Unexpected InDesign char style overide with placed word file

When placing a word file that contains a character stlyle into InDesign, I am getting an overide on the char style rather than the expected pure char style. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Greg

OK, that's a real anchoed object, but the question is if the frame is the object, or if something else is anchored in the text.  Was this list in some sort of rame in Word? Does it work better if you save the Word file as RTF and palce that instead?
You can emebed a screen capture of your page in your next post using the camera icon onthe web page:
Please select the frame, then show text threads from the view menu before you do the screen cap.

I wrote an 2500 words assignment and saved in Microsoft word 97-2003 and by mistake replaced with another word file. How can i retain my original work?

    Hi,
Does this happen to all 97-2003 Word files?
Word 2013 now has lots of updates compared with earlier version of Word, lots of features have been updated. Use Word 2013 to open documents created in earlier versions of Word (Word 97-2003 format), you will probably encounter unexpected problems,
expecially for those heavily formatted files.
We would suggest you to convert your document to the Word 2013 file format, then you will be able to access the new and enhanced features in Word 2013.

  • Placing Word File with Character Styles

    InDesign CS5, windows 7
I am hoping for some guidance.
I am creating a directory from an Excel file.  This is what I have done and where I am at.
    1. Edited Excel File to ad "Headers" for Name, Address, etc...
    2. Used Mail Merge in MS word to create a Directory.
         - Created Character Styles in word for different fields.
         - Did some minor editing to remove stray spaces, etc...
    3. Placed wrod file in InDesign.  Layout is created with basic text boxes that are split into 4 columns, each box linked to the next (I have about 30 pages of this).
At first, this was working OK, but the CHaracter styles were not coming through (Actually, they were lost during the merge in Word).  So, I did some work and found that there was a code I could add to the Merge Fields oin Word to force the Character styles to be retained.
Anyway, I did that.  However, now when I place the Word File in InDesign, it appears to hang at "Processing Character Styles".
I removed the code from the merge, figuring I could go back, but I still get that hang.
    Any suggestions are appreciated...

    Any suggestions are appreciated...
I think I followed most of your explanation. But, since we can't see what you're doing, it's hard to know 100% what your reasons are for doing what you do. F'rinstance, I wonder why you're bothering with the Word merge at all. Without knowing why you have to run the merge in Word, I'd suggest this:
add headers to your Excel file
    save out .csv
Use InDesign's Data Merge tool, skip Word entirely
Why do you need to use Word's Mail Merge? If you've never used Data Merge in ID, you should probably take a look at the Help file entry to see if it will work for you.

  • PDF Rendering in Google Chrome [From indesign file with Placed Illustrator files]

I have recently run into problems with files that have been output from Indesign and contain placed Ilustrator files. While the PDF, if downloaded is totally fine [and it views fine in other browsers] when viewed in Chrome it seems to erraticly drop some but not all layers. I realize this is an Chrome issue but I'm curious if anyone else has run into this and, if so, if there is an obvious workaround...
    Thanks!
    David

Well that would be ideal, I agree, yes, but I'm talking about collection of documents that I produce that people view all over the world on our site -- I can't control how they view them and while I assume Chrome is still a minority browser it would be great if I could workaround this issue [without using rasterized versions of the images in the original Indesign file.]

  • Missing images in RH8 with linked Word files

RH8 HTML and MS Word 2007
The images from linked Word documents are not showing up in my RH8 project.
Here's how the project is set up:
The RH project is in its standard location: C drive, in a subfolder underneath My RoboHelp Projects.
All content is included through the Link > Word Document option in RH.
MS Word source files are in a network location (because several other writers are maintaining the source content). There are about 20 MS Word source files.
I have an "Images" folder set up on the network at the same level as the source files, and we link the graphics into the MS Word files from there.
Through my forum research, I have found several suggestions that have have made RH recognize the images in my linked files (previously, we were simply inserting the images into the Word source files, so in RH, the image was ignored and there was simply a blank line with no graphic indicator at all). So I am now selecting Insert > Picture > Link to File as the method for building images into the MS Word source file. I have also found the suggestion to ensure that the images are retained in the document, by selecting Office Button > Prepare > Edit Links to Files, and then checking the option for "Save picture in document" for each of the linked pictures.
When I follow those methods, I now see a red-bordered box where the images should be, and the image file name is displayed in the box. However, I get an error message that says the image files used in each of the project htm files are "outside of the current project and will not be shown in Project Manager."
I cannot figure out where to place the images so that RH's Project Manager recognizes them as part of the project. RH does not automatically create an Images folder within Project Manager. I've tried creating one myself and placing images there (and then even linking my source files to the images within the project folder). But still no dice.
I have tried a volume of troubleshooting options--placing the linked source files and graphics within the project folder, leaving the source files on the network and placing copies in the project subfolders that RH creates after I link the source files into the project, etc etc etc. I've looked for a setting in RH that allows me to set a default location for images (never found one).
Ergo, lots of troubleshooting, and still only half a solution here.
I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone can shed some light. I am doing my best to avoid importing the graphics directly through RH because I want the online help to pick up the exact structure & content of the source files. This obviously negates the option for importing the Word content vs linking it in. In older versions of RH, I was at least accustomed to RH importing generically named images into the project regardless of whether they were copied directly into the Word file, but I see that this is not even an option when linking the source files into the project.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
    Best regards,
    Athena

