Unexplained system beep at logout/restart/shutdown

For some time now, whenever I logout, restart, or shutdown my iMac, the system beep would sound. Is this normal? Why does it do this? Other than that, everything seems fine.

Mine does this too, not sure why.. Also, how to post discussions?

  • Logout, restart, shutdown all get stuck

After Quicksilver G4 has been idle for a few hours and I come along to shut it down or log out, it starts the process but gets stuck at the blue screen and spinning doohickey. (not the beachball). I've let it sit for over a half hour.
I can SSH into it and there are no stuck processes, no CPU overload, no memory overruns. It's just sitting there drooling.
The only other symptom is that the eject key doesn't function sometimes. If it is one of those times, I can be sure it will hang on reboot. Other times the eject key works fine regardless of whether there is a disc in there or not.
    Happened with 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2, but never with 10.4.x
    Strange huh?

Open Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app), and see if you can spot any thing to do with Safari or Firefox in there.

  • Can not logout, restart or shutdown

I have a Mac running 10.5.8. I have seen this on different models as well.
The user can not logout, restart or shutdown. When those commands are selected in the GUI nothing happens.
In the past the only way I could fix it was to create a new profile. There must be an easier way. does anyone know which files I should delete instead of having to create a new profile?

I'd launch the Console utility and look for messages that might explain the cause of the problem. You might find that it's due to a process that refuses to quit.

How can I disable the system feature which automatically restarts applications i had open during a previous session ?

When you log out, uncheck the box to reopen applications. If you're still using 10.7.3, then you will have to uncheck the back with each shutdown or restart.
10.7.4 update was suppose to fix it that when you uncheck the box, it should remain unchecked for restarts after that.

  • System beeps at startup

Starting today, my system beeps when I start up.  When I power on, I hear approximately 3-4 faint beeps.  It stops after that.  It sounds like it's a system warning beep from the K8N.  The beeping stops after those first 3 or 4 beeps and the system boots up fine.  I'm confused and have no idea what this beep signifies.

    AMI Beep Code
    Beep Code         Description
    1 short         DRAMS refresh failure
    2 short         Parity circuit failure
3 short         Base 64k RAM failure
    4 short         System timer failure
    5 short         Process failure
6 short         Keyboard controller Gate A20 error

8 short         Display memory Read/Write test failure
9 short         ROM BIOS checksum failure
10 short         CMOS shutdown Read/Write error
    11 short         Cache Memory error
    1 long, 3 short         Conventional/Extended memory failure
    1 long, 8 short         Display/Retrace test failed
I have 3 short beeps.  What the heck is Base 64k RAM failure?? I'm going to email MSI for tech support here, but as we know, they don't have a perfect record in answering tech emails.  So, in the meantime, I'd really appreciate everyones' help.
    Thank you.

  • Black borders and duplicate restart/shutdown options

I just started up my computer this morning and now black boxes appear around icons when I mouse over them and borders appear around lines of text - really annoying and distracting. Also, When I go to shutdown or restart, I notice that there are multiple restart, shutdown and log out options. Any ideas what I did and how to fix it?

    hi there-
try going to system preferences > universal access. is voice over enabled?? if so, disable it, and it should get rid of your black boxes and duplicate options. [ 8 ) ]

  • URGENT Help request! After Onyx, iMac stuck in midst of logout/restart

Our iMac has been stuck for *more than an hour* in the middle of the logout/restart process. I had just ran Onyx on our iMac in preparation for upgrading it from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I'd just clicked the "restart" button which Onyx displays after completing its work. The screen is displaying the desktop image but nothing of the finder or desktop icons. The screen is also displaying the tiny rotating progress symbol that you normally see during startup. I worry that if I force an interruption it will hose the system.
    Any advice?

No advice for getting out of it, perhaps someone else will have that.
I will mention that I don't use "maintenance" programs. I tried out a couple, I think around 10.2 or so, and dropped them, particularly as I read more support articles about how they don't really do much or that they could cause slowdowns or problems. I trust my Mac to take care of it self, and the OS is continuously improving in self-maintenance, which has been contrary to MS Windows. Though I haven't kept up with Vista or number 7 to know if they finally have relieved their users of defragging and such.
So, in the future, on your Macs at least, I'd say ditch the those so-called maintenance programs. Trusting third-party apps to mess with your systems internals is really dicey anyways. I've been doing great without them. Also, to convince yourself, read up on the support documents on Apple's website to learn more about caches or defragging or anything else those maintenance apps claim to help out with. Also note on those articles what OS it is about, just to be sure it's up to date.
Of course, if you've already done that and weren't convinced, perhaps this incident helps?
If you have backups of you personal content, everything will be fine again. Hope someone can help out with what you got going on in the mean time.

