Unexplained 100's GB's of data on Hard Drive (can't find)

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction with this.
Today my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) ran out of hard disk space. I managed to recover well over 100 GB of space, as the way I had my Garageband files saved was taking up a silly amount of space, (just learning how to use the app and as such my files were huge).

Processor 3.5 Ghz Intel Core i5
Memory 8GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB
However, I still have about 440-500GB of missing/unaccounted for files that I simply can't find depending on the software I use to look at my used storage.
After googling the problem today, I downloaded both OmniDiskSweeper and Disk Inventory X to see if I could trace the issue.

The issue is definitely centred around these "other" files that I can't trace. My movies, music and pictures file sizes "feel" about right, as I have all my family photos and home movies on the mac along with all my CD's that I have imported.
So according to Omni Disk Sweeper I have used up 929GB of space, leaving only 185GB of free space, but when I look at my home directory using this program, I have used 456.5GB of space, quite a big difference (472.5GB difference).
About This Mac says I have used up 925GB (largely accounted for in these "other" files at 500GB) leaving only 185Gb of space free.
Disk Directory X says I have used up 865GB of space leaving only 173GB of free space, but the home directory again shows I have used a lot less than this at 425GB (440GB difference).
So what ever way you cut it, I seem to have hundred of GB's of data on my Mac that are not in my home directory. How do I trace them to get rid of them or a least work out what they are should I need to keep them?
Any help on what I should try next would be greatly appreciated, as I am past my ability to look further.

Where it really messed up was the time I turned on the computer and started iTunes without turning on the LaCie. When I discovered what I'd done, I quit iTunes, powered up the LaCie, then after a few minutes, opened iTunes and checked that it was still the destination in preferences. I still had a bunch of songs now marked unable to locate. Then, when I find the original and import, it doesn't import all of the track information. I end up just having to re-import the original source cd. AArrrgghhh!!!

Restoring Data after Hard Drive Replacement

My hard drive just passed away (luckily 2 weeks before my applecare ran out) and am unsure the best way to restore my data. I made a carbon copy clone of my hard drive before I took it in and thought I could just boot from that and copy over my data but I can't seem to select the drive as a bootable option (its a western digital 120g firewire and usb drive. Do i need to go through the initial os x set up before I can do this. Also I am debating using this as an chance to do some house keeping. If I decide not to reclone my hard drive can I just copy over old apps like word or do I need to reinstall them. And if my user name and nickname are the same as before will it cause any problems if I decide later to restore my hard drive from the clone copy?

1. First, you must format and zero out the new HDD. This spares out bad blocks, and preparest your HDD for installation.
2. Then I suggest doing a fresh install of the system software.
3. You can then restore your Users Folder.
4. And, finally, some applications can be copied by drag and drop. I think Word is one of those.
1. Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
Select Erase tab
Select the a volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
Click OK.
Click Erase button
Quit Disk Utility.
2. Install System Software
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11.
Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Connect to Internet.
Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
Install all updates.
Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
Click Repair Disk Permissions.
3. Copying Over an Account to a different Volume
Copying an Account directly by dragging or by cloning will not change the NetInfo information needed for the Account to be properly recognized.
To properly set up NetInfo
*Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts
*Click on padlock and authenticate
*Click on plus sign under Login Options to add a new account.
*Set up an account and check box to allow user to administer.
*Log out of current account and log in to new Admin account
*Connect computer (Host) to computer with account to be transferred.
*If you are able boot into Firewire you can do that and use SuperDuper to clone only the Users Folder, or FW or USB go to next step
* Drag Home folder from backup drive to Users Folder on new drive and rename it. (If you get an error message about permissions when doing the copy, click button to Authenticate and enter your password; alternatively, you can turn permissions off for the source disk in the Get Info window.)
*Switch names between copied Folder and Home Folder (with house icon) by putting 2 after Home Folder name, and naming newly copied Folder with account name (original home folder name).
*To see that copied folder is owned by the account that is logged in select folder and Get Info (Command + i), then go to Ownership & Permissions.
*Log out of account by going to the Apple Menu and selecting Log out Account Name (Command + Shift + Q)
*Log back in to account.
*If the account was successfully copied, you may uncheck Allow User to Administer option in Apple Menu/System Preferences/Accounts if you so choose.

