Unexpected quitting, etc.

If this is already a thread, then I could not find it and am sorry for any repeats.
My new Macbook is mostly wonderful, but I have a couple problems. My instant messaging program (at first I had AIM, now I use Adium) always ALWAYS "unexpectedly quits" when I'm using it. Firefox does also on occasion, as do a few other applications, both downloaded by me and pre-installed. Also, once in a while my camera won't work - it just shows a colored blank screen in photobooth. Restarting fixes this particular problem, but it is quite annoying.
My biggest complaint is the continual quitting of Adium (the instant messaging program). Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I have the Applecare protection plan - any thoughts on whether it would be worth going through all that? thanks.
macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I didn't see a resolution on this thread and I've posted a similar thread under "Safari".
My MacBook (bought in August 2006) unexpectedly quits Safari, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Mail, Preview.
At first, I thought it only quit Safari when I was trying to print. It would crash at the apple-P keystroke, before it even looked for a printer (I was actually trying to print to a pdf in fact), but then when I tried to copy a web page into Word, it crashed too. The other programs have just randomly quit - I can't find a pattern.
Upon recommendation from the Apple Store, I deleted preferences. Still have unexpected quits. Then they recommended an archive and install - tried that but it still quits unexpectedly.
May be sending this MacBook back or back to the Apple Store.

  • Unexpectedly quit message on mail, safari, dashboard, etc

Yesterday morning I worked on Mail, Safari and Quicken for Mac and all was working well - I was even able to backup my Quicken on Mobile Me. This morning I tried to get on my Mail, Safari, even Software Update (anything that has to connect to the web) and I get the "unexpectedly quit" message. I downloaded the latest updates a few days ago: Airport Extreme update 2008-004 vs 1.0; Digital Camera Raw Compatibility update vs 2.3; iPhoto update vs. 7.1.5; and Migration and DVD/CD sharing update vs. 1.2. I downloaded the OS 10.5.5 a while ago and haven't had any problems.
I'm assuming there was a problem with the updates?
Please help!! This is why I left the Microsoft world!!

  • Indesign 2.0.2 unexpectedly quits despite deleting user prefs, etc . . .

I have been using Indesign 2.0.2 on a PowerMac G5 running Mac OSX 10.4.11 for years with no problems and all of a sudden today when I tried to open Indesign 2.0.2, it starts to open and then the " . . . quit unexpectedly . . ." message pops up.  I read through the other posts in this forum that were similar and followed the instructions in both but to no avail.  Here is what I have tried so far:  I tried holding down the Shift+Control+Option+Command keys and then opening Indesign 2.0.2 and the same unexpectedly quit thing happened.  I deleted the user preferences, but that did not fix the problem either.  I created a new user account in OSX, but was not able to open Indesign 2.0.2 in the new user either, the same thing happened as in my regular user account.  I also downloaded and installed the id202_quitfix_all.hqx and followed those instructions, but this did not work.  I even uninstalled Indesign 2.0.2 and then reinstalled Indesign 2.0.1 from the original installer CD and then updated to 2.0.2, but the same unexpectedly quit thing happened upon opening the software.  If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this problem, please let me know.  Thanks.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it.
I did set up a new user account and tried to open Indesign, but the same unexpectedly quit thing happened. In response to your suggestion that it may be a bad font, I also opened Font Book and ran the Validate Fonts on All Fonts and three fonts which we never use came up as having serious problems. So from within Font Book, these fonts were removed. I then emptied the Trash and re-booted, but Indesign still would not open without unexpectedly quitting. Throughout this process, I have been opening Indesign by double-clicking on the application in the Applications Folder.
The last Software Update we did was on 24 Sept 2009 which installed:
Security Update 2009-005 (Power PC) Version 1.0
    iTunes
    QuickTime
    Aperture Update
Indesign 2.0.2 has been working fine since the last Software Update until yesterday morning.

  • Crashing / Unexpectedly quitting when attaching files etc.