  • ERROR MESSAGE sap system manager:work process restarted, session terminated

    Hi,
i am a beginer in SAP administration, users are getting this error message and i have done all my research and not able to resolve this issue. Here are the details
    SAP Version :ideas 4.7
    Database :Oracle
    OS : windows 2003
Module user is working on MM
user working on it is a Super user with all the permissions
SAP is configure to run under the  European date and decimal format.
I have never done any database administration on it, it is a new install and has been rarely used.
User creates a RFQ and when he tries saving it , seems like for the first time after either restarting the macine or restarting the service it might work and at time it might not, this is a very sporadic error and most of the times it crashes out with the message "sap system manager:work process restarted, session terminated" and kicks the user out of the session.
Below are the details of the error message from ST22 :
name of the runtime error : system_core_dumped
below are the details of the error message and its resoltion as suggested by sap help :

Process terminated by signal " ".
    What happened?
The current ABAP program had to be terminated because the
ABAP processor detected an internal system error.
The current ABAP program "SAPLCLSC" had to be terminated because the ABAP
processor discovered an invalid system state.
    What can you do?
Make a note of the actions and input which caused the error.
To resolve the problem, contact your SAP system administrator.

An SAP System process was terminated by an operating system signal.

    1. Internal SAP System error.
    2. Process was terminated externally (by the system administrator).

I first thought of creatin' a batch file n' sendin' it via e-mail but it can run only after it is bein' downloaded to the local computer. Moreover in hotmail it is blocked.
Is there any existing solution for it......
    regards,

This has NOTHING to do with Java - please do not post such drivel.Correction: it is very important, but I can't post the solution here because
it would shutdown a kazillion computers all around the globe and it would
make a lot of big, fat, ugly daemons fly out of peoples' noses.

  • Sleep, Restart, Shutdown loop - how do I get out of this loop?

I installed os X Panther on mom's older iMac.
Tonight, when it's booted it comes up with "sleep, restart, shutdown" options.
We've selected each of these 3 items, waited, then either woke it up, waited for it to restart, or restarted it from shutdown; however, again it will eventually show a screen that only allows her to select "sleep, restart, shutdown"
How does she get out of this loop?
Note: There is not option to cancel the screen that has "sleep, restart, shutdown."

It shouldn't be necessary to reboot the computer to complete an update.<br />
Download a fresh copy of Firefox ([http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html]) and do a reinstall of Firefox on top of the current version.<br />
You may need to do a clean install:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • My system preference, powner off, restart disappeared after installing lion twice! Anybody can help?

After installing Lion on my Imac, the System Preference option in the apple menu (Apple sign on top left side of desktop) has disappeared. In addition, the power off, restart options are gone too. I have reinstalled the Lion twice but the problem hasn't been resolved yet. This is happening when I am logged into adm. user. In other users account, the menu seems to be ok. Any suggestions or recommendation to help me fix this issue?

Let me clarify the issue again:

All that's left are About, Location, Force Quit, Sleep, and Log Out. Can anybody help?

  • System beep every time I mouse to the lower left hand screen corner

Can anyone help me with this?
Every time I mouse to the lower left hand corner of the screen, I get a system beep.
I am using a Mac Book Pro with a 24 inch Cinema Display attached.
I do not use Expose or Spaces, I have no hot corners set.
I have no hot corners set for the screen saver.
    Any suggestions?

Sounds like the beep I get when I go to the upper right corner, for which I've set the "All windows" in expose. Try this: go to System Prefs >expose&spaces, and set your lower left corner for all windows. Then close system prefs, and throw your mouse into the lower left corner to activate expose. Then go back to system prefs and set that corner for nothing (just the dash). Now try it and see if that beep still happens.

To reseat the memory DIMM cards, remove and then reinstall them. While you have the cards out, inspect the gold connector pins along the edge of the card, and the socket into which it plugs, for debris. If you have a can of air, clean the cards and the socket.
The Hardware Maintenance Manual describes how to remove and reinstall the memory, but it is probably easier just to watch the movie!