    Hi Peter,
Thank you for the recommendations. I want to be sure I’m understanding “embedded” the correct way. Do you mean to insert the images directly into the file—i.e., selecting the MS Word option Insert Picture > Insert? Or do you mean to insert them by selecting Insert Picture > Link to File?
Also, could you let me know where in Windows Explorer I should attempt to trace the images? The image source files are stored with the content source files on my company network, in a separate sub-directory for Images (I have tested the build with all the files on my local drive as well). When I link the Word source files into RH and generate the topics, RH does not bring any images into the project folder within the My RoboHelp Projects directory on my local drive.
I have searched through all the project files/directories that RH creates (top-level project folder, as well as subfolders it creates for each Word linked file), and there are no image files (except for one that I placed in my RH master page). I have attached a screenshot of the project folder (MainProjectFolder.png) and one of the linked file sub-folders (LogBookProjectFolder.png).
The problem seems to be that RH is not recognizing an image as an image. RH knows there are supposed to be images in the htm topics because it does have the red box “placeholder” where the images should be, and the image names are displayed in the red boxes (see attached RH_Project.png screenshot). I have gone into the properties for an image and used the Image Name field to manually map to the directory that contains the source image. When I do that, the image then appears in the top-level project folder with the gold & green RH image icon, and it does then appear in the topic. But at that point, if I update the linked Word file, I lose the image again. I have set the topics with images to where they retain the RH image modifications I’ve done, but then the topic shows as broken in my TOC when I update the linked Word file, and those topics do not appear in the build at all when I generate the WebHelp.
Since RH also does not automatically create any kind of Images folder in the project during the process of linking and generating the source files, I have tried copy/pasting the source images into the top-level RH project folder prior to even linking/generating htm topics from the Word source files. But when I go to a topic and view the properties associated with the image placeholder, RH still does not display any of the image files I pasted into the project folder.
I am happy to provide my source file so that you can investigate this further. Please let me know if you need the file with the images inserted directly or if you need it with them linked in (in which case, I’ll send the image files too).
    Thanks,
    Athena

  • Strange Occurrence with a Word File?

My friend has an important Word file, he saved it, but the computer crashed. Now, when he opens the document it lists a bunch of websites he recently visited! Is there any way to get the original file back? What could be going on, is it forever corrupted? Thanks!

Alas, The moment of saving is critical. If the machine crashes at that point anything can happen. Check the size of the file. If it is much smaller than you would expect then it is likeky a gonna. Always backup important files as the say...
    Sorry
    Hope this helps

  • Packaging an InDesign document with Placed Illustrator Files which contain PLACED GRAPHICS!

I've got an InDesign document 215 pages long.  Each page contains a placed Illustrator document... and each Illustrator document contains a placed TIFF.
When I package the InDesign Document the Illustrator files are gathered into the new location, but InDesign does not gather the TIFFs.  I need to get this material to the book designer, but relinking 215 pages is going to be a very risky and time consuming process--one that will have to be done OVER and OVER again as the project moves from one location to another.  Can anyone recommend a solution?  Why doesn't InDesign look for nested files?
Does anybody understand what I'm talking about?
    --Jay

The reason behind link (.psd in layers) means in the future it can be edited.
If the person receiving to package needs to edit the layers of a PSD placed in an Illustrator file, then yes you would have to manually include the layered PSDs. But if it's just a matter of ensuring full res and color managed output downstream then saving as PDF does that and preserves the links to layered files locally. So if I save as PDF trash a link and reopen the PDF in Illustrator it will look for the link:
If you save as .ai with the links embedded, the users downstream would be able to unembed and edit a flattened version of the placed art.