    Hi
I have this query posted in a couple of different places but some developments in my own investigation have led me to post it again.
Initially, I noticed I could no longer attach files in yahoo mail. Until tuesday this week, I have always been able to. Then I realised I couldn't attach them to skype of send them through yahoo messenger. When trying to attch files, the 'browse' page comes up, I select the file, the computer thinks for a moment then kicks me out of the software - 'safari unexpectedly quit'
Then I noticed spotlight has stopped working.
Through advice from posting bits of this in various places, I have run repair disc, disc permission, printed off log on console, tried to start spotlight again by using a command in terminal.
Nothing has made the slightest bit of difference.
However, I've just been fiddling with folders in finder - if i go to view and then 'arrange icons as columns' (incidentally, how the browse thing organises them when attching files) and then if I try to open a file, the computer can't cope - console tells me 'Finder crashed'
mds apparently crashes every few minutes and that is also what it says when safari quits.
I updated software last week - I keep up to date so it was only itunes and 2 'powerPC (???)' things but ever since then, it hasn't worked.
The only other thing I've done recently is to have contacted Netgear to reset my router and setup new WEP key for my wireless connection as I had lost the password but I can't see that that would have made any difference.
Please help someone - I'm getting desperate as I rely on being able to attch files as part of my job.
I frequently get this error code:
Can't checkin with server named com.apple.metadata.mdserver, error 0xfffffecc
Someone must know what to do????
For further info on what I've done so far, please see

    Thanks

    Hello again, Jim: )
I updated software last week - I keep up to date so it was only itunes and 2 'powerPC (???)' things but ever since then, it hasn't worked.
Next time to find out exactly what you installed System preferences->Sotware Update Installed Software ->Show as Log button on the bottom.
To find out why Safari is crashing posting the latest & entire safari crash log is a great troubleshooting tool which we never did get to because the
metadata was crashing as well & now so was the finder I read. So something was askew with the os software, missing files not proper installation of the os. Third party software incompatibly.
A myriad of things could of gone wrong hard to know, I understand you wanting to know, it would be a good way to avoid this from happening again.
Can't checkin with server named com.apple.metadata.mdserver, error 0xfffffecc. Someone must know what to do????

As I linked you to before, this is the only hit I get when searching this issue, so it is not a common problem it seems. Which is why I recommended another forum sorry if the road was not smooth, still you did get some help
& direction from us all, which is what we aim for.
I hope the A & I has sorted it all out, you can do your work. If you have any other issues, let us know. Best of luck.

  • I-photo in ilife 08 unexpectedly quits -  os 10.4.10 does not quit

Running iphoto in ilife '08 on i-mac G-5, OS 10.4.10,Have created numberous book
    Background:
I have successfully assembled 4 books, simple, 20 page iphoto 08 books and saved to iphoto then to iweb.
Yet when assembling a ibook at page 35, I went into creative mode,
double clicked on image, made adjustments and the computer went into a 1 hour loop. I finally cut off computer. I can turn on computer, load iphoto, appears to work, when attempting to open the book the application "unexpectedly quits"
I cannot get the 35 page book to open,I have uploaded the software updates, reinstalled i-life 08, to the extent you can with the disk.
    QUESTION...
While waiting for apple developers to figure out the patch, how can I take the 480 images from iphoto 08 copy to a flash drive and assemble a book on one of my other computers running the stable iphoto 06.
Or is there a fix for Iphoto 08?
    Thanks

    Bob:
There are a couple of possible fixes here.
1 - do you have any text fields that are unused? If so just put a space in it and try again.
2 - others have reported it was the editing of the file while in the book mode that would cause the crashing. Their solution was to do the editing in the main Library and not while in the book mode. You may have to remove that photo from the book, edit it and then add back.
See if either of those will help.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto won't open!  It keeps unexpectedly quitting!!

When I click on iPhoto to open it, the icon starts bouncing, and then three seconds into it, it just stops. "iPhoto has unexpectedly quit" is all it keeps saying. I have tried everything from restarting it, to opening it from the Applications folder. Nothing seems to be working. How do I get back into iPhoto? Help :P

    Julia,
I would use the new library and import the images from the old library into the new. there is nothing wrong with the iPhoto.app, so no need to reinstall it.
    Follow these steps:
Drag the old library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto with the newly created library.
    Go to File/add to library.
In the next window, navigate to the library on the desktop and choose it.
Wait till iPhoto imports all your images.
You will have to redo albums, keywords, slideshows, etc, but you will now have all your images so it is a good thing!
Read page 2 and you will know what to expect and see when the import is done.
    iPhoto Help
    iPhoto Help 2
I would then backup that new library as soon as you import the images.
After you do your organization with keywords, albums, etc, backup the iPhoto Library again.
    Good luck!

