Unexplained High Data Usage

Hi, I am on day 1 of my monthly plan and at 10am this morning I received a text saying I had used 50% of my data. I then received another text at 11:30 am saying I had used 85%. I am connected to Wi-Fi both at home and at work and was at work between 10 - 11:30 am today. My average usage is less than 50% a month, I also havn't I been using my phone much this morning. Is there a glitch in the system somewhere? thanks

Hello Meg,There are a multitiude of settings in Apple phones that can be disabled to reduce data usage.The very next thing I would do is turn off Mobile Data until you resolve the issue.If you disable background data,  go through your usage and you will see where your data is being used.Make sure you are logged out of Facebook.I would ring Apple support on 1300 321 456 and they can walk you through an absolute multitude of settings that can reduce data. When you ring them, you get Level 1 support in Queensland who only provide very basic support.  Please  ask/insist on being switched through to a Level 2 technician, as these folk really know their stuff. Thanks

    To reduce data usage, you should put iPad on Aeroplane Mode to stop all background activities when not using iPad.

  • High data usage with Exchange email

    We have encountered the following problem when using Exchange email.
    Device used: iPhone 5
    Exchange Server 2007 SP3
    The exchange mailserver is limiting the size of an email to for example 10 MB
    Now the users send an email with multiple high resolution pictures via email exceeding this 10 MB
    The email stays in the outbox and retries over and over and over to send the email.
    When connected to cellular network the data usage is increasing rapidly and the result is a very large bill.
    What can be done to prevent the email from sending over and over again?
    The user does not notice any problem as the email stays in the outbox.
    Your thoughts are highly appreciated.

    Currently on the phone with Apple. I do believe this is a technical issue.
    The user sends out an email and it is not very clear to the user that there are problems sending the email.
    I have seen instances were users used up to 3GB of cellurlar data usage because they send just on email that was too large.
    Will post if I learn anything from Apple.
    Did you know that there is some mechanism on the phone for to prevent sending to much content? Try to select like 20-30 pictures and use the arrow icon to assign the pictures to an application. You will notice that there is not much to select from. Now try to reduce the amount of pictures. More option will become available as you reduce the amount of pictures.
    Unfortunately, if you attach anything from the mail app there does not seem to be a check on how much data you send.

  • Unexplained Verizon Data Usage on Iphone 5s

    I have data usage charges showing up on my Iphone 5s every day at 5:40am Eastern time.  The problem is that my phone is not being used at that time of day and is always connected to WiFi while I am home.  The data usage has been very large, from 60mb all the way up to 100mb.  I see that others have posted similar concerns so I'm throwing my voice in here saying that this is not our imagination, it is happening and killing out data usage.
    Here is a screen grab of my data usage.  As you can see, every day at 5:40am, there is a large spike in usage.  My phone is not in use at that time:
    There must be an explanation and resolution for this.

        Hi KingPumpkin,
    We always want your charges to be accurate! Smartphones are now able to tell you what applications are using your data. Please go to cellular>use cellualr data for>and this list tells you what data was billed to your cellular data. You could screen shot this list when your done using the phone in the evening. Then compare the screenshot in the morning to see what application data has changed. Data overages can sometime be billed in delay. Your device is set to pick up the strongest signal on the device, so if the Wi-fi server is weak or reboots at 5:40am every morning, then the device will quickly switch to back the Verizon Wireless network until the Wi-fi server comes back up. You could also eliminate these charges by turning off the cellular data every night since the device is connected to Wi-fi.
    Thanks,

  • New phone shows high data usage in My Verizon right after purchase - why?

    I purchased a new Galaxy S5 yesterday.  We looked at "My Verizon" and saw data usage of 470 MB on the summary, but the phone showed 14 MB.  I downloaded the data usage details, and they also showed 14 MB.  Today her summary shows 1556 MB, but the detailed data spreadsheet cells add up to 162.49 MB.  The phone is on wifi only.  What gives?  My wife has averaged around 200 MB per month for years.  Is this some kind of fraud?  We got my daughter a new IPhone and go nailed for a $10 data overage within a 24 hours.  There were two half-gig downloads, but there is no way to trace what they were, whether some kind of Apple-induced downloads or what.  Verizon customer service gave us an extra gig since the store failed to tell us that the data usage was pro-rated.  They also failed to tell my wife to set the phone to wifi only until all of the phone's little data-sucking default applications did their updates.  I was totally off contract with 5 phones, and just put 4 new little data-sucking piggy phones back on contract for two years for my family.  My own phone number 5 will not be with Verizon.  Unless they change their loan-shark practices on data charges, this will be my last contract with Verizon.  Their customer support folks are great, but I have a low tolerance for a billing system that cannot be audited for accuracy in data charges.

