Uneven volume

Uneven volume for different songs, not affected by either "Sound check" or the Volume settings on "File>Get info"
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The trouble is that the algorithm iTunes uses to determine the overall volume of its songs is not very accurate.
There are 3rd party programs that do this more effectively than the soundcheck function (at least in my opinion).
For Macs there is iVolume.
Also Macmp3Gain.

  • Audio Suggestions for Filming School Plays

I'm trying to obtain a better quality soundtrack for my wife's school plays (she's the music teacher). They don't have much of a sound system although I can combine the music from a digital source and the audio from the microphones (for speaking parts) into one stereo mini-jack. What is missing is the general audio; that is she has 100 kids on stage at once singing and there are no omni directional mic's that can pick that up. I have a Sony SR12 set up at the back of the auditorium and the audio is atrocious from that distance (and with that equipment).
Any recommendations? I'm looking for mic setup suggestions and recording source equipment that I can later take into Final Cut and sync with the video.
Keep in mind as best you can that while I do love my gadgets, I don't have $2000 bucks to spend on equipment, but I want to get this as close to professional as I can.
    Thanks in Advance.

I video school plays as well: three cams (two HDV for following actors/action, one DV to cover the whole stage); My best audio has come from using a Rode NT4 dual capsule X/Y mic in the center, and a matched pair of Rode NT5's with omni capsules hard left and right.
The NT4 center gets good stereo and minimized the sound stage shift (left and right) as a centered actor turns his head left and right. Wide set stereo mics can have the sound stage flying all over the place as actors move their heads, but don't actually travel anywhere on the stage. The Rode needs phantom power OR a battery and plugs right into an XLR input on my HDV or DV cams. This mic pair I consider the stereo master audio track, so I use the DV camera (uncompressed PCM).
The two omni mics set left and right are used for overall ambiance if I need to add it (lightly), enhanced stereo, and uneven volume when actors speak from hard stage left/right, or even in the wings. I use the NT5 pair because they are a good match for the NT4 capsules from an audio perspecive, and they are small. They need phantom power and plug into XLR camera input.
The third camera only records audio for sync purposes, and I use the on camera mic.
Newer alternative that I've only tried on a short piece, but it worked well:
A Zoom H4n digital recorder. It has decent (not as good as the Rode's) on board mics that are in an X/Y pattern at 90 or 120 degrees (more centered / more stereo). It also has two XLR or 1/4" input jacks that can supply phantom power to external microphones. It will record all 4 tracks at once in 16 bit 48kHz uncompresed (WAV), or various compressed formats. It takes SD/HC cards, and a 8MB card (about $20 or less from Amazon) will hold hours of audio. It runs on batteries (risky or a wall wart that is included. It can mount to a camera tripod mount, and a mic stand adapter is included.
It's cheap enough, and for many uses, the onboard X/Y mics would be fine. Our theater stage is quite large, so the outboard external mics are needed to even things out.
Note also that I avoid whatever sound-reinforcement mics/speakers the theater wants to use. Too many ground loop issues, and reinforcement is different than audio for video. Keep your mics away from the speakers
The Zoom is about $350 from Sweetwater.
Then you can use your on camera mic for backup (something goes whoops, you still have sound, and you have flexibility in mic placement; the Zoom goes center, but maybe a bit back from the stage to pick up a more even sound stage; the omni l/r mics at about the same distance. Since the four tracks are two stereo pairs, you can play with delays if you get chorusing or echoing due to sound delays. But they are close enough to the audio source (the singers), that ambient echos are reduced and can be dealt with using compression, gates, etc. in FCP.
If you want to get more serious about audio for video, there's alway Logic or ProTools depending on your needs. I have ProTools for my studio (audio only), but have only used the LT version once for a problematic HVAC noise background I need to deal with. Probably could have done it in Sound Track Pro, but I'm just more familiar with PT.
    Good Luck.