  • The iChat Agent process has unexpectedly quit, disconnecting you from all..

My iChat has been doing this all the time! I can't stay connected for more than an hour without iChat quitting on me and giving me this message:
*"Disconnected from iChat Agent. The iChat Agent process has unexpectedly quit, disconnecting you from all services. Logging in again will restart it."*
I have tried these steps to fix the problem with no success.
    Step 1 - Repaired Permissions
Step 2 - Rebooted off of the DVD or CD and Repaired Disk
Step 3 - Went to /Users/user_name/Library/Preferences folder and deleted these files:
    com.apple.iChat.plist
    com.apple.iChat.Aim.plist
    com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist
    com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist
    com.apple.iChatAgent.plist
    Step 4 - Reinstalled the **** thing.
My iChat works 100%, I have no issues connecting, video conferencing, screen sharing and etc. But every hour or so the connection drops and gives me that **** message!!! *"Disconnected from iChat Agent. The iChat Agent process has unexpectedly quit, disconnecting you from all services. Logging in again will restart it."* So have to keep reconnecting all the time! Sometimes I'm in a middle of a conference and the freackn' thing just drops!!!! (Even tho sometimes I do get that error but my video connection still works offline.... not sure how....)
I have been in several forums and no one was able to fix this issue! Can some official Apple guy help with this!!! I mean, ****!! What an annoying bug!! I really on iChat to communicate with co-workers and etc as I work remotely. If Adium had video support I wouldn't even wast my time to get this thing working, but iChat is still my best option(when the **** thing works)
Please any help is greatly appreciated.
And no its not my router and ISP and this happens with any connection(Coffee shops, public libraries, WiFi Hot Spots....)

I had the same problem a month or two ago. I spent a few hours on the phone with an Apple tech and after the fourth time calling back was transferred to a Product Specialist (the highest level of Apple technicians). The specialist recommended creating a test account on my Mac and trying to launch iChat to see if the problem was system-wide or a user based issue. When that didn't work I was out of options. What it unfortunately came down to was having to do an Archive and Install (which didn't work) and after hours of backing up did an Erase and Install. After all the smoke cleared and my computer was back to normal, iChat was back and fully functional as before.
IF YOU ARE USING TIME MACHINE:
*DO NOT* copy all of your files back onto your Mac. Only copy your documents and music, preferences and nothing else. Chances are you backed up the problem without even knowing it and you would just end up back where you started.
I did notice that my .Mac account still works in iChat but AIM does not (which just happens to be what I use to communicate with the rest of the world).
    Good Luck!

  • Spinning Wheel, Mail Unexpectedly Quits

I am using Mail 1.3.11 and have been for years. Just in the last week, Mail will unexpectedly quit and ask me if I want to send bug report. I can usually open one mail, then get spinning colorwheel for over a minute then get the App Mail has quit window. This happens everytime I open Mail now. I can't really check or delete any mails. I read advice on holding down shift and checking junk filter. Did all that and still quits on me. I called tech support for my internet provider and they claim it is not on their end. The spinning wheel seems to start when mail is trying to contact smtp.mail.west.cox server.
I am stumped. Is there a newer version of Mail? Should I upgrade and will it fix this problem? Like I mentioned, I have used this version for years and no problems until recent.

Thanks David for the help. The place I got the log from was in the window after Mail crashed again. When I went to Open Library/Logs/etc. the file mail.crash.log was greyed out. Anyway, here it is.