    Regarding your second comment, you are dead-on correct.  My daughter's last plan was Virgin with unlimited data and 200 minutes of talk.  We failed to sit down together and go over the differences.  While I was ultimately responsible for explaining the need to turn off cellular coverage at home, I still feel the need to let my Verizon sales rep know to stress this to customers like us who have lived for years with unlimited data plans.
    I am taking your advice and pulling the trigger on Republic tomorrow.  They have a referral plan that will give both me and my son $19 after the first payment period ends.  I appreciate your feedback!

  • Unusual High Data Usage

    During the last billing cycle I have been keeping close watch over my data usage when I noticed a 32.99 MB data usage appear. Today I go back to check my account because I see that my data usage has increased by a substantial amount again. I look back through my data usage and now see all of the data from before has 'magically' changed. The 32.99 MB usage has vanished and all new numbers have appeared. Along with one usage that is marked as 402.41 MB! This is an absurd amount of usage! Can someone explain what is going on with my data usage?
    Just to cover some bases: I turn off my Mobile Data when I'm not using it. I use my wireless internet for most of my activity. I do not watch movies or play data dependent games on my phone. I check facebook periodically throughout the day, but almost always while I'm connected to the Wi-Fi.
    My biggest concern is that the data usage on my 'My Verizon' page is changing. Not changing with new entries, but changing PREVIOUS entries that I've already viewed and talked to customer support about. My data is building up quickly and it's only the fourth day into my billing cycle. I'm already very concerned. I don't want to have to pay extra by the time the month is up.

        We want you to have the best data plan to meet your needs meakerism! What plan do you have currently? What make and model device? How many users on your account? Fluctuation in data usage can occur often. Please be assured we bill accurately. My Verizon usage estimates can delay up to 48 hours. Have you brought these concerns to our attention previously?

  • Unexplained heavy data usage - Microsoft owns up

    For the many who are seeing odd and unexplained data traffic - Microsoft are now admitting a problem caused by an unnamed third party app. See - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12152517
    I guess it won't be long before someone discovers which app is actually doing it - or indeed, if it is just one. It goes without saying that this may actually be the tip of an iceberg, and may not be restricted to Windows Phone 7 only.

    I wonder how many members if this forum who have been 'victims' over the last few years are actually using Windows 7?

  • Remote Time Machine backup over VPN, high data usage?

    I have a remote Mac mini Server running 10.10.1 in a hosted environment. I'm attempting to perform a Time Machine backup from a MacBook Pro, also running Yosemite, over VPN.
    While TM does see the AFP share over VPN and is backing up, it's been working at it for almost 36 hours now. I understand than uploading a lot of data takes time, but I noticed that Activity Monitor shows that over 30GB of data has been uploaded while the TM progress bar states that only 6.35GB (of ~20GB) has been transferred. Why such a difference? I know that VPN will introduce some overhead, but this just seems ridiculous.
    Does anyone have any insight into what is happening? Better yet, can anything be done to fix it?
    I actually purchased the mini server for the primary purpose of having remote TM backups, but this type of data rate and transfer is almost making it look impractical.

    Time Machine is a very network intensive process, it has to check to see what files have changed this requires comparing between any existing backups and the Mac itself, it may have to prune existing backups to make more room this requires various commands, it of course has to copy new or altered files, it also has to verify all of this. On top of all this as you said the VPN system itself has an overhead and TCP/IP itself does so as well.
    While >30GB vs 6.35GB does seem an excessive ratio it is not impossible. It should be noted even a local first backup (the biggest) can take a great deal of time, however typically subsequent backups are a lot smaller and hence quicker.
    If you were able to do a local backup and do the same measurements of amounts transferred this would at least show if the amount is normal.