  • Problem with placing Adobe files in InDesign

I'm working on a document in InDesign. I have CS3 Creative Suite. I have used this for a while now and not had this problem, but when I go to "place" and try to insert a "pdf" file, it will not allow me to do it any longer. The error says "Failed to open the pdf file".
Does anyone now what the fix is for this? I use pdf files all the time in InDesign, don't know what has happened.
Thanks in advance for any help that may be given.

    Hi diana,
Is your pdf file get opened in Acrobat or Adobe Reader?? If yes means please check with document properties, is there any security provided to the document.

  • InDesign CS5 causing problems with InCopy assignment file but not content files

I'm having a strange InDesign/InCopy CS5 issue (Mac OSX 10.6.6; all system & Adobe updates are current).  In my InDesign doc I have one assignment file containing two content files. All of the InCopy pieces work fine in InDesign (i.e., I can check out/in, edit, etc.).  When I go to open the assignment file in InCopy, InCopy starts to open  it but then crashes. If I try to open each content file directly in  InCopy, no problem. I've tried deleting and recreating new assignments  in InDesign, but they all have the same result in InCopy.
I think this actually is a problem with the InDesign file because if I export the InDesign file to IDML, then try to open the IDML file, InDesign crashes! I've trashed my InDesign preferences, made sure all cross-references are up to date, etc. Anybody have any ideas what else to look for in my InDesign file that might cause this problem?
    Thanks!
    Andrea

    Thanks John!
    1) Here are the first 10-ish lines from the crash report that is generated when I try to open the IDML file:

  • Trapping Problems with Placed Illustrator files

    Mac 10.5.4 CS3
I am using CS3 to print postscript files and then making PDFs with Distiller. The Indesign file is full of .ai links that are not trapping correctly. When I view the PDF file the overprint warning shows up where the trap is correct.
The Illustrator file has a bottom layer set to a screened pantone color and has a Gaussian Blur effect applied that I can see in the appearance palette (this is to look like a drop shadow). On top of that is a Second pantone color with no effect at 100%. On top of that is outlined text of the first pantone color at 100%. All traps are set to the default. What it looks like is that the trap is showing as white when the file prints. So the text and the second shape have the look of a white stroke. The really confusing part is that blocks of these areas print correctly (no white line).
I have been told by my printers pre-press manager that he has a trapping software that fixes this issue for output so I am covered to get this printed. I want to know why this happens because we have several projects with this illustrator and if I can get her to alter her files as she creates them I wont need to "fix" several hundred files later.
Any fixes for this? Any idea why this would happen?
    Thanks.

If you intend on using transparent effects don't write postscript and then distill. Export to PDF right from InDesign instead. Postscript has no idea what transparency is and so it needs to be "flattened" for it to go through that type of workflow. Thats why the Illy files were ai's and not eps's.

  • MacBook Air with Mavericks: how do I download a web based Word doc with embedded Word files. At moment I cannot access the embedded files on the web (NHS mail) but can on a PC.  Help please.

MacBook Air with Mavericks.  I need to download agendas with embedded files. This is through an encrypted email account. My Mac is blocked from even opening the embedded files on line and I can't save any of this to my laptop.  It works fine on my PC laptop.  Help please.  I know this is a problem for other people too, but would love the solution!

Gee, Pat, this is a  real big help.
Nobody could possibly think anyone would ask for help without first trying to fix the issue oneself. Or maybe you do. I have opened the file and looked under security. I have changed it to owner-notebook (which is what the techs called me) and clicked accept but geepers it didn't work.
Maybe someone else has an idea.
Take Ownership of a File or Folder
The above should be a link. At least I copied and pasted the link. I did what was stated in there. It isn't like brain surgery. But it is not working. I ended up being able to open some pdf files after transferring them from one partition category to another. I wish it was that easy as you seem to think.
Thanks for the help. Have a great year.

  • Maintaining internal links on Word files placed into Indesign

I want to bring a word file into Indesign, which has a very large number of internal links. When I place the file in Indesign, the external  hyperlinks transfer as well as bookmarks, but the internal links do not., The blue colour and the underlining format transfers but the actual links are lost. I don't want to re-link all these links within the document again. Is there a way to bring the internal links into inDesign with the Word file?

