Unexpected performance drop/temperature rises

Mid 2012 Macbook Pro
2.3Ghz intel i7
4GB 1600MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024MB
Non retina (1440x900)
I have windows 8 installed (using bootcamp)
Using osx Yosemite
The issue:
Recently, my mac has been overheating to the point of it being far too hot to touch, and while using demanding applications I have experienced large performance drops. I have been using these applications for a long time, and this is only a recent development. I've tried running diagnostics, but for some reason was unable to connect to the internet via wifi or cable. In an attempt to increase ventilation, I've had the back of my macbook (where the fan exits are) propped up slightly on a book. This has done nothing to reduce operating temperatures. The performance drops have also impacted less demanding applications, such as chrome. I think that there is an issue with the cooling system, but I'm not sure if that's the issue. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, and if I can fix it? Also, my mac is still covered by my AppleCare extended warranty.

Great!  Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.
In the mean time I suggest that you open the MBP and see if there is dirt and debris inside.  Look especially at the fan.  If so clean it out.  You will need a #00 PHILLIPS driver.
You might also consider installing iStat menus and see exactly what temperatures you are experiencing:

Try on start up OPTION+D and see if that will engage the Apple Hardware Test.
Ciao.

  • Temperature Rises with audio

    Hi!
    When you ear some music in your machine the temperature rises from 87F to 136F.
    Some people refer this to iTunes but i tested with other audio software and is the same thing.
    ex: Cog, VLC, etc...
    Is this normal????? I know this processor can take high temperatures but in the past the Dual G5 burns up in two years of work and i don't want to buy another Mac Pro in two short years...
    Gaming in BootCamp stresses a lot less the CPU temperature... odd don't you thing?

    Hi!
    Listen Music / Word type of thing / More than 10 Web Pages with Flash, video and pop up windows /
    MP3 Decoding and Video Convert...
    Tested in BootCamp:
    Windows 7 Ultimate
    Normal temperature is 107,6F (less in OSX) :))))
    Gaming goes from 118,4F to 132,8F
    The graphic card, in this case ATI 4870, goes more cooler in W7 around 149F ... in OSX goes around 158F
    If this explanation is correct, from macrumors forum:
    I asked someone I respect in the industry, whose apps I have used for a long time, including Hardware Monitor and others apps, what his opinion on this issue is. He's been my go-to man in the past for the final say or at least some really good insight. He is Dr. Marcel Bresink. http://www.bresink.com/info.html
    He wrote,
    "I would guess what you are experiencing is basically the combination of
    Snow Leopard's advanced power saving techniques and Intel's Turbo Boost feature
    which is present in all CPUs based on Core i7 technology.
    If the total load on the system is low, Snow Leopard will first
    * stop to schedule processes for the virtual Hyperthreading cores (cores 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16),
    * stop to schedule processes for the secondary processor package (cores 9, 11, 13, 15),
    * stop to schedule processes for the first processor package (cores 1, 3, 5, 7),
    in this order.
    When a processor core has nothing to do, the core, or the whole processor package,
    respectively, will be powered down. A core without power will have a much lower
    temperature than normal.
    iTunes is an application which performs continuous real-time signal processing in
    one thread of execution. If a system with Intel Core i7 processor detects the
    situation "one core can be operated continuously, the other cores are idling",
    it will activate Turbo Boost, which means it will overclock one core and
    shut down the others. Overclocking will be done up to a degree where the
    overall temperature of the processor package is still within acceptable limits.
    The lower-than-average temperature readings during idle times, and the
    higher-than-average readings during Turbo Boost result in the temperature
    behavior you have observed when running iTunes on a system with low load.
    The temperature readings themselves are uncritical. You bascially cannot overheat
    an Intel procesor core, because it will automatically throttle its speed before
    this could happen."
    So I'm guessing that prior MPs to 09' were not Core i7, and Turbo Boost is not a feature prior to Nehalem either?
    What's up in OSX?
    Windows take a lot cooler... don't you think?

