Uneven sound...which filter fixes?

My sound levels in a rather long sequence are uneven.
Which filter do I use to address the problem?
And do I choose all the clips in the sequence and then apply the filter at the same time so that it equals them all out?
Thanks in advance...
PS: what happened to the search feature in the discussion forums?

there is no direct filter to normalise sound in FCP 5 .. you are the filter! its the editors job
that said, if you are using FCP 6 there is now a Soft Normalize filter (i don't have FCP 6 yet so can only report its existence, not how to use it)
in FCP 5 you can send the audio to Soundtrack Pro and apply a normalise filter there.

  • Audio noise, which filter and how to...

    Greetings.
    I've got a project that I'm pretty happy with and now I'm ready to tweek the sound. The audio was a recording of an interview using the internal mike on a Canon Optura 50.
    I know, not exactly high end, but that is what I had. The wireless lav flaked out.
    Needless to say the audio could use some sort of clean up. There seems to be a constant and consistant sound throughout the interview in the audio. It is either the sound of the camera itself, the room we were in, or a combination of both.
    FCE has LOTS of audio filters, and reading the manual confused more than helped. Can anyone describe a way to filter, and which filter, starting adjustments, etc. I should be approaching?
    The good thing about my project is that once I get one clip adjusted, I think I can copy and paste the attributes to the other similar clips.
    Thanks.
    Jonathan

    Hi Jonathan,
    You can try the hum filter in FCE, it may help, but it's really designed to reduce 50/60Hz A/C hum. Graphic EQ really won't help - the noise crosses a wide swath of frequencies and has enough randomness in it that you need something that has a 'learn noise' capability to really attack the problem.
    Audacity is a sound editor. I'd suggest exporting your audio track as an AIFF file, import that into Audacity and see if the noise filter will work on it (you DO sample the noise in Audacity just like in Sound Soap). If it works, you can save the result and import it back into FCE.

  • Windows 7 Sound Stutter Solution - Fixed my sound issues.

    9Windows 7 Sound Stutter Solution - Fixed my sound issues.= I have had some?stuttering when I installed windows 7 32-bit and the latest SB drivers for my X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card.
    In XP I never experienced this issue before.
    My music?stuttered ?when browsing the web with Explorer 8.
    I made one simple adjustment to my PC in the BIOS.
    I changed the hard disk ?DMA mode from Auto to Ultra DMA 5 and saved the settings.
    Make sure you are not running your hard dri've in?PIO mode. I left my PIO mode to?Auto.
    I have tried to re create the stuttering while browsing by opening several windows in explorer 8, all the stuttering is gone.
    Ultra DMA 5 apperantly enables?the hard disk to operate at? higher data transfer rates which?increases the?performance of your hard dri've.
    My PC is not high end.
    Running Pentium 4 3.2 GHz processor on a Asus Motherboard P4C800-E?Deluxe.
    This solution may fix the sound issues some of you are experiencing.

    = try this web page and see if you have a problem. It crashes my audio before any of the videos finish.
    http://www.vimeo.com/channels/vjhd#77438
    media center music with visualization will crash it too.
    It doesn't suprize me its a bios setting. I think the whole thing has to do with latency and board timing.
    Overall I'm pissed. creative could just come out and say,"Look, the older products are not compatable with windows 7. Go out and buy a new creative windows 7 compatable card" But they haven't. They have said that x-fi is totally compatable with windows 7 and its not. win 7 is out. The RTM has been out for months. They have had time to make drivers. They just haven't done it. I use a lot of audio applications day to day. I'm tired and pissed off about having audio crashs.
    seriously, just release a quick fix with basic sound and worry about all the eax **bleep** later.

    That's may problem:
    I have one work 100% black (book), end fill texts may include CYM, how to identify them using a filter (Shift+ctrl+x)

    I'd use the settings you'll use to convert the data (or Absolute). If you do any conversions in Photoshop, make sure Dither is off.