  • Sound and jpeg

Using iMovie '09 (8.0.6), I had combined jpegs with an MP3. I added the jpegs to the sound files so that I could place them on YouTube. The process went well enough, but the sound was inconsistent in quality -- uneven volume, sometimes echos -- so someone in Tech Support said that I would get better results from the new iMovie. I have downloaded iMovie 10, but I can't reproduce the results.
    This is my goal:
    1. Attach one MP3 sound file to a set of 21 jpegs that change through the duration of the movie.
    2. Keep the images from shifting around as they change.
    3. Use the screen aspect ration of an iPhone, 4:3.
    4. Do this 4 times.
Here is the article that was my starting place. https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1696878?hl=en
What I did was to drag a jeep to the staging area, and then I dragged an MP3 into the project area.
Next I used the gear icon to specify the clip length, and I clicked the "Every clip equal" option, so that all of the jpegs would appear for the same amount of time.
I used a set of 21 jpegs. They progress in saturation from 0% to 100%, in 20 steps, so that the image appears to steadily gain color through the length of the movie.
Now, in iMovie 10, I am having trouble specifying the clip length.
I also find that the pixel size of the movie has changed, so it no longer matches the dimensions of the jpeg.
Here is a link to the older movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaNfHekRIKs&list=UUuhnyLkerlWFdLYaf4b34VA

Would QT Pro be the correct program?
It certainly is one application that can do this. The basic work flow would be as follows:
    1) Open an MPEG-4 audio file.
    2) Use the "Open File..." File menu option to open the associated JPEG file in a second "player" window.
    3) Press Command-A and Command-C to copy the JPEG player content to memory and then close the player.
    4) If not already active, re-select the MPEG-4 audio player and press Command-A to select all audio content.
    5) Use the "Add to Selection & Scale" edit menu option to paste the JPEG image across the entire selected duration of audio.
    6) You can save the audio video segment at this time if you wish.
    7) Repeat steps 1 thru 6 as needed to create additional player segments.
    8) Create a new player.
    9) Open or select a previously create audio/video segment and paste it to the "new" player.
    10) Repeat step 9 to order the segments to the new player as desired.
    11) Use the "Save As..." File menu option to name and store the final movie.
While somewhat repetitive, the process of creating your movie is very easy to perform.
I have IMOVIE 6 HD but I can't seem to add the MPEG4 track as an audio track.
iMovie could be used but GarageBand might be easier to work with here. The basic work flow would be as follows:
    1) Create a new GarageBand "Podcast" project.
    2) Drag 'n Drop each of your audio tracks to the project window in their proper order. (They can be added as separate tracks if you want to "overlap" the audio or merged together as a single track with or without a break between audio segments.)
    3) Add the individual JPEG files to the "podcast" track in their proper order and slide, stretch and/or shrink the duration of each JPEG display to match its associated audio segment.
    4) Export the finished project to your desired compression format based on how you plan to use/distribute the content.

  • Odd sound quality with streaming music

I had more than 1 Quick Time clip streaming earlier today and they sounded very odd. I didn't notice until listening to a stream online and then checking songs on iTunes and found similar problems with both. There seems to be uneven volume between elements of a stream and all vocals tend to sound as if they're drenched in reverb or emanating from a cave. I re-started the iMac, but the problem still exists. Anyone else have this problem?
    thanks!

The sound coming from my speakers now just sounds garbled and low in volume, whereas a piano sound from my Reason software sounds fine. Is there any fix to this issue? Thanks.

  • Right Speaker louder than Le

    Relevant Specs:
    K8N Diamond Plus
    nForce SLI
Onboard Audigy SE (CD drivers, technically a Sound Blaster Li've?)
    Klipsch Promedia 2.
Logitech MX3000 Keyboard and Mouse with SetPoint installed
    Tested on Winamp 5.2
Here's the deal: I always keep my Wave and Master volume at full via Windows, and control my volume using my speaker's volume knob. I noticed that whenever I turned my speaker volume to very low levels I only got sound from my right speaker.
To conclusi'vely test this I fired up Winamp, set the volume to 00% LEFT, and turned down the speaker volume until I could no longer hear any music.
Then when I moved the slider to 00% RIGHT (at the same volume).... I got sound from the right speaker (so unfortunately what I was testing for turned out to be true).
Is there a reason why one of my speakers is louder than the other? The ProMedia's controller is integrated into the right speaker casing, is it possible it'll always be a little bit louder since its connected directly to the sub?
Or is it some sort of driver issue? I'm almost positi've that when I reinstalled my drivers w/ EAX I managed to get equal sound, but horrible echoing, so EAX had to go. When I installed again, the uneven volume returned. Because of this, I'm leaning towards it being driver related.
Any help would be appreciated, or even better, if anyone w/ ProMedias could do the same test for me and let me know their results.

