Unexpected Shutdowns since 10.4.9 Upgrade

Hello All. Quick question (hopefully)...
Upgraded a few weeks ago to 10.4.9 and now (only when using battery power) the computer shuts down unexpectedly when the battery has about 40 minutes remaining...no warning, just stops. When I plug it in, it starts back up. The calendar resets to a 1969 date..but that is the only change.
Any ideas.
Also, seems that my keyboard is now french so some of my keys are wrong...no question mark, exclamation point, etc. Any ideas...
Thanks

Yes it is a USB modem and so you're probably right... When I upgraded to 10.4 in the first place the modem went haywire until Speedtouch produced a driver that was appropriate. I just didn't think it would make too much difference going from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9, but I guess you can never tell.
As far as I knew there was no way of checking and other upgrades within 10.4 haven't made any difference.
Thanks for the help...
David

  • Has anyone else experienced persistent "iPhoto unexpectedly quit" since last weeks upgrade to Lion 10.7.3?

I am getting persistent "iPhoto unexpectedly quit" since last weeks upgrade to Lion 10.7.3?
It is usually preceded by a warning that the library is corrupted and needs to be repaired. I can still see the supposedly bad photos in Aperture without problems. I believe there is a serios bug in iPhoto.
One other clue here is that I attempted to download a new slideshow to my MobileMe Gallery immediately after the upgrade but even though it is still a valid Share option it did not work. After that with a brief exception I got the unexpected quits referrred to above.

Have you previously marked Commodo's certificates as untrusted?  The following discussion
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17473383#17473383
talked about a similar problem and I just enabled Commodo's root certificate in Keychain Access and now mobileme is working for me again with Aperture.

  • Windows often undergoes unexpected shutdown during work!!

I was using windows xp for 2 years with just 1GB RAM and i upgraded it to  windows 7. Since then i am not able to work consistently since my windows is shutting down half way at random. Then i upgraded my RAM to one more GigaBytes. Still my problem
exist. ALso i am not sure whether it is because of absence of ups since the time i upgraded. I also tried for so many solutions yet nothing worked with my pc..

    Hi!
Unexpected shutdowns can be linked many different things, are you doing something specific at the time, for example using applications that require a lot of CPU or RAM?
In most cases it's linked to the CPU becoming to hot or a faulty RAM module.
Open up the event viewer and browse to "System"
Are there any errors at the time of the computer rebooting?
    Best regards

  • Programs Unexpectedly Shutdown

I have had my macbook for about one year. Since using it I have noticed that some programs will unexpectedly shutdown while I am using them. For instance, when I am in Word or playing Zoo Tycoon the program will suddenly close and a message will appear that says: "Word/Zoo Tycoon has unexpectedly shutdown." It then asks if I would like to Report or Restart.
I thought both issues might have to do with the age of the programs, that perhaps they were not completely compatible with the newer macbook operating system. I decided to purchase iWork 06 hoping that using the latest Apple word processing software would alleviate my word processing anxieties (and as for Zoo Tycoon, I simply lost interest and stopped playing). After installing iWork I did have some (possibly unrelated) trouble with frequent kernal panics, but I contacted technical support and have not had trouble since.
Anyways, yesterday I was using iPhoto quite extensively when it shutdown unexpectedly. That makes three programs in total that have done this. I did a quick internet search for unexpected shutdowns in macbooks but most of them seem to be more serious, referring to the entire computer shutting down, which is not the case for me.
I'm beginning to think that it has something to do with how long I am in the programs - that maybe the computer gets overheated and therefore shuts the programs down. Usually if the program shuts down once it doesn't happen again that day so it's not like this is completely unbearable, it's just kind of annoying and doesn't seem normal.
Obviously I'm not very computer savvy. I mainly use my laptop for school so I can deal with these unexpected program shutdowns (as I have been since I got it) but since my warranty is expiring soon I thought it couldn't hurt to ask, just in case there is something more serious going on.
So finally (and sorry it has taken me so long) my question is:
Is it normal for programs to unexpectedly shutdown when you are in them for too long?
And if not, how serious of an issue it is? Should I look into getting my laptop replaced?

Replacing your MacBook won't fix this. It is a software issue. It is annoying but I always report what i was doing when it shut down. That may help the programmers fix the reasons for this. NeoOffice usually does this when I am closing it. I have found if I close the document before I shut down it doesn't happen. No rhyme or reason on the others it just happens.

  • Please help for my unexpected shutdown W510!!!

