Unexpected keyboard characters

Hi,
Last year I accidentally produced a strange little item. Somehow in hitting shift or caps lock , the side of a stray finger hit "something" & I had a symbol resembling the Grateful Dead's "fish-thingy" in a square. I'd reproduce it now, but not knowing how I did it is at the root of my question !
Just now a similar "clumsy moment" produced this guy --> ÅM .
Oh good !, an A w/ an apple on his head !
Where are these guys hiding, & how does stumble into them intentionally ?
-=TIA=-

Hi DmR,
You can see all the characters for any font installed on your system by using the Character Palette. To enable it, go to System Preferences and choose International. Then, select Input Menu in the bar at the top and look at the bottom of the window. There will be a little option box that says "show input menu in menu bar." Check it.
You will see a flag show up in the menu bar. Click on this flag and choose Character Palette. From there you can see all the "hidden" characters available.

  • Feature Request: Support pasting text as a stream of keyboard characters

Please support pasting text as a stream of keyboard characters from a menu click rather than just relying on the remote server clipboard integration.
Often I'm in a situation where the remote desktop integration with the clipboard is disabled. E.g. password change screens. I use a local password manager to create and maintain passwords. These are often ridiculously complex to type. Sometimes they need
to be sent over the wire as characters rather than as a clipboard transfer message. This client doesn't allow this to work and makes it painful to remain secure.
    Please make this less painful.

    Hi Josh,
Thanks for your feedback. But can you let us know which version of MRD client you are using on which device as to clarify and research more regarding your case.
Thanks for your understanding and Support!

  • BI Publisher text file gettin unexpected DOS characters

We just implemented R12 and seem to be getting unexpected DOS characters added to the end of each line : “^M” when we run a report using an etext template. Has anyone run into this?

check the xmlp version you are in, and try to upgrade it to latest for R12 .
unexpected DOS characters, appears only when the font/character is not understood.
if this was due to upgrade then, better get the latest XMLp for r12 patched.

  • Unexpected keyboard codes replacements

    Hi,
It seems that Adobe and earlier Macromedia are nursing
    serious bug well
known from version MX. It lies in keyboard characters
    conversion to strange
codes when right ALT is pressed and <PARAM> "wmode" is
    used (most likely it
happens in mode transparent and opaque only). In consequence
    it is not
possible to enter Polish (and maybe other non-ASCII)
    characters to input
    fields. It works fine in
    standalone Flash player.
There is no place to count Adobe on fixing it and I have to
    do something by
myself. Is it possible to build eg. component or class which
    will convert on
the fly key codes of pressed buttons for TextField. and
    components such as
TextArea and TextInput? How to get down to do that? Any
    suggestions?
    Regards,
    Marek

  • Keyboard characters are  no displaying correctly

    MacBook
    Version 10.6.8
My keyboard is not displaying the correct characters. The letters and numbers are OK but characters such as the question mark, colon, the at sign, etc do not display correctly. I've tried a portable keyboard and the same thing happens.
The software is Microsoft Office 2011 for mac. Is this a software problem?

    Hi vdalbora,
It sounds like another key is being pressed while you are typing. Check out the article below and look at the section for showing the Keyboard Viewer to make sure that when typing, that the right keys are being pressed.

  • My wired keyboard characters above the numbers are not working

I have a wired keyboard. the character symbols above the numbers (not the number pad) are not working. other characters appear instead. Help

Go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and make sure that ONLY the box for US is checked (or whatever keyboard you normally use, we have no way of knowing what country you are in if you don't tell us).

  • Keyboard Characters in Other Languages

    Hi,
Because I'm starting to forget my first language, Spanish, I decided to turn my system into Spanish. Now, the only problem I have is that a few characters that do appear in English, don't appear in the Spanish layout, such as the "@" sign (I had to go to Edit>Special Characters) to get that sign. Is there an easier way to get that type of symbol in the keyboard?
    Thanks
    Alex

If you want to change the way the Spanish layout works, you can make a custom layout with Ukelele:
    http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?siteid=nrsi&itemid=ukelele
By the way, there is no need to use the Spanish layout to type Spanish. The US layout can make all the Spanish special characters via Option/alt shortcuts. Here is a list:

  • German keyboard/ characters

I'm a really new mac user! I need to be able to type German accents EASILY and can't figure out how to do this? Reset my keyboard or ... HELP!

    Hi, Fortuna1 -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
    Two assumptions I'll make -
    (1) That you are using Mac OS 9 (since that's the forum in which you posted)
    (2) That you are after the umlaut characters and the funny double-S
If you currently have the US English Keyboard Layout active, you can do the umlaut by pressing the key-combo Option-u followed by the character you want. Works with capitals, tooExamples -
    Option-u plus a types ä
    Option-u plus e types ë
    Option-u plus i types ï
    Option-u plus o types ö
    Option-u plus u types ü
    Option-u plus y types ÿ
    Option-u plus A types Ä
    (etc.)
For the ß character, press Option-s. I think this may actually be a capital beta (Greek letter), but it bears a close resemblence to the old German character.
    <hr>
You can also reset the keyboard to a German keyboard layout. This makes accessing some German and European characters easier, but means having to learn a new pattern for the keys. If you want to try that, make sure that German is checkmarked in the list in the Keyboard control panel. Once more than one language is checkmarked in that control panel, a small flag icon will be added to the main menubar, which represents the keyboard language menu. You can then use that new menu to select the language layout you want activre. You can use the utility Key Caps (usually found in the Apple menu) to see what's where in the new layout.