    This bug figures out also when creating a custom spark ComboBox, then trying to programatically update the userProposedSelectedIndex property. The proposed selected index is selected, but does not apply the same skin as when mouse is on rollover or item is selected due to up and down keys.
    The issue seems like updating the status of the item renderer to rollover or selected to get the same skin applied.

  • Which filter to fix moire effect?

    I usually use Gaussian blur to fix a moire effect on clothing, but that's not doing the trick this time.
    Footage is a 30-minute one-person interview, filmed waist-up (seated).  The woman's face looks fine, but she's wearing a jacket with brown & black checkered pattern and it's causing major moire effect.
    Which FCP 7 filter will help with this?  I'd like to apply it just to the jacket, not her face.

    >she's wearing a jacket with brown & black checkered pattern and it's causing major moire effect.
    It will.
    Certain patterns like narrow pinstripes and fine checks are poisonous in video and television. It is your camera operator's responsibility to know this and point it out to the talent and wardrobe people.
    Safest bet is to have them wear plain colors.

  • Not sure which filter I need for audio fix...

    Ok so I am filming this guy at a podium and my wireless mic is taped to the stand. Problem is that he starts talking, but walks away from the podium a couple times so I can barely hear him. Is there a filter to grab just the low audio and bring it up?
    Thanks!

    No, you're filming him standing ON a podium. He's standing AT a lectern. The difference is as crucial as going to pederast for foot problems.
    Yes and no. You must boost the level of the track to compensate for the diminished signal to noise ratio caused by the increase in source to mic distance. This will bring up the floor of the track along with the voice. Now you have to filter out the floor without diminishing the voice. It's easier in Soundtrack Pro where you can display the audio as a spectrum instead of merely volume waveforms. You must target the noise and exclude the signal.

  • When using firefox, my computers freezes up from time to time, every program freezes and then my computer just restarts, the strange thing then is that it can't find my harddrive, which i fix by pressing the power supply button.

    This problem only happens on my Desktop, my Laptop doesn't have any problems with it, both use the same app-tabs and plugins, maybe 1 or 2 that are different.
    It happens just randomly when browsing, or when playing a game, or even when idle left at night, i come back and i see that it crashed.
    App-tabs: Twitter, Hyves, Facebook, GooglePlus, Gmail, Google Documents, Google Calendar.
    Desktop Specifications: [http://i44.tinypic.com/e0j42u.jpg http://i44.tinypic.com/e0j42u.jpg] http://i44.tinypic.com/e0j42u.jpg

    Both have all Microsoft updates installed.
    It even happened when i was typing this, luckily Firefox has a restore function so i don't have to retype this again!.. It's really annoying, re-installing my desktop didn't help either, I'm generally quite good with computers, but this problem isn't fixable by me, or at least not with what i know.

    To answer the post title FireFox save all downloads automatically in the download folder, which you can find in the Documents folder. If you want to choose where to save your downloads go to tools>options>check always ask me where to save files.
    Secondly, I am assuming you have IE 8 installed as this is the only version that supports this fix that is currently not in beta. Go to control panel>internet options>advanced tab and reset the settings at the bottom. This may or may not fix the problem but it is a good first step.

  • Which filter to use?

    HI - I have a continous wave laser system which directs its laser output into a photomultiplier tube (used to measure the number of photons in the laser light and provide a voltage signal).
    This voltage signal is wired into DAQ  system and a simple program has been created to acquire the voltage signals from the photomultiplier tube. However we have now added a light chopper ahead of the laser beam before entering the PM tube to provide a pulsed signal. The chopper is currently set to 500hz chopping frequency and hence we now get a sinuosidal wave  in our DAQ program.
    is there any way to eliminate the sinusodal wavelength from the program through some sort of a filter which would retain the change in laser intensity as if the chopper wheel was not there? We need to keep the chopper wheel in place so i cannot just remove it.
    many thanks for your help.
    Notay

    It might be better to capture the peak values (or average of several samples near the peak if the signal is noisy) rather than trying to use a filter.
    Is your chopper a typical "bow tie" mirror or a crossed polarizer which changes amplitude continuously?  The reason I ask is that the typical chopper would produce a square wave signal, not a sinusoidal one.  With square waves it is much easier to track the amplitude variations of the laser.