Since I used my W510 ( 43192NU with Windows 7 32bit ) from April 2010, I did experienced with unexpected shutdown. First, I thought it was my improperly use. But now, it shutdown unexpectedly even 3 times a week. Did anyone got the same experienced? Please help me...

I have the same exact problem!!!
    And it drives me crazy.
It happens only when my battery is charging (that is, it's not at 100%).
If the battery is fully charged, and I'm on AC power as well, all works o.k., but as soon as the battery is low (say 50%) and I plug it in, and put some load on the system (using VMware a lot) it runs for a while then dies instantaneously. No gradual shut-down - just shuts off.
It just happened again a few minutes ago, and I lost an important VMware file.
I called Lenovo support a few months ago, and they wanted me to send the laptop in for a week to make sure there is really a problem.
Any other input/comments would be appreciated.
BTW, I purchased the W510 in February 2010.

    nuoyapapa,
if the bug exists in Apple’s code, then there’s nothing that can be done about it but to wait for an update from Apple. Given the loaded kernel extensions shown in the crash report, the only things which you could affect are VirtualBox and FUSE for OS X. Since you have the latest version of VirtualBox installed, and I haven’t seen similar GPU panics reported involving that version of VirtualBox, that led me to suggest experimenting with FUSE for OS X first. Since it’s a GPU panic, you could try disabling VirtualBox if you think that it’s more likely to be the cause than FUSE for OS X.

  • Thinkpad x1 carbon unexpected shutdown and freezing during manual shutdown

Ever since i got my x1 carbon i've been experiencing constant unexpected shutdown issues. Ill leave my laptop on for a few minutes unused and when i come back it'll be turned off and when started back up it will prompt me that the computer has recovered from a unexpected shutdown. There are also numerous of times where i would attempt to put my laptop to sleep or shut it down manually and the screen will go black, however the laptop doesnt shutdown or goes into sleep mode, but instead freezes with a black screen. I've sent in my x1 carbon in once due to a harddrive failure where the computer wont even start up windows at all, the technician informed me that they put a new ssd in and ever since i got it back these issues still occur. Can some one please help me here? these occurance are getting more frequent and i'm afraid i might have to send in my laptop again due to harddrive failure.

    Hi, kuelderrek
Could you possibly go into Event Viewer and look at the Windows Logs, and then take a screenshot of these logs and post them here? I'd also recommend making sure all the drivers for your system are up to date, just to make sure they are not causing any issues. You can find all the drivers for your system here.
    Best,
    Adam

  • SBS 2011 VM regular unexpected shutdowns, unable to find cause.

    Hi,
I have an SBS 2011 virtual machine running on ESXi 5.5 / HP DL380 G7. This particular VM is reporting unexpected shutdowns at regular intervals, at first it happened once or twice every few months but in the last few weeks it has started happening every
    2 days between 1am and 2am.
There are other VM's on this server that are not effected.
The event logs don't report anything suspicious until after the unexpected shutdown when I get the unexpected shutdown errors.
Steps I have taken so far to isolate the issue are as follows.
    1. update the firmware on the HP server.
    2. update ESXi from 5.1 to 5.5
Unfortunately these steps have made no difference. Any idea on what might be causing the SBS 2011 VM and not the others to have this problem? It runs a rather large exchange database and all these unexpected shutdowns are a cause for concern.
    Regards,
    PM

    Thanks for the suggestions,
AV updates take place between 7pm and 11pm at hourly intervals (previously hourly all day)
We use Shadowprotect for our backups and an incremental backup it taken on an hourly basis between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, a full backup takes place on a Saturday afternoon.
I've gone through the system logs and tried to compare what's happening at the time of the crash on the days it did/didn't happen and have noted the differences below.
Between 1:00am and 1:30am on a day the server didn't crash there are GroupPolicy Event ID 1500's in the System logs and not much else.
on the days ( this morning ) it did crash there are those same 1500's as well as some Service Control Manager Event ID 7036's in the System logs immediately after a group policy update of 7 objects. The 7036's are as follows.
30/03/2015 1:05:05 AM Service Control Manager
7036  The Portable Device Enumerator Service service entered the running state.
30/03/2015 1:05:06 AM Service Control Manager
7036  The Windows Defender service entered the running state.
30/03/2015 1:05:07 AM Service Control Manager
7036  The Windows Defender service entered the stopped state.
30/03/2015 1:07:05 AM Service Control Manager
7036  The Portable Device Enumerator Service service entered the stopped state.
There are then some more 1500's until 1:25am then at 1:28am I get Event ID 12 The operating system started at system time ‎2015‎-‎03‎-‎29T14:58:12.109999300Z
The application logs seem more promising, see the screenshots below. First where the server didn't crash and second where it did. (crash was at ~1:26am)

I have since removed the certificate 805XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I have not yet removed certificate 114XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
as I get the following error in EMS
The internal transport certificate cannot be removed because that would cause the Microsoft Exchange Transport service

I have not yet followed up on this, and I'm unsure if it's related.
There is no unusual performance issues or memory use, there is 76.6GB free on this VM.