  • Why is the Iphone3G high data usage so high ?

    I have owned a blackberry for years and just made the switch. When traveling overseas, I receive and send emails and over a normal week period I only use about 700K when using a blackberry (as I do not open attachments until I get WIFI). HOWEVER with the iphone3g to send 4 simple emails and receive 8 emails in the morning I am up to 2.5MEG !!!! How is this possible when looking at my email account on exchange, the total data is only 100K ???? I have not used any other application which requires logging on to the net / gps etc. I am NOT happy as it means I have to turn on and off my phone roaming for 5 mins to check email which is a BIG pain (because from reading the discussions that the phone automatically checks for updates which appears to SERIOUSLY eat up data). Am I doing something wrong or has Apple seriously messed up ????

    Unlike the Blackberry line all Smartphones that run Windows Mobile or in this case OS X on the iPhone use full HTML graphics for email and browsing. The Blackberry line restricts what the user actually is seeing by limiting the graphics to a lower version resembling almost a WAP like experience when browsing as is seen on regular cellphones. Both AT&T (USA) and O2 (UK) offer unlimited data plans for iPhone 3G users and even Rogers (Canada) offers a 6 GB data plan at a reasonable add on price of $30.00. The only concern would be for those that don't have a data plan or for those that have less than 400 MB.

  • High data usage on my Mac due to the cloud or internet browsing in general

    With my iPhone and Windows computer we used less than two gigs a month for five years. Now I'm using up to 20-25 gigs a month with an iMac. No one seems to be able to tell me why I have this massive data increase and it's costing me a lot of money. Not happy. Help.

    Hi mtmackintosh,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  You may be able to use Activity Monitor's Network Activity feature to help determine what is using the data:

  • Why is my data usage so high?

    Using Verizon's data calculator, 5G should me more than sufficient for the limited PC usage.  In one week, the data usage information indicates we have used over half in one week.  There are several entries in the breakdown for small amounts during the midnight hours, when computers are not in use and shut down.
    I am very disappointed with the information provided before this plan was purchased, based on what we expected for our data needs.  By increasing the data amount our bill will increase 30.00  There are many sources that indicate 2G should be ample for each of us in the household (2).  So, I am not sure the calculations are correct that are being tracked with the Jetpack system.  Here is the data calculator, I entered more than twice the expected usage for the two laptops combined.  We download no music, videos, movies.  Simply check email and browse the web.  How do you explain this?

    5/21/2014 Data Calculator - Verizon Wireless

    The VZW Data Calculator is a tool designed to help estimate and visualize data usage.  Most folks have no idea what data is or how it is consumed on their devices.  The data calculator tool is not accurate on any front other than to give you a general idea how much data a particular function consumes under normal circumstances.
    VZW provides its users with a limited data usage report that does not break down individual application or device usage into meaningful results.  What you get instead is a power bill like summary of your usage in terms of how much was used at certain times of the day.  After all VZW is not in the computer support business, they provide you with the pipe and users determine how best to consume the data.  A leaky hose or application is not the responsibility of VZW to discover and correct.
    When it comes to the actual usage of your VZW device there isn't a whole lot out there that can show you how you are consuming your data plan.  Some monitor applications and devices can be setup ahead of time, but all they are good for is reviewing the data that flows through them.  Special care must be taken when designing and setting up monitors to make sure you capture everything.  Monitors are generally not user friendly to setup or understand and often require detailed readings of numerous logs to determine where problems are, if the monitor can even capture them at all.
    The current best practices for data usage are as follows:
    1. Power down your VZW device when it is not being used
    2. Secure your VZW device with a custom SSID, WiFi and Admin password
    - This should be in compliance with security best practices for strong passwords
    - A good site to reference is https://howsecureismypassword.net/
    3. Take care to disable and shutdown any automatic updates on your devices
    4. Be cautious to view and download audio/video content on low resolution
    In most cases high data usage is not an intentional doing on the users behalf.  It is the background applications and services installed on the connected devices that run rampant and chew up your data plan without your knowledge or consent.

