing a signal and every other word is garbled) when capturing a video from a DV camcorder in Premiere Elements10? I'm using a IEEE 1394 cable from the camcorder to the computer and DV camcorder is selected in the Premiere Elements setup menu. Any help.........please!
Capturing from a tape-based miniDV does not change the audio or video information in any way, Unkie. So if you're capturing from a miniDV camcorder and getting distortion, that distortion is happening in the camcorder itself.
But if you're getting distortion when you output your video, it could well be because your audio levels are too high.
As I say in my books, whenever you edit your video, you should go to the Window menu and open the Audio Mixer. Watch your audio levels as you play back your timeline. They should peak at Zero. If they're up in the yellow and red or are overloading the mixer, you are going to get distortion in your video output.
But if you're saying you're hearing distortion while capturing your video -- that's a whole other issue. You need to adjust your computer's audio levels or turn down your speakers. As I've said, capturing over FireWire does absolutely nothing to change the audio or video information that's coming in from the camcorder. It's just your computer playing it too loud. -
Manual Audio Level Controls! - Sony Alpha DSLRS (A65)
Dear Sony -I absolutely love your DSLRs. However, to use the camera as an acceptable tool for amateur/indie/professional film, manual audio level controls in video mode are a must-have. Equal Canon competitors all feature this simple leveling option for managing audio.Currently, the automatic gain control is the only option for audio recording capabilities on Sony Alpha DSLRS in video recording. While in theory OK, AGC leads to terrible problems such as unnecessarily high and distracting background noise/hiss. Filmmakers desire crisp, clear audio! For quality results using an external microhpone, manual audio levels are the only way for filmmakers to achieve decent in-camera audio to compete with Canon users. Many amateur and professional videographers are in desperate need of this function! Audio is often MORE important than the image quality of your film, although Sony seems to increasingly neglect its video DSLR users by not implementing this ability and falling short on video options (Auto-focus in Manual Mode, audio levels on HUD etc.).To keep my Sony A65 a viable option for video work - please see if anything can be done! (Should be able to be added with a firmware update to all current and existing Alpha DSLRS) Thanks!!! - Love, a filmmaker who would desperately like to keep their A65 for professional video work! (Also from "Join The Inspiration")
Though a great idea, you also have to understand that the a65 isn't as film oriented camera like other cameras.
DSLR cameras with the audio controls are designed with film making in mind, thus they have that option.
Most DSLRs (at least, back in the days) was simply a camera to take photos. If you wanted to do film, you'd buy a dedicated film recorder for that. Having video capabilities in a DSLR was a bonus.
Nowadays, it's merging, bang for buck, reaching to a boarder audience, one size fits all, etc, and unfortunately, the a65 wasn't part of that 'nowadays' era.
The a99 and a77ii, if I remember correctly, has audio controls.
A lot of the newer Sony models (mirrorless) also have audio controls, that is, the ones that a targeted towards film making and not just great photos with the bonus of great video.
Also, I would presume that a lot of 'professional' videographers will either use external mics such as on a pole, a lapel mic, etc, to capture perfect audio, or if not, at least a shotgun/boom mic attached to the camera.
When doing such, there technically shouldn't be a lot of problems with the audio quality. Of course, if those external mics are still recorded into the camera, then yeah... but if they're recorded separately and slapped on during post processing... shouldn't be any problems...
If you're relying purely on the a65 and it's AGC, then there definitely will be shortcomings here and there unfortunately.
I recently filmed my niece-in-law's wedding. I didn't have any fancy mic setups (can't afford it at this stage), and this wasn't any sort of 'professional' work, more of just something for the family (free), but the audio came out excellent. Yes, it caught ambient noise (obviously), but I don't hear any cutoffs or badly pitched noises, or anything. The loud music and people cheering on and such all came through very clearly. Sure, it's no 'professional' bitrate or anything, but at 192kbps, it did the job.
Anyways, that was off topic, but all I'm saying is, you can't expect much from a photo taking centred camera which has been slapped on with nice video capabilities unfortunately. Also, due to the a65's age, I don't think Sony's bringing out anymore updates. My advice is either get an a77ii for it's awesome AF, or if full frame is a desire, then the a99 or a mirrorless (up to you). The a99 has a controllable focus range which is something I like, that way, if you're using autofocus (yeah... what 'professional' videographer would use autofocus aye?), you won't lose focus on subjects if something goes in front/behind it.Also, the little wheel at the front really helps in allowing you to make adjustments without disrupting video or causing too much movement in the camera. Right now, I am planning on getting a RX10ii. Though I'd love to get something from the mirrorless range, it's just way out of my budget (even the RX10ii is, so there's a lot of saving to do right now also...). Anyways, good luck with your videos. -
Blackmagic audio levels low. Need some help!!!
I just got the blackmagic sp. Everything is working great except for the audio input to the computer. I have set the reference level for tone to 0 on my beta sp deck. I'm clipping with the gain all the way down on my monitor sound board. The main problem is that i cannot get my audio level above -15 in FCP. Any Suggestions?
Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4) 4 GB DDR SDRAMTry this:
Beta deck 0dB on the meter
Set the mixer at unity (what sort of mixer is it?) Put the master output fader at whatever the mixer thinks is zero on the slider. Raise the L&R input sliders until you get 0dB on the mixer's meters. Open log and capture and play bars and tone from the deck. Look at the meters in fcp. Adjust the mixer master fader until the level raises to -12 dB.
Does this not work?
If it doesn't you might want to check how you are coming out of the mixer-- are you sure you're using the proper outputs? -
We just sent a Commercial out to the Cable Company.
In FCP our timeline/project audio levels were carefully watched so they did not peak at more than -12db.
When we did a Print to Video so we could Master it to DV Tape for delivery (per their standards), we set the Bars & Tone at :30 seconds & -12db.
When we re-captured the video to test it out... the Bars & Tone played at -24db and the program played at -12db. Naturally, this concerned us because we were scared that our program's Audio Levels would not be up to par.
-Normally (in Avid) I would have Bars & Tone on my timeline set to :30secs & -12db... then capture from my timeline with all levels peaking at -12db.
What should our levels be set at during a Print to Video operation in FCP if our timeline/project is set at -12db?I suspect I would not even peak at -3 dBFS. If I am using 24 bit, you have a long way to the noise floor, which means after the fact it is easy to raise the levels if required without adverse consequences.
If I am in the Analog domain, with a decent mixer with headroom, coming near 0dB I believe is harmless, as 0dB will translate out to -18 ot 20 dBFS ( I am sure this varies from mixer to mixer ) - harmless if your mixer does not clip and has headroom above 0dB. I use a Mackie 1640, which has +18 dB of headroom.
