Unexpected behavior with Color Sampler Tool

Hi,
I have a small AppleScript that used the Color Sampler Tool to place two color samples on an image. I am able to read back the (r,g,b) color values for these color samples, but the results in the script do not always match the info windows. It looks like Sample Size is always Point Sample when I read back the values in the script, even if the Sample Size is currently set to something like 11 x 11 Average.
I am running Photoshop CS3 Extended on a MacBook Pro. A copy of my script is attached to this post.
Does anyone know of a way to get the script to return the values using specific sample size settings?
Thank you
-- Bennett

Wow, that's too bad. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can do the following then?
A. Determine what the current sample size is in the toolbar.
B. Compute the correct average values using a combination of the position information from the Color Sample and the sample size from A.
By the way, my eventual goal is to build this functionality into an Automation plug-in, so if you have ideas that are not possible in AppleScript but would work in C/C++ I would be interested in learning about those as well.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers

  • Problem with Color Sampler Points

I'm using PSCS4 on a Mac Pro, and recently upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.3 from Leopard 10.5.8.
I regularly use color sampler points in Photoshop when adjusting curves. I seem to be having problems getting a sampler point to show up in the info palette when shift-clicking with the eye-dropper tool, or directly using the color sampler tool. I've also tried shift-clicking from within the Threshold command, but the points I click just don't seem to take a sample and show up. I never had this problem before. I'm bringing RAW, sRGB and ARGB digital images into PS from Bridge, and have tried 8 and 16 bit.
After trying for awhile, sometimes it just suddenly starts working again. For instance, I was writing this post after not being able to get PS to take samples. Then I went back and forth between the internet and PS, and it started working all of a sudden. Very odd.
Anyone else seeing this? Am I doing something wrong? Any workarounds?
    Thanks, Lou

Thanks, Mark. You may be right, and I will try it.
I have my workspace setup saved, but I presume it is lumped in with all the other preferences. Is there a way to "Export" my saved workspace setup from Photoshop, so after I trash my preferences, I can reimport at least my workspace? I didn't see the ability to do that, but it may be hiding somewhere. I like my current dual monitor setup and prefer not to have to 'redo' it from scratch.
    Thanks,
    Lou

  • Color Matching using Color Sampler Tool?

Let's say I want to replace a sky in a landscape with a more interesting one with clouds. Is there a way to match the luminosity and hue of the replacement sky to the original landscape by using the color sampler tool? That is, to do the color matching by the number rather than by experimenting with various adjustment layers to get the match?  Thanks!!

Perhaps you could put the new sky on top with luminosity blend mode. The color of the old sky would show through. But this would invariably require brushing.
Replace Color is a better option. In the dialog, set the source color (in sky with clouds) at the top. Destination color (sky without clouds) at the bottom.
Unfortunately this adjustment is not available as an adjustment layer. You'll want to keep the original image, perhaps as an underlying layer, in case you need to go back to it.

  • "color sampler tool" equivalent in color?

    Hi,
Is there an equivalent to the 'color sampler tool' found in Photoshop in Color? I'm looking for a way to sample a pixel or small group of pixels (maybe a 5x5 square?) in a given frame and get numerical RGB data for that sample, but cant seem to find a tool in Color. Does a feature like this exist in Color (and if not, is there a workaround that would give me similar information)?
    thanks in advance!

You can't get an "integrated" medially-dimensioned RGB value picker, but there are three single-pixel samplers available in the RGB scope display. They are explained in the manual as to use, etc.
These numbers are useless in 999,999 out of a million cases. COLOR is not Photoshop, and I don't know many colorists who paint by numbers. "Many" being the numeral "zero". Why, is because there is no "match" tool, and there is no method for directly entering values... only offsets, which is going to be a "poke it and see" kind of process. The only useful application for a COLOR pixel scrub is within Secondaries, which will place a cursor on the HSL curve adjustment windows, so that operator's aren't just stabbing wildly at that adjustment...

  • Brush is constrained to 90º and appears as Color Sampler Tool

I'm having a suprise difficulty with my brush tool in that its cursor appears as the color sampler icon and it is constrained to 90 or 180 degree painting (sometimes just 90). Everything was working normally with my last use a day or so ago.
    Other facts:
    I've downloaded the latest update
    Caps lock is not on.
I'm unable to right click in the options bar and reset all tools
I'd appreciate any help available. Thanks!

Apple released the 10.6.7 update for OS X today. This update corrects an issue introduced in the 10.6.5 update that affected modifier keys while using Photoshop.

  • Need help with color replacement tool ps CS6

I am trying to use the color replacement tool to change the color of a shirt on a picture.  I have choosen white as the foreground color, but when I go to paint it comes out grey.... I tried using colors from the swatch and the same thing is happening.  When I choose a different color say red for example... the color that gets painted is some version of red but not the red that I have chosen.
    What am I missing?

