Unexpected background data traffic?

Hi,
Just successfully connected and started using BT Broadband today via a Dell Studio 1749 and BT Home Hub3A.
However, when I connect a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop via an ethernet cable, after an expected initial burst of internet traffic, it settles down to a steady 10 KiB/s (approx.) of internet traffic both in the upload and download directions! I use a simple monitor utility of internet traffic called 'Netmeter' to view the activity.
The O/S on the Dimension is 'XP' with SP3 and has the latest Windows updates loaded. There are many applications loaded on the p.c., but using 'Task Manager' I cannot find any obvious rogue programmes or processes running that are the likely cause of the traffic! 'Norton Internet Security V18.6.0.29' is the anti-virus programme. My previous 'ISP' was 'O2' with a Thomson router, and there was no such activity when using that!
With 'BT Broadband Option 1' I'm obviously concerned that my 10GB download limit is being eaten into at a startling rate if I leave my 'Local Area Connection' enabled.
Not a lot to go on I appreciate, but does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing the traffic, or how I can drill down deeper to find where the traffic is originating? Bit strange with similar levels of traffic being generated in both directions, almost as if some kind of 'loopback' on the network card is in operation.
I would add that when I use a 'dongle' from Orange, there is no such problem! I have an old Netgear wireless adapter which I've yet to plug into a USB port and see if that behaves in the same manner.
Thanks

It's not easy to see what programs are transmitting data. It could be almost anything trying to do an auto-update.
If all else fails, then there are tools such as Wireshark (http://www.wireshark.org/) which will look at the individual packets going back and forth. But unless you're conversant with the details of Internet protocol, that can be a bit daunting.
Agreed. Ah..Wireshark, that brings back memories....I remember using that in the dim and distant past. Thanks for the reminder. Know what you mean about Internet protocols, but I should really have a good idea as for my sins I was in the Datacomms business up until I retired a few years back....but I'm a little rusty these days
I know I've made no changes to the desktop since having changed ISPs, the only difference is connecting to a different router, so it leads me to thinking it's more to do with interaction with the Home Hub compared with the Thomson router!
I don't believe it's an application running an auto update as the traffic flow is almost equal in both directions and not at a high rate. Were it an update, I'd expect high data rate in the receive direction and the occasional ack/nak in the transmit path!
When I get some time, think I'll dig out Wireshark and see what it comes up with...thanks.

• No longer possible to fully shut down Background data?

So I'm kind of annoyed with the new Jelly Bean OS. I liked it at first then I discovered that I can't figure out how to shut off my background data, even when I'm on WiFi. I really would like to be able to play around on WiFi without getting charged for it! I have never went over on my data usage because I'm normally just connected to WiFi, but now I've already consumed 90% of my data for the month and I've still got two weeks on my bill. Is this just how things are going to be now? Another way to get my money stolen?
If anyone knows how to shut of the background data on a Droid Bionic on the JELLY BEAN OS please let me know.

That would be a fix for something that was good enough before. Hate to use space on my home screens for a clock. In white was just fine and only used the small upper corner. Other things come to mind too. In the phone icon, used to have your contacts right there. Now only recent and favorites. Bad upgrade there too. My alarm clock froze this morning too. Never had a problem with that in the dock in "bedside mode". Good thing my wife was up and caught it! Yes, it was set properly. The bedside clock was stuck at 4:10 am on the screen and it was 5am already.

• Very high data traffic generated by Nokia Messagin...

Is anyone else seeing really high data use on their phone log following last week's Messaging outage?
Up until last week's outage, the data traffic generated by Messaging was about 5kb an hour (with no new emails sent or received). Presumably this small amount of data traffic results from the Nokia email server "pinging" the phone periodically to keep the connection open.
But after last week's outage and issues with passwords being requested etc etc, I saw that the data traffic generated by the Messaging app has gone through the roof - about 400 - 500kb an hour! Again, this is with no new emails sent or received - so theoretically is just the server pinging the phone to keep the idle connection open!
I reinstalled Nokia Messaging on my phone (E61i) - no difference - the data generated by the Messaging app is still 400 - 500 kb an hour (it stops when I take Messaging offline).
I have friends roaming in Ireland and their phone has had the same problem - the data traffic generated by their Messaging app is sky high and they have had to shut it down because of the high cost of data whilst roaming.
I also newly installed Messaging on another phone (N95) that I have, using a brand new email account and a new T-mobile SIM card, and guess what - that phone also has sky high data traffic due to Messaging.
What is going on?? Can someone at Nokia Messaging please sort this out? Anyone roaming with Nokia Messaging enabled is facing hugh data charges from their network.