    Hi everyone,
I know this is from a few months ago, but I just found it!
I deal with PDFs coming from Word that have to go on press a lot. This is what I know. Word's color space is RGB, so we're already starting out with a problem.
    1. Open the Printers in the Control Panel folder
    Choose the Adobe PDF Driver
    Right click to open Properties
    Go to Device Settings
Convert gray text to Postscript gray: change this setting to Yes
Convert gray graphics to Postscript gray: change this setting to Yes
    2. When you print to Adobe PDF, choose Press Quality job options. This may only show up for those who have the full blown Acrobat installed. If you don't have this, go through all of the job options, especially Color and Fonts. In the Fonts tab, make sure that Embed is turned ON and that there are no fonts in the Never Embed column. If there are, delete them. Under Color, either leave unchanged (which is fine if your doc is all text and you've changed the settings on the driver described above), or choose "Convert Color to CMYK".
    3. Within Acrobat (not Reader), you can view separations: under Advanced menu, then Output Preview. Turn color plates off and on as desired. I usually turn off black and scroll through the file. If anything shows up on the page, I know I have something to fix. (For B&W docs.)
    4. You can fix a lot of things without having PitStop, but if you deal with having to get PDFs in shape to go on press, Pitstop is well worth the investment!
    5. I agree that it's not necessary to place PDFs into InDesign, unless there's something else you're adding to the pages.
    I hope this helps!

  • Line numbers appearing with imported Word Doc - InDesign CS2

For some reason I keep getting line numbers when I try to place a document from Word. I checked to see if Word had line numbering on..nope. I tried saving the file as a .txt and .rtf file and that doesn't help either. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks all,
    ejo

As it happens with standard text as well, it has nothing to do with the Word file.
You probably re-defined your Basic Paragraph style to include paragraph numbers.

  • New MBP, and am having memory trouble errors with MS Word 2004

    Hi,
I know this has been talked about before, but I'm not sure where to post this question. I have a new MBP, with a full version of Word (no previous trial software installed). I have been trying to copy and past basic text files from Yahoo mail, to create a book of emails of sorts. My file size has been approaching my memory capacity (basic setup). Does it not create a swap file and let you keep going if you approach the limits of the onboard memory? I understand it will run a bit slower, but I'm only moving text files and nothing else. Why the proverbial memory/disk full error messages? Does it have anything to do with the software being non universal code?
Do I need to get rid of temporary files, as Im copying and pasting alot? If so, how?
Anyone have the same trouble, and have a clear solution? I could also swear my MPB is running alot slower with Word than I would have expected.
Any help you can give me would b appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

I’ll try to answer your questions briefly without going into too much detail. First of all, I think the error message you are seeing is generated by MS Word and not your operating system. That particular error, and other similar ones, are quite common in Word in particular situations and are the result of a known bug.
As far as I know, there is no fix, but there are several work-arounds. The bug has to do with the number of temporary files that get created when working with large Word files. As you might guess, the larger your file, the larger the temp files, and they will quickly fill up your existing RAM, which then causes the error that generates the message. You have to delete the temp files---you can do that by saving and closing your file, then restart it. There are some scripts you can run, but that is beyond what I want to get into here (and usually is not necessary).
The other problem is that by copying and pasting text from Yahoo Mail, you are not pasting simple text---you are pasting all the HTML code, formatting, and everything else that is contained in that text. And Word saves it all, then adds its own formatting and other code---leading to corrupt files sooner or later.
And then, to make it all worse, if your file is as large as you say it is (close to system memory in size), that is one huge Word file, and Word does not handle really large files very well, especially Word 2004, but all versions of Word, Windows versions included, have trouble with large files.
Word does in fact run slowly on even the newest MacBook Pros because Word is not yet compiled for the Intel Macs and does not run natively as a universal binary but runs under Rosetta, which translates Word to run on Apple computers running Intel CPUs. If you are working with small files, it isn’t too bad, but big files will slow it down to almost a crawl at times, or it will even stop responding for several seconds between each command.
You can work around these problems by breaking your file into much smaller ones, save often (and close the file once in while), and save as a text file, rather than as a doc file.
An alternative is to use another word processor or text editor to save your copied text---there are many that will work as well as or better than Word for what you want to do. Pages is a good alternative----I have to collaborate on Word files every day, and I prefer to work on my MacBook Pro (although I also use Windows-based computers about as frequently, too), and except for the most complex Word files with tables, charts, and pictures, Pages works very well, and you can save the file as a Word document, too, if you need to.
Hope that answers some of your questions----and always remember….I could be wrong.

  • Word files with no extensions  .doc

    Hi
if a start up staroffice 8.0 on linux with a word file, with no .doc extension it's not working.
soffice file (works on solaris, does not work on linux)
soffice file.doc ( works on both platforms)
It looks like the soffice solaris version loads the word filter but the linux
    version loads a wordperfect filter.
Is there a place to configure the behavior.