No chance without special tools/knowledge. There are companies that can do it, unless you use multiple format or rewrite data with special erase ustility or unless you have done low level format.

How to backup data when hard drive is failing.

I think my hard drive is failing..
I booted using Install DVD, and got message in Disc Utility that "this drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired." It mentioned I should backup data and consult apple representative..
I clicked on Macintosh HD under the red physical drive (500.11 GB Hitachi HTS) and did disc repair.
Strangely, the message went away on the physical drive when I finished. It turned back to black wording and gave green "verified/repaired" messages in the log.
I am still able to boot my macbook, although everything is running slowly... Desktop excel files take 15 mins to open.
Does this still sound like a failing hard drive?
I am trying to act fast and borrowed my sister's external harddrive/ "passport for mac", and it slowly prompted a time machine backup. It is slowly working through "8.34GB of 200.33GB"
I do not really understand what I am doing, but hoping this is the right move. Could someone explain what time machine will do or how it will help?
Is there any chance I will harm her external hd?
I am mostly worried about iPhoto and itunes library, iMovie projects,and important excel spreadsheets on my desktop. Is time machine looking after these concerns?

Now you will need to use very expensive data recovery experts to recover data when you could have had it safely on a $100 worth of 2 external HD.
Mechanical HD failure circumvents using recovery software.......so, now you backed yourself into a corner and needed expensive data expert recovery.
You took a wrong turn a long while back before reaching this cliff edge.
that wrong term was not having (preferably 2) external HD as a redundant data archive.

How to get data from hard drive in dead iMac?

I have an old slot-loading iMac (350Mhz G3 blueberry) that just died, probably a dead power supply or something. Won't turn on at all. I don't care about restoring it, I just want to take the hard drive out and grab data from it. I've found instructions for removing the HD ... but any tips on the best/cheapest way to hook it up to get data from it? It's EIDE I believe from what I've read so far. Thanks for any help.

Hey Richard.....Thanks for the reply to my question about my wife's dead iMac.....
Her iMac had been acting up lately, mostly to do with her Outlook Express freezing up in OS9. I dunno if OS9 was freezing or if the application was failing. Regardless, I would have to quit OS9, restart Outlook which at the same time restarted OS9. All would be fine for a while, a day or two and then the scene would repeat itself. But I think that issue is separate from the iMac being "dead". Often we have power outages in the area, more than we should. I had the iMac plugged into a battery backup, some APS product I think it is. I believe it is only good for less than an hour as we have other devices drawing on it too. Most of our power outages are of short duration, just enough to be aggravating, sometimes having to reset clocks, etc...And a couple times, I would have to reset the time and date on the iMac so this told me that the PRAM battery was below minimum voltage. But the iMac would ALWAYS restart, even with the low battery. But the most recent outage, about one hour duration, did in the iMac, somehow or other. I do believe the battery backup basically fully discharged. So I removed the battery, could not find a new battery locally so I drove to the big city and paid the local Apple service dealer a visit. I got ripped big time price wise, embarrassed to say. So I get home, put the battery in the holder, depressed the CMU reset, the powerbutton illuminated as did a green LED by the memory modules for less than three seconds and then quit. I also heard the HD trying to spin up and a high voltage THUMP which I assume is the CRT trying to ignite. If I unplugged the iMac, removed the battery, plug in the power again and hit the power button, the iMac would repeat the same short on period and then quit. So it did not seem to make any difference if there was a battery in place. I read somewhere to pull the battery, pull the AC cord, hold down the power button to dump any current (?) and let the unit sit for 24hrs. After that length of time, I was supposed to replace the battery, depress the CMU reset, wait ten seconds and then feed it AC. Well, when I pressed the power button, I heard life for maybe five seconds, maybe a second longer, then a beep and then it shut down. I pulled the AC cord, pulled the battery, re-inserted the battery, depressed the CMU reset, waited a few seconds, plugged in the AC cord, depressed the power button and I am back at the under three seconds of "power-up" and then nothing, dead, no beep, nothing. I think maybe it is a waste of time trying to mess with this unit, looking for a newer iMac on eBay, the snowball series with the 17" LCD, might be time better spent. Hate throwing stuff away, that's why I am up to my ears in junk, maybe u know that scenario. The wife likes my 19" ACER LCD screen, hooked up to this old dual 800mhz, though she dislikes the noise and the tower. But we both agree the large LCD screen is much easier on our aging eyes than the old iMac CRT. Anyway, I appreciate your help, always GREAT to correspond with an Apple fan.....John Bauer