Funny never had to use that tool before. Anyway, what I found play with that tool was the color applied is totally dependent on the luminosity of the color below it. It other words it protects highlights and shadows for example. Which would block it from creating pure white.
To see how this works, the color adjustment layer has an option to preserve luminosity.
But in the end, you will use hue/saturation as it provides greater control. Plus you can clip to a layer or use a mask on it. Can't beat all that non-destructive process going on.

  • Color Sampler Tool bug?

Am I nuts here, or is this something with my particular machine?  I'm running Photoshop CS4 (11.0.1) and I'm seeing the following:
    Create a new image.
    Add a folder.
Add a mask to that folder (I've done this with a raster mask, not a vector)
Create an adjustment layer inside that folder (I've tried this with curves, hue/sat, and/or channel mixer).
Duplicate the folder, and invert the mask on the copy.
Highlight an adjustment layer (either one).
Put out a color sampler inside the area masked by the current folder/adjustment layer. This becomes sampler #1.  This shows the current values (correctly).
Put out a color sampler OUTSIDE the area masked by the current folder/adjustment layer.  This becomes sampler #2.  This shows no values (correctly).
Highlight the adjustment layer in the second masked folder.
Both samplers now show no value (incorrect).
Delete sampler #1.  The new #1 now shows the current values (correct).
Recreate the other sampler (now at #2).  Sampler #2 does not show color values (correct).
Highlight the first adjustment layer again.
Both samplers now show no value (incorrect).
It appears that *all* color samplers are either using the masked area of sampler #1, or combining the masked area of all lower numbered samplers, to determine if they should calculate values.  The workaround is to remove all samplers every time you switch masked folders (which can get a bit insane if you have a lot of masked folders).  This is not the way it worked in CS3.
Can anyone else duplicate this issue?  Or is this unique to my machine?  I'm running a fresh install (less than a week old) on Mac OS X 10.5.8, and I've updated to PS 11.0.1.

    Added version information

Simply put:  Color Samplers will report no information with a Color Adjustment layer selected if it is contained in a masked Group and if the #1 Color Sampler is in the masked region.
The cursor sampler WILL work however.  Unfortunately, I often need the mouse elsewhere while making adjustments.
This makes working in masked groups quite bothersome so any help would be appreciated.

  • Color sample tool

    CS4.
    Windows XP
When I put text into my image (name and copyright) the character window (tool bar) does not let me select a color.  For exampled I will type my name and year on my picture.  Then I select the text, open character tool, select color and then I change the color of my text to something in my picture.  For some reason this quit working on my XP system (but works on my Vista system - laptop).  Is there a simple fix for this ?  I don't want to re-install unless I have to. Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

select the Eyedropper tool and set Sample to All Layers in the Options bar

  • Unexpected  behavior with data control palette after migration to 10.1.3

I recently migrated my adf/struts app to 10.1.3 from 10.1.2.
The app compiles and runs fine in jdev, and the migration had no errors.
When I try to drag and drop attributes from the data control palette onto an existing (or new) page I get the “you can’t drop that here icon” circle with a line through it.
This happens on all my pages and for every attribute in the data control including actions.
Is this the intended behavior? In 10.1.2 there was a section that asked if it should be dropped as a label or text field etc, I don’t see that option anymore.
I can still use the component palette  JSTL 1.0 core “out” and drag that onto the page and then bind the value to binding.attname. this works fine.
In 10.1.3 faces I see that when I drag and drop I get a popup menu which shows the available type of component to drop the item as.
Is this the correct behavior or am I missing something?
    I'm using jdev version 10.1.3.0.4 (SU2)
    Thanks

So as far as I can tell the issue bioled down to having something wrong with my libraries definition. When would go to the project properties the libraries tab would not show correctly, I was able to remove some libraries and then add them back in. This made the libraries tab in the project properties work, and as a side effect fixed the data control drag and drop.
    thx

  • Unexpected behavior with UIWebView and Apple website

I am experiencing a very weird behavior when I try to load the new Apple website (www.apple.com) within a UIWebView. It first loads ok but when it finishes loading the WebView switches to a blank page.
I don't experience this kind of problem with other websites that I have tested. Therefore I don't believe that this is an issue of my application.
Could someone please do me a favor and confirm this behavior?
    Thanks a lot,
    Florian

Actually, Apple has always supported using custom folders in iMap for Deleted Messages, Drafts, Sent, & Junk. But I agree that with the release of 10.7.2 and iCloud with their new Archive feature, they haven't made it easy!
I run my Mac in Swedish, so forgive me if I don't remember or get the exact wording of each option 100% correct, but I'm sure you'll figure it:
In Mail Settings under your iCloud account, and in the middle tab (Mail Box Functions?), under the trash option at the bottom, make sure that:
Move deleted mail to the trash can is Checked!
Save deleted mail on on the server is Checked!
Delete trashed (?) mail permanently is set to NEVER!
Then go back to the main mail window and display the folders for your iCloud account on the LH side
    Select your achive folder.
Go to the Mail Box menu in the menubar, Select "Use this mailbox for..." and then Select trash.
You will not notice that your archive folder now appears under the trash can in Apple Lion Mail (and the deleted items folder that is no longer the trash will appear under the folders).
This works a treat, and in fact I use this for Gmail as well. If you're interested, I have so much mail in all mail, but I want to have everything in Apple Mail. I also get to have a private backup on my Mac (and Time Machine).
So, in Gmail, I have an "Apple Trash" folder which I link to deleted items as above, and which every six months or so I relabel (in the gmail app) to another folder. That way I don't have 50,000 mails in my trash. I don't activate All Mail in Gmail's IMAP because everything I have is always in at least one other folder / lable which syncs to my mac!

