"unexpected error" shutdowns from Microsoft Office -- a serious problem?

Hello.
I have a brand new MacBook. I recently installed Microsoft Office 2003 on it. Most of the time everything works fine but usually once a day an application just quits. It's not a problem for me to open it up again but I'm concerned that, if my computer is acting up when it is so new, what's going to happen when my warranty runs out!
Do I need to have it serviced? I live in a place with no mac store so it's a big decision for me to "send it in for servicing" (e.g., ship it away for a few weeks). I really don't want to do that unless it is necessary.
Thanks for your help!

HI Eva,
You indicated the Microsoft Office is a 2003 version. Might not be compatible with Mac OS Leopard. Check the Microsoft site. You might have to upgrade your Word software in order for it to work.
Check the boot disk for errors just in case. Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.

After a buffer overflow for which I had to turn off the printer, reboot, and print out the buffer, the printer stopped printing from Microsoft Office. It prints from the Internet and Quicken with no problem. I am at my wit's end. I am no longer eligible for technical support. I need to get it printing with Office again

    Hi there drewbaker,
Thanks for getting back to me with all of the information. As the problem is solely within MS Word and Excel for the most part, I am not sure what exactly could be causing the problem however, check out the links below and they might help. You can also consider uninstalling and reinstalling MS Office.

  • Creating PDF Files from Microsoft Office | Learn Acrobat X | Adobe TV

This video explains how to create PDF files from Microsoft Office products including Office 2010 in Acrobat X Std. or Pro.
    http://adobe.ly/w5Vsg9

I have used Print to PDF from the File Menu in Office many times. Normally it works fine, but for whatever reason, in MS Excel 2010, I have one file that will not Print.
It allows me to select the Adobe Printer and save location, and when I hit "Print" it shows a dialog box for about 1/2 a second, but no progress meter, and the file isn't created. All other files work fine except this one - there aren't any security measures or special attributes in the file, it just doesn't physically create the PDF.
Any thoughts on how to resolve? I have tried rebooting both Excel as well as the Laptop several times.

It sounds to me that you are migrating from a PC computer to a Mac.
To the extent that you are using Microsoft Office on your PC, you should just purchase Microsoft Office 2011 for your Mac.  All of your Word, Excel and PowerPoint files should open easily in Office 2011.  Your contact/mail program, Outlook, is now also supported in Office 2011, but I personally have no experience in cross-platform data transfer for Outlook.  Somewith with cross-platform Outlook experience, please jump in!

    Hi,
Microsoft Office Remote PC is a pretty cool tool, just found this introduction article which includes a Support Forum link for this product in it:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_mobile
I think you probably need to post in this dedicated forum for better support.
As far as I know, they only provide IT Pro level support for Office client here in current forum.

  • Error 500 from Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac and for iOS but not for Windows

I am running Windows Server Standard 2012 as a basic File server and Remote Access Server.  I am able to log into to Server remotely using Windows Remote Desktop Client on Windows 7 and 8 machines without problems
When I try to log in using outside the local network using MRD version 8.0.24308 using OS X 10.9.1 or using iOS 7.0.4, I get the following error:
" The gateway failed to connect with the message: 500 Internal Server Error"
I can also log in remotely WITHIN the local network on a Mac or iOS device, it works without getting an error
    Any Ideas?

My IT person has tried all these and I still get a 500 error when I log in from Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.5.
Here is part of the MRD log dump (not clear where to send the log since MRD doesn't provide an address when you dump the log into email):

  • Importing templates & fonts from Microsoft Office into Pages

At Peggy's suggestion in the Appleworks discussion group, I saved templates and fonts from a Microsoft Office Test Drive, so I can install them into my newly acquired iWork Pages program.
Pages is now installed, but I don't know where to put the templates or fonts from Office.
Can you tell me where they'd go?
    Thanks,
    TeddyZ

    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, Peggy - It's TeddyZ again, but in a different forum. I think I might have completely misunderstood you. I saved all the templates from Office Test Drive (which I deleted, at your suggestion, to avoid those annoying prompts from Microsoft).
These templates reside in a folder on my desktop. They are not documents - just the templates (and their icons).
The Office Template icons are never able to be highlighted, so I can't read them, pull them up, or save them, or access them in any way. Doing a File>Open, etc. yields nothing.
I think I should have methodically made documents using each Office template - they would have then been in a Word format which Pages can read. It would have been a chore, but I think it could have worked.
Unless you or anyone else has another idea, I think I'd better settle for the templates found in Pages. I've only had Pages for a few days - it's not as flexible as I was hoping - but at least it can read Word documents, which is more than AW can do and why I purchased Pages in the first place.
    Thanks again. TeddyZ

  • I have set up iTunes and iCloud with my iPhone 4S but have not been able to get information from the manual for transferring contacts from Microsoft Office Outlook to my phone contacts.  Is this possible and, if so, how are the contacts transferred?