  • Protecting NTFS against unexpected shutdowns

Hello. I work for a company that has more than 300 retail stores through my country. Those stores have a local Windows 2008 server running SQL Server 2008 for some local processing. All servers are Dell R220 and R210 II.
Problem is that some of those places have unreliable power supply. Even with UPS sometimes servers turn off and file system is corrupted. Last week we had a case of an unexpected shutdown which corrupted the registry files. Its rare but it happens and when
it happens the store can't function properly.
We've solved this problem on the Linux PoS by using the "data=journal" parameter for the file system. This parameter makes the file system to commit all data and metadata into the journal before writing into the main file system. I'm not a file
system engineer but we've tested and the PoS file systems seems pretty much immune to corruption caused by unexpected shutdown. It makes the system a bit slow but we don't care.
Is there something like that for NTFS? I've searched about it and read some documentation online but it seems to be no way to tune NTFS to become more resistant against corruption.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
Yes, as it keep the write buffer in the memory for a period of time, like 72H. When the server restart it finish the write buffer :) Less risk to corrupt that way (so yes it's OS independant, but always depend on the ondoard controller)
For the brand I seen that in HP mostly, for the Dell it depend what the system builder configured the system with. It's usually a clip module that you can plug into the motherboard to make the upgrade. It's a memory kit usually, that you can plug a battery
    on it.
Look like that ;  we can see the memory upgrade kit with the battery that directly plug into the motherboard :)

Just read that the default memory storage on FF is set to 5 mbs. You can up that by clicking on tools, advanced and overriding the default and set it to 50 mbs (if you use lots of tabs) or 10 mbs (if you use just a few).
I open a blank tab and clear the cache periodically, while I am working. I can have several tabs open and watch videos on Youtube, by doing this. Have you cleared your cache?
Since I have an older computer, I've also used CCleaner for years. I use it often, but always before signing off. You can get it free...search for CCleaner, download from Pirifoam free. I didn't change any of the settings and it clears crap left behind from uninstalling programs, clears all browsers at once of: cookies, history, passwords, etc. I love it!
I had freezing, before using the "open blank tab, clear the cache" thing. Now I have no problems. Plus, as I said...you can change the default memory usage for FF and that should help too.
Hope this helps! Good luck! :)

  • HT1199 I-pod no longer reconised by computer since downloaging the latest upgrade from i-tunes?

Ipod no longer reconised by computer since downloading the lastest upgrade from i tunes.

    Same here.
I have tried all the repeated reccomendations I've found in other posts.
    Nothing has worked.
I have tried installing older versions of ITunes also...will not recognize my library so it will not start up.  Have tried rebuilding it.  Not working....
One thing that did work was resetting my Ipod nano...now all I have is the message "Please use Itunes to sync music to this Ipod." :/

  • Xperia T- Bluetooth Issues since Andriod 4.3 Upgrade.

    Hello All.
Since my phone was upgraded to Andriod 4.3 Jelly bean, I've been unable to make calls from my phone via my BMW car audio as before, as the Bluetooth link keeps dropping out.
I've tried re- pairing the phone to my car, but this has made no difference.
The Bluetooth seems to work ok with other devices.
    Questions are:
    1) Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it.
    2) If not, is it possible to re- install the previous version of Bluetooth that came with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and worked perfectly ok with the car audio.
    3) As a last resort, is it possible to install a 3rd party Bluetooth App to try and resolve the problem.
Hope somebody out there can help !

I Have an Xperia Z and once again since the update battery drains superquick, the phone gets hot and the bluetooth is all but useless, I work for a motor dealer, since this update I cannot pair my phone to most of our vehicles to demonstrate the system (and yes it did pair fine to these cars and vans prior to update), I get the message Bluetooth share has stopped or it will re-boot the entire phone, I did have a conversation with Sony who deemed that I should back up and restore the handset, which once done may or may not work (it didn't) and they seem to be completely denying a problem, which as I have checked various forums there very clearly is a major issue