Problems reading my backed up data on hard drive after using Time Machine

I have a MacBookPro and had to take it in for servicing. I backed up all my data using Time machine. They had to replace my battery, hard drive, and logic board, basically wiping my slate clean. When I got my computer back and plugged in my hard drive time machine came up asking if I wanted to restore a back up. I chose the drive. Then that drive disappeared from the desktop and changed the disk name from "BACKUP" to "disk1s4" and is unreadable. Cannot get anything off the hard drive.
Any idea how I can read my data off my hard drive. I have 3+ years of pictures of my 2 kids and all my music. The rest I could take or leave. But I would be devastated to lose my pictures.

Back up Data on Hard drive

I have been experiencing problems with my T61 and recently the computer shut down and can't boot all the way. Lenovo is sending me a New T61 in a couple of weeks, so I was wondering if there is a way to back up, transfer, or restore the data on the old hard drive. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Go into Rescue and Recovery by pressing the Thinkvantage button during start up, within the Rescue Recovery system you have the option to backup your current system and then save it into an external usb harddrive i think.

Can't restore my data from hard drive with time machine

So basically I recently backed up my things on an external 1TB Seagate hard drive via Time Machine on my Mac. I then restored my Mac to its factory settings. However when I plugged in my hard drive it didn't show up in my finder. I opened Disk Utility and it shows up there but when I tried to restore my data it wasn't able to find it. This is so weird and I'm so scared can someone please help me

Sounds like the TimeMachine drive is defective.
Uplug it and reboot and see if your problems go away.
If your TimeMachine is broken it might be possible to do data recovery on it, you can take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they will image it so the files are accessible, then you can pick through the mess as long as it wasn't encrypted or Filevaulted.
TimeMachine uses a lot of placeholder files, basically the same name but minus the content of the files for each saved state.
It's a lot of work going through all the folders to find your original files but as long as the drive works the files should be able to be recovered.
Sorry about your problems, TimeMachine hasn't quite lived up to it's expectations and I try to warn everyone NOT to completely trust it.

Try using one of those listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

Something like this would work. Pull out your hard drive and put it in the enclosure. Hook it up to a working computer and you should be able to see all your folders and files.

Is it possible to back up data if hard drive is crashing or has crashed

My son's computer froze and I have tried to reboot while holding down the option key and by holding down Command + Option + R for an internet reboot.
When I try to repair utilities from the internet, I cannot choose the hard drive; instead, my options are SuperDrive, disk) and MacOS X Base System.
When I click on any of those options and select First Aid, I cannot click on Repair Disk Permissions. It's as if the hard drive has vanished!
If I try to re-install Mac OS X, will I lose all data?
I have an appointment with the Genius Bar tomorrow, but I have no way that I know of to back up the data.
Ideas? My son does not use iCloud and has never back up anything