I have set up iTunes and iCloud with my computer and my iPhone 4S but have not been able to determine whether contacts on Microsoft Office Outlook can be transferred from the pc computer to the phone.  Is transfer possible using iTunes or iCloud or other method to transfer the contacts.  If so, what are the steps for making the transfer successful.

  • Tif files from Microsoft Office Document Imaging

I have a photo which I believe was scanned in Microsoft Office Documrnt Imaging. It was saved in tif format (at least what that program called tif format). While the photos are supposed to be in tif format, I can't open them in Photoshop. Any help would be appreciated. (I doubt if I would get any help from Microsoft.)

As PS is very sensitive to formats that are just not quite right (often header info), the use of other programs to Open and Save is usually the first place to try.
From another recent thread, Irfanview (freeware) gets high marks, is a smallish program and seems to open more improperly formed files, than does PS. I've used it, or the old PhotoImpact, or ThumbsPlus with TIFF's and JPEG's that PS refused to touch. A quick Save (same format in a new location) has almost always worked. If one of these does not do it, I head to the next, and then the next. Some files cannot be opened by anything, and it's then back to "square one."
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Which is best for converting a novel from Microsoft Office Word file to editable and sharable PDF

I am a writer who needs to convert a Microsoft Office Word File to a PDF file that can be edited, re-formatted and sent to an on line printing company.  They recommended an Adobe PDF - PDX-1a available with Acrobat Professional.  I don't need photos or graphs, etc.  The cover design is Microsoft Graphic Art.  Sizing, of pages will be 5.5 x 8.5.  Number of pages that size approx. 486.
Can you tell me if the PDF Creator is the one I am looking for?

    Good day,
If your Word file is under 100MB in size, our CreatePDF service should do the job for you to create a PDF file. The file won't be a PDF/X-1a, but if there are no photos or graphics, it may suffice. If you must create a PDF that's PDF/X-1a-compliant, you need Adobe Acrobat Professional.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
    Kind regards,
    David

  • Fpga unexpected error reported from new vi wizard

When i use the new vi wizard , select a new fpga project -> R-series on RT pxi -> create new system
I get a pop up saying unexpected error. I have tried a repair to no avail. I have LV2010 and am looking to use a PXI-7813R
    many thanks in advance
Please remember to accept any solutions and give kudos, Thanks
    LV 8.6.1, LV2010,LV2011SP1, FPGA, Win7

    Hi joedowdle,
Sorry to hear that you're having issues creating an FPGA project.
To prevent this error occurring, it seems that one option that has previously been successful, was to uninstall and reinstall LabVIEW and the additional modules. I do appreciate that this would be rather time consuming, so I would like to try some additional troubleshooting steps with yourself first.
Have you been able to successfully create a standard LabVIEW project without it crashing? If so, could you please try to manually add your R-series card to it please?
On a similar note, are you able to successfully run an R-series example project? You can find one of these through LabVIEW >> Help >> Find Examples. And in the example finder go to Hardware Input and Output >> R Series >> Basic I/O, then select an example.
There are some additional steps that I'd recommend having a look at, in the R-Series user manual which I think is really useful for both explaining where your hardware should appear in the Measurement and Automation Explorer software (MAX) and how to use an example.
As you mentioned your versions of LabVIEW, FPGA and Real-Time, what version of NI-RIO do you have installed? If this is incompatible with LabVIEW 2011 and the FPGA module, this could potentially be the root of the crash. For LabVIEW 2011, you will need to have version 4.0 installed.
    Best wishes,

  • Can MacBook Pro's get viruses from Microsoft Office?

I know Macs cannot get viruses in general but if Microsoft Office for Mac is bought can viruses be attained through it?

    Linc Davis wrote:
According to Microsoft, it is possible for Macs running the current version of Word to be affected by so-called macro viruses:
What to do if your Word for Mac has a macro virus
This is why, when I open Word documents with macros, Mac Word asks me if I want to run the macros. That warning is due to the Word macro virus risk.
Macs can be damaged by Windows viruses under certain conditions. For example, if you run Windows in a virtual machine, and you have enabled a folder sharing feature so that a Mac folder can be modified by both Mac and Windows, it is possible for a Windows virus that erases files to then erase files on the shared Mac folder. And of course if you give too wide access to Windows (like Mac library and system files) then it is theoretically possible for a virus in a Windows virtual machine to destabilize a Mac system.
I haven't used Boot Camp but I imagine that if you share a volume between OS X and Boot Camp a similar risk may exist.
