Unexplainable pixilating of the screen HELP

We've had an iMac since 2008/2009 and yesterday the screen started to pixelate. We've got no explanation for why. My mum used it about an hour before it happened and it was running as normal, an hour later my brother went to use it and the screen was pixelated. The pixelation happens in random areas across the screen and makes the iMac impossible to use.
We turned it off using the power buttom and unplugged it - it was left like this over night. We've plugged it back in today and now all we're getting is a pixelated blue screen. It's not even loading the screen that allows us to log in.
It hasn't been bumped or anything like that. It's definitely well used and I know it's getting older - any ideas of what's wrong and what we can do to fix it (or any idea of what it'll cost to fix if we take it in to apple)?
Just to add - we've got no idea what operating system it's on. (Its whatever it was on when we bought it). My dad's forgotten and I was too young to care when we first got it!

The graphics card may need replacing.
I'd suggest running the Apple Hardware Test but that requires knowing which OS X iinstalled > Using Apple Hardware Test
Take your Mac in for service > Apple - Find Locations
You could try a PRAM reset > Resetting the PRAM

My E-Mail is going off the screen, Help!

Very recently my e-mail both mine outgoing and my incoming mail have gone off the screen and I cannot read.

Didn't you change the display?
You can drag the mail window in a way you can reach
the bottom right. Them you can recise.
You can also click on the green (top left).
The green at the top left was what cured my problem. So very basic and yet I never had paid any attention to it. Thanks so much. I do know about shrinking the window size, but the other problems was pushing me over the edge.

Computer is just over a year old and this is the first problem i have ever had, Nothing has changed in the power saver settings, and its getting frustrating everytime i go to use it i need to power it on and it always seems that it takes awhile before it finnaly realizes to turn on when pushing the button.

So apparntly it is not turning off, however the screen is just not coming back on once i open the lid. so i push the power button, it shuts down then i press it again and it restarts. software or hardware error?

Moving from a 17" PowerBook to the 13" MBA, my Finder windows are too big. If I could only change my default window size from the 17" to the 13" I could Command-A Command-C Command-V the contents of my larger old windows to the smaller new screen...or a global resize of the windows would be even better. That won't work when it is too big and off the screen.
You have to click OPTION and the GREEN button to be able to resize it when it's off the screen.

HT1338 My installation of Mountain Lion is stuck on "paused" at the bottom of the screen, HELP!!!

I started to install Mountain Lion onto my iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I now have a “ghost" picture of a mountain lion at the bottom of the screen. When I hover my mouse over it, it tells me that it is paused. Whether it will pounce or not I don't know, but it seems to have paused for hours. I can't find a way of making it move. Is it stalking me silently? Will it wake up and growl loudly when I'm asleep? I think we should be told.

Simply restore from the latest backup you made to iCloud or iTunes, prior to the damage incident. You were backing up to iTunes regularly, or at least using iCloud to backup wireless & automatically... right?
If you cannot make a backup of the damaged device at this point, and you do not have a backup of the data on the device, then you cannot access the data on the device, and it is lost. What would you have done if instead of simply being damaged, it had been lost or stolen?
This is a harsh lesson. Now you know why it is recommended to backup regularly. Learn from your mistake, and don't repeat it.

I need all of the symptoms of a worn out battery--besides the obvious icon at the top of the screen. help!

the issue i'm having is that nearly everytime i plug in my charger to my macbook pro, it doesn't register that its charging until i take out the battery and let it start up, at which point i replace my battery back into the computer.
this is only an issue with the charger on MY computer--works fine on my dads, brothers, etc. although i'm fairly certain that it IS, in fact, a battery issue, i would like to know for sure. i don't wanna drop $100+ on a battery if its not totally necessary.
i would like everyone with any type of issue with their battery to list the symptoms here. thanks!

derick: You are conducting a sort of poll, which is prohibited by the Terms of Use for these forums. A list of 500 reasons why others are unhappy with their batteries — which is what your post will elicit — is going to be absolutely useless to you and everyone else: a supreme waste of time.
Make a Genius Bar appointment to have your MBP, your charger and your battery tested. That way you'll get the answer you need instead of a catalog of unrelated complaints — some of them justified, the overwhelming majority just uninformed and silly.