  • JTextArea & non-keyboard characters

    Hi,
I have a couple of queries relating to using a JTextArea....
    i) I've created a JTextArea to use as a 'logs' window, and placed it in a JScrollPane. I expected that adding text with the append() method would keep the latest text in view, but in fact I have to scroll manually to see the latest text. How can I make this scroll-to-end-on-append automatic?
ii) I'd like to display simple non-keyboard letters (like an accented 'e' \u0233) but this doesn't seem to work. I used something like Font envfonts[] = gEnv.getAllFonts() then looped through with envfonts.canDisplay('\u0233') but this returned false for all available fonts. What else should I be doing to make these characters displayable?

    i) well, i have had that first problem myself, i tryedd to scroll it down using scrollbar, every time some text was added, but last line was not visible still.
but. recently (yesterday maybe) i looked at some simple a chat-client code, and it had implemented this feature by seting caret position to the end of document.
    it seemed to work.
anyhow, this scrolling thing is with AWT components somewhat op sys dependent (it scrolls automatically on some os's and it doesn't on others), at least it used to be at 1999...
    anyhow, a snipet:
mOutputArea.setCaretPosition(mOutputArea.getDocument().getLength());ii) i believe it might be done when you use JEditorPane and some HTMLKit on it, so you could present your number in such way &u0233; and maybe this component will know how to write it out.
but on this i'm not sure...
you could also try to show it on JTextArea with different fonts, maybe this canDisplay() has a bug in it?

  • Document prints with unexpected font/characters

Does anyone have any suggestion on what could be causing my documents to print unexpected characters (See example at link: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1208515/img-401083122-0001.pdf). I'm on Windows 7 with the latest version of adobe reader.
I'd appreciate any help or advice.
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply Pat.The original document is being opened from from a webpage within firefox using the adobe reader plugin. I tested the same procedure within chrome and the document will print without error. i guessing thats because chrome has it's own internal pdf reader.

  • Keyboard characters display option

Is there a way to get my keyboard to show non-letter characters (! , " ? & etc.) as a press-and-hold option, without switching to the 123 keyboard? My HTC Incredible did this, and so does my friend's Galaxy S-III, which is about 1-2 months older than mine. Thanks!

        ddegrazio,
You know, you pose a great question, however there isn't a way to get to the non letter characters without pressing the 123 multiple times.

  • Finding Alternate Keyboard Characters

I am trying to find out how to type non standard characters in OSX (example the ® synbol.. which I know is option + r)
In OS9 there used to be a little application that would show you all the keyboard combination (I think it was Key Caps) But is there something in OSX that does that or where can I get a listing?
    Thanks
    PowerMac G5 2.0 Dual Mac OS X (10.4.5)
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

There is still key caps, but you get it in a different way.
    System Preferences–>International–>Input
Then look through the list until you find Keyboard Viewer. Once checked, you will get the "Flag" menu in the upper right of your menu bar, US Flag if you have an US English based OS.
If needed you can click on the green dot to make it bigger. (Most likely needed!)
Also I always encourage folks to memorize the locations of the special characters. They have mostly been in the same places since 1984 and some though was given to their placement. Like the cent mark is the option of the same key the dollar is on, and so on. There is a mnemonic for a lot of them, if you look for it.

  • KeyboArd chArActers help....

my mAcbook pro keyboArd hAs four chArActers which only type in upper cAse As you cAn see. those being the A Q Z And ! (one) Any ideAs?

Use a can of compressed air or a brushed vacuum hose to clean out the dirt under the keys.  If that does not work, your issue is probably hardware related.  Especially if you spilled liquid and did not clean it properly.  If you are still under warranty or have Apple Care, call them and get a case number.  Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.
Liquid damage is not covered under Apple's warranty.

  • How to remap keyboard characters?

I'd like to remap my Russian phonetic keyboard layout to match what this guy did for the Mac: (scroll down to Usage to see the layout that I'm wanting):
    http://www.users.bigpond.com/sphynx1/RussianPhonetic/
Does anyone know what files I can edit to get these results?

I'd suggest xmodmap (1) in X; for the Linux Console, you can probably use some dumpkeys- (1) & loadkeys- (1) -fu to do what you want.

  • Wireless keyboard characters not typing, Battery tip.

To save people a lot of head scratching, resetting PRAM and wasting time.
If you are having strange problems with your wireless keyboard check the batteries.
My uppercase T was not working, tried everything resetting smc, pram, starting in safe mode.
I had previously replaced the batteries but had no high quality types, duracell etc that I normally used so used I cheaper ones. The battery indicator showed they were 80% so don't go on that.
Once I had replaced the batteries with duracell, the other higher quality ones such as ever ready are just as good, the problem rectified.
Moral of the story use good batteries.

Yes, that is the moral to the story; all too often the dime a dozen batteries are to blame.   Just to add to your useful observation; rechargeables are also good to have and use.   Put them on charge when it suits and change them in moments.
But one small point.   It is said they do not show their real charge status and are sometimes 10 to 20 % out.   Be aware.