First, don't attempt to reinstall OS X. Even if it does allow you to do so, it will overwrite existing drive space and may put your files further out of reach.
There are disk utilities you can use to try to recover the drive (e.g. Diskwarrior), or get the files back (e.g. Data Rescue) - they generally require having another Mac connected to your son's, and space to recover files to. They're not recommended if you're unfamiliar with their use, as it's very possible to make things worse.
I would be inclined to leave the computer alone until you meet with Apple, tell them exactly what the situation is, and they may be able to connect to the files. If they cannot, you should take the computer (before Apple does any work on it) to a reliable local Mac specialist who could try to recover the data for you. If it is absolutely vital that you get the files back, you may end up having to send the drive to a data recovery specialist such as DriveSavers (which can be quite expensive).

How to move from a "recovered data external hard drive" to the new Computer?

Computer 1's hard drive crash and all programs and data were recovered professionally and sent to me on an External Hard Drive. Computer 1 was on Windows 7. I can fun the program off of the External Hard drive fine, when connected to my my new Computer. I click on the .exe file and it pulls up the catalogue as it should. All off of the recovery drive.
The new Computer, is on Windows 8.1. How do I get the Adobe Catalogues moved/copied to the new Computer?
I redownload Adobe 10 onto my new 8.1 Computer from the Adobe website. Using the new download, I was able to open the Catalogue on the External Drive (F). Cannot find a way to "relocate" the Catalogue to the new computer. The pictures have already been copied to the new computer.
Please help!!!!! Desperate not to lose the organization (tagging/dating) etc in 30,000 pictures+.

Before we can give a solution, we need more information and we must be clear about the details of the recovery.
From your post, I assume that the external drive contains a copy of your picture files, with probably exactly the same folder path. I think that that path is identical in Win7 and Win8 (it was not in XP).
You have reinstalled Photoshop Elements 10 in your new computer.
So the main point is : what about your old catalogs ? It's quite possible that the professional recovery has also made a copy of those.
You'll have to search the external drive for one or several folders containing a 'catalog.pse10db' file.
If you find one or several, select the newest in date (or the biggest), the folder containing it is the catalog you are looking for.
If you don't find one, be sure that the explorer is set to show hidden files. Without catalogs, you can't restore your organization
Now, when you have found the catalog (the folder), you can do this test. With PSE and Organizer closed, double click on the 'catalog.pse10db' file. That should open the organizer with the catalog. Since the files are not in the same location as before, all links in the catalog will be wrong : different drive identification and perhaps different folder structure. That test should show you the thumbnails (the catalog cache in the folder should have been recovered; if not it's not that important, the thumbnails cache will be recreated automatically).
Now, how to 'reconnect' all files, that depends on what you want to do: keep them in the external drive or copy them back to the main internal drive. The problem will be either to update the catalog database to point to the new location or to recreate the same drive identification as before : letter and drive serial number, exactly same folder tree. We can discuss those options when you have made the first test.
If that goes well, don't worry about the location of the catalog : you can move it either from the catalog manager or manually.

Mail stores the messages in .emlx files, but you cannot import individual messages directly, only entire mailboxes. In order to import the recovered .emlx files back into Mail, they must be organized as if they were in an .mbox mailbox, i.e. they must be in a Messages folder within an .mbox folder. You may create a folder called Recovered.mbox, then a Messages folder within this folder, then put the .emlx files within the Messages folder, then import that.
In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions. Note that Mail wants you to select the folder that contains the mailboxes to be imported (i.e. the folder where the .mbox folders to be imported reside), not the .mbox folders themselves nor the Messages folders within them.
Given the circumstances, however, there could be something wrong with one or more of the recovered messages and that might cause the import to fail. If that’s the case, you may try organizing the recovered messages in several smaller mailboxes and try to identify the messages that Mail has trouble with. Alternatively, you may try using emlx to mbox Converter or Emailchemy to convert the .emlx files to standard mbox format, then import that in Mail as Other.