The data traffic occurs in phones which are on a home network (mine in the UK) and on a roaming network (my friends traveling in Ireland). Interestingly, I've now checked with another friend who is roaming in Italy and they also use Messaging but haven't seen any high packet data issues with their phone.
The data traffic shows up in the Packet Log, as well as on the actual T-Mobile network account (plus the charges for the data!) Accessing a T-Mobile UK account online shows all packet data use - in this case, 120-150 kb every 15 minutes, whereas before last week it was 1-2kb every 15 minutes.
When I "Go Offline" with Nokia Messaging, the high data traffic stops, both on the Packet Log and network account, so I am 100% certain this is due to Messaging.

Thanks Scott. We can go as high as we need to clear the fresnel zone. There is nothing but an empty parking lot in between the 2 building and about 1500 - 2000 feet of space but I have not done a site survey to see about the 2.4Ghz. I think we are going to need different antennae as well correct? I think the internal ones only go about 626 feet or so. I was thinking about using AIR-ANT3338. your thoughts.
Thanks in advance!

• How to totally turn off data traffic when using ma...

Nokia N8-00:
I only use the integrated gps and have turned off the assisted gps, net based gps and Wi-Fi/Network but when accessing maps it still generates data traffic.
Normally this is´nt a problem but when traveling abroad data traffic costs a small fortune.
In my old N95 when I downloaded offline maps and turned everything but integrated gps off there was no data traffic at all but even after the latest maps updates (i.e. yesterday) it appears that the maps still needs downloading when accessed...
Any suggestions how to completely avoid data traffic when using maps?

Set all destinations to always ask and select no whenever the phone gives you a request, set Maps to offline, and set location to just use intergrated GPS. By the way, just been to Portugal using Vodafone and data charges only about £5 for week, and they've just improved allowances, may be worth checking your service providers web site and see if it's necessary to bother about data roaming, they all tend to follow each other, and Data roaming charges in europe seem to be coming down !

• Background data drained by android system even when disabled

Hi all
I am using Z3 compact and I opted to restrict my background data use. However I found that the Android system keeps draining my mobile data (around 600 mb in a week but my data plan is only 1gb per month) anyways to resolve the issue ?

Hello,
Yes, the following setting has been activated for a long time:
Settings > Data Usage > (Overflow Menu?) Menu > Restrict background data
Apps draining most data:
1. Android OS (Background: 681 Mb, Foreground: 0 Mb)
2. Facebook (Background: 2.12 Mb, Foreground: 289 Mb)
3. Chrome (Background: 128 kb, Foreground: 148Mb)
I wonder why the Android OS can still drain so much background data even under such setting.

• HT201299 what does it mean when you get this message on the Iphone? "online maps consume data traffic"

what does it mean when you get this message on the Iphone? "online maps consume data traffic"

That means that if you use online maps, it will consume data. If you're on WiFi, no worries. If you are on cellular data, then it will eat into your cellular data plan.

• Over 4GB of Background Data, yet connected to Wifi 22 hours a day.

Always had unlimited data and never gone over 2GB. Upgraded to the LG G2, and now almost 6GB of usage. I'm on Wfii 22 hours day and sometimes longer on the weekends. Checked data usage on the phone, Android OS Background Data has used over 4gb. Factory reset my phone and since then, used over 500MB in 5 days. Today I disabled Caller ID, but have read that my 3g/4g symbol should have gone away. IS ok if both are on? 5 previous Android phones never did this, and I've never gone over 2gb.
Already called support. I had them save notes, because I this data usage is not my fault.

I have the same problem, several times during my billing cycle my phone used chunks of data 400MB and larger. Verizon technical support said it couold be Pandora. So I am not going to be expecting a fix from them. I did catch a thread on another forum that had something to do wtih Andriod 4.2.2 trying to upgrade several times a day and causing a ton of data usage which makes a lot more sense. I am not sure how Verizon customer service could have so many calls on the same issue and not even Google to see if anyone else has had the same issues and what might be the cause. Back when I was in technical support we actually fixed problems by research and troubleshooting. For these guys, if it's not on their script it does not exist.
Good luck! For now I have just had to turn mobile data off which is awesome. $200 a month for a phone.....JUST A PHONE. I think I should call an attorney and file a class action against Google and Verizon for causing hundreds of thousands of users to pay data overage fees. Maybe then they will decide there is an issue!!!!