  • Performance drop around 20% after adding an index

    Hi,
    I have an xml file (around 300 Kb, 3500 Nodes), the application internal works with dbxml handles but for display purposes I need xpaths for each node. First I was calculating them on request, but for requests with a lot of nodes it just takes too long (also memory usage was a big issue). In order to improve the performance I'm building a kind of metadata file after the import of the original document. The structure of this metadata file is:
    <data>
        <node idx:id="<berkeley dbxml node handle>">
            <xpath>...here some xpath...</xpath>
        </node>
    </data>That improved significantly the memory usage, but the response time is still a little bit below acceptable. Now I've thought, that adding an index to that metadata file would do it, BUT it doubled the response time. In the shell (with a much simpler query) the performance drop is around 20%.
    Query in the shell:
    doc("container.dbxml/test.xml.metadata")/data/node[@idx:id="BgIBBQAO"]/xpathQueryPlan without index:
    <XQuery>
      <DbXmlNav>
        <QueryPlanFunction result="document" container="container.dbxml">
          <OQPlan>D(node-metadata-equality-string,name:http://www.sleepycat.com/2002/dbxml,=,'test.xml.metadata',U)</OQPlan>
        </QueryPlanFunction>
        <DbXmlStep axis="child" name="data" nodeType="element"/>
        <DbXmlStep axis="child" name="node" nodeType="element"/>
        <DbXmlFilter>

            <Sequence>
              <AnyAtomicTypeConstructor value="BgIBBQAO" typeuri="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" typename="string"/>
            </Sequence>
          </DbXmlCompare>
        </DbXmlFilter>
        <DbXmlStep axis="child" name="xpath" nodeType="element"/>
      </DbXmlNav>
    </XQueryQueryPlan with index.
    <XQuery>
      <DbXmlNav>
        <QueryPlanFunction result="document" container="container.dbxml">
          <OQPlan>D(node-metadata-equality-string,name:http://www.sleepycat.com/2002/dbxml,=,'test.xml.metadata',V(node-attribute-equality-string,@id:http://www.xyz.de/dnb/index,=,'BgIBBQAO'))</OQPlan>
        </QueryPlanFunction>
        <DbXmlStep axis="child" name="data" nodeType="element"/>
        <DbXmlStep axis="child" name="node" nodeType="element"/>
        <DbXmlFilter>
          <DbXmlCompare name="equal" join="attribute" prefix="idx" uri="http://www.makrolog.ag/dnb/index" name="id" nodeType="attribute">
            <OQPlan>V(node-attribute-equality-string,@id:http://www.xyz.de/dnb/index,=,'BgIBBQAO')</OQPlan>
            <Sequence>
              <AnyAtomicTypeConstructor value="BgIBBQAO" typeuri="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" typename="string"/>
            </Sequence>
          </DbXmlCompare>
        </DbXmlFilter>
        <DbXmlStep axis="child" name="xpath" nodeType="element"/>
      </DbXmlNav>
    </XQueryChanging query to
    doc("container.dbxml/test.xml.metadata")//node[@idx:id="BgIBBQAO"]/xpathslows down the query more than adding the index.
    In my application I've also tried setIndexNodes(true) on my container, the response time increased by factor 10... Am I doing something wrong?
    Please tell me, if you need more information.
    Best regards,
    Wadim
    Berkeley DBXML 2.3.10 (Patches 1-9, Patches 1-2 Berkeley DB)
    Java 1.6
    WinXP Pro SP2

    In my application, without fetching the metadata a query for 10 nodes takes 6ms, with fetching the metadata 6s (so around 1000 times slower).
    I could go down to 4.5s after changing:
    declare variable $METADATA := doc(concat($CONTAINER,'/',$DOCUMENT,'.metadata'))/data;and then in the function:
    distinct-values($METADATA/node[@idx:id = $id]/xpath)to:
    declare variable $METADATA := concat($CONTAINER,'/',$DOCUMENT,'.metadata');and in the function:
    doc($METADATA)/data/node[@idx:id = $id]/xpath I've also seen dbxml:lookup-attribute-index function, but calling ist like this
    dbxml:lookup-attribute-index($CONTAINER,"id")[1]results in:

  • 280x x2-x3 performance drops

    my system is i7 4770k, giga z87-hd3, 16gb ram, win 7 x64 and msi gaming 280x
    Some time ago i saw, what i have big performance drops time by time after loading new levels in game, or reloading save, or just alt-tab in windows and comeback in game (game not important - it can happy in any 3d game). Its happen randomly and can be fixed with just another loading, or alt-tab in win and comeback in 3d game. Other words - every time in game, after im switch to 2D and back in 3D im have chance of very slow mode or all can be again work as it should. Its not deadly but annoying
    Im monithor this by GPU-Z and afterburner - and im not saw no any drops of clock of gpu or gpu loading. No any themeprature problem (all stay cool). No any problems with free memory or something. Im also chek in GPU-Z when game runing in - PICE mode is stay 16x 3.0 both in "normal" and "slow" mode.
    Not sure its just two "mode" - subjectivly, it can be "normal-fast as it should", "slowly then it should" and "slow as hell"
    one thing im remember - several months ago on this forum i requested and received new bios for my 280x (fixed high vcom temperature issue). Im not sure, but maybe this random performance start after this bios. MAybe it have new bios? Or any help how i can fix this problems. thanks.

    Gaming App - it's MSI's software. Unless your graphics card is more of "standard" rather than Gaming edition?
    If possible, try your card in different computer and see if there are loss of performance too.
    Also, contact Gigabyte asking for newest BIOS for your board.
    And make vBIOS request here for your GPU, providing Serial Number (you can dismiss last 3 characters) and copy of current vBIOS (use GPU-Z to make copy, upload it to some file hosting service and give a link here).
    Im tryed gaming apps and afterburner - not effect, of curse.
    My bios is up to date but my motherboard have a bug with random BSODs. This bsods very rare - about 1 in the week and absolutly random, so i cant show this problem in service center of shop for immidatly replacing.
    Im dont sure this perfromance problem from motherboard as BSOD too. But it possible.

  • SQL performance drops after 20 mins

    Hello,
    I am using Oracle Version 9.2.0.5
    I have an SQL query that starts off fast but the performance drops after running for 20 mins. It continues to drop till a point where it becomes painfully slow.

    Welcome to the forum!
    You would normally expect to feel warmth more so on back of device nearest to battery as current consumption of device rises and there is a rise in battery temperature when charging even if device on standby.

  • MacBook Pro late 2011 Battery Performance drop dramatically

    MacBook Pro late 2011 Battery Performance drop dramatically
    9 months 94 cycles and its health is now at 89%

    Does the system still run off the battery only? Does it run for a few hours off the battery only? Then No it is not defective and no Apple will do nothing for you and No Applecare does not cover Consumable items which the battery is one of those.
    The only time Apple MAY, and that is BIG MAY, replace the battery is within the first year and only if Apple Deems the battery to be defective. Fat chance of that as long as the system runs off the battery for any length of time.

    What I meant was that many hard drives come formatted for Windows and need to be reformatted for Apple machines, but you've certainly found the answer in your drive's speed.

  • Big performance drop migrating to Kodo 4.1 (Why would Kodo refuse to batch inserts in certain tables)

    Hello,
    While migrating from Kodo 3.4 to Kodo 4.1, I noticed significant drop in
    insert performance. I traced it down to some strange batching behavior.
    While most of the PCs were committed with batched inserts one particular
    class refused to batch and would insert row by row resulting in 10 times
    performance drop.
    There is nothing special about the class. Its hierarchy is mapped on base
    its table except for one of the lowest members which is mapped vertically.
    Thank you very much

    It sounds like kodo 3 was batching that rows and had no problem with it ?
    We only ship with the suggested oracle driver 10.2.0.1.0.
    50% of our customers use oracle, so it would be a pity if performance
    drops.
    Alex ... it sounds like you successfully migrated to kodo4.
    Could you give a short summery on how 'difficult' it was in the end ?
    From the docs it sounds very easy (except the sentence 'Many
    confniguration
    properties and defaults have changed.') but from the newsgroups it sounds
    as if
    you'd struggle a bit.
    I'm about to schedule our migration for the first quarter of 2007 and any
    hint
    helping use to estimate the time will help us.
    If you compare with migration from kodo 2 to 3 ... is it easier or worse ?