Wasn't trying to imply this was a Creative problem. Truth be told, this is something I noticed long after I got my X-fi card. Cause of the problem could have gone either way. Least now I know who to blame. Still great speakers though.
As for the settings in the THX Setup Console; I haven't had an issue with the settings being lost. Thankfully so far so good. Knock on wood.

  • Uneven earbud volume on my iPod

Even when I have my earbuds in my iPod, the left side plays louder than the right side. It's not just this particular pair of earbuds, as I've tested it with other earbuds, headphones, and even stereos. Can I take this to an Apple store and get a new one/get it fixed? (I have a warranty for my iPod)

  • Uneven Seam

The iPhone 3G that I bought Saturday night has a slightly uneven seam along the side with the volume keys. In other words, while running my fingers along the other side feels quite smooth, the side with the volume keys has a noticeable ridge -- the screen half overhangs the back half slightly.
This is not an enormous problem, but it has come to annoy me already in less than 48 hours with the device.
    1. Has anyone else experienced this?
    2. Is this a defect?
    3. If this is a defect, is the Apple Store likely to help me with an on-the-spot swap, or will I have to send it in?
    Thanks for your thoughts.
PS - I can't find the search function in the Apple Discussions. Disabled at the moment?

Theres a lot of QC issues that i've come across with the iphone 3g. From faulty hardware like the home button to QC of the black finish on my phone. I'll be taking it into the store for another go at a warranty solution. I've had my first iphone 3g replaced for the faulty home button, and the replacement i got had reverse dents on the black finish on the back of the phone.
Just remember for all your QC or Software issues, the warranty is covering it.
Apple’s warranty obligations for this hardware product are limited to the terms set

the hardware defect at no charge, using new parts or parts equivalent to new in

  • Delete File From Mounted Volume

    Hey,
I am trying to delete the "Calendar Cache" files on both my laptop PowerBook G4 and the Mac Pro Quad that I sync my calendars with. I am using ChronoSync and the individual calendars sync fine, but there is a little house keeping needed with the cache file. They need to be deleted on both systems in order to "refresh" the views of the calendars.
So after the sync of calendars, I have the software initiating an AppleScript that deletes both. Here's the script:
+(* PowerBook Files / delete cache file *)+
+(* Please note that both systems have the same username. This may be arise a conflict *)+
    +tell application "Finder"+
    + activate+
+ tell application "Finder" to delete file "Calendar Cache" of folder "Calendars" of folder "Library" of disk "useranthony"+
    +end tell+
+(* Mac Pro Quad/ delete cache file *)+
    +tell application "Finder"+
    + mount volume "afp://10.10.10.1/anthonyabraira"+
+ tell application "Finder" to delete file "Calendar Cache" of folder "Calendars" of folder "Library" of disk "/volumes/useranthony"+
    +end tell+
I am having trouble addressing a deletion on the networked Mac Pro Quad.

why send it to the trash — just delete it...
(* PowerBook Files / delete cache file )
    try
do shell script "rm -rf /Library/Calendars/Calendar\\ Cache"
    end try
you may need a delay for the Mac Pro Quad to mount
( Mac Pro Quad/ delete cache file *)
--the mount and then the delay
    delay 4
    try
do shell script "rm -rf /THE-CORRECT/PATH-HERE/Library/Calendars/Calendar\\ Cache"
    end try

  • Voice memo volume

I just got an iPhone 5S (had a 4S).  I use Voice Memos alot and am having trouble hearing my voice on the 5S, it doesn't playback very loudly.  There's nothing I wrong with my hearing, I have the volume turned up all the way using the volune Up button on the side, but I still can't hear it very well in the quiet of my house.  I probably won't be able to hear it if I'm out on the street or in the car or something.  Is there something else I can set to increase the volume level?
    TIA,
    Audrey

    Hello NCMead,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I'd like you to take a look a the follow support article, specifically starting at step 5:
Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
    Try turning off Bluetooth.
If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Restart the iPhone.
If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
If the issue is not resolved, please contact Apple Support.
iPhone: No sound or distorted sound from speaker

  • Disconnection from mounted volume

Hi there, I am accessing files on a colleague's G4 running OS 9.2.2 which acts as a file server (small office, no server as yet). I have a G4 running OS X 10.4.10. I go to My Network, select her computer, click on Connect, select her hard disk as the volume and click OK. I am then connected to her HDD. I then access files etc but then many times a day I appear to be disconnected (error message stating that the connection has been interrupted). File sharing is on and appletalk is on.
It never used to happen with my old G4 running OS 9.2.2. With my old G4, I wiped the HDD and put in a partition, with OS 9.2.2 on one volume and OS X Tiger on the other volume. Whichever OS I ran, the same thing seemed to happen (disconnection). I have since acquired a newer Mac, but seem to be having the same problem. What might be causing it do you think? I am tempted to put all the files onto my newer machine and see what happens. And replace the network cables!

Thanks Joe. And I thought by updating all the G4s in our office from 9.1 to 9.2.1 to 9.2.2 was improving things! lol...oh well. I will soon be installing a server and doing things properly, which will run Tiger, so hopefully like you say the problem will disappear! All the best, Pat

  • File from AFP volume vanished!

I had a user yesterday attempt to modify the name of an InDesign CS3 file she had been working on a shared volume and it just disappeared on her. She stated that there was a error "30 or something" and then the file just disappeared. I did a search myself on the (G5 Xserve - 10.4.9) server and I could not locate the file anywhere.
This server has not caused us any problems in the past, has 75% free space on the boot drive and 50% free space on the Xserve RAID the file in question resided on.
Any ideas as to what may have happened to this file and how I might prevent this from happening in the future?

Although I have not seen this behavior with CS3 products, such errors are much more common with CS2 products. Since you didn't actually see what happened, I'd go with the following generic suggestions:
    1. Update your server to Mac OS X Server 10.4.11. (I noticed you're still at 10.4.9.)
    2. Make sure that InDesign CS3 is up-to-date (5.0.1).
    3. Was the user attempting to rename the file using Finder or Adobe Bridge or the Version Cue save panel? (Hint: Just use Finder!)
    4. If the user is, in fact, using a CS2 product, the best thing to do would be to copy the file to the local computer, modify it, then copy it back to the server.

  • Can multiple Macs access the same firewire volume simultaneously?

I have a firewire drive and hub, and two Mac Minis. I would like to use this hardware to build an Oracle 10g Real Application Cluster (RAC). To do this, both Macs would have to be able to read/write blocks on the same volume on the firewire drive (Oracle prevents collisions). Newer Linux kernels have support for doing this. It seems that the Mac OS X Server 10.3.4 that I am using blocks at the volume level by node. It would seem to preclude my using this hardware unless I devote another machine to being an NFS server for the shared storage. I'm looking for possible kernel tricks to get this to work.
    Jeremiah
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.3.4)

According to Oracle's white paper on RAC:
The type of disk storage used can be network attached storage (NAS), storage area network (SAN), or SCSI disk.
It does go on to say:
Alternatively Oracle supports the use of raw devices and some cluster file systems such as Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS) which is available on Windows, Linux and Solaris
I suppose if Oracle is taking over the raw device, support might be possible, but OCFS is not available for Mac OS X.

  • How can I make all my files the same volume???

I am a DJ and I want to make all of my files the same volume without losing too much sound quality. I dont just want them to play back the same volume on iTunes. I want them to all be the same volume when I burn them to a cd. As there a way to do this? Any help would be appreciated!

I want them to all be the same volume when I burn them to a cd.
If you mean Audio CD, check 'Use Sound Check' in Preferences>Advanced>Burning.
This will - kind of - 'normalize' the tracks and is supposed to bring them at the same volume.
I haven't tried this for a long time though (since iTunes 5, I think), because I was not satisfied with the results.
It could have improved now, so you could give it a try.
I use Jam (Roxio.com) to create my Audio CDs. It has a 'normalize' function that works well and you can also set the gain for each track manually.
You could also try the 'normalize' function of an audio editor like Audacity (freeware) or Sound Studio to alter the files permanently.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I adjust just the ringer volume on an iPhone 4s

I have the ringer turned way up because I'm in a noisy work environment, but that also increases the volume for the key click, game sounds, etc.  is there a way to only affect the ringer volume?

An alternate method is Accessibility Settings when connected to iTunes. You should be able to turn it off there. I would also check out some of the answers listed to the right of this post and see if they can help.