  • Skype and pages applications unexpectedly quit

I am running on OSX version 10.9.4?
I have the latest software updates, including quicktime, java, adobe, EVERYTHING etc!
For some reason my Skype and also my Pages applications are" unexpectedly quitting" This has been happening for a few days now. Initially i thought my skype was the problem So I had a look here and did all these steps
    https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA10916/why-does-skype-for-mac-os-x-crash-my-co mputer
I have done all of those things several times! Yet nothing... So clearly it isn't the application though if it's also happening with Pages.
I have ran through my disk utility and tried to repair disks and files
My memory and my Ram should all be fine, says there is plenty.
Here is some information from my console that may be able to help you?

  • Can't get remote cluster machine to encode video - getting 'Media Server application unexpectedly quit'

    Hi
Using Compressor 4 / Apple QuarterMaster admin etc, I have set up a Cluster and it works well to Share > Export Using Compressor Settings.  That took some doing, and I'm happy that it works.
If I do all my processing in the foreground, or alternatively in the background on my FCPX computer, ie without running or using any cluster in the background, it all goes well.  Quick, error free.
If I activate the cluster and only put my local machine's compressor services into it, and then send my compressor batch to the cluster, it works perfectly well.  But that defeats the point of having a cluster.  I want the remote machine to do all the work so my local machine doesn't slow down.
Unfortunately, if I add the remote machine's services into the cluster, the encoding always fails with 'Media Server application unexpectedly quit' in the error log.  I know that the cluster is distributing segments of the file to the remote machine - this can be seen in the Share Monitor, but they never get processed and sit there waiting until I get the error message.
The remote machine is a modern 4G core 2 duo MacBook. It's never been used for this before.  It has Compressor 4 and the Pro Apps Update installed and both appear to work.  Both machines are running 10.6.8.  The remote machine has Compressor services initialised in Apple QMaster sharing.  The QMasterAdmin sees these services.  They are accessible over Bonjour and appear in the Cluster.  Compressor services from both the local and the remote machine are configured exactly the same way.  The same QT codecs exist on both machines.  I've restarted, shift-restarted, etc etc.
So I am at a loss here.  The remote machine just won't compress anything it is sent.
Any ideas?  Must both have FCPX installed?
Anyone actually got a remote machine in a cluster to work with Compressor 4?  I can't figure it out.
    Chris.

    OK... finally sorted it out.
It's a bug, as far as I can tell.
Any job entered directly into Compressor 4 in the normal Compressor manner will be successfully rendered by any working cluster from any machine that can access the cluster.  That's good.  It means that the underlying distributed processing model works well.
HOWEVER - any job forwarded to a Compressor 4 cluster that includes non-local compressor services (ie compressor services not resident on the same machine), using Share > Export Using Compressor Settings direct from FCPX will fail.
To confirm this bug, I made a cluster on a remote machine.  It was a dual core machine, so I enabled 2 compressor services on that machine, and that's all the cluster was.  Simple.
I then manually entered a video file (ProRess 422 720p) into Compressor on the remote machine.  I did this by physically setting up new job using the compressor user interface.  A bog standard ProRes422 720p file rendered fine this way on the remote machine.  As did anything else I gave it.  Good.
Then on my main machine, I opened Compressor and made a job based on the same file and settings, and sent it to the remote machine's cluster.  No problem at all!  Great!
So now I know that both Compressor versions, and the clustering model, are working fine.  In fact I can send all sorts of files to the cluster, from any other version of compressor, and have them processed on the remote machine, and get the result back on my desktop later on.  Excellent.
But, if I try put this same file into a FMPX timeline, and go Share > Export Using Compressor Settings.... and select a cluster with remote (non-local) compressor services, it does not work.  Rendering the video segments on the remote machine times out and fails, every time.  It doesn't matter what file format I use, it just fails.
    So it's a bug.
From what I can tell, Final Cut Pro X somehow messes up the Share > Export Using Compressor settings where the cluster includes non-local compressor services, causing all jobs to fail.  The same Share > Export Using Compressor Settings will work quite happily if all the services on the cluster are on the same machine as FCPX, or if the job is sent to This Computer in the background.  But any attempt to send files to a cluster using any remote services will fail.
I hope this saves some people from wasting as much time as I have!
One workaround is to export to ProRes then put this file manually into Compressor, sending the job to the remote cluster.  This is a two step process with a large intermediary ProRes file.  If one goes Export as QuickTime movie, generating the intermediary file prevents further FCPX work being done.
To get the intermediary in the background one could use  Share > Export Using Compressor Settings via either This Computer, or to a cluster using only local services.  Then once complete, manually add it to a compressor job.
So this is a FCPX bug as far as I can tell.

