Unexpected application switch when typing in Lion

Since installing Lion, when typing an email or in the address bar of my browser I often suddenly switch applications.  Has anyone seen this (Lion and iMac) and what fixes might work?  Since installing all I have done to modify my system is the NAS fix suggested at http://www.alexanderwilde.com/2011/04/os-x-lion-c

It is possible that you have switched the keyboard layout by accident.
* http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258824 - How to change your keyboard layout
Windows remembers the keyboard layout setting per application and you may have changed the keyboard layout by accident via a keyboard shortcut.
* http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306993 - HOW TO: Use the Language Bar in Windows XP
* Make sure that you have the Language bar visible on the Windows Taskbar
* You can do that via the right-click context menu of the Taskbar: Toolbars > Language Bar
* Check the keyboard language (keyboard layout) setting for the application that has focus via the icon on the Language bar
* You need to do that while Firefox has focus because Windows remembers the keyboard layout setting per application
* The default key combination to rotate the layout is the Ctrl+Shift or Alt+Shift combination that Firefox uses for some menu items
* To avoid an unintentional switch, assign a specific key sequence (Alt/Ctrl+Shift+number) to select keyboard layouts and remove the key combination to rotate layouts (Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift)
* Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Languages > Text services and input languages > Details > Key Settings > Change Key Sequence

  • Applications stay when installing mountain lion?

when I update to mountain lion do I lose old applications/have to reinstall 3rd party software?

No it will not erase any third party applications. That said, you should always have a good backup to restore from in case of any problems at any time.
Check to be sure your older apps are compatible with ML.

  • Application switching disabled in OS X Lion

I installed OSX Lion and now application switching (command + tab) does not work. How do I enable it?

Well now it's up. But it's buggy. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be related to full screen apps. When I have terminal set to full screen as an example sometimes (not always) application switching will turn off.

  • Application switcher - doesn't work right in Lion

Just switched to Lion on my MacBookPro. I used to use a four-finger swipe to get the Application Switcher to pop up -- Sooo useful for me, espeically to get back to the Finder quickly and sooo much faster than going to the Dock. Anyhow, now it seems like Application Switcher is only accessible via the cmd+tab keyboard input, and I can't find it in the Applications folder. Mission Control and Launch Pad don't do the same thing. I need to have a gesture for it, and not have to use the keyboard. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Melanie

You are welcome. Under Lion, the application switcher no longer includes hidden apps. I'm not sure if I like that or not, yet. In any event, when you look at Better Touch Tool be sure to check out it's own special application switcher mode in the tab predefined actions. Also, since you are into using the application switcher, take a look at Switcher Maestro (www.switchermaestro.com). I've just come across it and haven't installed it yet, but you might be interested. It appears to have a number of useful options.
    Good luck with Outlook!

  • Macbook Pro switches order of letters when typing fast

Attention: If you seem to make more mistakes when typing on a macbook pro, it's probably not your fault. Letters get switched around.
This is a problem that has been exhibited in macbook pros as early as 2007 and still apparent today. I could never prove for sure it wasn't me making the mistakes, but today I came up with a consistent test case to prove I'm right. Right now using macbook pro retina display. I noticed this today when every time I typed the word "front" it would come out wrong and I'd have to correct it.
    How to reproduce:
-In an extremely swift, rolling motion (lasting no more than a tenth of a second), type the letters "fron". The left index finger goes on the f, the left middle finger goes on the r, the right ring finger goes on the o, and the right index finger goes on the n. Since all the fingers are different, it is easy to type the 4 letters extremely fast. You might notice that conventionally the left index finger is supposed to type the letter "r", but people who are good at typing always subconsciously make small adjustments to fingering which improve typing speed/efficiency, so this is a common practice. In this case, I always automatically use my left middle finger for the r in "front" without even thinking, because optimization of typing speed has become second-nature to me, just like you would type "lol" with two fingers rather than cumbersomely all 3 letters with the right ring finger.
-The fingers should all stay on the keys and keep them depressed throughout this 1/10 of a second typing motion; this is very common in fast typing and has never been an issue in other computers (it would be ludicrous to expect fast typers to meticulously lift their finger up after every letter and make sure there were never 2 keys depressed simultaneously. If there is ever any overlap between keys being pressed, the key that was pressed first should appear first on the screen, not randomly jumbled order)
-You will notice that even though your fingers landed in the order of "fron", what comes out is usually "fnor" or may even be missing some letters.
-This is reproducible while typing inside any application

That is normal. You have to keep objects that have magnets out pf the palm rest area of the computer.
    From Apple:
Macbook Pro goes to sleep when stacked.
“Placing a device that contains a magnet (such as an iPhone) under your computer or on its palm rests can cause the computer to sleep unexpectedly. This can also appear to cause the computer to have difficulties starting up”.

  • HI .. I have a new macmini 2.5 Ghz 10.7.3 Lion, had a problem today ,it froze so I could not shut down using mouse or tablet. used the power switch, when I tried to restart I got audible 'beeps' from it.

HI ....I have a new macmini 2.5 Ghz 10.7.3 Lion, had a problem today ,it froze so I could not shut down using mouse or tablet pen. used the power switch, when I tried to restart I got audible 'beeps' from it. I managed to restart it but kept getting a message come up on one ot the dual screens ' restart using the power swich to turn it off , then press it again to restart.'
This worked okay , but now it just keeps freezing whenever I start it up. I thought the issue could be my old Epson Expression 1680 scanner not being compatible , so I have unplugged it. I also had a look at the new memory I installed when I got it, but this seems not be the problem.
It is connected up to an Eizo Flexscan S2231W using a cable straight into the HDMI input , the other monitor is a small Acer using the VGA into Thunderbolt port.
When I turn the Eizo screen on first and then press the power button on the mac-mini, I hear the chime then the screen flahes the 'Digital no signal' message on and off for about 30 seconds , then the monitor comes on as normal. But it is still freezing up on me after using it for a while and I am having to use the power switch button to turn it off again.
    Can anyone help please.