  • Exporting sound for dvd studio 4. Studio 4 is only accepting ac3, saying bit rate too high in ALL other formats. However, aa3 auto levels the sound, which is not wanted, and it also drops the volume by about 40%, also not wanted. How do I get around this.

    I have successfully used various formats and bit rates of sound in DVD Pro 4 with no problems, AIFF, WAVE, (obviously preferable as they give a good quality of sound as intended). However, of late, DVD Pro 4 refuses AIFF, WAVE, and anything higher than the lowest ac3 bit rate/format. This is rendering an aweful sound, auto volume leveled - which gives a very unprofessional fluctuation in volume and making a ionsense of careful sound editing. It also renders the volume at about 30% - 40% lower than the original master requiring huge increase in amplifier volume settings to get a decent volume.I have tried every format and bit rate, but FCP and DVD Pro 4 will only accept the lowest ac3 setting.
    I have customers awaiting video of their concerts, can not deliver with this sound issue.
    very much appreciate some assistance here.

  • Can very uneven audio levels be fixed?

                                                      How do I fix very uneven audio with Premiere Pro - Can it be done?
    Source/Root Cause: Person I'm filming is speaking into a handheld mike while walking around so they of course can't hold it perfectly steady, level and still in order to produce speech that is consistently even and uniform. Also, in addition, their voice fluctuates to a significant degree & alternates between soft and loud.
    Results in: Audio with a substantial dynamic range.
    Correction Requires: (because I don't know any better) a number of hours manually dicing up the audio track and boosting the segments that are soft to the extent necessary or trying to salvage the clipped parts.
    That intensive process and concentrated effort is: wearing, time consuming, tedious and tests my patience.
    I figure there must be a better solution! Experimented with the audio tools but has been shut out thus far & haven't solved the problem.
    What should I be doing so I can automatically lower the highs and boost the lows?
    All advice & suggestions welcome.
    Thank you.

    Have you checked out the "dynamics" effect/compressor control?

    When you try to list some audio related names (such as mix name, port name, control name) by using java sound api, and if the names are writtened by non-ascii character such as Chinese, you will get the strange characters, that means java sound api does not support internationalization character. Here is the sample:

    Compile and run the code below on non-ascii Windows OS, you will catch the problem.
    The solution I provide:
    Download the jdk 1.4.2 source, search the files named PortMixer.c && PortMixerProvider.c and replace the method "NewStringUTF" with the method below:
    jstring WindowsTojstring2( JNIEnv* env, char* str )
    jstring rtn = 0;
    int slen = strlen(str);
    unsigned short* buffer = 0;
    if( slen == 0 )
    rtn = (*env)->NewStringUTF(env,str );
    else
    int length = MultiByteToWideChar( CP_ACP, 0, (LPCSTR)str, slen, NULL, 0 );
    buffer = malloc( length*2 + 1 );
    if( MultiByteToWideChar( CP_ACP, 0, (LPCSTR)str, slen, (LPWSTR)buffer, length ) >0 )
    rtn = (*env)->NewString( env, (jchar*)buffer, length );
    if( buffer )
    free( buffer );
    return rtn;
    Rebuild jdk source code as per sun build document. Got the result files and pick up jsound.dll, replace the original jsound.dll in your JRE with the fixed file.
    Then the problem solved. I also hope sun will fix the problem in the future version of JDK.
    Or any one can help me to submit this article to the sun JDK team.

    Well Monty thanks for your input I have no other third party app besides "Little Snitch" running, I have a PB G4 and a brand New iMac - same issue on both machines.

    Well, these are just the ones that I found doing a quick look through the posts.
    Apple is also aware of the problem for some time. I recall longer threads about this. People started the rather "Windoish" fix of writing an Apple script for it.
    So anyway, let's leave ignorance aside, pretend that there are more users having the problem and get to work:
