Uneven white splotches on menus

I am using idvd 5.01 on a G4 running 10.3.9 fully loaded with 1.5 GB. I am creating a number of slide shows with and using text menus and sub-menus.
I have placed a simple graphic with a logo and white background over the the
idvd supplied theme background. When I go to preview the dvd I see these white splotches which are uneven and cover the text button. I thought this was simply a function of the preview, but when I burned the DVD it also appeared over every menu!

If you see them in Preview you really have a problem - Preview in iDVD only uses your source material. It sounds like a transparency issue.

Animated .gif in Captivate 7 - white splotches?

Hello,
I have an animated .gif that works perfectly when openened in an IE web broswer. When I import it as an animation into Captivate 7, the animation has tiny "blinking" white splotches moving over it, kind of like its electrified.
Does anyone have experience with this?

Open your animated gif in Photoshop or some other graphics editor that can create these type of files and check the delay value. It must be greater than zero otherwise you will encounter problems in Cp output.

Uneven White Edging Phenomenon When Exporting

The past few sessions I've exported have caused my photos to display an uneven white boarder; this border begins in the top right of the photo and tapers to nothing at the top left. This phenomenon is repeated bottom left to top, right top to bottom, and bottom right to left.
I haven't been able to find any reason that this is happening or how I might fix it. Black and White photos do not exhibit this issue.
UPDATE:
Upon further inspection it seems that the white lines that taper off on all four sides are a result of custom color presets. Is there any option in lightroom that I could have messed with that would create this effect? It never happened in LR4 with the same presets.

Were these EPS files imported with the import option to "Render preview from postscript"? One way to possibly test for this would be to apply a drop shadow and see if it follows the content outline or just makes a big square drop shadow.
I am just curious if that has anything to do with it, not saying it actually does. It rather sounds like the old EPS preview bugaboo though, but it is disturbing that it is a randomized occurrence in CS3!
You could also try exporting the files as .inx and reimporting to see if that has any useful effect--preferably after setting your import options for EPS as mentioned above.
EDIT: There are also clipping options in that dialog which you could play with if this is simply a bitmap with a clipping path rather than vector art (I'm not completely clear on that from the description).
EDIT2: And Leopard really isn't a great idea in a production environment right now!

New Retina MacBook Pro has crushed pixels (faint white splotches/patches on screen), anyone else?

Does anybody else have these ugly white splotches on their screens? I was so dissapointed to see this on my new retina display. They're usually hard to see, but easy to see on a white/gray background. I will most likely have to get a complete replacement, and this could take weeks. Does anyone else who ordered a new MacBook Pro have this issue?

Any display with ANY dead pixels is hard to sell.
Have a look on ebay, you will find many ads for used computers and displays that say "No Dead Pixels".
So you ever think that you will sell this computer in the future you don't want dead pixels.

Printer giving uneven white border ...

Hi Guys
Technically not an Indesign question (although the PDF I am using originated from Indesign), but I am out of ideas!
Our in house printing services doesn't have the capability to trim down on large quantity jobs, so I am having to design the A5 flyer we require with a white border. I am designing 4 to an A3 sheet.
I have allowed a 5mm white border around the edge and a 10mm border in the middle so when trimmed into 4, in theory, each should have a nice 5mm white border all the way around.
The pdf looks great in terms of the borders being spot on.
When printed however, we get an uneven white border (the right hand long border is a good few mil narrower than the left and the top one narrower than the bottom).
We have tried on several printers and the same results.
The document is double sided and its just occured to me as typing that I havent tried to print just one side.
Trying that now but any other suggestions? Its obviously the printer issue if the PDF is fine right?

It's a difference with technology. Printing presses have grippers, and registration tables to assure the sheet is properly positioned before it is fed into the rollers. Most digital printers simply have some sort of pick-up roller and a paper sensor that stops the machine if there is an odd length detected, and this is VERY imprecise, especially if the paper guides are not snug or, as is often the case, sheets trimmed to digital sizes are slightly short or slightly long which can happen with changes in humidity as well as just poor cutting . You can check with the manufacturer, but it's a near certainlty that they will tell you that +/- 1mm is well within spec for position on the page.
I'm afraid this is just a fact of life. And it wouldn't matter if you were trimming, either. Sheet-to-sheet variation of up to 3 mm overall is not uncommon on desktop printers, and even on commercial copiers, so putting a stack in a guillotine is not a guarantee that all of the imaged areas are aligned.

Uneven black splotches encroaching on screen from top and bottom

My screen recently began showing some white patches at the bottom, but black splotches forming a line at the top and bottom have appeared today--it looks as if some dark liquid had seeped under the screen from both edges. It has not been in contact with any liquids. Is anyone familiar with this problem? Thanks

Thanks. Actually, I now know it is some kind of moisture, though I don't know how it got under my screen. The G4 had been sitting on my desk unused for 5 days. Once I started using it again, I found that the splotches on the bottom of the screen disappeared over course of a day. Today I set my G4 on a table upside down with the screen hanging over the side. Within 15 minutes splotches started to seep in from the bottom again. I live in the tropics, and will go to a Mac service center to find out if the problem is common here (it's the first I've seen of it in 2 years), and how to deal with it.

White splotches in screen

Mac Book screen has white blotches; which started w/ just a little spot and continually spread through out the screen. As where I live does not have an apple store, I contacted apple in 2011, and never received a response. Now I am finding out that this was a problem experienced by others with Mac Books. I work in the ER at the main hospital in my town. I am working on my Masters Degree (online) and this problem is becoming so visible.
As this is an apple product, and I was not aware that this problem was being experienced by others; I am looking for assistance from Apple in replacing my product. From what I have read, I see this as a product defect.
Who do I contact and does anyone have any further infromation on this subject?

24 inch LED uneven white value

I recently purchased a 24inch display, refurbished. I do love the display but the overall white it not true throughout the display. It's truo on the top half, but then fades towards the bottom to a yellowish tint.
Ive made an appointment to the genuis bar but I was wondering, since I bought it refurbished can they not do anything for me?

Same problem with mine. How was it solved in your case? Did you get an replacement?

Uneven backlight is "normal" on retina MacBook Pro?

I bought my 13'' Haswell retina MacBook Pro days ago, I've experienced the unresponsive trackpad issue and I'm happy to see it's already resolved. But now I've encountered a new issue, and it's about the display.
As the picture above shows, in low ambient lightning coditons, I can clearly see the brightness is uneven, the top left corner and the left bottom of the screen is brighter. The center of the screen seems brighter, too. But please ignore it because I suppose it's because of my poor phone camera quality, I don't see any significant brightness with my eyes.
I was considering replace it at first, but later I called Apple, the advisor told me it's "normal"!!! Actually, he said according to my description, my symptom is not very profound, of course I can get a replacement if I insist, but he really can't promise I'll get a better one since it's a normal issue on IPS displays...
To my knowledge, among all the Macs, only iMac and retina Macbook Pros use the IPS technology. I agree that my sympton is not that profound. The first time I noticed it is when I try to watch a movie in a dark night. In normal use, I can't say I have much bother. Except when I let the browser enter the full screen mode, since most sites use a white background, then I can see a small area of the left bottom of the screen is a little whiter, which is not profound but kind of distracting though.
I've asked one friend of mine who used the 2012 rMBP and he said he have the same condition too... So now I really wonder whether it's a common issue as the advisor said. Please download this full black image, open it and go to the full screen (or presentation) mode. Turn off your light and increase the brightness of your screen if it's set too low. Then check whether you have the same issue with me. Thanks a lot!

Yes, I also have the same problem on my late 2013 rMBP. I've returned the model 4 times already due to various defects. Can anyone see the uneven white balance from left to right screen where left side looks more yellowish?Very disappointed at the quality of the screen. Looks like this is "normal." Should have purchased the New Samsung ATIV 9 instead.

Anybody seeing Screen Flaws (Uneven Tint, Dark Spots, Bookspine, etc) on iPad Mini 2?

Those of you that just have received the iPad Mini 2, can you check the screen for uneven whites / tints, dark spots / book spines? You can check by setting your background color to all black or white. If you are lazy to do this, just open up an internet browser and open up a page with white background. Check for uneven whites / tints. Report the color of your white / tints and where they are located.

How do I create an "inked" transition with my .tif file of designed text?

I created a custom logo in Photoshop that is black text with a transparent background. I want to drop this on a background in Motion or FCP and have it dissolve in an uneven, ink-splotched manner. I've seen this effect before, not exactly sure what search terms to use to locate a FAQ or tutorial, no luck thus far.

DVD Playback on Computer and Standalone-Player

Hi,
Since a lot of people here author DVDs professionally I wonder how you handle the quality-subject with your customers. Generally I wonder about the differences between standalone players on one hand hand on Computers or Laptops. Different monitors and especially different DVD Software players seem to have a major influence on the quality beside the qualityloss from scaling PAL or NTSC up to computer monitor resolutions anyway.
I already had 2 customers complaining abouth the quality (always on computer-playback!). Standalone-Playback is fine, but computer-playback gives some real bad results with DVD-SP authored DVDs.
I tried tweaking some of the settings in DVD-SP and checking colorlevels/optimizing my menu graphics in Photoshop... which made it a little better. Now one computer gives OK results in fullscreen-mode, the other one blurs like **** and the third one even gives unbelievalble pixelation in some parts of the picture (seems to dislike the colour red... and its not even a full tone!).
Now with these results, how do you handle complaints of customers who get real bad results on their hard/software??
And generally when authoring DVDs, which is more important for you ... standalone-playback or Computer/Laptop-Playback. This issue seems also pretty important for designing the menus, so I wondered why I rarely read about the problem?!

I know that every project is different... at least it should be. In our case nearly every customer wants one thing that fits all to save costs... that is content-wise as well as for the medium its delivered on. Since DVD is the new standard most customers want DVD. Unfortunately most use the DVDs on their laptops for presentation, but also want to have DVDs to hand out to customers. This way its hard to get an optimal solution.
So in my case... the problem is mainly the menus that the customer wants for interactivity and technical details beside the movie on the DVD. Until I saw those awful pixelations I thought that would be a solution.
Now if I change to another way like clips with other codecs or Flash/Director-based Menus I basically get new problems like customers missing codecs and plug-ins, incompatibility between MAC/Windows machines? So I am trading better quality/resolution for perfect handling and a standardized medium.
Do you often work with any other interactive stuff like Flash/Director or HTML-based solutions in which you include movies? Basically it sounds like DVD-Menus for interactive content are a deadend unless the HD-Standard saves it soon.

Yes, I experienced the problems badly and it reminded me of the awful work webdesign used to be.
I don't know what to improve on my DVD menus, I work in PAL 768*576 compostion resized to 720*576 for the aspect ratio. No fulltone colours or full whites in the menus, no serif fonts and the DVDSP-Settings to software-based rendering and a constant bitrate of 7. Comparing to other menus I am not too far off qualitywise anymore, but the computermonitor display really screws it up and I wonder how to get this message to our customer and avoid in future projects.
BTW... I saw some still menus which looked even worse on computermonitors than my first ones and it looks like motion menus turn out best. Could that be true that motion-menus turn out better in MPEG2 than plain Photoshop-stills??

5800 XM Photo Gallery Crash ? Firmware suggession ...

Hello , in my 5800 XM. The photo Gallery crashes every time in loading thumbnails when browsing. I got more than 100 pics and it keeps crashing when scrolling.
Plz tell me if its the latest firmware ( v52.0.07 ) or its my 2 GB external memory or phone's memory?
If it is the firmware problem, Plz fix it and release a stable firmware soon with improvements aspected like home screen widgets and bugs fixed like white box in menus.
If it is the memory than optimize it too, i've also tried a custom firmware and photo gallery was much smooth.

Don't think it's firmware otherwise there would be a whole heap of users with the same problem. I'd suggest tranfering all of the pics to your PC, checkdisk your MMC and then transfer it all back to your MMC to see if that has fixed it.
If not, you'd probably have to go the hard reset option. Sorry.

X11 in full screen mode and screensaver

I am having issues with the X11 utility running in full screen mode. When I return from the screensaver, the system returns to the mac desktop rather than X11 full screen mode, but the windows from the X11 session still appear on my screen but some appear completely white - I can't quit X11 because nothing appears above these white windows (including the confirmation window to exit X11) and I cannot move of these windows.
I have tried to use the Command-option-a keystroke with no success. Only after a significant period of time can I force quit from the Dock - but sometimes the white windows cover menus generated from the dock so I cannot access "Force Quit". I have been able to replicate this behaviour.
Is anyone aware of this issue and is there a remedy?

Does this happen if you activate screensaver then a minute later try to return from it, or only after waiting a while? Does your network connectivity change while screensaver is activated? Do you have the same problem if you switch to a different application before the screensaver activates?