I really don't have an answer for that one. I guess that while trying to get things working correctly, I would use the most basic monitor I had which in your case would be the Eizon using the Thunderbolt port and adaptor.
When you boot into Safe Mode the startup is quite slow, but you should get the Apple logo and then the spinning gear below it (release the SHIFT key when it appears.) Then after a little more time you should see a gray progress bar appear below the spinning gear. When that disappears the computer will startup to a login screen.

The install icon has this sign on it

You can't install Lion over Leopard. To install Lion, a requirement is Snow Leopard. So you can either upgrade to Snow Leopard first or you can make a bootable Lion install disc and use that to wipe your hard drive and install a fresh copy of Lion.
So to make a disk would require you to purchase Snow Leopard and upgrade to 10.6.8 so you can use the App Store, unless you have access to another computer to download it from with your Apple ID. Remember it is about a 3.4GB download.
    Good Luck

There should be something that allows me to switch back and foth between Japanese and English...or is that in Windows XP and not in the browser?

After an update or installation, your MBP may take some time to index its files. Give it some time - but if you don't see any improvement, post here - you'll get an answer!

  • How are applications handles when Lion installed?

How are applications handled when Lion is installed?
    1) Are the standard (i.e. App store, phone booth, iPhoto, iCal, etc) automatically reinstalled?
    2) How is iTunes handled? iMovie?
    3) How is Mail handled? Will it automatically reinstall my Contacts, Mail folders with all of my saved emails?
    4) How are 3rd party Apps handled that are located in the Application folder? in a separately created foldeer?
    5) How is Time Machine handled? with all of its past backups?
    Thanks

If you install over Snow Leopard, you'll get new default Apple apps.
iLife, iWork, and 3rd-party apps wont be disturbed (although PPC apps will no longer work).
Mail will be updated, your stuff will be covered..
    Time Machine just continues on.
By all means, back up first, just in case something goes wrong.

  • Has anyone experienced lagging when typing on the mac since the mountain lion os x update?

    hey everyone,
i'm a newbie to this kind of stuff but just curious if anyone has experienced any kind of lag when typing since the mountain lion update. I find then whenever i'm typing it doesn't show up and as soon as i start deleting my sentence it will appear again.
also, when scrolling over a highlighted word, your typical menu box will drop down. As soon as it drops down it leaves a big white blank where it was and cuts out everything that was in its path.
please let me know if this is something that can be fixed or if apple's working on something to amend the issue. thanks everyone!

  • Cursor jumps when typing in all applications

As I type, in any application, the cursor jumps up and inserts itself into a line several lines above. It happens in Mail, Gmail, Pages, Notes, Text/Edit, Microsoft Word, and as I type this document. The problem has existed from when I first got the MacBook a month ago, and continues despite numerous suggested fixes by Apple Care. In addition to the trackpad I use a wireless optical mouse with the nano receiver plugged into computer’s USB port. Earlier I had the mouse in a USB hub; I stopped using the hub. No phones or electronic devices are close to the computer.
When typing I don’t touch the trackpad, but the heel of both hands hovers over its top right and left corners.
The cursor was jumping before I installed Office for Mac, and after it was un-installed during two OS re-installations; MS Word does not seem not to be the culprit. The problem is frequent but intermittent, and hard to isolate or find a trigger. Although not constant, it is distracting and time-consuming to untangle an affected paragraph. I need to use a mouse when typing, but also like to have the trackpad for scrolling and changing documents.
On the advice of Apple advisors, I have:
Erased and re-installed OS 10.9.5 (twice).
    Re-installed Pages, Numbers, Keynote.
    Re-installed Office for Mac (twice).
    Rebooted in safe mode.
Re-set PRAM and cleaned out RAM.
Repeatedly disabled/re-enabled trackpad. (SysPref>Accessibility), trying to isolate issue.
    Tried using another mouse.
Tried using trackpad only, no mouse.
    Tried changing fonts.
Monitored my typing to see if I am brushing any odd combination of keys (I type fast but make errors).
Could it be a conflict between mouse and trackpad? Am I mistakenly hitting an odd key or key combination? Could it be related to the heat of my hands hovering over trackpad? Grateful for anything that leads to a solution.
MacBook Pro (mid-2014), Retina display. OS 10.9.5 fully updated. 16GB RAM, 512 GB Flash

I had the same problem. Visit http://support.toshiba-tro.de/KB0/TSB4700HI0007R01.htm and you'll find the solution. I hope so.

  • Applications won't open after switching from Mavericks to Lion!

I just restored my harddrive after trying to go back to Lion from Mavericks. After doing so, I tried opening up pages but the message "You have Mac OS X 10.7.5. The application requires Mac OS X 10.9 or later" keeps popping up. iPhoto, iBooks, and desktop/screensaver also wont open! help!!!!!!!!! ( I use a Macbook Air)

It sounds as if after you installed Mavericks your computer made a new backup so your most recent backup includes the Mavericks applications. When you reverted to Lion I'm assuming you used TimeMachine to restore your applications and data. Doing so resulted in the Mavericks version of Mail, etc getting installed. They won't work with Lion.
Sberman's idea may work. Open TimeMachine and 'go back in time' to when you still had Lion installed on the computer. Then restore the built in applications. That would involve all the built in Apple programs only. It may work. I've never tried it.