  • Any performance drop with a retina display?

    Hi!
    I'd love to buy a Macbook Pro 15" Retina Display but knowing that retina renders a very higher resolution, is there any performance drop in comparison with a normal Macbook Pro?
    I'm a developer and I wonder if a Retina display would be a good idea? Is it softer for the eyes?
    Thanks!

    I use my 4-month old, 2012 Retina Macbook Pro for music applications, presentations, and graphic design.
    This computer is leaps & bounds above the competition in performance and convenience.  I expect it to last me a very long time!
    On that note, keep in mind some of the new Oct. 2013 15" rMBP's do not have an NVIDIA Graphics Card.  In my opinion, having this component in the computer is crucial as a developer!
    If I were you, I'd shop for a refurbished 15" rMBP, as I did.  As I see it, I saved $500+ getting a brand new state-of-the-art computer in a different type of box.

    As the title says,  when i sync my dualshock 3 control via bluetooth to my sgp321, wifi performance drops from 50 mbps to 8 mbps or less....

    Could i have a sony expertise answering about this issue???
    Regards.

    Could it be that you have your WiFi and Bluetooth in same frequency band? Any chance you can try WiFi on the 802.11n band? or try changing channels of your WiFi router? I don't think you can change your Bluetooth. Frequencies... I believe WiFi on "n" operates at 5 ghz as opposed to bluetooth operating in 2.4 ghz band... that way less chance of interference

  • Does daisy chained firewires make performance drop?

    Hi all, just looking for a quick answer by someone who knows what they're talking about. Will daisy chaining firewire 400 drives together on a Mac or PC create a performance drop? I'm editing a project using 2 daisy chained drives at the moment with media on both. My co-worker claims it will slow down the computer's access to the media, I say it won't. Neither of us has any hard evidence and a quick google search doesn't turn up anything substantial either. What I'm looking for is hard engineering evidence. Thanks!

    The firewire protocol allows for 63 or so devices to be chained together.
    Running two FW400 devices should not be an issue. I've run up to a eight on chain in the past.
    Still, be aware that some drives do not play well with other drives on the same chain. I have a G-RAID 500GB drive that tanks when there is another drive connected. It runs fine when it is the only drive on the bus.
    If you are curious, go to the AJA website and find the "AJA System Test" app. It is a disk drive throughput test. Connect your drives in various configurations and see what happens.
    Good luck,
    x

  • HP TX2Z overheating with vista and windows7 the temperature rise till 93C and slower done my laptop

    When I bought my laptop it works good but my laptop is overheating or what ever.
    With doing noting the temperature rise to 83C. It makes my laptop useless.
    I thought it was a problem of windows & but I but a new windows 64 bit on it still the problem.
    How to solve this problem!!

    I don't think hp really cares (or nvidia, one of the two), otherwise they would have recalled the tx2000 series, since it had the same nvidia issue as the tx1000. they already sold the computers, and no longer sell them, plus most are out of warranty by now. and it's probably not economically feasible for hp to recall the rest of the tx series either, unfortunately.
    the CPU probably contributes to the problem since it runs pretty hot, and is meant for a 14-17" notebook. i think even some of those have the same problem though. one of my friends has a dv4, no clue if it still works, but it had the same/very similar AMD CPU and ATi IGP combo as the tx2500 and tx2z, and it clearly had some video issues.
    also by default, all computers today underclock their processors to save energy and run cooler while idle, and they go back to full speed when you're running any processor-intensive programs.

    Will I notice a significant performance drop if I run my Imac 8,1(early 2008) direct from an external firewire 800 Harddrive

    I notice quite a difference in two of my externals because of that (the 5400 rpm drive was a warranty replacement and I had no idea it wouldn't be 7200 rpm - but that's another subject.....).