DVD SP2 usually opens with a screen asking to create a new project, open existing, etc. that isn't happening anymore. it opens with the log and assets windows. i manually open the menu editor. import an asset. sometimes i can try to bring it into the menu editor and i get no choice buttons. most of the time when i import an asset it shuts down and says dvd sp2 has unexpectedly quit. it worked fine before quicktime 7.0.4. i have dvd sp2.0.5, quicktime 7.0.4. i have reinstalled sp2, repaired permissions, trashed plist, trashed quicktime receipts and redownloaded and reinstalled quicktime 7.0.4. nothing changes. another curious thing is i can't open preferences in the toolbar of sp2.
    please help! i am desparate.
    thanks,
    jon

I'm not sure this is applicable to DVDSP 2, but it's worth a try:

If that doesn't work, you may be looking at a reinstall of DVDSP and/or your OS.

  • Updated InDesign CS6 and not unexpectedly quits and won't open

Hi, I just updated indesign cs6 (for mac) this morning and now it won't open and just crashes with the "InDesign has unexpectedly quit" window. PhotoShop, Ilustrator and Dreamweaver all seem to be opening and working fine but it's InDesign I need! Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Dara

Sorry I haven't replied earlier. I re-downloaded the original version InDesign from the my adobe user site and installed it again, I also used Onyx to clear all permission, preferences etc and restarted which got it working again. I'm in the middle of doing a massive project that has very tight deadlines so I don't think I'll try updating again until it's finished. Adobe CS6 in general doesn't seem to be updating properly at all, either through the app store on mountain lion or through the adobe updater system. Is this a common problem do you know? Again, apologies for the lateness of my reply and thank you, Dara

There is something up with the quicktime software not communicating with the Firewire device. Quicktime 7.2 unexpectedly quits after I try to either: make a new recording, or goto preferences/recording

What QT Pro Player is active? Have noted on my system that Player v7.03 sometimes opens for unknown reasons (which is no longer even installed on my "start-up" drive). This QT Pro Player is not compatible with the QT 7.2 "structure" and will crash when attempting to record audio, video, open the "Movie Info" (now "Inspector") window, etc. Appears calls to "structure" routines are different causing unpredictable "crashes." May or may not be the problem in your case. (For me, the work around is to open QT Pro Player manually to ensure the correct player, 7.2, is active.)

  • Importing Tiffs - FCP unexpectedly quits

I have been importing tiffs at 100 dpi and 1000 pixels (either landscape or portrait depending on orientation). Every time I load into the Viewer, FCP either unexpectedly quits or I get the gray screen of death.
I have tried different formats (png, jpeg). I have tried different sizes (40 dpi, 72 dpi). They are definitely RGB because they are screen caps. We just installed more RAM, going from 1.5 Gig to 2.5 Gig. The only thing that works is 72 dpi and fitting to screen (either 720 wide or 540 high).
What could the cause of this be? Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need more RAM?

I don't care what your IT people think as ALL the general computing IT people I've ever dealt with (and I have dealt with A LOT) don't have the imagination to really understand what is going on in a graphics driven computing environment.
    sooooo,
TAKE OUT THE RAM and try again. If it still crashes the IT guys might be right, if it works, you can lord it over them until the the cowboys win the superbowl again .... (which will be a very, very long time!)
    keep at it!

edit: I really am this grumpy but I will explain: when you use images, you are likely pushing into realms of your new ram that other applications do not require and therefor will not access. This is the simplistic explanation of why FCP may crash while other progams seem to run unaffected. Launch Activity Monitor and examine how much ram is being used, how many page swaps are taking place, etc to get a feel for the relative demands of each application.
IT people often do not understand Photoshop, FCP, AE etc system requirements. They really have no clue as to the demanding nature of image manipulation and the amount of RAM necessary to serve the application(s). Do you have more than one open at the same time?