  • Lightroom 4 color sampling tool?

It would be nice to have a colour sampler in Lightroom 4 to be able to monitor the use of the new RGB channels in the curve. Is there such an item, or is it possible to have something like that in the toolbox? Something like the Camera raw where you can select mulitple points - or use a modify key to change the eye dropper(Lightroom) into a colour sampler point?

  • Unexpected behavior with dashboard prompts set to "scope = page". Help

    Hello,
I've got three dashboard pages that have a prompt with start/end dates set using ST_DT and END_DT presentation variables. Each of those pages has a report with a column that drills to the same 4th page, a detail report. Each page has it's dashboard prompt scope set to "Page."
I can switch freely between the first three tabs and enter different dates, run the reports, and the prompt dates aren't overwriting each other between tabs. However, if i drill to the detail page from any of those reports and then switch back, the start/end dates prompts are suddenly being overwritten.
Now i know we can prevent this at the report level by using "protect filter," but how does one protect a prompt? To further explain, all three summary pages use the same presentation variables, ST_DT and END_DT. However these presentation variables are not used on the detail page, so i'm not sure why drilling there suddenly breaks the prompt scope and sets it to behave like "Dashboard."

    Update,
I was using ST_DT and END_DT as the presentation variables for each tab. I tried giving them unique names on each tab and they're still getting set if I drill to the detail tab. Since prompts are set to scope I'd expect them to not be set by the detail tab.

  • Ps CS6 Color Sampler Cursor Hot Spot Inconsistent With Rest

I don't use the Color Sampler Tool much, but In checking something for another thread, I noticed the cursor now seems inconsistent with the cursors of the other tools.
Basically, I expected it to drop the sampler on the little crosshair, and it dropped it instead at the end of the dropper.
This used to make sense, and it's still consistent with the Eyedropper cursor (and with prior versions of Photoshop).  But I find that now I've gotten used to the other new cursors, most of which now define the hot spot at the upper-left, it didn't do what was expected.
I guess there's not really a good solution for this, other than to just get used to it.
    -Noel

That's kind of the point, R_Kelly.
Adobe changed the behavior of SOME of the cursors in Ps CS6 to have the hot spot at the upper left, but they specifically DIDN'T change the one for the samplers.  The ones that work that way have something functional-looking at the upper-left of the cursor.
I used to always just know that the end of the dropper was where the action was going to be.  NOW, since so many of the cursors have a shape and that extra little tool at the upper-left, it triggered the expectation that in this case the "thing" at the upper-left was where the action was going to be.
    Here are some examples:

  • Color sample reading funniness?

I am using CS4 and have been using PS since version 1.0. There is one thing about the way CS4 handles color samples that is different than previous version. If I have 3 different adjustment layers and check my color samples, the numbers will change depending which adjustment layer I am on. This doesn't make any sense and makes it harder to adjust color and tone. I am intersted in the final color with all of my adjustment layers combined. If I am trying to match color between files and I have a saturation adjustment layer and a curve adjustment layer above that, and I am keeping an eye on my color samples, if I adjust the saturation layer there is no easy way of seeing exactly what the numbers. While I am on the saturation layer the numbers night be 206,250,77, but then when I click on the curves layer the numbers are 219,251,96. So to really know what the numbers are you need to be on the top most layer. It was never like this before. I know this is normal opporation for CS4, but how are others dealin with this?
Another strange thing I found, and this is just with a particular file, but when I hover the color sample tool about an are I get different numbers under the eye dropper info and I do under my color sample point info. The shot is of a pair of jeans, and it's a pretty large file, around 26"x21"@300dpi. I have my eye dropper sample point set to 101. When I first hover the eye dropper abover the area I want to sample the reading in the upper left of the info pallete is 102,120,153 then as soon as I click the color sample point reading is 150,169,204. This was done on just the background layer, no other layer have yet been added. I even tried blurring the area to get rid of any texture, but still the same issue.
Well I just figure out what the issue is but I thought I would post this anyway. I found out if I zoomed into 100% first, then placed the sample point it worked like it is suppose to. I know that viewing both color and sharpness can vary slightly when your not at 100%, but I didn't think that it would effect the actual numbers?

I agree an altarable "Funny Factor" woud be a useful addition for CS5. Maybe a dial of some sort, turn it up and its funny, down and its not so funny.
Look at your eyedropper options there are checkboxes for Sample all layers and "sample size"