• My iPhone 4S register 3G data traffic even if all the app are closed

My iPhone 4S registers 3G data traffic even if all the apps are closed: whenever I'm not under wi-fi I see the 3G icon lighted up whenever I go trough set icon, or calendar or message device...even if all these utilities doesn't require 3G data. If I just check mobile data consumption I see it increasing of few KB per time.
I don't have neither push notifications nor location on, just I don't understand this phenomenon.
Please...forgive me for my English...I'm writing from Italy and it's not so easy to explain what I'm talking about.

I got...but whenever I open the setting icon, I see 3G becoming lit up and colored and..if I check "mobile data consumption" I can find out that this figure increases each time I check it...just going out and into again this section of the settings. Each time I send a message via SMS I see 3G icon colored and lit up again...even if I'm not using any data connection!!!!To avoid the problem I shut down mobile data conncetion when I don't need it and when I'm not under wi-fi...so I can't tell how much is the 3G traffic data generated during one day.
Just I wanted to understand if there's a different method to avoid it...

• RVL200 IPSEC: Channel all or some data traffic through tunnel, possible?

Is it at all possible to channel all/some data traffic through an established ipsec tunneled connection using the RVL200?
I have successfully established an ipsec connection through RVL200 and RV042 routers and are able to connect to servers/computers behind it.
Now I want to channel all or some traffic through the ipsec-tunnel for computers that reside on 192.168.1.0 subnet of RVL200 network.
Main office - RV042 router - 10.200.62.1
Remote office - RVL200 router - 192.168.1.1
I am trying to use the Advanced Routing option to add static routes but I am not 100% sure if I am configuring the routes correctly.
To give an example of routing DNS requests for HOTMAIL.COM [65.55.72.183]:
Destination IP - 65.55.0.0
SM - 255.255.0.0
GW - 10.200.62.1
Hop - 1
Interface - LAN
For some reason this does not appear to work. I have also tried using the interface setting of WAN and tested - this also does not work.
Can this be done? If anyone has tried doing this I would be very interested in finding out how to configure this.
Cheers.
MP

For some reason the DNS IP settings does not seem to work.
I started looking at the option of using the Quick VPN client which appears to have a setting for enabling Remote DNS.
I have setup a test user on both the RV042 and RVL200 to test if I can overcome the Split DNS limitation. But for some reason I can't connect to either of the two routers. I have installed the client on a 64bit Windows 7 client machine which has the Windows Firewall service enabled.
I keep getting the below error, there is no conflict with the IP address scheme and the password is correct.
Could it be this new client does not support the older Linksys badged RV0xx routers? Because Split DNS is only supported on v3 hardware. The firmware on my RVL200 is v1.1.12 .1.
What should I check to enable connectivity using this client? Or is because it does not support 64bit WIndows 7? I have even exported the certificates for both Admin and User into the C:\Program Files (x86)\Cisco Small Business\QuickVPN Client folder.

• Is there any way to find out what caused Push Services to generate 22 MEGAbytes of data traffic in less than 20 minutes?

Fortunately I was on Wifi when that happened, but my 500 MB data could run out quickly that way. According to Dataman it happened only once and I used only one other application at that time. Testing the same app with comparable usage didn't yield the same excessive data traffic. Normally Push Services comes to about 4MB per day (which in my opinion is already a lot). Though I use Wifi whereever I can, I am now really reluctant to have cellular data enabled and that's completely NOT the point of having a smartphone, or is it?
I hope someone can shed some light on this.

Sorry no, there isn't a way to turn off those reminders.
You can send Apple a feedback here http://www.apple.com/feedback/

• Background Data Restriction

I keep getting this notification saying background data restriction and it says to "touch to remove restriction"
What does this mean and how do i make this notification to stop popping up.

i have the Bionic, and after FOREVER with Verizon, i finally called Motorola, who did a soft reset. (phone on, battery out, hold the power button down for 15 seconds) as soon as i was powered back up, the notification was GONE! YAY!!
then? i went to update apps...and google play store sent me a message..."data background has to be enabled for apps to function properly"
so its the google playstore that's doing it! not a setting with verizon.
mystery solved. I did not enable...we'll see how the updates go.

• Weather Channel App. Uses lots of background data

The Weather Channel app uses alot of background data, if I restrict background data, it says it may cause an app to stop working when only mobile available. Does anyone know of another weather app that would not use up so much data? Or is there a setting on the weather app itself that would help use less data?

I had the same problem. I switched to the "Go weather" app. it takes up less ram while running in the backround and it gives you the option to choose how often it will update the weather. Most weather apps will update every 10-15 minutes and so that will eat your data. this allows you to update manually whenever you check the weather so it doesn't use your data much, if at all. Hope that helps