  • OS X Mail - excess data usage

    I have been struggling with extreme data usage - approaching the 300GB/mo Comcast allotment.  I do not stream HD content or play multi-player games, etc, the normal drivers of high data usage.  Other investigation of Wi-Fi looking for pirates, etc show no unexpected devices using my modem/router.  I closed the router firewall to bittorrent, kazaa, etc.  I finally noticed in the Network tab of the Activity Monitor that Mail was the highest consumer of inbound data, to the tune of 250 KB/sec, which can pile up a GB pretty fast!  Restarting Mail clears the problem.  I finally was watching the monitor while moving through mail messages and when I hit an HTML message with several images, there was a long pause trying to display the message content and eventually just broken images displayed - and usage went to the ~250 KB/sec level!  Going to another message and returning to the "trigger" message showed the images fine, so they HAD been downloaded/cached, but perhaps Mail doesn't know it and is in a retry loop?  Usage stays at this level until Mail is restarted, then all is well, even when going back to the trigger message (as expected due to caching).
    This is occurring on an iMac running Yosemite, but I have NOT observed the same behavior (yet?) on MacBook running Yosemite with same Mail config.  My usage has been high for several months, but I had not investigated until recently.  I had been using Postbox as my mail agent since Mavericks due to the IMAP issues with Gmail.  Since Yosemite seems to have solved that I switched back to Mac Mail.  A Comcast level 2 agent said he had heard of some data-loop issue with Mailplane - another Gmail client app for OS X.  Since I do not/had not used Mailplane, I discounted that cause, but it eventually made me wonder and now this issue has surfaced.  Current Mail config has 1 iCloud, 1 Exchange, 3 IMAP Gmail and 1 IMAP Comcast accounts defined.  The trigger message was in a Gmail account, so is that the common denominator??
    Is anyone else seeing this behavior?  Any ideas for a solution?

    The iOS view vs classic view in Mail is not the problem; I've already configured for classic view.
    Mountain Lion itself is.
    My short list (to date) of crappy Mountain Lion behavior; items marked with a double asterisk (**)represent the worst of Mountain Lion for me.
    ** No up/down arrows in scroll bar slider;
    Expose` not as easy to navigate as in Snow Leopard;
    Mail does not request passwords for either receive or send;
    No "Save Draft" icon in Mail compose window (workaround: use command-s);
    "Save As" selection missing in most app menus;
    No separate Search window in Safari (workaround: use Firefox or Opera);
    ** Can't export Mail from Mountain Lion into Snow Leopard if downgrading (I compiled this list before I stumbled on the method in this thread, but I'd prefer to effect this with Unix symbolic links);
    iWork 09 seems to have "circled the wagons" re compatibility with MS Office or LibreOffice (workaround: just use Libreoffice);

  • Crazy data usage suddenly on Mifi! 10gb in one day?

    I noticed earlier this month that I got a notification for my data usage only about 10 days into my plan and thought it was unusual, but as my son had been streaming a music video I increased my plan, downloaded said video and disconnected his computer from wifi.  Then, 3 days ago I get another notification and tell my son to no longer play games on his iphone and increase my plan yet again.  Today, I get another notification (son at school and wifi on his phone and computer are off) and I increase, yet again to 40GB!!!  I then go around and see what is connected to wifi, our ipad (which was only on a kindle book, not a game or surfing internet, nothing unusual), our Hopper from Dish (which I then disconnected, we do not stream as 4g is too slow and we don't want to use up our data) and turn off the wifi on 2 other iphones (that were running nothing in the background, but did it just in case).  I then almost immediately get an alert that I am at 77% of my new data plan (30.8 gb now) and I begin working on an excel spreadsheet with nothing running on my computer.  A couple of hours later I am at 90% of my data and now, as I write this message, I have gotten 2 more alerts saying that I am now over my 40 gb, so that would be at least 10gb of data used just in the last 6 hours!  A few hours ago I chatted with a Verizon chat and she said that it could be my phones, ipads, hoppers, basically anything but they cannot tell what,  I disconnected everything except this computer and restarted the mifi.  Something is clearly wrong.  They want me to turn it off every night for the next week before they will open a problem ticket but at this rate my bill is going to be absolutely insane!  I haven't changed any of my habits from the last year, other than what I mentioned earlier this month so I am completely baffled.  Help!
    See my log:

    I have had VERY high data usage. 3GB in a few hours time. Verizon help line could not figure it out. I had a Verizon Jetpack 890L. I up graded to a newer model Verizon Jetpack MiFi 6620L in the middle of November. Data usage when even HIGHER! I noticed HIGH data usage in August of 2014. The HIGH data continued in September, October, and November of 2014. The newer Jetpack MiFi 6620L used even MORE data!
    Verizon tech support was not much help. They wanted to know if I had changed the Jetpack password and they thought that someone was using my Jetpack WiFi. The problem is I live in a VERY rural area. My nearest neighbor is MORE than a mile away. My wireless network connection does not show ANY OTHER users! I still changed my password on the Jetpack. I normally change my passwords on a monthly basis. These changes made NO DIFFERENCE in my HIGH data usage. They also asked what was connected to my Jetpack. I have a phone by another provider. I DO NOT use the phone with the Blue Tooth or WiFi on my Jetpack . It's NOT needed for a clear phone signal. I only have my laptop (HP Pavilion) connected to the Jetpack. I have connected my printer by cable and don't even use the wireless printing functions. STILL NO CHANGE IN DATA USAGE!
    The Verizon tech also suggested that I have an Internet Security and Antivirus software. I have used Norton Internet Security and Antivirus software for a decade or more without any problems. The tech suggested that maybe that was the problem. NOT! He felt that the Cloud setting maybe using all this data. I use Norton 360 with the Norton Zone Cloud. I DID NOT receive ANY FIXS from Verizon!
    I also called Norton who provides my Internet Security and Antivirus software. I had been running these packages on an on going basis. I had not shown ANY threats or problems in the past year or more. I had the tech go over my settings to make sure that they were not the problem of HIGH Data Usage. My Norton Zone or Cloud settings were average without any high drain. He asked that I go back to Verizon!
    I finally have found that I may have had Malware that was in my software. I used Malwarebytes. It works well wth my Norton 360. It has slowed my high data usage BUT NOT ELIMANATED the problem. Malwarebytes is a free service. You can also download it for free. You can purchase advance or premium packages on the internet and at some stores if you want a hard copy. It's always worth a try!
    At this point I have run out of options!

  • Cellular data usage spiking while using WIFI

    Over the last couple of months, we have noticed a HUGE spike in our Cellular Data usage.  We have had an iPhone 5 for a little over a year and have always been under our 2GB limit.  However, during October our "usage" spiked to almost 4GB resulting in additional charges.  In November, we saw our "usage" spike to almost 5GB.  We do not stream music nor videos and have gone as far as to turn off data for apps and images on emails.  Additionally, we use WIFI at home with multiple access points to ensure complete coverage.  This is maddening and extremely frustrating knowing we have not drastically changed our usage and have most likely decreased our usage based on our awareness of the issue.  Verizon's solutions are to increase our plan, turn off cellular data while on WIFI, and wipe the phone.  All of which are not acceptable.  The suggestion that 4G results in higher data usage than 3G is just ridiculous.  I will be watching our usage this month very closely and refuse to pay any overages.  If it continues to climb, I will make my voice heard the only other way I know how by walking to another carrier.  I have been a Verizon supporter and customer for almost 10 years however, this is unacceptable.

    My findings on the matter are summarized here...

  • Unusally High Data Charges and Unwillingness to help

    Hi, I am wanting to find out if anyone has had unusually high data usage on their Home DSL ? I have been dealing with Verizon on a problem since August and have received exactly no help on this problem. I received a bill for over $600 and they say I've used over 75G of data in a month. Also since I have refused to pay the bill and they have suspended service, I have used over 65G of data since they have suspended service. Someone please tell me how this is possible. I have a business line through my employer and have talked to the business center on this matter and nothing has been done except for my bill to keep going up even after they have suspended service. Help Please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I'm not sure if someone who doesn't know the difference between DSL( stands for digital subscriber line ) and wireless can say with any authority they didn't use the amount of data in question.
    Using 75 GB in a month is nothing. Especially if you connecting a PC to your connection. 75 GB would be a light month for us.
    Anyways what devices do you connect with your connection?
